Longtime California leader leaves Democrat Party to ‘make America great again’
A longtime former California Democratic legislative leader announced Wednesday she no longer “recognize[s her] party,” while noting she still considers many of its historical figures, including former President John F. Kennedy, her “heroes.”
Gloria Romero, who served as the state Senate majority leader for three years of her more than 10-year stint in Sacramento, slammed the current state of her former party.
Romero said she had been a delegate to the Democratic National Convention for both Jesse Jackson and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., adding that many Latinos and Latinas are leaving the party for similar reasons.
“Today, I say ‘Goodbye – adios’ — I’ve had enough,” the former San Gabriel Valley lawmaker said in her announcement.
CALIF BILL AIMED AT MAKING IT EASIER FOR MIGRANTS TO BUY HOMES MAKES MAJOR ADVANCEMENT
“I am now another near-lifelong Democrat who is joining the growing number of people … who are leaving the Democratic Party.
“Today, I join the Republican Party to make America great again, and I am ready to do my part as America prepares to vote,” Romero said, adding she has received a warm reception from her onetime political opposition.
She claimed she could not stand by as Democrats took “a giant leap to authoritarianism [and] censorship,” noting former President Reagan warned that if fascism rose in the U.S. it would come under the guise of liberalism.
“It is terrifying to see how language has been modified so that, as a feminist and a former professor … I would be condemned for saying that I can define a woman and distinguish between biological sex and gender identity,” Romero said.
“While I am pro-choice, I will not support a party that advocates for abortion to full term. I am a mother and refuse to call myself a ‘birthing person.'”
BIDEN’S BORDER CRISIS WREAKING HAVOC ON K-12 SCHOOLS SAYS TOP GOP LAWMAKER
“The Republican Party has become the party of peace while the Democrats have marched towards endless war.”
She also took aim at the Green movement within the Democratic Party, voicing opposition to regulations on appliances.
“[A]s a Latina, I will not give up my gas stove; you cannot toast a tortilla on an electric range,” she quipped.
Standing on the steps of the State Capitol in Sacramento, Romero said she officially aligns with the GOP under former President Trump, who she said is the true champion of working people and the Reaganesque “big tent.”
“I will vote for Donald Trump this fall,” she said.
Asked about Romero’s move, Los Angeles Democratic officials dismissed her official announcement as “old news.”
“We knew then about Gloria what California Republicans know best: the grift is real,” Mark Gonzalez, the former chairman of the county party, told the Los Angeles Daily News.
Another former party staffer said on X, formerly Twitter, the GOP is “drudg[ing] up old news to stay relevant.”
State Sen. Brian W. Jones, R-San Diego, the top Republican in the state chamber, welcomed Romero to the party, saying in a statement obtained by Fox News Digital that Romero had unsuccessfully tried to “wake up” her former party to its leftward shift.
“Her leadership and experience have always been about serving the people, not partisan politics. It takes real courage to step away from the party you’ve led and stand for what is right,” Jones said.

