U.S. Border Patrol agents had a strong presence outside an anti-Trump rally by California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom in Los Angeles on Thursday. The agents made at least one arrest.

Newsom, who is rumored to have presidential aspirations and has become one of the most outspoken critics of President Donald Trump, held the event, which he labeled “Liberation Day,” to announce plans to respond to the GOP’s redistricting push in Texas.

In a social media post shortly before the rally, Newsom predicted that “Donald Trump and [Texas Governor] Greg Abbott are going to have a very bad day today.”

Video taken by local affiliate Fox 11 and obtained by Fox News showed what appeared to be over a dozen armed and masked Border Patrol agents just outside the rally. The agents could be seen leading a man away in handcuffs as onlookers shouted angrily.

Speaking with Fox 11, Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino explained, “We’re here making Los Angeles a safer place.”

“Since we won’t have politicians who will do that, we do that ourselves. So, that’s why we’re here today. As you can see, already making it a safer place,” said Bovino.

The Border Patrol chief added, “We’re glad to be here, not going anywhere.”

Asked what his message to Newsom was, Bovino answered: “Again, we’re making Los Angeles a safer place, we’re going to continue to do that, and they can take that one to the bank and cash it.”

In response to the federal agents’ presence, Newsom’s office emailed Fox News Digital a statement in all-capital letters, “WE WILL NOT BE INTIMIDATED BY WEAK LITTLE DONALD TRUMP, THE CRIMINAL PRESIDENT!”

During the event, Newsom’s press team posted on X that “TRUMP’S PRIVATE ARMY IS ILLEGALLY ON PRIVATE PROPERTY!!!!”

During his remarks, Newsom acknowledged the federal agents, saying, “Right outside at this exact moment are dozens and dozens of ICE agents.”

“Do you think it’s coincidental?” he remarked. “Donald Trump and his minions, Tom Homan, tough guy. Decided, coincidentally or not, that this was a location to advance ICE arrests. Indiscriminate? Perhaps. we’ll find out later.”

“Wake up, America. this is a serious moment. Wake up to what’s going on. Wake up to the fear, anxiety. Wake up to what’s happening. Not just here in Los Angeles, where we saw our streets militarized, where we saw our due process rights thrown out the window,” he said. “That’s Trump’s America. That’s the moment we’re living in. So, these are sober times.”

Dem frontrunner in VA gubernatorial race declines CNN’s debate invite

Former Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., declined CNN’s invitation to hold a debate between herself and her GOP rival, Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, for the commonwealth’s gubernatorial race.

CNN had invited both candidates for a debate to be held in late September or early October. Only Earle-Sears accepted the invitation.

According to her campaign, Spanberger wants only local outlets to host debates rather than national ones like CNN.

“We have declined an offer to participate in a debate hosted by CNN in order to prioritize Virginia broadcasters and ensure the focus remains squarely on issues impacting Virginia,” Spanberger campaign manager Samson Signori said in a statement to CNN. “We believe that debates about Virginia’s future should be rooted in Virginia, produced by Virginia media, and accessible to Virginians across the Commonwealth — which is especially important after Winsome Earle-Sears declined a debate that featured three Virginia broadcast partners.”

VIRGINIA DEM GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE AND EX-CIA OFFICER TOOK $50K FROM CCP-LINKED TYCOON

Her campaign said it was in “active negotiations” with WAVY-TV and Northfolk State University to host a debate.

“Abigail Spanberger turning down a CNN debate is beyond absurd. It’s proof she’s terrified of facing voters in an unscripted setting,” Earle-Sears Press Secretary Peyton Vogel told Fox News Digital. “In 2022, she infamously pulled out at the last minute. Now she’s running from CNN, one of the friendliest stages she could ask for.”

“If she’s too afraid to show up there, what’s she hiding from? She can either step on that stage with Winsome Earle-Sears and defend her record or admit to Virginians that she can’t,” Vogel added.

TRUMP VOICES SUPPORT FOR GOP GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE, ADMITS SHE HAS ‘TOUGH RACE’

Polls have shown Spanberger maintaining a lead against Earle-Sears. The Decision Desk HQ’s average of polls has shown the former Democratic lawmaker with 45% support among Virginia voters, while the Republican is behind with 36%. Democrat Kamala Harris won the state by five points in the 2024 presidential contest.

