Democratic socialist NYC mayoral nominee yanked from podium while answering questions

An endorsement event for Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, came to an abrupt end Monday when he was pulled offstage by a campaign aide. 

After accepting the American Federation of Musicians, Local 802’s endorsement, Mamdani answered a few questions about former Gov. Andrew Cuomo deciding to stay in the race as an independent candidate and his upcoming meeting with House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y.

About 20 minutes into the event, before Mamdani could continue answering reporters’ questions, his campaign staffers stepped in to say: “I think we’re done here. We’re going to go. Come on. We’re wrapping up, folks. Sorry folks. We’re wrapping up.”

But Mamdani stood by the podium, attempting to hear the reporters’ questions over the chorus of campaign aides’ voices, until the band on site for the event began playing “When the Saints Go Marching In.” With a smile on his face, Mamdani was pulled away when a campaign aide grabbed his arm.

Mamdani has kept a busy campaign schedule since securing the Democratic nomination last month.

He has hosted several endorsement events, including from the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) and New York Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat. The campaign has opened up questions to reporters at the end of these endorsement events.

The 33-year-old candidate is expected to host an event with fellow self-described democratic socialist, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., on Wednesday in Washington, D.C. Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Mamdani ahead of his primary win last month.

And during the endorsement event Monday, Mamdani confirmed his meeting with Jeffries later this week. Jeffries told Fox News Digital he would meet with Mamdani at home in Brooklyn at the end of the week. 

The House Minority Leader has yet to endorse Mamdani since he secured the Democratic nomination.

The Trump administration filed a request with the courts to suspend a temporary restraining order (TRO) that was issued on Friday against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that ruled the agency likely violated constitutional protections through its immigration enforcement practices in Los Angeles.

In a 53-page order issued Friday, U.S. District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong, a Biden appointee, barred ICE from conducting detentive stops in the Central District of California unless agents have “reasonable suspicion” that a person is in the country unlawfully. 

Frimpong’s ruling explicitly prohibits ICE from relying solely on race or ethnicity, speaking Spanish or English with an accent, location, or type of work when forming suspicion, citing the Fourth Amendment.

In its filing on Monday, the Trump administration said the lawsuit was originally filed by three individual aliens requesting to be released from immigration detention.

“But, apparently seeking to manipulate the process of judicial assignment, the original petitioners’ counsel then filed an amended complaint adding a host of new individual and organizational plaintiffs, leveling systemic challenges to federal immigration enforcement in the Los Angeles area,” the Trump administration wrote. “And a day later, on the eve of the July 4 holiday, they filed an ‘emergency’ ex parte motion asking the court to impose a straight-jacket injunction that would vastly restrict the government’s ability to stop and detain anyone on suspicion of being unlawfully present in the United States.”

The Trump administration also said the court gave them just two business days to respond to hundreds of pages of discovery.

“The result is a sweeping, district-wide injunction that threatens to bobble lawful immigration enforcement by hanging a Damocles sword of contempt over every immigration stop,” the Trump administration said. “The government seeks an immediate stay of that untenable order pending appeal, and an administrative stay in the meantime.”

The Trump administration argued that Frimpong ignored the recent Supreme Court ruling involving the president that rejects universal injunctions – the judge’s ruling on Friday was not nationwide but instead was focused on Los Angeles and the Central District of California.

“Immediate relief is warranted here not only because of the magnitude of the court’s legal errors, but also their practical consequences for the separation of powers and the government’s sovereign prerogatives,” the filing reads. “It is untenable for a district judge to single-handedly ‘restructure the operations’ of federal immigration enforcement and usurp ‘ongoing judicial supervision of an agency normally, and properly, overseen by the executive branch.’”

Frimpong presided over a hearing Thursday where she considered granting the request that will have major implications for immigration enforcement in California, a state that has become a focal point in President Donald Trump’s aggressive deportation plans.

The judge heard arguments about whether to grant the TRO against ICE over allegations the agency is violating constitutional rights during its immigration arrests.

