Detroit residents compare life under Trump’s new term to the prior Biden presidency

Detroit residents spoke with Fox News Digital this month about whether President Donald Trump or former President Joe Biden provided them a better life, and the results skewed toward the latter.

Not too far from Pontiac, Fox News Digital spoke with voters in the heart of downtown Detroit, the seat of deep-blue Wayne County that went heavily for Biden and Kamala Harris in 2020 and 2024.

Jayla, a graphic design intern currently in college, said that her life was better under Biden, who won Michigan narrowly in 2020 en route to ousting Trump from the White House.

“Biden, especially with being a Type 1 Diabetic. I think his medical plans have kind of served me for better, whereas on the other side, I’ve kind of been actually going through it as a college student,” Jayla said.

“Of course, Trump!” Ronald, a native of Detroit suburb Livonia, told Fox News Digital.

“Just take a look at the economy. I don’t want to go into the rest because you don’t want to be canceled,” Ronald said.

“I would say Biden,” said Joseph, a Detroit native and quality management professional. “Although people like to bring up the fact that things are so inflated, it also is due to the nature where we are currently as a society.”

Mary, an educator, was accompanying Joseph while walking through downtown Detroit. She said that her life was better under Biden because her student loans were forgiven.

“I had like six figures of student loans. So that definitely was a big help for me financially,” Mary said.

Josie, a Detroit native and social worker, raised concerns about Trump’s changes to Medicaid through The One Big Beautiful Bill Act he signed into law last month.

“Biden, with the cuts that are happening to Medicaid and all of that stuff, it’s making my work hard. It’s impacting our community negatively, and a lot of people are going to need increased resources and all that, and we’re having trouble finding even anybody, any social workers to do a job because there’s no money,” Josie said.

PJ, a clothing maker, said that his life was better under Biden.

“Biden by far. I’m not a fan of either of them. I have to go with Biden,” PJ said.

“A lot of these politicians, they don’t really care about us, so it’s kind of like, it’s the same thing under different people,” he added.

Trump improved significantly on his showing in Wayne County in 2024 from four years earlier, as he captured Michigan and won the presidency over Harris. While he still lost the county by nearly 29 points, it was a far better showing than the 38-point defeat he took there in 2020, and he was able to more than make up the ground needed in the rest of the state.

Police identify passengers killed in horror NY State Thruway tour bus rollover

A Columbia University student was among five people killed Friday when a tour bus returning from Niagara Falls rolled over on a rural stretch of Interstate 90 of the New York State Thruway in upstate New York, according to authorities.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Columbia University said it is mourning the death of Xie Hongzhuo, 22, of Beijing, China, who was a student in New York City.

“This heartbreaking loss is felt deeply across our community,” a spokesperson wrote in a statement. “We are in close contact with her family and offering them our full support. … Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with her family, friends, and all who have been touched by this tragedy.”

The university said it is providing counseling and other resources to students who may need them.

New York State Police identified the four other victims as: Shankar Kumar Jha, 65, of Madhu Bani, India; Pinki Changrani, 60, of East Brunswick, New Jersey; Zhang Xiaolan, 55, of Jersey City, New Jersey; and Jian Mingli, 56, of Jersey City, New Jersey.

The tour bus, operated by Staten Island-based tour company M&Y Tour Incorporated, was traveling eastbound from Niagara Falls to New York City on Friday when it lost control just before 12:30 p.m., crossed over the median and flipped on the shoulder in Pembroke, about 40 minutes from Buffalo, according to state police.

The driver, Bin Shao, 55, of Flushing, New York, had no signs of impairment and the tour bus had no signs of mechanical failure. Shao allegedly told police he was distracted at the time of the crash and over-corrected.

Erie County Medical Center on Saturday confirmed a total of 21 patients from the crash were treated at the hospital.

Of the 21 patients, seven were discharged, three patients are in the observation unit pending discharge, six patients were admitted in stable condition, and five patients remain in the trauma intensive care unit.

It is unclear if any additional victims were taken to other area hospitals.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) told Fox News Digital on Friday it was sending a go-team to investigate. The bus was taken to state police barracks as evidence.

