Chicago braces for collapse as NYC mayoral frontrunner pushes free programs

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson warns that finances in the nation’s third most populous city have “reached a point of no return.”

The mayor said this week that the city will need to take steps to deal with looming budget shortfalls and that key systems that Chicago provides, including education, housing, health care and transportation, are “woefully underfunded.”

Eight-hundred miles to the east, there are concerns in the nation’s most populous city that if democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani wins the election in November as New York City’s next mayor, the city could be headed for a fiscal abyss similar to the crisis half a century ago, when it came close to bankruptcy.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE WARNS ‘HALLOWEEN COMES EARLY ‘ AS CITY FACES SHORTFALLS

Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who dropped out of the 2025 race for New York City’s Democratic Party mayor nomination and who is running for re-election as an independent, struck a deal with the city council on a roughly $116 billion budget for fiscal year 2026.

“There are no perfect budgets. But we have come a long way, and this one gets pretty close,” City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams said at a press conference announcing the deal in late June.

CUOMO FLIPS SCIPT ON MAMDANI IN NEW YORK CITY MAYORAL RACE

But the 33-year-old Mamdani, who is the polling frontrunner over Adams, former New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and two other contenders in November’s general election, is running on an expensive platform to tackle affordability and inequality in one of the nation’s most expensive cities.

Mamdani grabbed national attention in late June after topping Cuomo and nine other candidates in the Democratic Party primary, as he took a big step towards becoming the first Muslim and first millennial mayor.

Mamdani, a Ugandan-born state assemblyman from the New York City borough of Queens, is proposing to eliminate fares to ride New York City’s vast bus system, making CUNY (City University of New York) “tuition-free,” freezing rents on municipal housing, offering “free childcare” for children up to age 5, and setting up government-run grocery stores.

There are concerns that the significant spending increases to pay for Mamdani’s proposals, along with the possibility of revenue shortfalls, could put a strain on New York City’s budget.

And at the center of Mamdani’s proposals to pay for his pricey plans is a “millionaire’s tax,” which critics say will spur ultra-wealthy New York City residents to flee.

Mamdani’s agenda has given Republicans plenty of fodder to use to go on offense, as they spotlight his “socialist” policies and try to anchor him to Democrats facing challenging re-elections next year. President Donald Trump has gone further, accusing Mamdani of being a “communist.”

And Mamdani’s rivals in November’s mayoral election are also taking aim at him.

Adams has said Mamdani is making “false promises” that will hurt low-income New Yorkers. And the mayor argues that Mamdani’s proposal to set up government-run supermarkets will “devastate the local bodegas and local stores.”

Cuomo on Friday took to social media to argue that “Chicago is proof that incompetent leadership can turn a deep-dish city into a half-baked mess.”

A day earlier, as he proposed his own plan to address affordability in New York City, Cuomo charged that Mandani is “proposing a theory of socialism that has never worked anywhere.”

“What is the best answer to affordability? It is business development. It is opportunity. It is jobs. It is economic growth. It is not anti-business socialism,” Cuomo said as he asked and answered his own question.

Firing back, Mamdani campaign spokesperson Dora Pekec claimed that “trusting Andrew Cuomo to address New York’s affordability crisis is the equivalent of tasking an arsonist with putting out a fire — he created this crisis.”

Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders threw two touchdown passes in his first NFL preseason game Friday night, shocking many fans after an unsteady start to his NFL career.

Sanders’ performance even caught the attention of NBA star LeBron James.

“That young (man) looking good out there,” James wrote. “Keep going UP!!! HEAD down on the grind and HEAD high to the most high.”

James later added another post, “And I don’t wanna hear that “It’s only preseason” bs. Cause if he was out there not going in y’all would be on his (butt) about it! So give credit and grace lames.”

Sanders’ father, Deion Sanders, celebrated his son’s successful first preseason game in multiple posts on X.

“Yes Lawd! Yes @ShedeurSanders,” Deion posted on X after the first touchdown.

AARON RODGERS OFFERS OLIVE BRANCH TO TERRY BRADSHAW AFTER LEGENDARY QB’S HARSH WORDS

After the second touchdown, the elder Sanders posted “oh yeah what now!” and “God is so good!”

The rookie got the start for the Browns’ first preseason game due to injuries to quarterbacks Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel despite a tumultuous first few months as a pro.

Sanders fell to the 144th pick in the NFL Draft this spring after scouts raised character concerns. He was previously considered a contender for the first overall pick but slipped past the first four rounds in one of the most shocking draft slides in NFL history, prompting confusion and debate by many NFL fans.

Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam even suggested while speaking to reporters last month that the team had no intention of drafting Sanders after the controversial quarterback shockingly fell out of the third round April 25.

“If you had told me Friday night [Day 2 of the NFL Draft], driving home, ‘Y’all are gonna pick Shedeur,’ I would have said, ‘That’s not happening,’” Haslam said Tuesday. “But we had a conversation early that morning [Day 3], and we had a conversation later that day, and we had the right people involved in that conversation.”

Sanders’ time with the Browns has already involved controversy after he was twice cited for speeding.

Sanders was first ticketed for allegedly driving 91 mph in a 65 mph zone. Two weeks later, he allegedly hit 101 mph in a 60 mph zone and failed to appear in court.

The rookie quarterback addressed those traffic tickets while appearing at teammate David Njoku’s charity softball game last month.

“I made some wrong choices personally, and I can own up to them,” Sanders said. “I made some, you know, not great choices … I learned.”

Browns general manager Andrew Berry criticized Sanders for the incidents last month.

“Not smart. Just not smart,” Berry told reporters this week about the tickets. “It’s something that we’ve addressed with him. Look, he understands the implications. He understands the consequences. It’s not just about yourself. It’s not just about having a joyride, but that you could injure other people. … A deer or something cuts in front of you, your reaction time, it’s just dangerous.”

After his impressive preseason debut, Sanders is the talk of the league.

Trump sets Alaska meeting with Putin as Ukraine peace hangs in balance

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet next Friday, August 15, for the first in-person meeting between leaders of the U.S. and Russia since Moscow launched its deadly 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The leaders are expected to meet in Alaska, Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

“The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska,” Trump wrote in his Friday evening post. “Further details to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The location of the meeting was a major point of interest after the summit was first floated following a call between Trump and Putin on Wednesday after White House envoy Steve Witkoff traveled to Moscow to meet with the Kremlin chief.

ZELENSKYY TELLS PUTIN TO ‘BE BRAVE’ AND FINALLY AGREE TO TRILATERAL MEETING WITH TRUMP

Hungary, Switzerland, Italy, and the UAE were all under consideration, with Putin originally favoring Hungary, according to sources familiar with the planning

The Kremlin chief also shot down the idea of meeting in Italy, according to reports on Friday, due to Rome’s perceived closeness with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Following the Wednesday Trump-Putin call, the U.S. president also spoke with Zelenskyy along with European leaders on the potential for a trilateral meeting.

Moscow – which has thus far refused to hold direct meetings with Putin and Zelenskyy – has not appeared likely to engage in a trilateral meeting any time soon, as the Kremlin’s foreign policy advisor noted on Wednesday that the potential for such a meeting was “mentioned” but “not discussed.”

TRUMP’S DEADLINE ON SECONDARY TARIFFS ARRIVES; US-RUSSIAN RELATIONS HANG IN THE BALANCE

Reporting later suggested that Putin may be open to meeting face to face with Zelenskyy, but only if certain “conditions” are met, though what these conditions are remains unclear.

Putin has allegedly suggested that Ukraine would need to formally cede the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, which Moscow illegally annexed in 2022, but which it does not have full control over.

Though Zelenskyy has countered similar territorial demands by noting that under Ukraine’s Constitution a national referendum would need to occur for any territorial concessions.

Despite the immense hurdles that remain, Trump appeared optimistic when speaking to reporters on Wednesday that “there’s a very good prospect that [Putin and Zelenskyy] will” meet.

Zelenskyy said at least one bilateral meeting between the U.S. and Russian leaders was suggested, which would potentially be followed by a meeting with Trump, Putin and Zelenskyy.

It remains unclear what the president hopes to definitively get out of meeting with Putin in person after expressing frustration with the Kremlin chief despite months of attempts to forge a ceasefire.

Trump wouldn’t comment on how likely he thought a peace deal between Moscow and Kyiv could be on the horizon and echoed his previous frustrations with Putin by telling reporters, “I’ve been disappointed before with this one.”

A police officer is dead, and the alleged gunman was killed, during a shooting Friday afternoon near the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) campus in Atlanta, as nearby Emory University told students to shelter in place and activated its emergency protocols.

The DeKalb County Police Department identified the slain officer as 33-year-old David Rose, who was a husband and father of three, including one on the way.

Just before 5 p.m. an unidentified man opened fire in front of the CDC campus, shooting multiple rounds into CDC buildings, according to Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum.

