Canada’s Liberal Party projected to win in election influenced by Trump’s term
Canada’s Liberal Party is projected to win the country’s federal election for the fourth consecutive time.
The Liberals, led by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who took over after Justin Trudeau resigned earlier this year, won the majority in a shocking turnaround sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats of annexation and his tariffs on America’s close ally and northern neighbor.
As of late Monday, the Liberal Party was leading with 161 seats won in Parliament as opposed to the 150 seats held by the Conservative Party. A party needs to win 172 of Parliament’s 343 seats to hold the majority.
Carney won his Ottawa riding on Monday. He is the first prime minister to represent a capital riding since Canada’s first prime minister, John A. Macdonald. Former Liberal deputy prime minister and finance minister Chrystia Freeland, whose resignation last December led to Trudeau announcing his plans to resign in January, won re-election in her Toronto riding.
TRUMP THREATS BOOSTED CANADA’S CARNEY, HURT CONSERVATIVES AS COUNTRY VOTES FOR NEW LEADER
The Liberals were projected to win more seats than the Conservatives when polls closed, although it was not immediately clear if they would secure an outright majority, which would allow them to advance legislation without needing votes from the minority.
The majority party appeared to be giving up control when Trump started a trade war with Canada and suggested the country should become a U.S. state. Trump’s moves infuriated Canadians and led to a surge in nationalism that aided the Liberals in flipping earlier election projections to retain power.
“We were dead and buried in December. Now we are going to form a government,” David Lametti, a former Liberal Justice Minister, told CTV.
“We have turned this around thanks to Mark,” he added.
The Conservative Party’s leader, Pierre Poilievre, sought to make the election a referendum on Trudeau, whose popularity dropped before he ultimately stepped down in January.
In Trudeau’s final months, Trump repeatedly referred to him as Canada’s governor amid continued comments about turning the country into America’s 51st state. After Trudeau resigned, Carney, a two-time central banker, became prime minister and the Liberal Party’s leader.
Trump even suggested on election day that he was on the ballot and again said Canada should become the 51st state. He also incorrectly claimed that the U.S. subsidizes Canada.
“It makes no sense unless Canada is a State!” he wrote on Truth Social.
Poilievre responded to Trump, urging him not to attempt to influence Canada’s elections.
“President Trump, stay out of our election. The only people who will decide the future of Canada are Canadians at the ballot box,” he wrote on X. “Canada will always be proud, sovereign and independent and we will NEVER be the 51st state. Today, Canadians can vote for change so we can strengthen our country and stand up to the United States.”
Trump’s attacks have frustrated many Canadians, leading many to cancel U.S. vacations, refuse to buy American goods and possibly even vote early. A record 7.3 million Canadians cast ballots ahead of election day.
“The Americans want to break us so they can own us,” Carney said before the election. “Those aren’t just words. That’s what’s at risk.”

Carney and the Liberals made history by securing the party’s fourth consecutive term, but there are challenges ahead.
In addition to the sweeping U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, Canada has been facing a cost-of-living crisis.
More than 75% of Canada’s exports go to the U.S., so Trump’s tariffs threat and wish for North American automakers to move Canada’s production to the U.S. could severely hurt the country’s economy.
On the campaign trail, Carney promised that every dollar the government collects from counter-tariffs on U.S. goods will go toward Canadian workers adversely affected by the trade war.
Best-selling author found dead on houseboat as police search for killer
A best-selling German author was found murdered on her houseboat as police search for the suspect responsible for her death.
Police in Hamburg said a 58-year-old woman, who was later identified by the Guardian as Alexandra Fröhlich, a bestselling novelist, was found lifeless by her relatives on her houseboat on Tuesday morning.
One of Fröhlich’s three sons found her body, according to police. Authorities believe she died between midnight and 5.30 a.m.
After investigators looked over the evidence, authorities said they now believe that Fröhlich died “as a result of violence.”

