Biden tells nation he will finish term after Dems push him out of race
President Biden addressed the nation for the first time on Wednesday since bowing out of the 2024 election on Sunday, saying he is passing the torch to “a new generation” while again throwing his support behind Vice President Harris in her campaign to secure the Democratic Party’s nomination.
“I decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. It’s the best way to unite our nation. You know, there is a time and a place for long years of experience in public life. There’s also a time and place for new voices, fresh voices, yes, younger voices. And that time and place is now,” Biden said.
The speech lasted roughly 11 minutes, with the president sitting at the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office while touting his years in political office and decision to bow out. Members of the president’s family were in attendance for the speech, including first lady Jill Biden, daughter Ashley Biden, son Hunter Biden and others.
The president said he looks forward to the work before him in his final six months in office, including pushing for Supreme Court reforms.
“I’m going to call for Supreme Court reform because this is critical to our democracy,” he said. Media reports recently surfaced that Biden is considering supporting legislation that would attempt to impose term limits on Supreme Court justices and a new enforceable ethics code.
BIDEN ENDS BID FOR 2ND TERM IN WHITE HOUSE AS HE DROPS OUT OF HIS 2024 REMATCH WITH TRUMP
Biden announced his exit from the presidential race on Sunday in an X post while self-isolating in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, after a COVID-19 diagnosis last Wednesday. After suffering “mild symptoms” and “general malaise” after his diagnosis, he received a negative diagnosis on Tuesday this week and returned to the White House.
His trip to the nation’s capital on Tuesday marked the first time Biden was seen in public since suspending his re-election bid on Sunday and the first time since being diagnosed with COVID-19 on July 17.
His speech Wednesday evening included citing American forefathers and political leaders while arguing that “democracy is at stake” this election cycle as the Democratic Party squares up against former President Donald Trump.
“Thomas Jefferson wrote the immortal words that guide this nation. George Washington showed us presidents are not kings. Abraham Lincoln implored us to reject malice. Franklin Roosevelt, who inspired us to reject fear. I revere this office, but I love my country more,” he said.
“It’s been the honor of my life to serve as your president, but in the defense of democracy, which is at stake, I think is more important than any title. I draw strength and I find joy in working for the American people. But this sacred task of perfecting our union, it’s not about me. It’s about you.”
Members of the Biden family were seen tearing up and hugging the president after he wrapped up his speech.
GOP SENATOR DEMANDS CABINET INVOKE 25TH AMENDMENT AGAINST BIDEN AFTER SUSPENDING HIS RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN
Trump responded to the speech on Truth Social, saying it was “was barely understandable, and sooo bad!”
The 46th president had faced mounting pressure from his Democrat allies and legacy media outlets to bow out of the race since June 27, when he delivered a botched debate performance against Trump that was riddled with garbled remarks and where the president lost his train of thought and appeared more subdued than during other recent public events.
The debate reignited concern among conservatives and critics that Biden’s mental acuity had slipped, while it marked the beginning of a pressure campaign among Democrats to oust Biden in favor of a candidate they believed is better suited to take on Trump.
TRUMP SAYS BIDEN ‘IS NOT FIT TO SERVE’: ‘WHO IS GOING TO BE RUNNING THE COUNTRY FOR THE NEXT 5 MONTHS?’
Dozens of members of Congress began publicly thanking Biden for his work in the White House and decades in public office while calling on him to pass the torch to another candidate.
Shortly after his announcement on Sunday afternoon, Biden endorsed Harris to pick up the mantle and make a run for the party’s nomination. As of Tuesday, Harris had enough delegates to lock up the nomination, which will be certified by the DNC next month.
He added in his speech on Wednesday that Harris is “tough” and “capable” while touting her as the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee.
“I’d like to thank our great Vice President Kamala Harris. She’s experienced. She’s tough. She’s capable. She’s been an incredible partner to me and a leader for our country. Now the choice is up to you, the American people,” he said.
10 DEMOCRATS VICE PRESIDENT HARRIS COULD NAME AS HER 2024 RUNNING MATE
Now that the president has dropped out of the election cycle, conservative lawmakers and others have called on Biden to resign from the White House, arguing that if he is unable to run for re-election, he’s unfit to run the nation for the roughly six months left of his tenure.
“If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President. He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough,” House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said in a statement on Sunday.
Others have called on Harris to invoke the 25th Amendment while concerns mount over Biden’s health. Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles sent a letter to Harris on Thursday requesting that she invoke the 25th Amendment, exclusively telling Fox News Digital that Biden left the race “because he isn’t up for the job of president, and everyone in America knows it.”
“I’ve said for over a year that Biden’s ever-declining health has rendered him incapable of leading the nation. With his recent reclusion following a supposed COVID diagnosis, it is now more apparent than ever that he must resign or be forced out. Since Biden has made it clear he will not resign, it is imperative that Vice President Harris move forward with invoking the provisions of the 25th Amendment to remove him forcibly. The safety and well-being of the American people and our nation depend upon it,” Ogles said.

