Russian nuclear capabilities in space could knock out US military comms, sources say

The U.S. has intelligence of a national and international security threat related to Russian nuclear capabilities in space which could threaten satellites, including potentially knocking out U.S. military communications and reconnaissance, Fox News has learned.

Sources tell Fox News that the Russian capability has not yet deployed.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner on Wednesday morning first warned of a “serious national security threat,” and called on President Biden to declassify it.

HOUSE INTEL CHAIR TURNER WARNS OF ‘SERIOUS NATIONAL SECURITY THREAT,’ URGES BIDEN TO DECLASSIFY

“The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence has made available to all Members of Congress information concerning a serious national security threat,” Turner said. “I am requesting that President Biden declassify all information relating to this threat so that Congress, the Administration, and our allies can openly discuss the actions necessary to respond to this threat.”

Fox News Digital obtained the notice sent to congressional members Wednesday, which pointed to “an urgent matter with regard to a destabilizing foreign military capability that should be known by all Congressional Policy Makers.”

Sources told Fox News that the deliberations about declassifying the intelligence relate to interests in protecting intelligence sources and methods.

A separate source told Fox News that the threat is “concerning Russian capability,” noting that the “potential seriousness of the threat is grave,” but “the threat is not immediate in nature.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., later attempted to quell any panic caused by Turner’s statement by explaining that last month, he sent a letter to the White House “requesting a meeting with the president to discuss a serious national security issue that is classified.”

“In response to that letter, a meeting is now scheduled tomorrow on this matter here at the Capitol with the Gang of Four and with the president’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan,” Johnson said. “I will press the administration to take appropriate action, and everybody can be comforted by that.”

Johnson said he “saw Chairman Turner’s statement on the issue, and I want to assure the American people there’s no need for public alarm.”

“We are going to work together to address this matter as we do all sensitive matters that are classified,” Johnson said. “And beyond that, I’m not at liberty to disclose classified information and really can’t say much of that, but we just want to assure everyone, steady hands are at the wheel, we’re working on it. There’s no need for alarm.”

BIDEN’S MEMORY STRUGGLES COULD IMPERIL NATIONAL SECURITY, DEFENSE EXPERTS WARN: ‘NOT ONLY WEAK BUT CONFUSED’

Meanwhile, Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Mark Warner, D-Va., and Vice Chairman Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said their committee “has the intelligence in question, and has been rigorously tracking this issue from the start.”

“We continue to take this matter seriously and are discussing an appropriate response with the administration,” Warner and Rubio said. “In the meantime, we must be cautious about potentially disclosing sources and methods that may be key to preserving a range of options for U.S. action.”

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan on Wednesday at the White House press briefing said that he was surprised by Turner’s statement, given that earlier in the week he reached out to members of Congress to offer himself to come to Capitol Hill to give a personal briefing on the matter.

That briefing will take place on Thursday.

“I am a bit surprised that Congressman Turner came out publicly today in advance of a meeting on the books for me to go sit with him alongside our intelligence and defense professionals tomorrow. That’s his choice to do that,” Sullivan said.

“All I can tell you is that I’m focused on going to see him, sit with him, as well as the other House members of the Gang of Eight tomorrow, and I’m not in a position to say anything further from this podium at this time, other than to make the broad point that this administration has gone further, and in more creative, more strategic ways, dealt with the declassification of intelligence in the national interest of the United States than any administration in history,” he continued.

Sullivan added: “You definitely are not going to find an unwillingness to do that when it’s in our national security interest to do so.”

He said, however, that the administration has prioritized “the issue of sources and methods.”

“Ultimately, these are decisions for the president to make, but in the meantime, the most important thing is we have the opportunity to sit in a classified setting and have the kind of conversation with the House Intelligence leadership that I, in fact, had scheduled before Congressman Turner went out today,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan again stressed that he “personally reached out” to Congress on the matter.

“It is highly unusual, in fact, for the national security adviser to do that,” he said.

Grandpa shot dead trying to apologize for fender bender in Walmart parking lot

A family is heartbroken after a California grandfather was fatally shot while trying to apologize for a fender bender.

Police say that on Feb. 5, Shawntece Norton, 37, shot 59-year-old Jonathan Mauk to death in a Walmart parking lot in Highland.

“He’s been a solid foundation for all of us. The loss is immeasurable,” the victim’s oldest son, Matthew Mauk, told local news station KABC.

