Trump announces new role for Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy

President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced he is tapping Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to serve as interim administrator of NASA, a move the president said reflects the growing importance of space in national priorities.

“I am pleased to announce that I am directing our GREAT Secretary of Transportation, Sean Duffy, to be Interim Administrator of NASA,” Trump posted to Truth Social. 

“He will be a fantastic leader of the ever more important Space Agency, even if only for a short period of time.”

The president praised Duffy’s performance at the Department of Transportation, calling his tenure “TREMENDOUS,” and sharing his work on air traffic control modernization and infrastructure revival. “Rebuilding our roads and bridges, making them efficient, and beautiful, again,” Trump wrote.

Duffy, a former congressman from Wisconsin and longtime Trump ally, accepted the role enthusiastically. “🚀 Honored to accept this mission. Time to take over space. Let’s launch.” he wrote on X.

Duffy replaces Janet Petro, who has served as acting NASA administrator since January. Trump withdrew Jared Isaacman’s nomination for the role in May.

Isaacman, a billionaire private astronaut and longtime associate of Elon Musk, was nominated by Trump in December 2024 but faced mounting scrutiny over ties to Musk and SpaceX, which some officials viewed as a conflict of interest.

According to The Associated Press, Trump said the decision to pull Isaacman’s name came after a “thorough review of prior associations” and growing concern over “corporate entanglements.”

NASA has increasingly factored into the Trump administration’s national defense, innovation, and economic agenda. Trump has long emphasized the strategic importance of space, launching the Space Force during his first term.

The White House did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

California bishop grants Catholics ‘rare decree’ amid Trump immigration crackdown

A Southern California bishop issued a rare decree on Tuesday excusing churchgoers from attending Sunday mass amid fears of immigration raids and detentions across the country. 

The dispensation by the diocese of San Bernardino, California, is in response to the Trump administration’s mass deportation operations. 

On Tuesday, San Bernardino Bishop Alberto Rojas announced his decree.

“All members or the Faithful in the Diocese of Jan Bernardino who, due to genuine fear of immigration enforcement actions, are unable to attend Sunday Mass or Masses on holy days of obligation are dispensed from this obligation,” he wrote. 

Meanwhile, Rojas encouraged parishioners to engage in alternative spiritual practices.

Normally, Catholic bishops have issued such decrees during times of natural disasters, war and other extreme events.

“In issuing this decree, I am guided by the Church’s mission to care for the spiritual welfare of all entrusted to my care, particularly those who face fear or hardship,” Rojas wrote.

The Diocese of San Bernardino is the sixth largest in the United States, and serves around 1 million Catholics in San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

Tuesday’s announcement came after immigration authorities conducted an operation at a Los Angeles park a day earlier. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass appeared at the scene demanding an end to the raid. 

“They need to leave, and they need to leave right now,” she said at MacArthur Park. “They need to leave because this is unacceptable!”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has heavily criticized President Donald Trump over his illegal immigration crackdown, said the decree was in response to the administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement tactics, including immigration raids on courthouses and public spaces.  

“Freedom of religion? Not in Donald Trump’s America,” Newsom wrote on X. “People now have to choose between their faith and their freedom.”

In response to his remark, a White House spokesperson noted that Newsom closed churches during the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving many churchgoers without a place to worship. 

“This is rich coming from Gavin Newsom who shuttered churches during the COVID-19 pandemic but reopened the movie industry, marijuana dispensaries, and other secular gathering places,” the spokesperson told Fox News Digital. “Religious Americans were locked out of their places of worship because of him. Newscum doesn’t care about religious liberty, he cares about flip-flopping around to try and exploit everything he can for perceived political gain.” 

Catholic priest and author James Martin praised the move by the diocese.

“It is a dramatic sign that not even Catholic churches are considered safe places any longer. Where are the voices for religious freedom now?” he wrote on X.  

In May, the Diocese of Nashville issued a similar decree in response to immigration enforcement activities.

“Our churches remain open to welcome and serve our parish communities, but no Catholic is obligated to attend Mass on Sunday if doing so puts their safety at risk,” the decree said at the time.  

China completes groundbreaking mission 22,000 miles above earth

China’s space program took a major stride this past week as two of its satellites seemingly docked together in what could have been the country’s first high-altitude attempt at refueling a satellite while in orbit.

The Shijian-21 and Shijian-25 satellites appeared to dock with one another last week more than 20,000 miles above the planet in geosynchronous orbit, in which a satellite’s orbital period matches the pace of the Earth’s rotation, according to news outlet Ars Technica.