Current state Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil of Jackson also switched to the GOP in early August.
At the time, Alvarado-Gil said her former party is also “unrecognizable” and “lacks the will to fix the problems plaguing the state.”
JD Vance spokesman attacks news outlet for taking school shooting quote out of context
A spokesman for JD Vance blasted the Associated Press for publishing a headline Thursday that implied the Republican vice presidential candidate had dismissed school shootings as a “fact of life.”
In an exclusive comment to Fox News Digital, Vance spokesperson William Martin attacked the AP.
“This is yet another case of the fake news media brazenly lying about a Republican politician. Senator Vance said exactly the opposite of what the Associated Press claimed. It should come as no surprise that the AP lost any and all credibility it had years ago, because they will lie about literally anything in order prop up the Democrats. Meanwhile, Kamala Harris has called for all police officers to be removed from schools, putting children all over America at risk. It’s yet another example of how Kamala Harris’s weak, failed, and dangerously liberal agenda makes her unfit for office,” Martin said.
At a rally in Phoenix, Vance remarked on the recent mass shooting that took place at Apalachee High School in Barrow County, Georgia on Wednesday.
JD VANCE LAYS BARE THE ‘LIE’ AT THE ‘HEART’ OF KAMALA HARRIS’ CAMPAIGN: POLICIES ‘CAUSED HIGHER FOOD PRICES’
“I don’t like that this is a fact of life,” Vance said. “But if you are a psycho and you want to make headlines, you realize that our schools are soft targets. And we have got to bolster security at our schools. We’ve got to bolster security, so if a psycho wants to walk through the front door and kill a bunch of children, they’re not able.”
While reporting the quote, however, AP appeared to insinuate Vance called school shootings a “fact of life” in a callous or dismissive way.
“JD Vance says school shootings are a ‘fact of life,’ calls for better security,” the headline and X post originally read.
“Misleading headline: The full quote is, ‘I don’t like that this is a fact of life,'” a proposed X Community Note for the X post said.
AP later replaced both the headline and the X post, acknowledging the update.
The new headline reads, “JD Vance says he laments that school shootings are a ‘fact of life’ and calls for better security.”
“This post replaces an earlier post that was deleted to add context to the partial quote from Vance,” the AP posted.
CBS HOST ANNOYED WITH JD VANCE FOR CRITICIZING MEDIA FOR NOT FACT-CHECKING BIDEN: ‘EVERYTHING’S OUR FAULT’
Fox News Digital reached out to the AP for a comment.
The Harris-Walz campaign responded by attacking Vance and former President Trump.
“Yesterday, Vice President Harris said ‘it doesn’t have to be this way’ in response to another senseless school shooting. Donald Trump and JD Vance think school shootings are a ‘fact of life’ and ‘we have to get over it,’ Harris-Walz 2024 spokesperson Ammar Moussa said in a statement.
Moussa continued, “Vice President Harris and Governor Walz know we can take action to keep our children safe and keep guns out of the hands of criminals. Donald Trump and JD Vance will always choose the NRA and gun lobby over our children. That is the choice in this election.”

Hunter Biden reveals why he made decision that stunned federal prosecutors
First son Hunter Biden released a statement Thursday after he pleaded guilty to nine federal tax charges, saying he did so to “spare” his family from being “publicly humiliated” by a trial.
“I went to trial in Delaware not realizing the anguish it would cause my family, and I will not put them through it again,” Biden said. “When it became clear to me that the same prosecutors were focused not on justice but on dehumanizing me for my actions during my addiction, there was only one path left for me.”
“I will not subject my family to more pain, more invasions of privacy and needless embarrassment. For all I have put them through over the years, I can spare them this, and so I have decided to plead guilty,” he added.
“Like millions of Americans, I failed to file and pay my taxes on time. For that I am responsible. As I have stated, addiction is not an excuse, but it is an explanation for some of my failures at issue in this case. When I was addicted, I wasn’t thinking about my taxes, I was thinking about surviving,” Biden continued.
HUNTER BIDEN’S ‘HIGH DRAMA’ DAY IN COURT ENDS IN SHOCKING GUILTY PLEA
“But the jury would never have heard that or know that I had paid every penny of my back taxes including penalties.I have been clean and sober for more than five years now because I have had the love and support of my family. I can never repay them for showing up for me and helping me through my worst moments. But I can protect them from being publicly humiliated for my failures,” he said.
Biden, who chronicled his battle with addiction in his memoir, concluded his statement saying: “For anyone now going through the scourge of addiction, please know there is a light at the end of that seemingly endless tunnel. I was where you are now. Don’t quit right before the miracle.”
Hunter Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, said in a separate statement that “this plea prevents a show trial that would not have provided all the facts or served any justice.”
“There is no doubt this case was an extreme and unusual one for the government to bring. Unlike millions of Americans, Hunter was charged with felonies for his failures that occurred during the depths of his addiction to drugs and alcohol, and which he has since rectified by paying his overdue taxes in full with interest and penalties years before he was charged. In fact, he actually overpaid his taxes in the year he is charged with tax evasion,” Lowell added.
HUNTER BIDEN’S CRIMINAL TAX TRIAL BEGINS WITH JURY SELECTION IN CALIFORNIA
Special Counsel David Weiss charged President Biden’s son with three felonies and six misdemeanors concerning $1.4 million in owed taxes that have since been paid. Weiss alleged a pattern by which Hunter did not pay his federal income taxes while also filing false tax returns.
HUNTER BIDEN TAX TRIAL POSTPONED TO SEPTEMBER
In the indictment, Weiss alleged that Hunter “engaged in a four-year scheme to not pay at least $1.4 million in self-assessed federal taxes he owed for tax years 2016 through 2019, from in or about January 2017 through in or about October 15, 2020, and to evade the assessment of taxes for tax year 2018 when he filed false returns in or about February 2020.”
Hunter remains free on bond until the sentencing date on Dec. 16.