The younger Mauk said his father went to Walmart to run errands when he was shot and killed.

LOS ANGELES SUSPECTED GANG MEMBERS ARRESTED AFTER KILLING 4 IN SERIES OF CALIFORNIA SHOOTINGS

“I can’t even put into words why that happened or what would go through a person’s mind to make that seem like an acceptable action. None of it makes sense,” he told the outlet.

According to the San Bernardino Police Department, Jonathan Mauk arrived at the Walmart parking lot at around 8 p.m. and was searching for an open spot. As he maneuvered his vehicle through an aisle, the female suspect, Norton, was backing out of a parking spot.

“For whatever reason, the victim stopped and slowly backed his vehicle up, and that’s when he had a collision with the suspect’s vehicle,” Capt. Nelson Carrington told KTLA.

Police said no one was hurt in the collision and that the minor fender bender resulted in just a scratch or two, KTLA reported.

But when Mauk got out of his vehicle to apologize, Norton allegedly got out of her vehicle and shot him in the face before driving off.

“From what witnesses told me, my dad felt responsible. He was the one to blame, so he got out of the car to apologize and that is when the other person shot him,” Matthew Mauk told KABC.

Norton was arrested and charged with murder the next day. She is ineligible for bail and is being held at West Valley Detention Center, according to police records.

Matthew Mauk said he retrieved his father’s vehicle the day after the shooting and that there was no real damage.

“There is a scratch on the fender. There is not a dent, there is no real damage. There is a scratch. That is the extent of the collision that he lost his life over,” he said.

Jonathan Mauk is survived by his three sons and two grandchildren. A GoFundMe page set up by Matthew Mauk to raise money for funeral expenses has raised $13,181 toward a $15,000 goal.

“He liked being called ‘grandpa.’ He said it made him feel old, but he loved the title,” the son told KABC.

He also said the family wants justice for their father’s murder.

“We’ll be there for every single court hearing. Anything that has to do with this incident, we’re going to be there. We’re going to be vocal, we’re going to talk about it,” Mauk said.

Norton is due in court on Feb. 15. She has pleaded not guilty to murder charges.

One-time GOP rival to join Trump at campaign rally amid running mate rumors

Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., is expected to join former President Donald Trump on stage in South Carolina on Wednesday night amid rumors he could be chosen as Trump’s running mate.

Scott will be on stage with Trump at the former president’s Get Out the Vote rally at the Charleston Area Convention Center in North Charleston, the Washington Examiner reported.

The rally comes just 10 days before the South Carolina GOP primary on Feb. 24.

TIM SCOTT RESPONDS TO TRUMP CONSIDERING HIM FOR VICE PRESIDENT: ‘THE ONLY THING I CAN TELL YOU IS…’

In an interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo earlier this month, Trump name-dropped Scott, as well as South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, when speaking about criteria he was looking for in a potential running mate. Trump at the time also denied reports that his campaign reached out to independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to explore a potential ticket with him early on in the campaign season, stating the interaction “never happened.”

TRUMP REVEALS CRITERIA FOR RUNNING MATE; NAME-DROPS 2 TOP REPUBLICANS

Scott, responding to Trump’s consideration, told Fox News Digital on Feb. 6 his top priority was ensuring the former president beats President Biden.

“The only thing I can tell you is that the one thing we need is four more years of President Donald Trump,” Scott said. “We were better off under Trump. In order for us to be successful, the one thing I can’t afford to do is take my eye off the ball. The eye on the ball means making sure that President Trump gets four more years.”

Scott, who suspended his own 2024 presidential campaign in November, endorsed Trump days before the New Hampshire primary.

Meanwhile, Trump’s lone remaining GOP rival, Nikki Haley, who’s coming off another loss in the Nevada primary, recently barnstormed across her home state of South Carolina, where she once served as governor. Haley is heading to Texas later this week for fundraising and campaigning in the Super Tuesday state.

Most South Carolina Republican officials at the state and federal level are backing Trump’s White House bid.

SEE IT: Climate activists dump powder on case holding US Constitution

The National Archives Rotunda was evacuated Wednesday afternoon after two climate activists dumped red powder on the encasement protecting the U.S. Constitution.

The vandalism took place just before 2:30 p.m. local time. The National Archives said the two culprits were “immediately detained” by security personnel, though footage of the incident appeared to show security guards waiting around before any arrest was made.