While Chinese officials have not recently released any updates about the two satellites, civilian satellite trackers showed Shijian-21 and Shijian-25 moving closer together before becoming indistinguishable from one another, Ars Technica reported.

These two satellites docking in geosynchronous orbit could indicate that China has the potential to disable another country’s satellite in space, Ars Technica reported.

However, the U.S. Space Force has similarly been interested in orbital refueling as military satellites often have limited fuel supplies. The military branch is slated to perform its first-ever refueling of a U.S. military asset in orbit as early as next summer.

American officials may have taken note of the apparent docking by China last week, as two of the Space Force’s inspector satellites appeared to move closer to Shijian-21 and Shijian-25 following the maneuver, Ars Technica reported.

Geosynchronous orbit, which is situated at an altitude of around 22,236 miles, is popular among military and commercial satellites as it means they have a fixed view of the planet and can provide military forces with information like early warnings of missile attacks, according to Ars Technica.

In April, Space Force Gen. Chance Saltzman described China’s explosive advances in space as “mind-boggling” and warned the U.S. is on a path to losing its dominance in orbit.

Testifying before the bipartisan U.S.-China Commission, Saltzman said China is “heavily investing” in both ground-based and space-based weapons designed to disable enemy satellites, including kinetic strikes, radio-frequency jamming and directed energy weapons.

China also increased its military spending by 7% this year, stockpiling anti-satellite missiles and claiming to possess directed energy weapons that use concentrated energy beams to jam satellite signals.

The U.S. Space Force and NASA did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

NASA launches high-tech aircraft to find missing people amid deadly Texas flooding

In the wake of the catastrophic July Fourth floods that barreled through south central Texas, claiming 119 lives and leaving nearly 200 people missing, NASA dispatched two aircraft to aid local recovery efforts and search and rescue operations.

NASA’s high-altitude WB-57 aircraft took off from Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base in Houston on Tuesday, and will conduct aerial surveys using its DyNAMITE (Day/Night Airborne Motion Imager for Terrestrial Environments) sensor. 

The sensor will take high-resolution photos of the Guadalupe River and several miles of the surrounding area, which could accelerate emergency response times.

The aircraft are responding as part of NASA’s Disasters Response Coordination System, which was activated to support the flood emergency response in coordination with the Texas Division of Emergency Management, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and humanitarian groups.

“Persistent cloud-cover has made it difficult to obtain clear satellite imagery, so the Disasters Program coordinated with NASA’s Airborne Science Program at NASA’s Johnson Space Flight Center in Houston to conduct a series of flights to gather observations of the impacted regions,” according to a NASA statement.

Officials said the data will be provided to response teams and aid in rescue efforts and resource allocation.

The agency also sent its Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR), aboard a Gulfstream III, from NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, on Wednesday to collect observations over the Guadalupe, San Gabriel and Colorado river basins.

UAVSAR, which can spot water through vegetation, will be collecting data through the end of the week.

“The team’s goal is to characterize the extent of flooding to help with understanding the amount of damage within communities,” according to the statement.

The disasters program will create maps to analyze the severity of flooding and damage to buildings and infrastructure, which will be shared on the NASA Disasters Mapping Portal as they become available.

Carville ‘befuddled’ as New York politician refuses to denounce ‘intifada’ slogan

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville blasted New York democratic socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s refusal to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada,” which is associated with violence against Israel.

Queens, New York State assemblyman Mamdani, a Ugandan-born Muslim with Indian heritage, won the race to become the Democratic Party’s nominee for New York City mayor, but Republicans and even some Democrats have blasted the democratic socialist as too extreme.

Carville called Mamdani out during an appearance Tuesday on “The People’s Cabinet” podcast after host Daniel Koh mentioned the popularity of some of his economic ideas in New York City.

While Carville agreed the emphasis on affordability is similar to some of his own core ideas, he noted that there are generational sea changes happening in politics.

“One of the big changes is Israel just doesn’t hold much sway with younger Jewish voters,” Carville said.

“Yeah, I mean, come on, man, just, s—, just get it out your mouth,” Carville said in frustration.

“Why do you think he won’t do that?” Koh asked. “I mean, that seems to be a pretty non-controversial thing to condemn, right?”

“His father is an academic, and I think ‘intifada’ has different meanings to different people, alright?” Carville suggested. “To some it means kind of ‘opposition.’ To most people, myself, it means, you know, ‘violence.’”