Biden’s announcement on dropping out was made just more than a week after an assassination attempt on Trump’s life during a rally in Pennsylvania and just days after the Republican National Convention wrapped up in Milwaukee, where Trump was officially declared to be the Republican Party’s nominee.
Fighter jets scramble to intercept Russian bombers over Alaska before Biden address
Ahead of President Biden’s first address in the Oval Office since announcing he was dropping out of the presidential race, the North American Aerospace Defense Command Public Affairs (NORAD) says it sent out fighter jets to intercept two Russian Tu-95 “Bear” bombers and two Chinese H-6 bombers off the coast of Alaska.
In a press release, the agency confirmed that it detected, tracked, and intercepted two Russian TU-95 and two PRC H-6 military aircraft operating in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) on July 24.
NORAD fighter jets from the United States and Canada conducted the interception.
NATIONAL SECURITY EXPERTS WARN AGAINST ‘CHAOS’ OF US ELECTIONS AS HARRIS ENTERS RACE
This is the first time Russia and China have flown a joint bomber patrol off Alaska, Fox News correspondent Lucas Tomlinson reported.
This report came less than an hour before Biden was set to address the nation in his first public address since he announced he would not be running for a second term in office.

“The Russian and PRC aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace. This Russian and PRC activity in the Alaska ADIZ is not seen as a threat, and NORAD will continue to monitor competitor activity near North America and meet presence with presence,” the agency said.
It has not yet been determined if this is related to Biden’s address.
Brave patriot rescues fragment of American flag as pro-Hamas agitators burn it
An unnamed patriot reached into a smoldering heap Wednesday to rescue an American flag from burning at the hands of pro-Hamas agitators.
The man, who wanted to remain anonymous, was able to successfully save a fragment of Old Glory. He told a local journalist who recorded the incident that he is an attorney who works near Union Station in Washington D.C., where the anti-Israel demonstrations happened.
In a video taken by Richie McGinniss and shared via X, the man stoops down into the flames and takes a fragment of the burning flag with his bare hands.
An angry mob rushes after the unnamed man carrying the burned flag, shouting “Get him!” and banging drums.

In the chase, a pro-Hamas agitator can be seen tripping over a skateboard. The anonymous patriot barely escapes through the crowd, running out of Columbus Circle.
In a later video post, McGinniss shares that the unnamed man said, “I grabbed what I could out of the fire and ran.”
“I’m ashamed I didn’t stop and go back and get the rest of it,” the man told McGinniss.

Have battlegrounds shifted with Kamala Harris at the top of ticket? Here’s what the polls say
President Biden’s decision to drop out of the race and Vice President Kamala Harris’ rise to the top of the ticket have thrown the state of the race into question and possibly shifted the battleground strategy.
Biden was trailing former President Donald Trump nationally in the Real Clear Politics polling average and the seven major swing states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, but underlying data could reveal what Harris might do to change that.
While polls showed Biden holding his own among older, white working-class voters, the president was starting to lose his grasp on Black and Hispanic voters, a key demographic for Democrats. Harris, on the other hand, has recently been outperforming Biden among Black voters, indicating there is room for her to gain ground on Trump in a close election.
HARRIS REPEATS DEBUNKED CLAIM TRUMP WANTS TO ‘BAN’ ABORTION DURING FIRST CAMPAIGN RALLY SINCE BIDEN QUIT RACE
According to one Politico/Morning Consult poll conducted last month, Harris held a 67% favorability rating among Black voters, compared to 23% who had an unfavorable view of the vice president. Biden, meanwhile, came in with a 63% favorable rating, compared to 31% who held an unfavorable view of the president.
An NBC News poll conducted earlier this month revealed similar results when pitting both Biden and Harris against Trump, with Biden beating Trump 69% to 12% among Black voters, a 57-point lead, while Harris led the former president 78% to 14%, a 64-point advantage.
When Biden was still in the race, most of the swing state attention was given to the so-called “Blue Wall” states in the upper Midwest of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. However, Harris’ strength among Black voters could lead the vice president to look south towards Georgia and North Carolina as opportunities to close the gap.
DEM VOTERS AT MILWAUKEE RALLY SAY THEY’RE FIRED UP FOR HARRIS: ‘UNITED AND ENERGIZED’
According to 2020 census data, Georgia and North Carolina have a Black population of 31% and 20.5% respectively, far more than the populations of Michigan (13.7%), Pennsylvania (10.9%), and Wisconsin (6.4%). On the other hand, those states in the upper Midwest have a higher share of older White voters, a demographic in which Biden was outperforming Harris.
Polling of a matchup between Trump and Harris is so far sparse, especially in battleground states, but there are some early indications that Harris may look south for help. One Landmark Communications poll, which was conducted Tuesday, shows Trump with just a one point lead over Harris in Georgia, a smaller advantage than most of the polling had previously shown the former president enjoyed in a matchup against Biden.