In 2021, one debate rocked the Virginia gubernatorial race. Former Democratic Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe was pressed by then-Republican challenger and current Gov. Glenn Youngkin over his decision to veto a bill that would have allowed parents to be informed about materials provided in Virginia schools.

“I’m not going to allow parents to come into schools and actually take books out, make their own decision,” McAuliffe defended the veto. “Yeah, I stopped the bill that – I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.”

The exchange lit up social media with critics calling McAuliffe’s comment an “unforced error” and a costly gaffe.

Youngkin went on to triumph in the election, becoming the first Republican to win the Virginia governor’s mansion since 2009. He is ineligible to run in 2025 since state law prevents governors from serving consecutive terms.

The Department of Homeland Security debuted a fleet of newly branded Immigration and Customs Enforcement vehicles Thursday, one of the most visible public displays in the agency’s history.

“We will have our country back,” DHS’s official X post says.

The high-profile launch, captured in a professionally produced rollout video on DHS’s X account, comes as the federal government intensifies law enforcement operations in Washington, D.C., under President Donald Trump’s recent crime crackdown.

The agency has traditionally been more discreet in its policing, with agents dressed in plain street clothes to conduct enforcement.

OVER 100K AMERICANS RUSH TO JOIN TRUMP’S MASSIVE ICE HIRING SPREE NATIONWIDE, DHS SAYS

The video, viewed nearly 200,000 times within hours, features close-up shots of the new fleet as it travels through the nation’s capital, passing landmarks, including the Lincoln Memorial, the Capitol and the White House.

Dark navy SUVs and pickup trucks are outfitted with red and gold striping, large gold “ICE” lettering on the sides, and the slogan “Defend the Homeland.” On the rear, a gold-embossed “President Donald J. Trump” is prominently displayed.

The rap track “TOES” by DaBaby is featured prominently in the background, including the lyric, “My heart so cold I think I’m done with ice (Uh, brr).” The video was shared via X with a recruitment link to JOIN.ICE.GOV.

TRUMP ADMIN UNLEASHES CRUCIAL RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN WITH MASSIVE BONUSES TO BOLSTER ICE RANKS

According to ICE’s recruitment website, new officers are offered competitive salaries, paid federal holidays and a full federal benefits package that includes health, dental, vision and life insurance, a retirement plan and a Thrift Savings Plan similar to a 401(k). Additional incentives can include tuition reimbursement, transportation subsidies, telework options and access to fitness centers.

The fleet rollout coincides with a surge in visible federal policing in the nation’s capital. President Trump has temporarily assumed control of the D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department for 30 days. DHS says ICE, along with agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration, the FBI and the National Guard, are reinforcing MPD patrols and manning city checkpoints.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem’s office released a fact sheet showing the rollout reflects broader enforcement gains in her first 200 days, including a reported 93% decline in border encounters, a near halt to illegal migration through Panama’s Darién Gap and more than 100,000 job applications to ICE since the “Defend the Homeland” campaign began. The department has also reopened the Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement office and logged more than 352,000 arrests since January.

The House and Senate Homeland Security Committee Republican press offices did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment. The ICE union and agency spokespeople were also contacted.

Public reaction to the rollout video on DHS’s X account was largely positive Thursday, with replies from veterans, law enforcement families and other supporters. “

Ex-national security advisors under fire for suggesting military should oppose Trump

Social media users accused the New York Times of being in favor of a “military coup” after publishing a guest essay with the headline “We Used to Think the Military Would Stand Up to Trump. We Were Wrong.”

Former National Security Council members Steven Simon and Jonathan Stevenson wrote the essay on Wednesday in response to President Donald Trump deploying the National Guard to Washington, D.C., in an effort to combat crime. They remarked that this and other recent orders from Trump “registered no public objection” from top officers and warned that “in the context of domestic theaters,” the military can’t be politically neutral.

“Unfortunately, though we (and others) had hoped that the military would only respond to calls to action in American cities and states kicking and screaming, we no longer expect resistance from that institution,” they wrote. “Once, perhaps, traditionalist officers might have leaned on protocol and refused to heed a lawless order, taking inspiration from the generals — Mark Milley and James Mattis — who resisted the uprooting of established military standards in the first Trump term.”