According to the American Jewish Committee, the phrase “calls for people from around the globe to participate in rising up against Israel.” The Second Intifada against Israel in the early 2000s was marked by Palestinian terrorism, including suicide bombings against civilian Israelis.

“Look, I’m as befuddled as you are,” Carville added. “And he’s been given every opportunity to walk it back, okay, so I am quite befuddled by it. And people that I have an enormous respect for, Jonathan Chait and Hakeem Jeffries, are like, ‘Come on, man.’ S—, this ain’t this hard. I mean, you could just see the angst in their voice.”

“It is troubling,” he concluded.

House Minority Leader and fellow New Yorker Jeffries called out Mamdani after his win, warning, “‘Globalizing the intifada,’ by way of example, is not an acceptable phrase. He’s going to have to clarify his position on that as he moves forward.” 

“With respect to the Jewish communities that I represent, I think our nominee is going to have to convince folks that he is prepared to aggressively address the rise in antisemitism in the city of New York, which has been an unacceptable development,” he concluded.

Shark dragged on shore in bloody attack at affluent tourist destination

A fisherman in a wealthy beach vacation hot spot became the object of nature’s wrath while wrestling with a shark he caught during the July Fourth weekend. 

A 21-year-old man in Nantucket caught a common sandbar shark on Sunday and reeled it onto shore, according to the Nantucket Current. When he attempted to return the shark to the ocean, it bit him on the leg, causing a serious injury.

The unnamed victim was driven by friends to a local hospital, and later flown by Boston Medflight helicopter to a mainland hospital to be treated further for his injuries.

As the summer beach season is in full effect nationwide, instances of shark bites are increasingly being reported. 

On the same day as the Nantucket incident, a 40-year-old surfer named Matthew Bender of Winter Park, Florida, was attacked by a shark in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Benton suffered a 10-inch bite that severed muscles, tendons and nerves, but survived the attack. 

New Smyrna Beach is known as the “shark bite capital” of the United States, according to “Shark Week” host Forrest Galante, who recently spoke with Fox News Digital about summer safety tips for avoiding negative encounters with sharks.

On June 11, a 9-year-old girl snorkeling off the coast of Boca Grande, Florida, on the state’s Gulf Coast, sustained a gruesome shark bite that nearly severed her hand. Leah Lendel was rushed by helicopter to Tampa General Hospital, where she underwent a successful surgery involving artery grafts, bone reconstruction and nerve repair to save her hand. 

Later in June, a beachgoer was injured in an attack on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, another popular tourist destination for summer getaways. 

That incident “involved a patient with a leg injury consistent with lacerations typically associated with a shark bite,” according to Hilton Head Fire Rescue. 

Galante warned that the ocean is a shark’s domain.

“Now, a lot of people fear them, and they see them as mindless killing machines, but the truth is, these are just animals that sit at the top of the food chain,” he said. “And any time that we enter into the water, we’re entering into their domain. So, when there is a shark attack or a shark bite, that is simply because we have gone into a habitat where we as human beings don’t really belong, and we’re not the apex predator.”

Olympic legend caught on bodycam footage failing sobriety tests while on oxygen

U.S. Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton was seemingly in disbelief after police determined she failed a series of field sobriety tests during a DUI stop, as seen in newly released police body camera footage of her May 17 arrest in West Virginia, obtained by Fox News Digital.

The footage showed a Fairmont County police officer running the women’s gymnastics legend through a series of sobriety tests for more than seven minutes. 

She was seen detaching and re-attaching oxygen tubes from her nose in order to carry out the tests. Retton was diagnosed with a “rare form of pneumonia” in 2023.

Officers then asked if she had a valid driver’s license on her, to which she replied, “It’s in Texas.” 

After nearly 10 minutes of taking tests, one officer told another officer, “She failed all of it.” 

Retton gasped in disbelief. 

“I what!?” she asked. 

“You failed all your field sobriety, ma’am,” the first officer said. 

“No, I didn’t!” she retorted. 

“Yes, you did,” he insisted.

The former gymnast was then seen declining to take a breathalyzer test, as police officers informed her she would be arrested on suspicion of DUI. As the officers put her in handcuffs, she yelled to a nearby acquaintance, “They think I’m drunk!”

Footage later showed Retton being escorted to the police station. 

Upon her arrival there, she was seen telling an officer, “I mean, really.… I know, you know [who I am].”

There, Retton was seen agreeing to have her blood alcohol level tested via a blood test.

Retton’s mugshot showed her in a somber mood, seemingly on the verge of tears. 