While winning both Georgia and North Carolina would likely not be enough to put Harris over the top, her ability to put them in her column would open up several more viable paths to victory. Without them, Harris would likely need to win all of the other five swing states in order to get to 270 electoral votes.
The Harris campaign did not immediately respond to a Fox News request for comment.
416 House lawmakers vote in favor of creating Trump assassination attempt panel
The House of Representatives unanimously voted to establish a bipartisan commission to investigate the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.
No lawmakers voted “no” nor “present,” and 416 voted “yes.” Ten Democrats and six Republicans did not vote.
The task force will be comprised of seven Republicans and six Democrats, with the members likely being announced this week.
House GOP leaders raced the bill to the floor after the deadly shooting at Trump’s Butler, Pennsylvania, rally nearly two weeks ago. One attendee died, and two others were injured, with Trump himself getting shot in the ear and evacuated off the stage by the Secret Service.
TRUMP SHOOTING: TIMELINE OF ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW GUNMAN EVADED SECURITY
The vote was bipartisan, as expected — the hours following the shooting prompted a flurry of bipartisan condemnations against political violence, as well as scrutiny of the security situation that allowed a 20-year-old gunman with a rifle onto a rooftop just outside the rally perimeter.
“The security failures that allowed an assassination attempt on Donald Trump’s life are shocking. In response to bipartisan demands for answers, we are announcing a House Task Force made up of seven Republicans and six Democrats to thoroughly investigate the matter,” Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said in a joint statement on Tuesday. “The task force will be empowered with subpoena authority and will move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability, and make certain such failures never happen again.”

The resolution was led by Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., whose district the shooting took place in and who was in attendance but unharmed.
Johnson told Fox News Digital in an interview last week that he wanted the panel to reach a conclusion as soon as possible — in part, at least, “so that people don’t make up their minds about some conspiracy theory or some sinister plot.”

“Some of those rumors have begun already, and we have to address that immediately,” he said “The idea of a task force is that we can have sort of a precision group or unit that goes to work on this immediately. It’ll be bipartisan and will have subpoena authority. I think that’s going to be very important to get the answers as quickly as possible.”
The bipartisan scrutiny of the security situation forced U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to resign on Tuesday.
Police say would-be Trump assassin was not the only ‘suspicious person’ at rally
BETHEL PARK, Pa. – In addition to would-be Trump assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks, other suspicious people were noted by security at the Butler, Pennsylvania event, Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris told the House Committee on Homeland Security.
“Was [Crooks] the only one determined to be suspicious that day?” Rep. Andrew Garbarino asked Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris on Tuesday.
“No, he was not,” Paris replied.
“They identified Crooks for not matriculating,” Colonel Paris said. “Crooks never made it through the secure perimeter into the venue space itself.”

There were at least two other suspicious people identified and tracked by the law enforcement that day – but after spotting Crooks with a rangefinder, he became a “special individual,” who was “even more suspicious,” he said.
Law enforcement officials spotted 20-year-old Crooks at about 5:10 p.m. on July 13, identifying him as a “suspicious person of interest.”
At 5:41 p.m., about 20 minutes before former President Donald Trump took the stage, a sniper spotted Crooks looking at his phone and a rangefinder, snapped a photo and sent it to the “Sniper Group” chat.

“There was a text thread that was going,” Paris said on Wednesday. “They took a photo of him at some point when he utilized the rangefinger. The suspicion was heightened… I know from an interview that was immediately relayed in the command post to the Secret Service.”
Just over ten minutes later, the Secret Service spotted him on the roof of a building about 150 yards away from the podium where Trump was set to address the crowd. A law enforcement officer was assigned to monitor the roof of the building – but a whistleblower told Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley that the officer left their post because it was “too hot.”
Less than 20 minutes afterward, Crooks fired a volley of shots from the roof.