“The National Archives Rotunda is the sanctuary for our nation’s founding documents,” Dr. Colleen Shogan, Archivist of the United States, said in a statement. “They are here for all Americans to view and understand the principles of our nation. We take such vandalism very seriously and we will insist that the perpetrators be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

CLIMATE ACTIVISTS ARRESTED AFTER SHUTTING DOWN BIDEN CAMPAIGN HQ: ‘THAT’S BULLS—‘

Video shot by documentarian Ford Fischer shows two males smothered in red powder. The powder can be seen strewn across the protective display case holding the U.S. Constitution.

One of the individuals says they are “determined to foment a rebellion.”

The other, wearing cargo shorts, sandals, and a backward hat, says, “This country’s founded on the conditions that all men are created equally, and endowed with life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

He adds: “We’re calling for all people to have these rights, not just wealthy white men.”

Video shows security guards evacuating the Rotunda. The National Archives said the Rotunda and galleries would remain closed to the public for the remainder of Wednesday due to cleaning, and the Rotunda will remain closed for cleaning on Thursday, February 15. The rest of the Archives will open on Thursday.

The suspects were arrested by D.C. police, but the U.S. attorney will process the case, meaning they are facing federal charges, Fox News Digital is told.

The two suspects appeared to be connected to the climate activist group “Declare Emergency,” which demands that President Biden “declare a formal state of climate emergency and begin [to] make full use of his executive authority to save this country from collapse.”

The group retweeted footage of the Rotunda, writing: “We don’t want the end of civilization but that’s the path we’re currently on.”

Researchers ‘blown away’ by contents of 1,700-year-old Roman egg

Archaeologists in the U.K. were shocked to learn that a 1,700-year-old Ancient Roman egg discovered in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire still had a yolk inside, according to reports.

The discovery of the egg was announced in December 2019, after archaeologists with Oxford Archaeology completed a dig in Aylesbury between 2007 and 2016.

The experts found a basket containing four eggs in a waterlogged pit, which they believe may have been used as a “wishing well.” However, when the eggs were removed from the environment, three of the eggs broke, and they let off what was described as a “potent stench.”

The remaining egg survived, and according to the BBC, it underwent a micro-CT scan that revealed what was inside.

WRECK OF MERCHANT SHIP THAT SANK IN 1940 FOUND IN LAKE SUPERIOR

Oxford Archaeology senior project manager Edward Biddulph oversaw the excavation and described to the media outlet that it was “amazing” to find the only intact egg from the period in Britain, but “absolutely incredible” that the egg still had its original contents.

“We were absolutely blown away when we saw the contents in there, as we might have expected them to have leeched out,” he said.

The dig took place before the development of housing at Berryfields in Aylesbury, and along with the eggs, archaeologists found dozens of coins, shoes, wooden tools and what was described as a “very rare” basket.

Biddulph said at the time of the announcement that the “wishing well” may have operated similar to modern-day wishing wells.

“Passersby would have perhaps stopped to throw in offerings to make a wish for the gods of the underworld to fulfill,” Biddulph noted, adding that the eggs are a rare find. “The Romans associated eggs with rebirth and fertility, for obvious reasons. We have found chicken bones and broken eggshells in Roman graves in Britain before, but never a complete egg.”

The archeology firm did not immediately respond to inquiries from Fox News Digital regarding the latest discovery involving the egg.

The BBC reported that conservator Dana Goodburn-Brown, who has conducted additional work with the egg, took it to the University of Kent for analysis.

ARCHAEOLOGISTS DISCOVERED 1,700-YEAR-OLD ROMAN EGGS AND ACCIDENTALLY RELEASE ‘WORLD’S OLDEST STINKBOMBS’

“It produced an amazing image that indicated that the egg, apart from being intact – which is incredible enough – also retained its liquid inside, presumably deriving from the yolk, albumen etc.,” Mr. Biddulph said.

The egg has also traveled to London’s Natural History Museum, where the extraction of the egg’s contents without destroying the egg was discussed.

Having traveled several places, now, the egg is located in Aylesbury at the Discover Bucks Museum, as experts continue to determine how to get the contents of the egg without cracking the shell.

“It’s a bit like blowing an egg – but obviously a much finer process,” Mr. Biddulph told the BBC.

“There is huge potential for further scientific research, and this is the next stage in the life of this remarkable egg.”