“Investigators are currently investigating possible suspects. However, given the ongoing investigation, no further details can be provided at this time,” police shared in a news release.
According to German media outlet NDR, police believe Fröhlich was killed by “massive violence” and had been shot.
The outlet reported that Fröhlich lived on a houseboat on the Holzhafenufer in the Moorfleet district of Hamburg.

Trump to reduce impact of auto tariffs as industry makes effort to return to US
President Donald Trump is expected to announce a decision to reduce the impact of tariffs on automakers on Tuesday in Michigan, FOX Business confirmed.
A source within the Trump administration said the decision follows the auto industry’s good-faith efforts to move manufacturing back to the US, adding that Trump wants to give them a “runway” with their business.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the president is “building an important partnership” with “domestic automakers and our great American workers.”
“This deal is a major victory for the president’s trade policy by rewarding companies who manufacture domestically, while providing runway to manufacturers who have expressed their commitment to invest in America and expand their domestic manufacturing,” Lutnick said.
CAR DEALERS MOVE TO COMBAT IMPACT OF TRUMP AUTO TARIFFS WITH AI TOOLS
The reduction will prevent automakers who are already paying tariffs from also being hit with duties on steel and aluminum, the Wall Street Journal reported. Automakers would also allegedly be reimbursed for tariffs already paid.
TRUMP’S TARIFFS COULD DRIVE UP AUTO REPAIR COSTS, EXPERTS SAY
The tariffs were decided on by the Trump administration in an attempt to boost domestic manufacturing and there were plans to impose a separate 25% tariff on auto parts beginning May 3.
Initially, parts that comply with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement would be exempt, though the Commerce Department was expected to develop a plan to impose the tariff on non-U.S. components.
The agency was also expected to establish a process for imposing tariffs on other auto parts by late June.

Since a 25% tariff was imposed on all imported passenger vehicles in April, car experts have been concerned that the cost of new vehicles across the industry would take a massive hit.
The National Automobile Dealers Association raised concerns this year over “matching customers with vehicles they can afford,” describing it as “a continuing challenge for America’s new car and truck dealers.”
China is exhibiting ‘end-of-regime conduct,’ expert warns of ‘perplexing’ behavior
Something is “very, very wrong” in Beijing right now, according to foreign policy expert Gordon Chang, who is signaling more “end-of-regime conduct” coming out of Xi Jinping’s China.
“At a time when China needs friends because it’s not selling goods to the U.S., it is going out of its way to antagonize not just the Philippines, not just Taiwan, but also South Korea and Australia,” Chang, a senior fellow with the Gatestone Institute, said on “Mornings with Maria” Monday.
“This shows that… this is end-of-regime conduct, because Xi Jinping, he can’t appear to be giving in to the U.S.,” he added.
On Friday, President Donald Trump told reporters from the White House lawn that he’s spoken to Jinping “many times” now, before responding to a question about what exactly the two leaders discussed: “I’ll let you know at the appropriate time. Let’s see if we can make a deal.”
CHINA IS ‘CAVING’ TO TRUMP’S TRADE WAR STRATEGY, EXPERT SIGNALS
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Friday that Beijing backs international rules when it comes to tariffs imposed by Trump and that the U.S. levies show “extreme egoism.” He explained that China would look for solidarity with other countries regarding the tariffs, noting that Beijing would uphold multilateralism to “inject stability into the world.”
Beijing has publicly denied any ongoing negotiations with the Trump administration to bring down America’s 145% tariff and China’s 125% tariff.
“[Jinping] has configured the Chinese political system so that it is hostile. And also, because he’s been making the claim that China has surpassed the U.S., he can’t look dependent on trade with the U.S.,” Chang explained. “And he certainly can’t look like he’s talking to the U.S. under pressure.”
“This is really very perplexing behavior, and it shows that something is very, very wrong in Beijing right now.”
A recent report from Reuters claimed China’s Ministry of Commerce taskforce is collecting lists of items that could be exempted from tariffs, from electronic goods to essentials, and is asking companies to submit their own requests.
Chang argues that China’s regime under Jinping cannot admit it’s not able to stand up to Washington.