“Before [Trump] went on to speak… just to be clear, [Crooks] was determined to be suspicious,” Paris said. “There was no information that he possessed a weapon.”
Crooks was also determined to be suspicious because “he was walking around and not moving into the venue,” Paris said.

“Just for some context, there were over 100 people that day that necessitated or required medical attention due to the heat, there was a missing six-year-old,” he added.

Slew of social media posts come back to haunt Biden team: ‘It’s a scandal’
The White House communication team’s credibility surrounding knowledge of President Biden’s political future is in the national spotlight after telling the public for weeks that Biden would not drop out of the 2024 race while simultaneously battling questions from the press about mounting concerns over his health.
“All you can do is shake your head. No one at the White House has any credibility when it comes to Joe Biden’s health. From Vice President Harris to the White House physician to everyone in the press office, they covered up the president’s frailties. They hid the truth. It’s a scandal,” former George W. Bush White House press secretary Ari Fleischer told Fox News Digital.
When asked to respond, White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said, “You mean the same Ari Fleischer who told the American people over 100 lies while making the case for the Iraq War? That Ari Fleischer?”
Voters and social media commenters across the nation have sounded off in recent days that the communications team was “out of the loop” as concerns mounted surrounding Biden’s health and subsequent claims that he would exit the 2024 presidential race.
When Biden did announce his departure from the race, only a handful of White House and campaign officials — such as Vice President Kamala Harris, chief of staff Jeff Zients and campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon — were made aware ahead of the letter, while some senior officials learned of the decision in a Zoom call, and most others through Biden’s public announcement on X, media outlets reported.
BIDEN WON’T PARDON HUNTER, WHITE HOUSE REAFFIRMS, BUT CRITICS AREN’T SO SURE
The White House communications shop, which is led by press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, had for weeks shut down claims Biden would drop out, while describing Biden’s health as above board and no reason for concern.
“Absolutely not,” Jean-Pierre declared in a press briefing on July 3 when asked if Biden had any plans to exit the 2024 race.
Jean-Pierre’s messaging had been backed up by Bates, who frequently issued statements to the media that Biden was in the race to win while brushing off questions about the president’s health.
“The president told both leaders he is the nominee of the party, he plans to win and looks forward to working with both of them to pass his 100-days agenda to help working families,” Bates said last week in a comment to The New York Times.
WHITE HOUSE, FAMILY OFFER CONFLICTING ACCOUNTS IF BIDEN’S HEALTH INFLUENCED DECISION TO DROP OUT
“That is not happening, period,” Bates said Friday when asked if members of the Biden family were discussing the president’s exit plan. “The individuals making those claims are not speaking for his family or his team — and they will be proven wrong. Keep the faith.”
Soon after the June 27 CNN debate, worried party leaders mounted a pressure campaign on Biden to exit the race, as dozens of elected Democrats commended the president for his service in the White House, but called on him to pass the torch to another candidate better suited to take on former President Trump. Media reports cited sources who described top Democrats such as former President Barack Obama, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., as working in the background on efforts encouraging Biden to drop out.
Although the media reports mounted that Democratic leaders were working to galvanize the party without Biden ahead of the Democratic National Convention, the White House communications team continued brushing off the reports as hogwash.
TRUMP CALLS FOR NEXT PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE TO BE HELD ON FOX NEWS
Bates, for example, went on a social media campaign shooting down media reports that Biden’s exit from the race was imminent. Meanwhile, Jean-Pierre continued touting the president’s record in office on her X account, including that Biden “will continue to defend reproductive freedom” and that he had “been hitting the road and meeting directly with the American people” in the days following the debate.
Despite the full-throated denial that there were even discussions that the president should bow out, Biden ultimately stepped aside in a tweet on Sunday afternoon.
WHAT COMES NEXT FOR DEMOCRATS AFTER BIDEN’S CAMPAIGN SUSPENSION?
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden said in his letter posted to X on Sunday afternoon announcing his departure from the race.
Media reports shortly following the announcement indicated White House staffers and members of the campaign were shocked by the news, learning of the decision via the X post and through a Zoom call on Sunday.
Biden had been self-isolating at his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, after a COVID-19 diagnosis last week. He returned to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday and will address the nation in more depth regarding his exit from the race on Wednesday evening from the Oval Office.
GOP CONGRESSMAN CALLS ON HARRIS TO ‘IMMEDIATELY’ INVOKE 25TH AMENDMENT OVER BIDEN’S ‘DECLINING HEALTH’