Joe Rogan blasts media for ‘gaslighting’ about Biden’s mental fitness

Podcaster Joe Rogan mocked the media and politicians for defending President Biden’s mental acuity even when he can be seen making conspicuous gaffes.

Many of Biden’s allies have rushed to defend the commander in chief following the release of Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report on classified documents that characterized Biden as an “elderly man with a poor memory.”

“There’s enough gaslighting out there now where you can say wild s–t, absolutely wild s–t,” Rogan said in an interview on Tuesday, recalling California Gov. Gavin Newsom enthusiastically defending Biden in a recent interview.

Rogan spoke in disbelief about how brazenly President Biden is defended by media and politicians even as he “forgets what he’s talking about,” and nobody “on the left” wants to address it.

FLASHBACK: DEMS RAN DEFENSE ON BIDEN’S AGE BEFORE SPECIAL COUNSEL PUT DAMNING SPOTLIGHT ON HIS ‘POOR MEMORY’

“Everyone’s so terrified of Trump being president they’re like, ‘Blah blah blah I don’t hear anything! I don’t see anything!’ They can’t say anything, it’s nuts,’” he said.

Rogan argued “there’s too many people” out there that can “see this gaslighting.”

The podcaster said their mentality is like, “You’re gaslighting me about something that is so in my face, how can I trust you about what’s going on in Ukraine? How can I trust you about Yemen and Syria? How can I trust you about Gaza? How can I trust you about the Nord Stream pipeline? How can I trust you, if you won’t tell me that you think something’s up right here, this thing that’s right in front of our face?”

Rogan then slammed a recent opinion piece in the Los Angeles Times titled, “Age matters. Which is why Biden’s age is his superpower.”

BIDEN TORCHED FOR CLAIMING THAT HE RECENTLY MET WITH DEAD FORMER PRESIDENT OF FRANCE: ‘NOT A HEALTHY SIGN’

Rogan said his reply to such rhetoric is, “Hey, I’m right here! F— off! F— off with this, you’re talking crazy!”

As he praised Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. later in the podcast, he contrasted him with Biden: “I don’t think Joe Biden is even capable of having a debate at this point, he can’t even keep track of what he’s talking about, he’s talking about people that have been dead for years, mistaking names, he fumbles in the middle of sentences, he forgets what he’s talking about and says he’s being told to wrap it up, so look, it’s embarrassing.”

Rogan went on to argue, “It’s elder abuse, also. If that was my dad, and they were forcing my dad to do that, I’d be like ‘leave him the f— alone, he’s 80 years old.’ The guy should be chilling somewhere, he should be relaxing in a zero-stress position.”

Ben Affleck’s Dunkin’ tracksuit sells out in 19 minutes after hit Super Bowl commercial

The extended edition of Dunkin’s hit “DunKings” Super Bowl ad has gone live amid the coffee and donut chain seeing major demand for its affiliated merchandise.

Its debut came just a handful of days after the original, 1-minute version with Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez, Matt Damon and other stars showed in a commercial break during the Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers.

In the now nearly 4.5-minute ad, Affleck takes steps to try to get himself ready for a performance and show his new “DunKings” boy band to his wife. Damon and retired NFL quarterback Tom Brady are part of the boy band.

The coffee and donut chain on Monday released a four-item line of merchandise, including the track jackets and pants donned by the “DunKings,” to accompany the ad campaign. The line also includes drink tumblers that come in the Dunkin’ orange and pink and a bucket hat.

Dunkin’ told FOX Business it only took 19 minutes for the “DunKings” tracksuits and bucket hats to sell out once they became available for purchase. That, the chain said, helped in “making it the fastest we’ve ever sold out of a collection on ShopDunkin.com.”

The jackets and hats went fast again when the coffee and doughnut chain restocked Tuesday with four times as much inventory, Dunkin’ said.

DUNKIN’ TO STOP OVERING CUSTOMERS COCONUT MILK OPTION

It has fulfilled “DunKings” merchandise orders from all over the country.

Of the four items in the collection, the track jacket has seemingly proven the most popular among fans. They sold out the fastest, Dunkin’ told FOX Business.

Dunkin’s webpage for the collection showed the track jacket and bucket hat remained sold out as of Wednesday afternoon. Meanwhile, the matching pants and tumblers are available for pre-order.

Merch wasn’t the only thing Dunkin’ released in connection to the “DunKings” ad campaign.