Frimpong said during the hearing on Thursday that she was leaning toward granting the TRO Friday.

“I think it’s important for the court not to burden otherwise lawful law enforcement activities,” the judge said.

The case was initially brought in June as a routine petition from three detainees, but it has ballooned into a weighty lawsuit challenging the way ICE operates.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, on Friday, praised the federal court’s decision to issue a temporary restraining order halting what she described as “unconstitutional and reckless raids conducted under the Trump Administration.”

She characterized the federal actions as aggressive and harmful and reaffirmed Los Angeles’ commitment to protecting its residents’ rights.

Immigration rights groups and local governments, including the cities of Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Culver, and West Hollywood, have all intervened in the case and Democrat-led states have filed an amicus brief in support of them.

The plaintiffs alleged in court papers that ICE is “indiscriminately” arresting people with “brown skin” at Home Depots, car washes, farms and more. Authorities made the arrests with no “reasonable suspicion” and sometimes mistakenly apprehended U.S. citizens in the process, all in violation of the Fourth Amendment, attorneys wrote.

The plaintiffs argued the Trump administration gave ICE an unrealistic quota of 3,000 arrests per day, causing officers to feel pressured to blow past legal requirements to achieve those numbers.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration is disputing the allegations and denies wrongdoing.

Department of Justice attorneys wrote that immigration arrests, of which there have been nearly 3,000 across California since early June, have been carried out legally.

Left-wing Bluesky accounts defended Vice President JD Vance’s young children facing jeers and boos during their trip to Disneyland over the weekend.

Vance was with his wife Usha and their children at the California amusement park where they faced cheers and boos from park attendees. Their trip also drew a large protest outside the Grand Californian Hotel and along Disney Way over the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

As news about people booing Vance and his family, including his children, spread on the social media site Bluesky, some users encouraged the jeers for the kids to learn that their dad “is a piece of s—.”

She added, “Also, JD Vance knows he’s going to be booed at Disneyland or the Kennedy Center or wherever. He doesn’t have to go with his kids, but…he probably wants the optics of his family being booed. So…yeah.”

“He uses his kids as human shields,” former Ohio congressional candidate Shannon Freshour replied, linking to a story about Vance being confronted by pro-Ukrainian protesters while with his young daughter.

“This is gonna sound snarky but if your dad is a piece of s— it’s better to realize it sooner rather than later,” former HuffPost reporter Michael Hobbes wrote.

University of Washington associate professor and astrophysicist Sarah Tuttle commented, “[I]t turns out finding out that JD vance is being booed in Downtown Disney is exactly the news I needed.”

“Also, unless those kids have burner accounts on bluesky, hearing ordinary people boo is literally the only way they will learn he’s a piece of s—,” author Elon Green wrote. 

The Vance’s three children are 3, 5 and 8 years old.

Ghislaine Maxwell’s lawyer takes aim at Trump as Supreme Court battle heats up

The Department of Justice on Monday asked the Supreme Court to deny Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghilaine Maxwell’s appeal of her sex-trafficking conviction, a move that comes as the department has recently come under fire for its handling of Epstein’s case files.

Maxwell, 63, was convicted by a jury in New York in 2021 of five counts involving sex trafficking of a minor and conspiracy. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Maxwell appealed her conviction, saying it should be tossed out for several reasons, including that a plea deal Epstein reached with the federal government in 2007 immunized her and that statutes of limitations had run out.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit denied her appeal, but Maxwell argued that circuit courts have issued disparate orders about what kind of immunity is granted through non-prosecutorial agreements, such as the one Epstein received in 2007, and that the Supreme Court should weigh in.

Maxwell is serving out her prison sentence in Tallahassee, Florida. It is set to end in 2037.

The DOJ’s response to the high court comes after the department recently ignited fury among a faction of President Donald Trump’s supporters by announcing it had no new information to release related to Epstein’s case. Epstein was charged in 2019 with sex trafficking underage women, but he died before he could stand trial. Authorities ruled his death was caused by suicide.

Some Trump DOJ officials had advanced theories that the government was hiding information related to Epstein’s case, but they have since walked back those claims.