NY TIMES REPORTER ADMITS TRUMP IS ‘WAY MORE EFFECTIVE’ IN SECOND TERM

The essay continued, “But today, general officers no longer seem to see themselves as guardians of the constitutional order. It now seems clear to us that the military will not rescue Americans from Mr. Trump’s misuse of the nation’s military capabilities.”

Commentators across X accused Simon and Stevenson and the New York Times of arguing in favor of a military uprising against Trump.

“The New York Times is pro-military coup against President Trump. What a flaming pile of trash in The Times, written by former Obama NSC officials Steven Simon and Jonathan Stevenson,” GOP commentator Steve Guest wrote.

Global trade analyst Kenneth Rapoza wrote, “NYT would absolutely support a military coup if the Democrats were in the white House. Spare me otherwise. They’d then berate you in how good and just it was. Their urban educated readers who went to NYU would disown you as friends and family for disagreeing, acting as the usual useful idiots they are in service of the regime.”

“By the way, this is the very definition of a coup — and it’s the exact opposite of the oath every member of the military swears to uphold,” former Byron Donalds staff member Javon A. Price commented.

“New York Times is really saying the quiet part out loud, huh?” EV Partners founder Robert Sterling joked.

“Buy guns and ammunition,” Townhall.com senior columnist Kurt Schlichter warned.

Pirate Wires editor-in-chief Mike Solana wrote, “every now and then the media screaming gets to me and I wonder… wait, should I really be worried? and then they do something wild like ask for a military coup in the pages of the new york times and I remember nope, lol, they’re everything they say they hate.”

“NYT hoping for a military coup in America,” columnist Karol Markowicz wrote with a screenshot of the headline.

TRUMP DECLARES CASE AGAINST CBS IS A ‘WINNER,’ HINTS AT ACTION AGAINST NEW YORK TIMES

In a statement to Fox News Digital, a NYT spokesperson defended the piece, saying it was “from two seasoned national security experts” and “thoroughly fact-checked prior to publication.”

“New York Times Opinion regularly publishes guest essays from a wide variety of writers with deep experience in their fields, and from across the political spectrum including the Trump administration,” the spokesperson said.

Simon also defended the essay, telling Fox News Digital that no one who read it could come to the conclusion that he was in favor of a military coup.

“As for actions, military leaders should give the president their best professional advice and decide for themselves whether they should resign if their advice is disregarded,” Simon said.

White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly criticized the article, calling it “dangerous rhetoric.”

“It’s highly concerning that the New York Times would print this dangerous rhetoric calling on our military to rise up against the duly-elected Commander in Chief, President Trump. The President was resoundingly elected to restore a focus on readiness and lethality at the DOD, and he is delivering on that promise,” Kelly told Fox News Digital.

According to the Wayback Machine, the article was also titled “How the Military Became Another Instrument of Trump’s Power.”

The New York Times editorial board previously wrote against Trump deploying the National Guard to Los Angeles with regard to the anti-ICE demonstrations in June. They argued that sending the troops was the “real emergency” in Los Angeles and creating “the very chaos it was purportedly designed to prevent.”

Mortgage rates fall to lowest level of 2025 as borrowers take advantage

Mortgage rates fell to the lowest level of the year this week, mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday.

Freddie Mac’s latest Primary Mortgage Market Survey, released Thursday, showed that the average rate on the benchmark 30-year fixed mortgage fell to 6.58% from last week’s reading of 6.63%.

The average rate on a 30-year loan was 6.49% a year ago.

“Mortgage rates fell to their lowest level since October,” said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s chief economist. “Purchase application activity is improving as borrowers take advantage of the decline in mortgage rates.”

TREASURY’S BESSENT SAYS FIXING HOUSING AFFORDABILITY CRISIS WILL BE ONE OF HIS ‘BIG PROJECTS’ THIS FALL

The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage on Oct. 24, 2024, was 6.54%.

Meanwhile, the average rate on the 15-year fixed mortgage fell to 5.71% from last week’s reading of 5.75%. One year ago, the rate on the 15-year fixed note averaged 5.66%.