Biden faces a maximum penalty of 17 years in prison. In a press release Thursday, the Justice Department said that “actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.”
Angel Reese levels explicit allegation against Caitlin Clark fans
Angel Reese said what she wanted to say in her podcast debut on Thursday, all at the expense of Caitlin Clark fans.
In the first episode of her podcast, the WNBA Rookie of the Year contender used a segment to discuss her personal history with fans of her longtime rival, Clark.
Reese did not directly criticize Clark, but she reflected on the moment her interactions with Clark really began to ramp up. It occurred right when she made the celebratory gesture of pointing to her ring finger in Clark’s face during the final minutes of Reese’s and LSU’s NCAA title win over Clark and Iowa in the 2023 championship game.
It was a moment that Reese says “changed my life forever.” It was a moment that ignited a series of intense interactions between certain members of Clark’s passionate followers and Reese and some of her Chicago Sky teammates.
“I think it’s really just the fans, her fans, the Iowa fans, now the Indiana fans, that are really just, they ride for her, and I respect that, respectfully. But sometimes it’s very disrespectful. I think there’s a lot of racism when it comes to it,” Reese said.

Reese went on to list death threats and people coming right to her home as an alleged example of a measure Clark’s fans have taken in response to their rivalry.
“People have come down to my address, followed me home, it’s come down to that,” Reese said.
Reese even alleges that some fans have made AI-generated images of her, depicting her without clothes on, and sent them to her family members.
“Multiple occasions, people have made AI-images of me naked. They have sent it to my family members. My family members are like uncles, sending it to me like, ‘Are you naked on Instagram?’” Reese said. “It sucks having to go through that and see other players have to go through that.”
Reese’s rivalry with Clark has culminated in several controversial moments throughout their college and pro careers already. There have been several instances in which those moments have resulted in high-profile scrutiny of Reese.
CAITLIN CLARK BECOMES QUICKEST TO REACH WNBA SHARPSHOOTING MILESTONE, RECORDS 2ND TRIPLE-DOUBLE
After the initial moment in which Reese pointed to her finger in the 2023 NCAA women’s title game that she said “changed her life forever,” Barstool founder Dave Portnoy re-posted a video of the clip with the caption “Classless piece of s—,” on X. It’s a post that has 79.5 million views on X at the time of publication.
Portnoy levied similar attacks at Reese throughout the 2024 tournament and early in her WNBA career.
Similar incidents have happened to Reese’s Sky teammates for hard fouls on Clark in matchups against the Fever this season.
After committing a hard flagrant-1 foul that sent Clark flying across the floor in a game last week, Chicago’s Diamond DeShields posted screenshots of an Instagram user leaving hate comments on her post, referencing a tumor she had removed in 2020. That year, she was diagnosed with a benign tumor on her spinal cord in 2020. She risked paralysis when she had it surgically removed and suffered painful tremors while recovering from the procedure.
Sky guard Chennedy Carter committed one of the most scrutinized fouls of the WNBA season on Clark in an early June matchup, when Carter committed an illegal hip check on Clark while she was just standing there, knocking her to the hardwood.