The New York State Police, Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, Office of Homeland Security, NYS Thruway Authority, Erie County Emergency Management, Genesee County Emergency Management, Newstead Emergency Management, Genesee County District Attorney’s Office, National Traffic Safety Board, and numerous EMS and fire companies assisted in the incident.

Biden’s ‘lawfare’ against largest Christian university ends in major defeat

The largest Christian college in the United States has been cleared of federal allegations after university officials said the school was unjustly targeted by the Biden administration.

Grand Canyon University announced last week that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) voted unanimously to drop its lawsuit against the school. 

In 2023, the FTC under the Biden administration filed suit in federal court against GCU, its marketer Grand Canyon Education, Inc., and its president and CEO, Brian Mueller, claiming the defendants used deceptive advertising and engaged in illegal telemarketing. In addition to providing marketing services, Grand Canyon Education, Inc., provides recruiting and support services to the university. 

“This case, which we inherited from the previous administration, was filed nearly two years ago and has suffered losses in two motions to dismiss,” FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson said. “These losses are compounded by recent events: Grand Canyon secured a victory over the Department of Education in a related matter before the Ninth Circuit; the Department of Education rescinded a massive fine levied on related grounds; and the Internal Revenue Service confirmed that Grand Canyon University is properly claiming 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation designation.”

The Biden FTC previously complained that the Arizona-based school misled prospective doctoral students about the amount of time it would take to finish its accelerated program, deceptively marketed the school as a nonprofit, and illegally called prospective students who submitted their contact information on the school’s website but requested not to be contacted.

The Department of Education under the Biden administration denied GCU’s nonprofit recognition after it was approved by the Arizona Board for Private Postsecondary Education, the Internal Revenue Service, the State of Arizona, and the Higher Learning Commission.

Mueller said the FTC dropping the charges ends “years of coordinated lawfare by government officials under the Biden Administration against the largest Christian university in the country.”

Mueller praised current FTC officials for taking what he called an objective look at the case and recognized the numerous agencies and courts that have already ruled in GCU’s favor on the same allegations.

“As we have stated from the beginning, not only were these accusations false, but the opposite is true,” Mueller said. “We go above and beyond what is required in our disclosures and are recognized as a leader in this area.”

Mueller previously told Fox News Digital that he believes the university was being unfairly targeted by the Biden administration, saying multiple federal agencies were involved in a coordinated attack against the school.

“They threw everything they had at us for four years, and yet, despite every unjust accusation leveled against us, we have not only survived but have continued to thrive as a university,” Mueller said in a press release.

The charges dropped by the FTC come after the U.S. Department of Education rescinded a $37.7 million fine in May 2025 against Grand Canyon for alleged deceptive practices.

MSNBC host Jonathan Capehart almost lost his cool on Saturday when discussing the backlash against Cracker Barrel’s redesigned logo.

During an episode of MSNBC’s “The Weekend,” Capehart and co-host Eugene Daniels criticized those outraged over the restaurant’s recent logo redesign, arguing that the backlash is a waste of time and another excuse for MAGA supporters to play the victim. 

“There are real things people are concerned about, and they’re losing their minds over a redesign. What the — See? I’m trying not to curse,” Capehart told his co-host.

The Tennessee-based restaurant chain angered people on social media last week when it revealed its newly redesigned logo that, for many online critics, removed the charm from the original. 

The new logo does away with the illustration of an old man leaning against a barrel while seated in a chair. Instead, the text-only logo uses a new typeface against the familiar gold background.

In addition to the new logo and a new menu that includes breakfast, lunch and dinner options, the chain has also remodeled the interior of its restaurants, going for a cleaner, more minimalist theme that has done away with some of the country decor that has become synonymous with the brand.

Many people were furious with the redesign. Conservative commentator Benny Johnson posted that the logo change was “absolutely horrible,” and asked, “When will they learn?”

Right-wing influencer “End Wokeness” commented, “Cracker Barrel CEO Julie Masino should face charges for this crime against humanity.”

Rival franchise Steak ‘n Shake called out Cracker Barrel, stating, “Sometimes, people want to change things just to put their own personality on things. Hence, the elimination of the ‘old-timer’ from the signage. Heritage is what got Cracker Barrel this far, and now the CEO wants to just scrape it all away.”

Capehart voiced his opinion on the logo redesign, calling it fine and saying he’s “sick” of the outrage.