Congress could call on Maxwell to testify before lawmakers. Citing anonymous sources, the Daily Mail reported Monday that Maxwell is interested in doing that. Maxwell’s attorney did not respond to a Fox News Digital’s request for comment on the report.

Her attorney did, however, take a jab at the Trump DOJ over its position on Maxwell’s appeal.

“I’d be surprised if President Trump knew his lawyers were asking the Supreme Court to let the government break a deal,” attorney David Oscar Markus said. “He’s the ultimate dealmaker — and I’m sure he’d agree that when the United States gives its word, it should keep it. With all the talk about who’s being prosecuted and who isn’t, it’s especially unfair that Ghislaine Maxwell remains in prison based on a promise the government made and broke.”

Mom of six dead from suspected poisoned protein shakes as dentist husband stands trial

Jury selection kicked off Monday for the high-stakes trial of James Craig, the hometown dentist accused of poisoning his wife’s protein shakes while secretly carrying on a sordid affair and plotting a new life without her.

James Toliver Craig, 47, is charged with first-degree murder after deliberation in the March 2023 death of his wife, Angela Craig, a 43-year-old mother of six. Her cause of death was determined to be lethal doses of cyanide and tetrahydrozoline.

Defense attorney Kelly Hyman outlined the strategic battlegrounds she expects to see in the courtroom as Craig’s murder trial unfolds.

Craig’s defense, led by Lisa Fine Moses, has already pursued two cornerstone motions, a motion to suppress electronic evidence and a motion to dismiss the charges, that set the tone for the weeks of courtroom wrangling ahead.

“Evidence is key to any case and a key motion that is filed in criminal cases are Motions to Suppress evidence and a Motion to Dismiss the charges,” Hyman explained to Fox News Digital.

A motion to suppress evidence is a request to exclude evidence that can be made by a defendant in a criminal case.

“A defendant does this because the defense believes that the evidence in question was obtained illegally or constitutionally in violation of a defendant’s rights,” she said.

Central to the prosecutor’s case against the Aurora, Colorado, dentist is Craig’s alleged use of a work computer.

A suspected secret email account was not found on his phone, laptop or Angela’s phone — it was only accessed on the clinic computer in dental exam room No. 9, authorities said in court documents, obtained by Fox News Digital.

Investigators say that, in the weeks before his wife’s hospitalization and death, Craig used a dental-office computer to search for “undetectable poisons” and how to obtain them — later purchasing arsenic and cyanide by mail — as well as “how many grams of pure arsenic will kill a human” and “is arsenic detectable in an autopsy?”

Alongside these online searches, investigators alleged that Craig made YouTube queries such as “how to make poison” and “Top 5 Undetectable Poisons That Show No Signs of Foul Play.”

“The defense argued that the searches went ‘beyond the scope’ of the search warrant,” Hyman said. “However, a judge has already denied motions to suppress electronic evidence.”

“That being said, it is likely defense counsel will continue to challenge the admissibility of various evidence gathered by the prosecution, such as voice messages between Craig and his alleged mistress.”

Beyond those fundamental motions, Hyman warned that the battle over forensic evidence could prove pivotal. 

She said it’s likely the court will hold “gatekeeping” hearings, under Colorado’s version of the Daubert standard, in which the judge decides whether scientific evidence, such as toxicology reports and digital forensics, is reliable enough to let the jury see it.

“Chain-of-custody documentation and lab accreditation standards here in Colorado,” she said, “will be scrutinized at every turn.”

Hyman also discussed how pretrial publicity might impact plea negotiations. Prosecutors, she suggested, often harden their stance to avoid appearing weak in the court of public opinion — even as defendants leverage the threat of venue changes or jury sequestration to force more favorable terms. 

“In situations like this,” she explained, “the real pressure point comes when both sides realize the jury pool may already be tainted by media coverage.”

Hyman said that as jury selection kicks off, voir dire must dig deeper and probe prospective jurors on how they consume news and their personal attitudes toward law enforcement. 