She then responded to a flurry of criticism on social media for the foul with a post acknowledging it: “Troll notifications blowing up. I love it,” Carter wrote on X that day.
For Reese, Thursday was not the first time she has opened up about the treatment she gets online from Clark’s fans. After Reese and LSU lost to Clark and Iowa in this year’s Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament, Reese cried in the press conference as she revealed what kind of things she had been told that year.
“I’ve been through so much. I’ve seen so much. I’ve been attacked so many times. Death threats, I’ve been sexualized, I’ve been threatened. There are so many things, and I’ve stood strong every single time. I just try to stand strong for my teammates because I don’t want them to see me down and not be there for them. I’m still a human. All of this has happened since I won the national championship. I said the other day I haven’t [been] happy since then.”
Venezuelan gangbangers who allegedly overran apartment were released by Biden admin
Four Venezuelan national members of the Tren de Aragua gang arrested in Colorado have been confirmed as illegal aliens, per a statement from an ICE spokesperson to Fox News.
The Venezuelan nationals, ranging in ages from 19 through 24, all crossed the southern border through Texas illegally in 2022 and 2023, under the Biden administration. All four are now in ICE custody.
The four were arrested after a shooting which occurred near Nome Street Apartments, one of the apartment buildings in Aurora which had been overtaken by armed members of Tren de Aragua.

Jhonnarty Dejesus Pacheco-Chirinos, Jhonardy Jose Pacheco-Chirinos, Nixon Jose Azuaje Perez, and Dixon Jose Azuaje Perez were arrested in connection with an attempted homicide on July 28.
According to Aurora Police, “We can now confirm that [Jhonnarty Dejesus Pacheco-Chirinos] is a documented member of Tren de Aragua (TdA). He is the brother of Jhonardy Jose Pacheco-Chirinos, also known as ‘Cookie’ or ‘Galleta.”
“Additionally, two others who were arrested on that same day are suspected gang members. Their names are Dixon Azuaje-Perez, age 20, and Nixon Azuaje-Perez, age 19. Both were arrested for tampering with evidence in the July 28 shooting on Nome Street. These two have gang ties and are suspected to be members of TdA,” said the Aurora Police Department.
Surveillance footage from the apartment of the Romero family went viral last week depicting heavily armed members of the Tren de Aragua gang breaking down an apartment door in Aurora.
The Tren de Aragua transnational gang has around 5,000 members between Venezuela and the United States and has been known to engage in drug and human trafficking.