DUNKIN’ TAPS BEN AFFLECK, ICE SPICE TO PROMOTE NEW DRINK THAT’S MIXED WITH ACTUAL MUNCHKINS

It launched a limited-time “DunKings” menu of five items and published a full-length “Don’t Dunk Away At My Heart” song. The “DunKings” iced coffee, which Affleck orders at the chain, and the Munchkins skewers made cameos in the “DunKings” commercial.

Dunkin’, which is headquartered in Massachusetts, has over 13,200 locations around the world.

FOX NEWS POLL: Trump, Biden locked in tight battle in key swing state

Despite Michigan voters disapproving of the job President Joe Biden is doing, many also say their family finances are holding steady or getting better — and that leads to a tight race between the incumbent and former President Donald Trump in the Wolverine State.

In a hypothetical 2024 presidential matchup, Biden receives 45% support to Trump’s 47% in a Fox News survey of Michigan registered voters. Trump’s 2-point edge is well within the survey’s margin of sampling error.

Biden won Michigan in 2020 by less than 3 points. In 2016, Trump took the state by less than half a point — and that’s the only time the state went red since 1988.

Biden’s best groups include those that traditionally go Democratic, including liberals, Black voters, suburban women, those voting on the abortion issue, and voters with a college degree. He’s also ahead with those living in union households, voters ages 65 and over, and women.

NATO MEMBERS BRACE FOR TRUMP WIN AS RECORD NUMBER OF MEMBERS MOVE TO MEET SPENDING PLEDGES

While he still has a substantial lead among Black voters, Biden’s 68% share today is down significantly from the 93% he won in 2020, according to the Fox News voter analysis election survey. He’s also lagging his 2020 numbers among women, voters under age 45, men under 45, and independents.

In 2020, Biden won voters under 45 and independents, but both groups now favor Trump.

Trump’s strongest support comes from conservatives, those saying immigration and border security are extremely important to their vote, White evangelical Christians, Whites without a college degree, and rural voters. He’s also favored by younger voters, men, White voters, and independents.

In addition, party loyalty also plays a big role in Trump’s advantage, as 93% of Republicans back him compared to 89% of Democrats for Biden.

In a potential 5-way race, Trump’s advantage over Biden widens to 5 points (42% vs. 37%), with third-party candidate Robert F. Kennedy receiving 11%, Jill Stein 3%, and Cornel West 2%.

In this scenario, 77% of 2020 Biden voters stick with him, compared to Trump holding onto 87% of his 2020 voters.

“Third-party candidates are draining twice as much support from Biden as from Trump,” says Democratic pollster Chris Anderson, who conducts Fox News surveys with Republican Daron Shaw. “While many currently supporting third-party candidates will gravitate back to major party candidates by Election Day, a low level of third-party support could make a difference in a close election if the defections come disproportionately from Biden.”

The economy is the top issue in Michigan, as 6 in 10 say it will be extremely important in deciding their presidential vote. About half say the same about election integrity, immigration and border security, and health care. Fewer cite abortion, foreign policy, climate change, and the Israel-Hamas war.

Of course, partisans see things differently on the issue front. Three-quarters of Republicans prioritize the economy and immigration/border security. For Democrats, the top two issues are health care and abortion, as over half say those will be extremely important to their decision. Election integrity comes in third among both Democrats (48%) and Republicans (57%).

MEET 5 DEMOCRATS WHO HAVE BEEN FLOATED AS POSSIBLE BIDEN REPLACEMENTS

Republicans are three times more likely than Democrats to prioritize immigration/border security, while Democrats are four times more likely than Republicans to say climate change is extremely important.

More Michigan voters trust Biden than Trump to handle climate change, abortion, election integrity, and health care.

More prefer Trump on the issues of immigration/border security, the economy, Israel-Hamas, and foreign policy.

Each candidate is favored on four issues, but Trump is trusted by double-digit margins on two of the highest priorities, including the top issue the economy, while Biden is preferred by smaller single-digit margins on ones that are somewhat less important to voters.

“Even though Trump is the challenger and has had to negotiate a competitive primary, he has locked down almost all Republican partisans,” say Shaw. “The issue climate isn’t terrible for Biden here, but he has significant work to do to recover Democrats and traditionally Democratic constituencies. If he can’t improve his showing with African Americans and younger voters, he is heading toward a one-term presidency.”