“China, without any announcements, is not collecting tariffs on important goods. So for instance, some semiconductors, aviation products, industrial chemicals, medical devices, some medicines,” he listed.
“This is going to expand,” Chang predicted. “It means that China has made an important concession. But it’s not saying it’s making a concession, which is a fascinating insight into the Chinese political system right now, which has become both intransigent and inflexible.”

Navy fighter jet worth approximately $70M goes overboard aircraft carrier
The U.S. Navy on Monday said that an aircraft carrier responsible for launching strikes in the Red Sea against Houthi terrorists lost an F/A-18 Super Hornet that went overboard.
The USS Harry S. Truman lost the fighter jet and a tow tractor while operating in the vast waterway.
The plane was actively under tow in a hangar bay when the crew lost control of the aircraft. The jet and tow then went overboard and were lost, the Navy said.
Sailors towing the aircraft took “immediate action” to move clear of the aircraft before it fell overboard, the Navy said.

All naval personnel were accounted for, though one sailor sustained minor injuries. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Fox News Digital has reached out to the Navy for more information.
The F-18 Super Hornet is estimated to cost approximately $67.4 million, according to the Navy Air Systems Command.
This was not the first fighter jet to fall off the USS Harry S. Truman. An F/A-18 Super Hornet was lost at sea after falling off the aircraft carrier near Naples, Italy, after it was blown overboard by “unexpected” heavy winds in July 2022.
In December 2024, an F/A-18 Super Hornet was shot down over the Red Sea in an apparent “friendly fire” incident, the U.S. military said at the time.
Despite the most recent loss, the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, a coalition of U.S. warships deployed to the Red Sea, and an air wing remain fully mission-capable, officials said.
TRUMP’S USE OF WARSHIP FOR BORDER ENFORCEMENT A ‘SMART’ USE OF MILITARY FORCE, EXPERT SAYS
The strike group consists of the Truman aircraft carrier and nine squadrons of Carrier Air Wing 1, three guided-missile destroyers of Destroyer Squadron 28, and the Ticonderoga-class cruiser USS Gettysburg.
The aircraft carrier has been operating in the Red Sea, where it has launched strikes against Houthi terrorists in Yemen.
The Iran-backed group has claimed to have attacked the USS Harry S. Truman and its accompanying warships in recent weeks, as well as against merchant vessels navigating the Red Sea.

The attacks escalated after President Donald Trump launched a military campaign against the group on March 15. The Houthis have targeted ships in the Red Sea in solidarity with Hamas, following its Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel.
The U.S. military has pummeled over 800 targets since mid-March in a campaign aimed at eliminating the Houthis, according to a recent update from U.S. Central Command.

FDA issues urgent nationwide recall for bread brand sold throughout US
An urgent recall has been issued for a bread brand sold throughout the U.S. that could contain “glass fragments,” according to an alert from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The department issued an urgent alert for certain breads that are part of Upper Crust Bakery LP that were found to have “glass fragments on top of the bread.”
The rolls were sold at the retail level in Pennsylvania, California, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware and Ohio, according to the FDA.
PARENTS URGED TO KEEP FISHER-PRICE AVOCADO TOAST TOYS ‘AWAY FROM CHILDREN’ DUE TO RECALL
The bread types included in the recall include:
- Ancient Grains Hoagie roll in 4-ounce containers, recall number: F-0741-2025 in Lot #90
- Multigrain Sourdough rolls in 18-ounce containers, recall number: F-0742-2025 in Lot #90
- Whole Grain Multigrain rolls in 20-ounce containers, recall number: F-0743-2025 in Lot #92
All three products were packaged in corrugated paper cartons and are sold frozen.
In total, the FDA said 818 cases of Upper Crust Bakery bread are suspected of containing glass pieces, including 699 cases of the company’s 18-ounce multigrain sourdough packages, the largest portion of the recall.
CELERY SOLD AT WALMART IN NEARLY 30 STATES RECALLED OVER POSSIBLE LISTERIA CONTAMINATION
The agency said that 89 cases of four-ounce Ancient Grains Hoagie Rolls and 30 cases of 20-ounce Whole Grain Multigrain bread were also included in the recall.
The Maryland-based bakery first notified the agency on April 12, the FDA said in their announcement.
The FDA noted that this incident has been elevated to a Class II recall, meaning the product may cause temporary or medically reversible health problems, but is unlikely to lead to long-term serious injuries.
COMPANY RECALLS NEARLY 23K POUNDS OF BRATWURSTS OVER PLASTIC ISSUE
The agency said that ingesting glass fragments can cause injury to the consumer, which may include damage to teeth, laceration of the mouth and throat, or perforation of the intestine. It also poses a choking hazard threat.