According to ICE, 24-year-old Jhonardy Jose Pacheco-Chirinos or “Cookie” was encountered by Border Patrol Agents in the Del Rio Sector, Texas in October 2022. Pacheco was then released and given a notice to appear. Currently, Pacheco has been given felony charges for assault with a deadly weapon, among others.
Jhonnarty Dejesus Pacheco-Chirinos, the brother of “Cookie,” was arrested for attempted murder and other charges. He was also apprehended at the Del Rio Sector, Texas in October 2022.
Both Nixon and Dixon Azuaje-Perez were apprehended by Border Patrol agents at Eagle Pass, Texas on August 22, 2023. The two were given notices to appear and placed under parole in the United States pending proceedings.
“Thanks to the failure of the Biden administration to secure the border, the people of Aurora and other Americans have suffered at the hands of the Tren de Aragua gang,” said Aurora City council member Danielle Jurinsky in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Republicans torch Walz admin for answer on how noncitizens made it onto state’s voter rolls
The administration of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, has not explained how noncitizens made it onto the state’s voter rolls, according to the Republican National Committee (RNC) and the Minnesota GOP, which penned a letter to the state’s Department of Public Safety.
Kevin Cline, election integrity counsel for the Republican National Committee, and David Hann, chairman of the Minnesota Republican Party, first wrote to the Walz administration last month flagging how a noncitizen, legally living in the state and fearful of jeopardizing his status, came forward to report receiving a primary ballot without having registered to vote.
Minnesota Department of Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson wrote back to Cline and Hann earlier this week.
His letter explained that the Department of Public Safety Driver and Vehicle Services Division (DVS) “takes many steps to ensure that only U.S. citizens’ information is forwarded to the Office of the Secretary of State.” That includes reviewing only a list of certain documents that qualify as proof of citizenship to determine if an applicant is a U.S. citizen. Procedures include a second review upon issuance of the applicant’s documents to verify their classification in the system.
MINNESOTA GOP DEMANDS PROBE AFTER NONCITIZEN CLAIMS RECEIVING PRIMARY BALLOT WITHOUT REGISTERING TO VOTE
If DVS finds a document has been classified incorrectly as valid proof of citizenship, DVS fixes the classification and does not send the record to the Office of the Secretary of State for automatic voter registration, Jacobson wrote. He added that DVS is also conducting “a thorough, manual review” of all records that have been identified as eligible for AVR since the law went into effect in 2023 “to ensure a fair and secure election this fall.”
This response did not satisfy Cline nor Hann, who noted in a new letter sent Thursday how Walz in March 2023 signed a bill into law allowing illegal noncitizens to receive driver’s licenses, also known as “Driver License for All.” Less than two months after signing that bill into law, Walz signed the “Democracy for the People Act,” permitting automatic voter registration through DVS, Cline and Hann said.
“While we appreciate your explanation of how the Driver and Vehicle Services Division (“DVS”) is supposed to function to ensure each applicant is a U.S. citizen, your response failed to explain how noncitizens made it through that process and ultimately made it onto Minnesota’s voter rolls,” Cline and Hann wrote Thursday, according to the letter obtained by Fox News Digital.
“This is no hypothetical; lawfully present noncitizens were registered to vote through your department, and Minnesota voters deserve transparency from your department to understand how this failure occurred and how it is being addressed.
“This issue is especially concerning since the chain of events leading to implementation of Minnesota’s AVR system, put in place by Governor and Vice-Presidential Candidate Tim Walz, gives the impression it was put in place to facilitate registration of noncitizens,” the letter says. “Minnesota’s voter registration system is clearly vulnerable to illegal voter registrations in its current form.”
Cline and Hann said it is “worrisome that your department is only now conducting a review of voter records identified as eligible for automatic voter registration (‘AVR’).
HARRIS VP PICK MINNESOTA GOV TIM WALZ LAVISHED ILLEGAL MIGRANTS WITH TAXPAYER-FUNDED ‘BLANKET OF BENEVOLENCE’
“This type of review should have been completed multiple times on a consistent schedule since AVR’s implementation,” they told Jacobson. “That your department is only now beginning the review process suggests it is being done because our previous letter exposed the flaws in the AVR system and highlighted noncitizens on the rolls.”
“Walz is completely aligned with Kamala’s radical agenda, opening the invasion at the border and giving illegal aliens free health care, free tuition and drivers licenses,” RNC Chairman Michael Whatley said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “This is a clear plan by the Democrats, as they continually put non-citizens first and Americans last. We are holding Walz and his administration accountable and demand a full review and removal of the non-citizens they have allowed on the voter rolls. Minnesotans, and Americans, deserve much better than the cancelation of their votes by Kamala and Walz.”
Fox News Digital reached out to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety for comment, but it did not immediately respond.
Cline and Hann demanded Jacobson provide “full and in-depth answers” as to “when were the citizenship checks outlined in your September 3, 2024, letter put into place,” “when will your ‘thorough, manual review’ begin, what will that review consist of, and when will it be completed,” and “will you share the results of this manual review with the public?”
The letter also seeks details on how Jacobson has been reporting to the OSS under 201.145, including how often a report is sent to the secretary of state, how many reports have been sent since the implementation of AVR and whether those reports include noncitizens who are not lawfully present in Minnesota. Jacobson was asked if he ever compared the reported individuals under 201.145 against his own AVR records, how many noncitizens have been issued a driver’s license and were also sent to OSS since the implementation of AVR and how many individuals have been sent to the secretary of state since the implementation of AVR.
“Has there been any pressure from the Governor’s Office or elsewhere to fast-track the registration process?” Cline and Hann asked.

“Minnesota voters should not have their votes diluted because your department failed to filter out noncitizens from the automatic voter registration system,” they concluded. “Mistakes have clearly been made in the design and/or implementation of the AVR system, but it is not too late to provide transparency and to address the issues before the election this November.”
Taylor Swift’s NFL era will carry on Thursday night when the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Baltimore Ravens to open the 2024 season.
Swift will be there to support her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, and the rest of the team as they start to pursue a third consecutive championship, The Athletic reported, citing a source briefed on security arrangements at the stadium.