In the Middle East conflict, Michigan voters are twice as likely to side with Israelis over Palestinians.

Looking at views among voting blocs show some of Biden’s challenges on this issue. While most Republicans side with Israel, Democrats split between Israelis and Palestinians, and liberals and young voters are more likely to favor Palestinians.

Overall, Biden’s job rating in Michigan is negative by 12 points: 44% approve of his performance as president, while 56% disapprove. That’s a touch more positive than how he’s doing nationally.

Michigan voters feel fairly positive about their finances, with over half saying their situation is holding steady or improving — and both of those groups heavily support Biden.

Some voters have concerns about Biden and Trump.

A minority of Trump supporters, about 2 in 10, say it is at least somewhat likely that concerns about his legal problems could cause them to rethink voting for him.

That number is a it higher for Biden, as about 3 in 10 of his backers say it is at least somewhat likely worries about his mental soundness could make them reconsider their support.

Poll-pourri

Some 18% of Michiganders who voted for Biden in 2020 disapprove of the job he’s doing today and 12% don’t support him in the 2-way matchup against Trump. In fact, 6% of 2020 Biden voters currently back Trump.

One-third of voters who “somewhat” disapprove of Biden’s job performance still back him over Trump in the 2-way race.

HALEY BLAMES TRUMP FOR GOP LOSS IN KEY SPECIAL ELECTION AS SOUTH CAROLINA SHOWDOWN INTENSIFIES

Biden leads former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley by 9 points in the 5-way ballot test. Kennedy gets almost as much support as Haley in this scenario – in part because she only gets 50% of Republicans while 30% of them go for Kennedy.

It tightens to a 1-point Haley edge when it’s a head-to-head matchup.

Among the Republicans who identify as MAGA movement supporters (Above 4 in 10 Republicans), only 70% back Haley over Biden in the 2-way matchup, with 11% saying they woulnd’t vote.

Conducted February 8-12, 2024 under the joint direction of Beacon Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R), this Fox News Poll includes interviews with a sample of 1,106 Michigan registered voters randomly selected from a statewide voter file. Respondents spoke with live interviewers on landlines (202) and cellphones (626) or completed the survey online after receiving a text (278). Results based on the full sample have a margin of sampling error of ±3 percentage points. When necessary, weights are generally applied to age, race, education, and area variables to ensure the demographics of survey respondents are representative of the registered voter population.

‘Squad’ member votes ‘present’ on resolution to condemn Hamas’ sexual violence

The House on Wednesday passed a bipartisan resolution condemning Hamas terrorists’ use of rape and sexual violence as weapons of war during — and since — the attacks in Israel on Oct. 7.

The resolution, introduced by Rep. Lois Frankel, D-Fla., and endorsed by 200 co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle, passed in a vote of 418 to 0.

Democrat Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., voted “present.”

“Our bipartisan resolution says it loud and clear: rape and sexual violence are crimes against humanity and should never be used or accepted as weapons of war,” said Rep. Frankel.

REPUBLICANS PUSH TO RESUSCITATE UKRAINE AND BORDER TALKS AS DEMS URGE GOP TO SIDESTEP JOHNSON

The resolution “condemns all rape and forms of sexual violence as weapons of war, including those acts committed by Hamas terrorists” and calls on “all nations to criminalize rape and sexual assault, and hold accountable all perpetrators of sexual violence, including state and non-state armed groups.”

“There are some subjects that are so difficult to talk about, but it is our responsibility to do so,” Rep. Frankel said from the House floor Wednesday.

“Hamas’ actions on Oct. 7 and continuing is almost too difficult to speak about, raping, mutilating and burning to inflict psychological pain and unleashing trauma that continues to plague a grieving Israel,” she said.

“Shockingly and alarmingly, Hamas’ violence has been met with a shrug from many corners in the world, and many deny it. Such weapons have been used throughout history and around the world to terrorize and traumatize victims, but that doesn’t make it OK. It must never be normalized. Our resolution makes it clear sexual violence is a crime against humanity,” Frankel said.

Rep. Tlaib said she was “disturbed” that the resolution “completely ignores and erases any sexual violence committed” allegedly committed by IDF forces. Those claims are unsubstantiated.

The resolution also calls on all international bodies to “unequivocally condemn the barbaric murder, rape, sexual assault, and kidnapping by Hamas and other terrorists” on and since Oct. 7 and hold accountable all perpetrators.”