Following his exit from the race, social media commenters sounded off that key White House communications team staffers were “out of the loop” on Biden’s plans to leave the race or mocked staffers such as Bates.
The calls for Biden to drop out of the race were born out of his poor debate performance last month against Trump, where he stumbled over his words, lost his train of thought and appeared more subdued than his typical public demeanor. The June 27 debate opened the floodgates to traditional allies and legacy media outlets to call on him to drop out, though conservatives and critics had for years said Biden’s mental fitness was concerning.
As questions surrounding the president’s health mounted, the White House communications team juggled an onslaught of questions regarding whether the president was suffering from an illness such as Parkinson’s disease.
The media’s interactions with Jean-Pierre and the communications team became more heated, as reporters pressed the spokeswoman for answers on the president’s health, and called into question the team’s credibility.
Jean-Pierre was pressed by the media during a fiery exchange earlier this month to speak to whether a Parkinson’s disease expert’s eight visits to the White House were related specifically to Biden’s health. Jean-Pierre, instead, refused to confirm the doctor by name. She did confirm a neurologist had examined Biden three times for his three yearly physicals since taking office.
GOP SENATOR DEMANDS CABINET INVOKE 25TH AMENDMENT AGAINST BIDEN AFTER SUSPENDING HIS RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN
”They’re in the White House visitor logs. It’s public. I looked it up before I came out here. It is right there for anyone to see,” CBS News reporter Ed O’Keefe said during a presser early this month when questioning the press secretary about Dr. Kevin Cannard being listed eight times on White House visitor logs.
“I cannot from here confirm any of that because we have to keep their privacy. I think they would appreciate that, too,” Jean-Pierre said.
“The patient or the doctor?” O’Keefe asked.
“We have to keep their privacy,” Jean-Pierre replied.
TRUMP SAYS BIDEN ‘IS NOT FIT TO SERVE’: ‘WHO IS GOING TO BE RUNNING THE COUNTRY FOR THE NEXT 5 MONTHS?’
“It is public,” NBC News correspondent Kelly O’Donnell jumped in to say, while O’Keefe added, “You’re going to allow this to fester longer, Karine, unless the White House just answers the question.”
Jean-Pierre was grilled yet again in another press conference about Cannard’s visits, where she erroneously said one of the meetings this year was not related to Biden’s health.
“Can you say whether that one meeting [between Cannard and O’Connor] was related to care for the president himself?” the Associated Press asked.
“I can say that it was not,” Jean-Pierre responded.
The press secretary backtracked later that day, saying Cannard’s Jan. 17 meeting at the White House was in fact related to Biden’s health, specifically to the president’s yearly physical.
Reporters also called on the White House to allow Biden’s White House physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, to speak to them directly about the president’s health. The administration, however, argued that his written updates on Biden’s health and reports on his check-ups were sufficiently transparent.
“The thorough summaries Dr. O’Connor puts online for the public are far more extensive than the presidential medical documentation released during the previous administration,” Bates told Fox News Digital earlier this month when asked if O’Connor would speak directly to the media. “In fact, the American people heard from Dr. O’Connor through his daily written reports on President Biden’s COVID case for over two weeks straight — a condition he had the honesty to disclose right away, unlike Trump’s physicians in office.”
O’Connor has released repeated statements and updates on the president’s health since Biden took office, including when he was diagnosed with COVID, as well as updates on Biden’s annual physicals. He has, however, not joined a press briefing to field journalists’ questions.
“Dr. O’Connor teaches at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Science, completed U.S. Army flight surgeon training, and was among the first American service members in Afghanistan and Iraq. His unique expertise is sought across the medical community, in which he is respected for his candor, attention to detail, and work ethic,” Bates continued.
WHO IS WHITE HOUSE PHYSICIAN DR. KEVIN O’CONNOR AND WHAT ARE HIS CLOSE TIES TO THE BIDEN FAMILY?
The White House has said that Biden does not suffer from a disease such as Parkinson’s or dementia, or other types of degenerative illnesses.
Following Biden’s exit from the race, members of the GOP are calling on him to resign from the White House altogether.
“If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President. He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough,” House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said Sunday in a statement.

“If the Democrat party has deemed Joe Biden unfit to run for re-election, he’s certainly unfit to control our nuclear codes,” House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., said Sunday. “Biden must step down from office immediately.”
Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, had also called on Biden to resign in the lead-up to his bombshell announcement.

“If Joe Biden ends his reelection campaign, how can he justify remaining President?” Vance posted on X hours before the announcement. “Not running for reelection would be a clear admission that President Trump was right all along about Biden not being mentally fit enough to serve as Commander-in-Chief.