“The logo is fine. Companies go through rebrands all the time. You know what I’m sick of?”

“Manufactured BS?” Daniels asked.

“Yeah, manufactured BS, but I’m so sick of the outrage of these snowflakes. There are so many things that offend them, that get them all upset, they’re shooting beer cans and burning hats and stuff like that,” the co-host replied, referencing conservative-led boycotts, like the one against Bud Light for making a trans person one of the company’s spokespeople.

Daniels linked the outrage to MAGA supporters, stating, “I think the manufactured outrage is also about them pretending to feel attacked. Because when you think about Cracker Barrel, as someone who’s been a lot as a kid in the South, you think about folks in the south. You think about folks who are probably MAGA voters, right? Those two circles are probably very close together.”

However, Trump voters haven’t been the only ones speaking out against Cracker Barrel’s redesign.

The official X account for the Democratic Party shared a post Thursday that stated, “We think the Cracker Barrel rebrand sucks too.”

A representative for Cracker Barrel previously told Fox News Digital in a statement about the new logo that the company’s values had not changed.

“Our values haven’t changed, and the heart and soul of Cracker Barrel haven’t changed,” the company said. “And Uncle Herschel remains front and center in our restaurants and on our menu. He is the face of ‘The Herschel Way,’ the foundation of how our 70,000-plus employees provide the country hospitality for which we are known.

“Cracker Barrel has been a destination for comfort and community for more than half a century, and this fifth evolution of the brand’s logo, which works across digital platforms as well as billboards and roadside signs, is a call-back to the original and rooted even more in the iconic barrel shape and word mark that started it all back in 1969.”

Shedeur Sanders’ disastrous game sparks heated debate over conspiracy theories

Shedeur Sanders netted a negative amount of yards in his final preseason game as a rookie on Saturday, likely leaving him at the bottom of the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback depth chart.

The Cleveland Browns rookie came into the game in the third quarter and completed three of six passes for 14 yards, while taking five sacks for a combined loss of 41 yards against the LA Rams. Thus, he netted -27 yards for Cleveland, before being pulled from the game on the final drive and replaced by veteran Tyler Huntley. Huntley led the Browns offense on a game-winning field goal drive, as the Browns won 19-17.

It was a far cry from Sanders’ first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 8, when he threw for two touchdowns and was praised by fans and sports stars alike, including LeBron James and Dawn Staley. 

However, many fans and pundits were quick to defend Sanders for his rough outing on Saturday, and blamed the Browns’ coaching for putting Sanders in a position where he had to rely on backup teammates, while also calling questionable plays. 

Former NFL quarterback Derek Carr questioned why Sanders wasn’t left in the game to finish the final drive. 

“I need to understand why we don’t get to see Shedeur Sanders run this 2 minute drill? Wouldn’t you want to see your young QB operate in this situation? Get him more reps for the future? I didn’t see the whole game so maybe he already showed enough? Help me understand this…” Carr wrote on X. 

Sanders himself even told reporters after the game that he didn’t think he wouldn’t be allowed to stay in the game to finish the final drive. 

“I didn’t know I was out,” Sanders said. “I was powering up for that two-minute drive, because that’s just the situation that every quarterback dreams for.”

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski was asked why Sanders was pulled for the final drive.

“Obviously, we didn’t play great as an offense in the second half and that’s not on one person, so we could be better in a bunch of areas. I just felt like we wanted to get [Huntley] in on that drive,” Stefanski said. 

Sports talk show host Skip Bayless posted a 16-minute rant in defense of Sanders on X, while condemning the Browns for their handling of the quarterback. 

“They sabotaged it, they rigged it against him today, putting him in with third and fourth-stringers, fifth-stringers, you got no shot at quarterback,” Bayless said. 

Other users on social media leveled similar criticisms at the Browns, with some speculating that the obstacles being put in front of the quarterback are intentional. 

One user wrote, “I hope Shedeur Sanders will eventually end up on a good roster with a coach who wants and BELIEVES in him. It’s so obvious this league, and even the Browns in a sense, have been trying to send a message to him since the draft & it’s downright disgusting.” 

“So Kevin Stefanski gives Dillon Gabriel easy, short routes with max protection. And then gives Shedeur Sanders bulls— plays with an OL that looks like they just ate a gang of Little Debbie’s,” one user wrote. 