The U.S. is still in the midst of a housing affordability crisis, that continues to deepen with high home prices and elevated interest rates reducing homebuying to its lowest level since the mid-1990s, according to the annual State of the Nation’s Housing report from the Joint Center for Housing Studies (JCHS) of Harvard University.

To exacerbate issues, homeowners and landlords are also facing higher insurance premiums and property taxes. The exorbitant rent has also left “more people than ever cost burdened, and has contributed to a sharp rise in homelessness,” according to the report.

HOUSING CRISIS DEEPENS AS 47 MAJOR METRO AREAS NOW REQUIRE HOMEBUYERS TO SPEND MORE THAN 30% OF INCOME

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Thursday that one of his top priorities is addressing the U.S. housing affordability crisis.

“We are really going to work on this housing affordability crisis. That’s one of my big projects for the fall,” Bessent told FOX Business’ Maria Bartiromo during an interview on “Mornings with Maria.”

Real estate transactions tend to peak from May through August, with June historically being the busiest month, according to housing industry experts. But during this summer season, activity has remained “sluggish” for existing homes and new ones, according to Realtor.com senior economist Joel Berner.

While some homebuyers who have been relegated to the sidelines by high financing costs got some encouragement last week, Berner said it may take a bit longer to get more of them back in the game.

‘The View’ host begs music legend to snub Trump’s Kennedy Center honor

“The View” co-host Ana Navarro pleaded with musical icon Gloria Gaynor Thursday to reject her upcoming Kennedy Center award because it will be bestowed by President Donald Trump.

In a post on Instagram, the political commentator shared how she once met the “I Will Survive” singer at a concert and Gaynor gifted Navarro a keychain that belted out her famous song.

“Let’s just say, during first Trump term, I pressed it til it ran out of batteries,” the anti-Trump commentator wrote. She then expressed her displeasure that Gaynor would be honored at an event hosted by the president.

“Yesterday, Trump announced he picked her to receive a Kennedy Center Honor, which he plans to host. Look, the woman is a goddess and deserves all the flowers that come her way. But I wish she wouldn’t accept an award from the hands of a man who has attacked the rights and history of women, people of color and LGBTQ,” she wrote.

‘I WILL SURVIVE’ SINGER GLORIA GAYNOR SAYS IT’S A ‘MISCONCEPTION’ SHE’S A FEMINIST

“The gay community, in particular, helped turn her signature song into an anthem. Trump is a stain on the prestige and significance of the KCH. Don’t do it, Gloria!” Navarro pleaded.

On Wednesday, Trump, the new Kennedy Center Chairman of the Board, announced the list of entertainers who will receive awards at the 48th annual Kennedy Center Honors in December.

Gaynor joins country legend George Strait, rock band KISS, Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone, and English actor Michael Crawford as the honorees this year.

A rep for Gaynor told Fox News Digital after the announcement Wednesday that she was “beyond blessed and honored to be receiving this award.”

TRUMP AND MELANIA TO HEADLINE POWER-PLAYER PACKED KENNEDY CENTER OPENING NIGHT

“My hope is that in accepting this honor, I can continue with the inspirational phenomenon that began with ‘I Will Survive.’ Sharing my music and art on a global level to provide encouragement, hope, empowerment, inspiration, understanding, and unity is the core of my purpose,” a rep for Gaynor shared with Fox News Digital after Trump’s announcement.

“I’ve always focused on a creative path that will help others and I hope that being awarded the Kennedy Center honor will help me continue this legacy.”

Gaynor’s team has not publicly addressed Navarro’s comments and did not return Fox News Digital‘s request for comment Thursday.

Trump will host the annual awards show after his overhaul of the Washington, D.C., performing arts center in February.

Shortly into his second term, Trump fired several Kennedy Center board members, including the president and Chairman of the Board, and replaced them with pro-Trump figures, who then named the president as chair.

KENNEDY CENTER DIRECTOR ENCOURAGES REPUBLICAN ATTENDANCE, SAYS ‘EVERYONE IS WELCOME’

In a February post on Truth Social announcing the changes, Trump vowed to make the performing arts center “great again,” by removing board members who did not share his administration’s “vision for a Golden Age in arts and culture.” Trump said that drag shows “targeting” children were one example of programming at the Kennedy Center that would end under his leadership.