Responding officers arrived to find a DeKalb County sheriff’s deputy critically wounded at the scene, Schierbaum said. As they moved in, they heard additional gunfire coming from a nearby CVS pharmacy.

SHOOTING AT TENNESSEE CLASS REUNION LEAVES 4 HOSPITALIZED

Officers entered the store and found the shooter on the second floor, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The gunman, whose identity has not yet been released, was later pronounced dead. Schierbaum said it wasn’t clear if the wound came from authorities or if it was self-inflicted.

A shelter in place order was lifted at about 6:30 p.m. However, 92 children remained sheltered in a daycare on the CDC campus, according to officials.

“I want to commend the men and women of law enforcement from all across this region,” Schierbaum said. “When this community needed them, no one shirked from the danger. Every officer, from multiple districts, responded and immediately moved to end this threat.”

SEVERAL PEOPLE INJURED IN SHOOTING INCIDENT AT GEORGIA SHOPPING MALL: POLICE

CDC Director Susan Monarez said the agency was “heartbroken” over Friday’s deadly events.

“A courageous local law enforcement officer gave their life, and another was injured, after a gunman opened fire on at least four CDC buildings,” she said in a statement. “DeKalb County police, CDC security, and Emory University responded immediately and decisively, helping to prevent further harm to our staff and community.”

The CDC was coordinating with local, state and federal authorities in their investigation, she said.

On Wednesday, at least five soldiers were wounded after an Army sergeant who was recently arrested allegedly opened fire at Fort Stewart, near Savannah, Georgia.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp posted to X thanking law enforcement for their swift action.

“Twice this week, deranged criminals have targeted innocent Georgians. Each time, brave first responders rushed toward the danger to subdue the shooter and save lives, reminding us of just how crucial they are,” Kemp wrote.

“Marty, the girls, and I are thankful for all those who answer the call to serve and who protect their fellow Georgians,” he added. “We ask that you join us in holding them in our prayers, along with those harmed this evening near the CDC Center.”

ONE DEAD, ONE INJURED IN UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO CAMPUS SHOOTING AS MANHUNT CONTINUES

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens remarked about the number of mass shootings that have occurred across the country in recent years.

“Mass shootings, active shooter scenarios should not become the norm,” Dickens said. “We have a number of individuals in this country that have access to high-powered weapons. And for individuals with those high-powered weapons that may have mental challenges or those individuals with high-powered weapons that are angry when they choose to use those weapons in a way that harms multiple people.”

“We have to put an end to that in our society,” he added.

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr wrote in an X post that he was “horrified” by the violent attack.

“We’re horrified by the news out of Emory University and praying for the safety of the entire campus community,” Carr wrote in a post. “We stand ready to assist our law enforcement partners with whatever they may need.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) will lead the investigation. FBI Atlanta said it will offer assistance.

Rosie O’Donnell claims ABC’s review of ‘The View’ is first step toward cancellation

Liberal actress and comic Rosie O’Donnell predicted on Wednesday that ABC is going to cancel “The View” to appease President Donald Trump.

ABC has reportedly begun to scrutinize “The View,” one of the most prominent shows on television known for far-left rhetoric. The Daily Beast reported about an apparent rift between the hosts of the show and the top brass at the company, going all the way up to Disney CEO Bob Iger, concerning a desire for the hosts to cool off the politics.

O’Donnell, one of Trump’s most outspoken critics, wrote on TikTok, “You know what I just read today? ABC is ‘reviewing the liberal bias’ on The View. The VIEW. The show with five women speaking the own opinions – That’s the threat now. They say they’re not canceling it— they’re just ‘reviewing the bias.’ Which is code for – we’re gonna cancel it we’re just trying to soften you up first.”

‘THE VIEW’ HOST SUNNY HOSTIN WARNS COLBERT CANCELLATION COULD LEAD TO THE ‘DISMANTLING OF OUR CONSTITUTION’

“Apparently, the truth is dangerous now,” she continued. “They say they want ‘balance.’ But what they mean is silence. Silence anything that doesn’t praise the orange messiah and his golden escalator of lies.”

“This isn’t about bias – This is about obedience. This is about removing any program that doesn’t align with Trumpism — soft fascism in full lashes with commercial breaks,” she said, before appearing to paraphrase a famous poem about the Holocaust, “First they came for the journalists Then the educators Then the librarians Now, it’s Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg. It would be funny if it weren’t so terrifying.”