Video from multiple Kansas City stations showed Swift’s plane arrive at an airport and while videos on social media appeared to show her at Arrowhead Stadium waving to eager fans.
As word trickled out that Swift and Kelce were dating, she appeared at Arrowhead Stadium to support the Chiefs against the Chicago Bears. Since then, she’s been ingrained in the organization and in the NFL. Swift was at multiple games throughout the season and showed up their win over the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LVIII.
Rumors swirled days before the game about Swift and Kelce breaking up at the end of September after a document surfaced online. Kelce’s reps denied that a plan existed and that lawyers were going to be involved.
The pop star showing up the game would certainly help put the rumors to bed.
TAYLOR SWIFT’S MAN TRAVIS KELCE ISN’T BOTHERED BY BEING CALLED ARM CANDY: ‘COMES WITH THE TERRITORY’
“She had just been so open to learning the game,” Kelce said on “The Rich Eisen Show.” “I think what makes her so good in her profession is that she’s so detailed in every aspect of it, from the words to her music and even the releases and the music videos and everything.
“She’s just so detailed and a part of it, that I think she was just curious about the profession.”
Swift will be on tour this season, so it appears she won’t be at every game, but her stamp of approval may be on some plays in the playbook. Kelce and Patrick Mahomes both suggested she came up with some plays.
“She’s a little biased and just creates plays for me. So we’ll see if they can make coach (Andy) Reid’s office,” Kelce said.

Viral trick for optimizing sleep may seem like a bad idea — but expert says it could really work
Caffeine and sleep may seem like polar opposites — but there may be a benefit to combining them.
The “napuccino” has become a popular method to optimize sleep and wake up with more energy by drinking a caffeinated beverage before lying down for a nap.
In a recent episode of the podcast “The Diary of a CEO” with Steven Bartlett, sleep expert Dr. Cheri Mah in Redwood City, California, introduced the napuccino as a “useful tool if you’re trying to have a temperate boost in alertness and performance.”
RARE SLEEP DISORDER CAUSES PEOPLE TO COOK AND EAT FOOD WHILE THEY’RE ASLEEP
A napuccino requires drinking a caffeinated beverage of choice before taking a 20- to 30-minute power nap, according to Mah.
The caffeine will begin to kick in 15 minutes after consuming it.
“If you’re able to fall asleep within five to 10 minutes while the caffeine will start to come on board, then when you wake up after 20 to 30 minutes … the caffeine will have kicked in,” she said.
GOING TO BED AFTER THIS TIME COULD LEAD TO POORER MENTAL HEALTH, A STANFORD STUDY FINDS
Research has shown that the energy from both the caffeine and the power nap is “more effective for alertness and performance improvement for a couple of hours,” compared to only drinking caffeine or napping alone, Mah said.
Fox News Digital reached out to Mah for further comment.
“By the time you get up from the nap (20 to 30 minutes), the caffeine is kicking in.”
Clinical psychologist Kelly Baron, PhD, director of the behavioral sleep medicine lab at the University of Utah, described the napuccino as a “really great and scientifically tested technique.”

“Having some caffeine, plus a short nap, is better than either one of those alone,” she told Fox News Digital.
“By the time you get up from the nap (20 to 30 minutes), the caffeine is kicking in.”
This method has been tested with certain activities, such as driving performance and shift work, Baron noted.
“Short naps with or without caffeine are proven techniques to boost performance for those experiencing sleepiness,” she said.
FEELING HUNGRIER THAN USUAL? YOUR SLEEP SCHEDULE COULD BE THE CULPRIT, AN EXPERT SAYS
Getting the standard seven to nine hours of sleep per night is ideal, the expert said, but that can be challenging for some people.
Los Angeles-based registered dietitian and nutritionist Ilana Muhlstein agreed that the napuccino can be a “great strategy to boost alertness,” but also noted it’s important to consider how people prepare their coffee.
“Drinking coffee with a lot of added sugar or high-calorie creamers can offset some of the potential health benefits,” she said.

“Consuming too much sugar can lead to energy spikes and crashes, which might counteract the energizing effect of the nap and caffeine.”
Muhlstein suggested drinking black coffee, or with a splash of regular or plant-based milk, zero-calorie sweetener like Stevia, or monk fruit.
“This way, you’re reaping the benefits of the napuccino without the drawbacks of excess sugar or calories,” she said.
Up to 400 milligrams of daily caffeine is deemed safe for most healthy adults, according to Mayo Clinic.
Heavy caffeine use can cause side effects for some. Anyone with concerns should speak with a health care provider.