His actions stirred backlash in the theater and film world, with multiple entertainers, including showrunner Shonda Rhimes, singer Renée Fleming, and actress Issa Rae, resigning from their roles at the Kennedy Center or canceling upcoming performances at the venue in protest.

What people who live to 100 years old have in common, according to science

Living to see 100 is a major feat that has a common thread.

Recent studies of centenarians – people who are in their 100s – have found that they suffer from fewer diseases overall, develop them more slowly and are less likely to experience fatal conditions compared to people who live shorter lives.

One 2024 study from Sweden, published in the journal GeroScience, considered historical data from people over 60 years old born between 1912 and 1922.

STUDY REVEALS WHY ‘SUPER AGERS’ MAINTAIN ‘OUTSTANDING MEMORY’ INTO THEIR 80S

Researchers followed these individuals from 1972 to 2022, considering the age of their death and also medical complications like stroke, myocardial infarction, hip fracture and various cancers.

Centenarians were found to have a lower age-specific lifetime risk for all conditions except hip fractures, which suggests that 100-year-olds are able to delay and avoid many major age-related diseases rather than surviving them.

The findings challenge the idea that a longer life span inevitably leads to higher disease rates, the researchers stated.

Another study in August 2025, conducted by the same researchers and published in The Lancet, looked into how older individuals accumulate and manage health conditions over a lifespan, instead of avoiding them.

AGING HITS A DRAMATIC TURNING POINT AT ONE SPECIFIC NUMBER, SCIENTISTS DISCOVER

The researchers tracked the health of participants born between 1920 and 1922, comparing the disease trajectories of centenarians to those who did not live as long.

Those 100 and older were found to have fewer diagnosed conditions and also accumulated diseases at a slower rate.

The researchers found that cardiovascular diseases were the most common diagnoses across all ages, but they contributed less to the overall disease burden among those who made it to 100.

Malignancies, like cancer cells that typically spread, were more largely present in centenarians, while neuropsychiatric conditions, such as anxiety disorders and dementia, were less common.

YOUR HEART MAY BE OLDER THAN YOU THINK — AND THE NUMBER COULD PREDICT DISEASE RISK

People in their 100s were also found to have fewer diseases occurring at the same time and were more likely to have conditions confined to a single disease group.

“Future research should aim to identify genetic, epigenetic and environmental factors underlying these patterns to inform early-life preventive strategies that promote longevity and resilience,” the researchers noted.

What sets centenarians apart

Dr. Macie P. Smith, a licensed social worker and gerontologist based in South Carolina, said it makes “complete sense” that people who avoid serious illnesses like stroke and heart disease live beyond 100 years old.

People who have reached 100 are considered “traditionalists,” who have typically avoided exposure to harmful elements such as radiation, additives, preservatives and artificial coloring in foods, Smith told Fox News Digital.

“They also were not exposed to an abundance of modern medicine,” she said. “They relied more on natural remedies and organic foods.”

Modern-day technology and global connections, which were not available to centenarians, could also contribute to stress and other mental health factors, according to Smith.

“They had the ability to mind their own business while reducing their stress levels,” she said. “That alone brings about longer life … When you mind other people’s business, you take on other people’s problems, thereby increasing stress levels. This is called vicarious trauma.”

Smith also believes the older generation is more “free-spirited.”

“They didn’t take on the restrictions that we take on today to look a certain way or be a certain way in public,” she said. “There was a lot less scrutiny back in those days.”

“Yes, they had their struggles that we don’t see today; however, they just showed up in a different way, and they were handled in a different way.”

Choosing your path when you’re younger will determine how you live when you’re older, Smith noted, whether it’s independently or dependently, or living on your own or in a community.

Making healthy lifestyle decisions early on can also significantly reduce the risk of complications in the future, which can impact longevity.

Smith recommends eating a low-fat, low-salt, brain-healthy diet and eliminating processed foods, while managing stress, engaging with family and friends, staying active and getting adequate sleep.

“This will prolong life and improve the quality of life,” she said.
