Live Sunak insists Tories ‘united’ despite calls to replace him

Rishi Sunak insisted his Conservative Party is “united” despite a call for him to be replaced before the general election and reports of Cabinet ministers discussing his future.

Dame Andrea Jenkyns, a Tory MP and a vocal critic of the Prime Minister, told the BBC’s Today Podcast, published this morning, that “I personally want a new leader before the election”.

And a report by Bloomberg published today said Cabinet ministers have discussed privately whether the Tories might be forced to replace Mr Sunak before the next election.

Asked about Dame Andrea’s comments during a visit to Gloucester, the Prime Minister replied: “I think actually the party is united in wanting to make sure that we don’t have the Labour government, because our plan is the right one for the country.”

A group of Russian soldiers fighting for Kyiv who launched a cross-border attack on several Russian towns claim they have taken prisoners and advanced deep inside Russian territory.

The soldiers fighting against Vladimir Putin have pushed “several dozen kilometres” inside Russia and captured prisoners on behalf of Ukraine, said a commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps, one of the groups who launched the attack.

Another group, the Freedom of Russia Legion, earlier urged civilians to flee Belgorod and Kursk as it launched large-scale attacks on military targets in the Russian border cities throughout the day.

Alexei Baranovsky, a volunteer soldier for the group, said that fighting had broken out in five settlements inside Russian territory, with footage circulating on social media showing buildings and cars on fire, reportedly caused by shelling.