“We are in a dictatorship with good lighting,” O’Donnell added. “I used to think the First Amendment meant something. I used to think you couldn’t just erase a voice because it made you uncomfortable.”

O’Donnell went on to conclude that rather than getting quieter, women should “speak louder” and “take up space.”

“We stand together and say what is true, even when it shakes the walls. Because the most dangerous sound in the world is a woman who knows what she’s talking about— and refuses to stop,” she wrote.

Fox News Digital reached out to “The View” and ABC for comment.

“Rosie O’Donnell is an irrelevant loser with too much time on her hands, whining about a failing talk show while everyday Americans are working hard,” White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers wrote to Fox News Digital. “We can all thank Rosie O’Donnell for helping President Trump make America great again by self-deporting to Ireland.”

In July, Rogers called out “The Views” ratings and suggested it could be canceled after co-host Joy Behar went on an anti-Trump rant.

“Joy Behar is an irrelevant loser suffering from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome. It’s no surprise that ‘The View’s ratings hit an all-time low last year. She should self-reflect on her own jealousy of President Trump’s historic popularity before her show is the next to be pulled off-air,” Rogers said at the time.

CBS’ cancellation of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” last month started a flurry of speculation that networks are shutting down left-wing content to placate the Trump administration.

The cancellation followed the network and its parent company’s settlement with Trump after he sued both for “election interference” over a “60 Minutes” interview edit of his 2024 opponent, then-Vice President Kamala Harris.

Cincinnati viral beating bodycam released as suspects face new charges

CINCINNATI, OH: Police have released new body camera footage showing the moments officers responded to the viral downtown Cincinnati beating that left six people injured and led to six arrests.

In the footage in the immediate aftermath of the viral beatdown in downtown Cincinnati, officers are seen arriving at the scene at approximately 3:25 a.m. on Saturday, July 26.

Fox News Digital previously reported that a lone 911 call brought law enforcement to the scene.

“I’m 62 years old. I was attacked. I got attacked by multiple people,” a man in a polo green shirt is seen telling a Cincinnati Police Department officer.

“What led up to the fight?” the officer is heard asking.

“Don’t really know,” the man replied, sounding dazed. “It just got out of the bar and it just got crazy.”

“Okay, you didn’t get into it with anybody inside the bar?” the officer replied.

“No, no, no,” the man replied. “Not at all. I got side-punched. It wasn’t a fair fight at all.”

It wasn’t a fair fight at all…

— Witness, 62

In another officer’s body camera video, also obtained by Fox News Digital, a female Cincinnati Police Department officer is heard asking witnesses if the “argument was about wings.”

Throughout the footage, a group of individuals is seen purchasing and disputing wings at a local food truck in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 26.

“Are they fighting about wings?” the officer is heard asking as the officers arrive at the scene.

“I heard it was the one white guy who called the guy a n—–,” a man replied.

“Do you know who swung first?” the woman asked.

The update comes the same day all six individuals arrested in connection with the viral beating in downtown Cincinnati have been indicted by a grand jury and are facing additional charges.

Patrick Rosemond, 38, Jermaine Matthews, 39, Montianez Merriweather, 34, DeKyra Vernon, 24, Dominique Kittle, 37, and Aisha Devaughn, 25, are each charged with three counts of alleged felonious assault, three charges of assault and two charges of aggravated rioting, the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed to Fox News Digital.

“What I saw on video is not the Cincinnati I know and love,” Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich said. “These charges hold those involved in the attack accountable.”

The update comes nearly two weeks after a bystander video showing the brutal beatdown on the corner of Fourth and Elm streets went viral, sparking national outrage and forcing local leaders to answer for the beating that broke out around 3 a.m. on July 26.

Witness video obtained by Fox News Digital shows a man repeatedly yelling racial slurs at a group before being violently thrown to the ground and kicked repeatedly.

“I saw a little ruckus going on, saw people kind of scuffling, so kind of zoomed in, and once my phone kind of focused in, I saw the so-called victims being pretty aggressive toward the group of people that were already standing out there,” witness Jay Black told Fox News Digital.

CINCINNATI RESIDENTS ON EDGE AFTER VIRAL BEATDOWN SPARKS CRIME CONCERNS: ‘WHAT’S GONNA HAPPEN NEXT?’

Black added that he watched the man get knocked to the ground, before getting up and start fighting again.

“Once he got up, you know people were kind of backing off of him, but he was kind of still going at people, you know, and using racial slurs,” Black said.