The former gymnastics star was charged with one count of driving under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs on May 17, according to Marion County court records. She was released from jail after posting a personal recognizance bond of $1,500.

In a statement previously provided to Fox News Digital by Retton’s attorney, Edmund J. Rollo, the gold medalist admitted to driving under the influence and apologized. 

“I take full responsibility for my actions,” the statement said. “What happened was completely unacceptable. I make no excuses. To my family, friends and my fans: I have let you down, and for that I am deeply sorry. 

“I am determined to learn and grow from this experience, and I am committed to making positive changes in my life. I truly appreciate your concern, encouragement and continued support.” 

Retton also entered a no-contest plea, and a Marion County judge fined her $100, according to Rollo.

“Mary Lou Retton appeared in court this afternoon and entered a no-contest plea to a non-aggravated DUI charge stemming from a recent incident,” Rollo told Fox News Digital. “Mary Lou accepted full responsibility for her actions and received a standard $100 fine, consistent with sentencing guidelines for first-time, non-aggravated offenses in this jurisdiction.

“In keeping with her values, Mary Lou made no request for special treatment and was subject to the same legal process as any other individual. She is grateful for the professionalism of law enforcement and the court system, and she fully respects the outcome. Mary Lou has expressed a sincere desire to use this experience as a moment for reflection and accountability. She asks for privacy as she moves forward with her personal and professional life.” 

Retton was nicknamed “America’s sweetheart” during her gold medal-winning performance at the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles. She was just 16 when she scored perfect 10s in the floor exercise and vault in the final two rotations to become the first American woman to win the Olympic all-around title.

She earned five medals that year – one gold, two silver and two bronze.

After she retired from gymnastics, Retton became a motivational speaker and frequently shared messages about the benefits of proper nutrition and exercise.

She also served on the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under former President George W. Bush.

When Retton was diagnosed with a “rare form of pneumonia” in 2023, her family said at the time she was “fighting for her life.” She was admitted to an intensive care unit as doctors helped her fight the illness.

“This is serious, and this is life, and I’m so grateful to be here,” she said on NBC’s “Today” in 2024. “I am blessed to be here because there was a time when they were about to put me on life support.”

McDonald’s is about to bring back beloved menu item for first time in 9 years

The return of the McDonald’s snack wrap is right around the corner.

The fan-favorite, which was discontinued nationwide about nine years ago, will stage its comeback on the fast-food giant’s U.S. menus on Thursday. 

The snack wrap’s reintroduction has been highly-anticipated among many McDonald’s customers after the company early last month officially revealed July 10 as the date it would make its reappearance. 

When it re-launches on Thursday, McDonald’s said it will make the snack wrap with one of its McCrispy Strips. It will also have shredded lettuce and cheese within the tortilla.

The fast-food giant first introduced its McCrispy Strips in April, with all participating restaurants in the U.S. offering them as a permanent menu item by May 5.

MCDONALD’S TO HIRE UP TO 375,000 WORKERS THIS SUMMER

McDonald’s customers will have two flavor options — spicy or ranch — for the snack wraps.

The snack wrap will be a permanent offering “as long as you keep enjoying it at McDonald’s,” the Chicago-based company said on a website centered on the item.

McDonald’s plans to sell the snack wrap by itself and as a combo consisting of two snack wraps, medium fries and a drink.

McDonald’s on Wednesday made a humorous post on X about the upcoming arrival of the snack wraps, jokingly saying, “Heard HR say if ur late to work tomorrow bc u got the first snack wrap at 10:31am ur good.” The company’s CEO, Chris Kempczinki, also appeared to tease at the item in an Instagram video, saying, “It’s back.” 

The fast-food giant had long been foreshadowing the snack wrap’s return. 

In mid-April, the company hinted on social media that it would arrive “0x.14.2025.” Before that, McDonald’s U.S. President Joe Erlinger had revealed in early December that the company had plans to relaunch snack wraps in 2025, telling “Good Morning America” that they had a “cult following” and that he had received “so many emails into my inbox about this product.”

McDonald’s said its customers’ love for snack wraps made it decide to bring them back. 

“From countless social media posts to full-fledged petitions, they never gave up on their favorite menu item,” the company said. “They’re the ones who inspired us to make its return to the menu happen.” 

Kempczinski told analysts and investors in early May that the snack wrap “is going to be a great addition to the menu.” 

In February, Kempczinsk said during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call that there was “incredible energy for the return of snack wraps in the U.S. along with a few other markets.”