“You can’t assume someone who says they’re unbiased hasn’t seen a viral headline or formed an opinion,” she said.

Hollywood heir accused of beheading wife, in-laws dies before release of key evidence

Sam Haskell IV, the Hollywood scion accused of chopping up his wife and in-laws before tossing a disembodied torso into a dumpster, has died in a Los Angeles jail while awaiting trial, according to authorities.

Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman revealed in a statement that prosecutors had damning new evidence against him that was going to be made public at an upcoming preliminary hearing — including that he was having an affair with a 27-year-old woman and had been arrested with a bloodsoaked knife containing the DNA of all three victims.

Corrections officers found the 37-year-old dead from an apparent suicide in his cell Saturday, days before the hearing, where prosecutors were expected to outline the case against him. He previously pleaded not guilty.

“Instead of standing before a judge and answering for the crimes he’s been charged with, the defendant managed to escape justice,” Hochman said in a statement. “This is one last cruel act by someone who did the most horrific things for reasons we will never entirely know. A family that has been dealing with unimaginable loss now has been robbed of their chance to face him, hold him accountable for his barbaric actions, and openly share their grief and their cherished memories of their loved ones.”

Haskell’s attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment. He previously told Fox News Digital that the court’s assertion his client was at risk of self-harm was “wild speculation” and condemned a judge’s decision that forced him to appear shirtless or wear a protective vest at prior hearings.

Haskell, who opted to face the court without a shirt, was facing three counts of murder for the Nov. 6, 2023 slayings of his wife Mei Haskell, 37, her mother Yanxiang Wang, 64, and her stepfather Gaoshan Li, 71, as well as additional special circumstance allegations. He would have faced life in prison without parole if convicted.

“He was obviously an unhinged individual,” said Joshua Ritter, a former Los Angeles deputy district attorney and a Fox News contributor. “The crime itself speaks to his mental unrest. It’s not so uncommon that we see people commit murders based on financial or marital difficulties, but the idea of going as far as killing your in-laws and chopping their body parts up is very extreme.”

Hochman’s office released a summary of the evidence prosecutors planned to unseal at the hearing.

After killing and dismembering all three victims, he allegedly paid $500 to a group of day laborers he asked to remove a series of heavy black trash bags from the home, where they all lived together, according to prosecutors. After picking up the bags, one of the workers looked inside and saw human remains. The day laborers gave the money and the bags back to Haskell and called police.

Investigators previously said that by the time officers arrived at his house, Haskell and the bags were gone. Fox News Digital also reported that surveillance cameras at a gym in Encino showed him placing a heavy bag in the dumpster outside. A homeless man looking through the trash made the gruesome discovery and called 911.

Police found his wife’s car, which had her stepfather’s blood inside, Hochman’s office revealed Monday. They tracked Haskell to an Airbnb nearby, which investigators allege he had rented for himself and the children he shared with Mei Haskell after the murders.

When police arrested Haskell, he was carrying a pocket knife and a Home Depot receipt from a few days earlier listing plywood, a moisture barrier, coveralls and diamond saw blades, Hochman’s office said Monday.

In his rented SUV, he had a loaded .357 revolver, 32 rounds, a blood-covered knife, the family’s passports and a one-way ticket to Japan, according to authorities. They separately seized $67,000 cash during a search on his office.

DNA testing on the knife matched blood to all three victims, according to prosecutors.

“You do have to take into account the timing of all of this,” Ritter told Fox News Digital. “He’s been in prison for some time. I imagine he had opportunities for this kind of action before now. But it does seem interesting that it would come on the eve of a date that would expose all of the horrible things that he’d been up to.”

Police later recovered eight more bags containing bloody evidence, but not the remains of his in-laws — and they said that “large amounts of blood” had been cleaned up at the family home.

As for Haskell’s alleged 27-year-old mistress, authorities say she told them Haskell told her in October 2023, shortly before the murders, that his parents would be taking over care for his children. Then he invited her on a trip to Japan. In addition to the one-way ticket he had, prosecutors say he bought her a round-trip ticket.