Only a Class 1 FDA recall is more urgent, which the agency says “is the most serious type,” because it could lead to more severe health issues, including death. However, that type of recall is not linked to the packaged bread, according to the FDA.

The FDA said that anyone who purchased the recalled rolls should not eat them and either throw them away in a secure trash can or return them where purchased for a full refund.
It’s unclear if any injuries have been reported due to the glass fragments, but FOX Business reached out to the FDA and Upper Crust Bakery LP for more information.

Super Bowl champ destroys race narrative after Shedeur Sanders’ draft slide
Sports pundits concocted all kinds of conspiracy theories as to why Shedeur Sanders failed to be picked within the first two days of the NFL Draft over the weekend, with a lot of them pointing to race despite Cam Ward going No. 1 to the Tennessee Titans.
Sanders eventually fell to the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round. Sanders was considered to be one of the top quarterback prospects, but he was the sixth taken. It was the talk of the NFL all weekend.

On Monday, ESPN NFL analyst Damien Woody gave a simple reason as to why Sanders slid on “Get Up.”
“I think the NFL sent a message, saying you’re not that dude. Honestly. The overwhelming message I saw when Shedeur slid to the fifth round, the NFL was basically saying you’re not that guy. You’re good but you’re not that guy,” the two-time Super Bowl champion said.
“I’m here to tell everyone out there, everyone who watches the NFL Draft, who loves the NFL, trust me when I tell you this, if you’re that guy, they’re gonna pick you in the first round because the NFL and all these teams are in the winning business. If you can help a team win, they are going to pick you.
“The NFL clearly felt that Shedeur Sanders was a good prospect but he wasn’t what the young people call, he wasn’t him. And then on top of that, you factor in all the celebrity and everything that comes with Shedeur Sanders. … And I’m not the one that’s downplaying. It’s the NFL who ultimately said, you know what, when you combine that fact that we don’t think you are him, and you have all this celebrity and everything that comes with you, that is the ultimate recipe for why you found yourself in the fifth round.”
SHEDEUR SANDERS ENTERS CROWDED QUARTERBACK ROOM AS HE STARTS BROWNS CAREER
Multiple reports pointed to Sanders’ questionable pre-draft interviews as to why he fell. Sanders did not throw at the NFL Scouting Combine, electing to workout at his own showcase weeks before the draft.
Sanders addressed his fall in his first media availability.
“Nothing really affected me the last couple of days,” Sanders said. “I’m favored, I’m blessed. Besides that, it’s not really anything that changed. The love of the game is still the love of the game. When you get on the field, there wasn’t too much negativity being said. I know I gotta clean up some things in my game for me to be at my best, but that’s what I take each offseason one at a time and fix it.

“The main thing, I’m just proving — coach (Kevin) Stefanski and (general manager Andrew) Berry — that they are right. That’s it. They’re right about picking me. I’m a good decision. I’m a good draft pick for them, to be able to come in there and do what I need to do.”