He told Fox News Digital that “contrary to what people think,” there were actually “a lot of people” trying to break up the fight.

The fight ignited a national firestorm as local leaders were left to answer for the apparent lack of police presence in the downtown area when the fight occurred after it was revealed that only 11 officers were stationed downtown the night of the brawl.

In a press conference held last week, Cincinnati Police Chief Theresa Theetge revealed that, of the approximately 100 individuals present on the street corner at the time of the fight, only one person called 911.

“That is unacceptable to not call the police,” Theetge said. “Traffic was horrendous. People saw this. They were fighting in front of traffic. Why didn’t people call us?”

One of the victims in the attack, Holly, can be seen in additional footage being violently slammed to the ground and knocked unconscious as she tried to split up the fight.

“I remember being afraid, terrified,” Holly told Fox News Digital. “I just remember my life flashing before my eyes, and all I can think is, ‘Dear God, I hope my children know that I love them.’”

Holly revealed the horrific fight left her with brain damage and life-altering injuries, including a severe concussion.

Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval also weighed in on the violence that lit up social media at a press conference last week.

“This was an awful incident, and our law enforcement has been working quickly and effectively to bring all responsible to justice,” he said while standing alongside other city officials and leaders. “Let me be clear, there is no place for violent crime in Cincinnati, whether it’s a fight or gun violence. We will pursue those responsible and we will hold them accountable no matter who they are.”

However, Pureval has since come under fire for his handling of the city’s law enforcement, with mayoral challenger Cory Bowman, who is also Vice President JD Vance’s half-brother, slamming city leadership for what he believes is relaxed bail policies allowing violent offenders back on the streets.

“There are things from City Hall that are showing that the police are not supported the way they need to,” Bowman told Fox News Digital. “They are unable to do their jobs because they’ve been told time and time again that they have to use restraint in certain things instead of enforcing the law. They’re told to dial back, and then what happens is that we have prosecutors and judges that have a catch-and-release system.”

In a previous statement, Council Member Anna Albi also condemned the brutal beating, while vowing to support the community’s police force.

“Under no circumstances is it ever acceptable to condone such awful violence,” Albi said. “Our greatest responsibility as elected officials and city leaders is to ensure the safety of our community. That is why this City Council continues to invest in supporting and growing our police force while simultaneously investing in social services to foster safe and healthy communities.”

If convicted, the suspects face the possibility of 29.5 years in prison.

Late-night host slams ‘repulsive’ figures in his own party who ‘scare people’ away

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel admitted “repulsive” liberal voices are scaring people away from the Democratic Party during an appearance on the “Sarah Silverman Podcast” on Thursday.

The comedians discussed cancel culture persisting on the left since President Donald Trump returned to office. They criticized those who continue to shun Trump voters who are now expressing regret for supporting the president.

Silverman brought up how podcast host Joe Rogan has been attacked online for criticizing Trump’s second term after supporting him in the 2024 election. She called it “ironic” that the party of “inclusivity” was “incredibly elitist.”

Anti-Trump Kimmel, who campaigned for Democrats in the 2024 election, defended his party while agreeing that some progressive figures have turned people away.

TRUMP REPEATS CLAIM KIMMEL, FALLON ARE ‘NEXT’ AFTER STEPHEN COLBERT CANCELLATION

“Yes. But it’s not- it’s not the party. It’s not the majority. It’s the loud voices that scare people from saying what they believe and make you think twice about a joke or whatever,” he responded

“You know, a lot of their points are valid, but a lot of them are also just repulsive, in that they repel people,” Kimmel continued. “They go like, ‘Oh, you’re no fun. I don’t want to be around you.’ And I think that if you had to boil it down to one thing, that’s kind of what it is.”

In April, Kimmel blamed humorless liberal scolds trying to cancel comedians for Trump’s rise to power.

“I think a lot of the outrage is completely manufactured, and it’s like, a lot of these people who are angry aren’t really angry. I think these liberals who’ve done such a good job of viciously attacking comedians are a big part of the reason why Trump is the president right now,” he said.

After “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert’s show was canceled in July, Trump predicted this week that Kimmel and fellow late-night host Jimmy Fallon would be “next” to go off the air.

Norris was hurt with 14:50 to go trying to tackle Nathan Carter. There was no immediate report on the injury.

When play resumed, Falcons quarterback Emory Jones took a snap and then held the ball as players from both teams stood at the line of scrimmage and the clock continued to run. Finally, with 6:31 left, an official announced the game had been suspended “per New York.”