“It’s interesting to me that, here’s a guy looking at life in prison without parole, multiple murders, it’s as bad as it’s going to get,” Ritter said. “There’s a strong likelihood that he will never see the outside of the prison again, but he is such a narcissist that he is more concerned with the embarrassment of perhaps his extramarital affair becoming exposed than he is with life in prison — if that is what motivated this.”

The remains of Mei Haskell’s parents have not been found.

Haskell’s parents, Hollywood producer Sam Haskell III and beauty queen and actress Mary Donnelly Haskell, are known for a series of Christmas movies. His father was also a former talent agent who represented George Clooney and Dolly Parton, among other A-list stars. He declined to comment.

Woman dies after falling at least 75 feet while hiking in North Carolina

A woman died over the weekend after falling at least 75 feet from a hiking trail while visiting a waterfall in North Carolina, according to officials.

Astrid Angelina Madrid Ticas, 29, was identified as the victim who fell on Sunday around 1:30 p.m. at Big Bradley Falls near Saluda, North Carolina, Polk County officials wrote in a news release Monday.

“As a community, Polk County extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Ms. Ticas during this difficult time,” the county said.

Authorities were called to the Big Bradley Falls Trailhead at Holbert Cove Road in Saluda, with crews from Saluda Fire and Rescue, Mill Spring Fire Department, Polk County Emergency Management and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office dispatched to the scene.

“Upon arrival, crews discovered that a mid-to late 20-year-old female had fallen an estimated 75 to 100 feet. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene,” the county wrote in an earlier release on Sunday.

Rescue personnel worked diligently to recover the victim, the county said, adding that it urges the public to exercise caution while visiting trails and natural areas.

It remains unclear how the woman fell.

Big Bradley Falls is a 75-foot waterfall located in a small gorge along Cove Creek near Saluda, according to the Blue Ridge Mountain Life website.

“Big Bradley Falls is a gorgeous waterfall that is difficult to reach, and somewhat dangerous to even view. The most popular trail to the base of the falls requires a hike down a steep trail, followed by a 20-foot rope descent down a cliff side,” the website said.

The incident on Sunday comes a week after another victim died at a different waterfall in the state. Yoseph Alabdulwahab, 25, drowned at the base of Steele Creek Falls in Pisgah National Forest, according to Burke County Emergency Services. Steele Creek Falls is about a 75-mile drive from Big Bradley Falls.

Rumors swirl about Nick Saban’s possible sideline return as coaches weigh in

The old adage goes: Where there is smoke, there is fire. And the metaphorical smoke billowed during the first day of SEC Media Days on Monday around college football legend Nick Saban.

Rumors about Saban returning to the sport he left more than a year ago ramped up.

Former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McElroy brought some of the rumors into the atmosphere during an interview on the “Mac and Cube” radio show in Birmingham.

“A very much in-the-know person that I have a lot of respect for and have spent a lot of time around and just really, really admire, they seem to think Nick Saban is not done coaching,” McElroy said. “He’s pretty adamant that he thinks Nick Saban will be coaching again.”

McElroy did say he believed, personally, Saban was finished during an appearance on ESPN.

“I’d be shocked (if he came back). … There are people connected to the sports world that think he’s not done. Now, interpret that however you will. People that would be somewhat knowledgeable about something like this, yes,” he said.

Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin said he believed Saban will be back on the sidelines — whether it’s in college football or the pros.

“He’s not going to need me to hire him,” Kiffin said, via the Clarion Ledger. “I don’t think he’s done. I think he’ll be back. Whether that’s college or NFL I think he’ll be back.”

LSU Tigers head coach Brina Kelly seemed to be all for Saban coming back to the sport.

“It’d be better for college football if Nick Saban is coaching,” he said, via On3 Sports. “Period. There’s nobody better to develop players and certainly build championship programs.”

Saban left Alabama after several national championships. He suggested the advent of name, image and likeness and the lawlessness of the transfer portal were the reasons why he stepped away from the sport.