Another user wrote, “The Cleveland Browns have Shedeur Sanders operating out of tight wide receiver formations. But with Dillion Gabriel they spread out the receivers.”

Another user wrote, “[I don’t know] why the browns drafted Shedeur Sanders. It’s clear as day they aren’t giving him the same plays as Dillion and on top of that they got him out there with folks who finna be working in warehouses next week. It feels like a set up smh- how is that a fair evaluation?” 

However, many other fans on social media put the blame on Sanders, and defended the Browns for how they have handled the young quarterback.

Sports talk show host Jason Whitlock was one figure to hold Sanders accountable. 

Other users echoed similar sentiments. 

“The Browns are not setting Shedeur up to fail. The play calling matches the strengths of the roster. Gabriel reads quicker and executed cleaner today. Sanders had a rough outing, but not every rookie misstep is a Cleveland indictment. Sometimes a bad day is just a bad day,” one user wrote. 

Another user wrote, “The Shedeur army is full of insane 20-year-olds who think everything is a conspiracy. Taking bad sacks is not a conspiracy. Choosing to run out of bounds for a four-yard loss instead of just tossing it out of bounds isn’t a conspiracy.” 

Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson stoked the conspiracy theories related to Sanders in a recent interview, claiming that NFL teams were “told not to” draft Sanders to “make an example” of the quarterback when he fell to the fifth round of the NFL Draft in April. 

“I tell you this much, what I heard from someone that’s in the NFL [is] that the NFL told [teams] ‘don’t draft him, do not draft him,'” Dickerson said in an interview on the “Roggin and Rodney” show on AM 570 LA Sports on Thursday. 

“‘We’re going to make an example out of him.’ And this came from a very good source, a very good source. They were going to have him not get drafted to basically show you ‘this is what happens when you do this.’ I mean, look, the NFL’s got all kinds of power. They do all kinds of stuff.” 

Sanders’ slide out of the first round shocked many, including President Trump, who sent a post on Truth Social condemning the league’s owners for passing on the quarterback. 

“What is wrong with NFL owners, are they STUPID? Deion Sanders was a great college football player, and was even greater in the NFL. He’s also a very good coach, streetwise and smart! Therefore, Shedeur, his quarterback son, has PHENOMENAL GENES, and is all set for Greatness,” Trump wrote. “He should be “picked” IMMEDIATELY by a team that wants to WIN. Good luck Shedeur, and say hello to your wonderful father!”

ESPN host Stephen A. Smith revealed a text message from an associate who compared the situation to Colin Kaepernick being out of the NFL since 2016, suggesting “collusion.” 

“‘This is a bad look for the NFL. This feels like Kaepernick-level collusion,'” Smith said of the content of the text, adding the situation goes beyond “talent evaluation.” 

“All the hard work the NFL League Office puts in to eradicate these kinds of perceptions, only to turn around and watch as the OWNERS look like they’re colluding, messing up everything. What has been done to Shedeur will outshine everything else in this draft. We’ll never believe this is about just talent evaluation again.”

Sanders was eventually taken by the Browns on the third and final day of the draft with the 144th pick. The quarterback was initially considered a possible contender for the first overall pick early in the draft process after finishing his final season at Colorado. 

But now, Sanders appears primed to begin his NFL career low on the depth chart, as he is currently listed as the fourth quarterback on Cleveland’s roster. 

Still, Sanders appeared confident about his future with the Browns. When reporters asked him if he expects to make the team’s roster after final cuts on Saturday, the quarterback responded “obviously.” 

Top UK official gets official warning after fishing trip with JD Vance

Britain’s top diplomat found himself in some hot water recently after he went fishing with U.S. Vice President JD Vance – but it wasn’t over anything the politicians discussed. 

U.K. Foreign Secretary David Lammy was given a written warning by the country’s Environment Agency for fishing without a license, the agency said Friday. 

Lammy had invited Vance and his family to his country estate south of London, where the pair had a photo op at a nearby river. 

The pair also held a bilateral meeting during the visit to discuss international issues.

Lammy belatedly purchased a fishing license and reported himself to the agency, with a spokesperson calling the incident an “administrative error.”

Lammy previously told reporters that Vance gave him “Kentucky-style” fishing tips, but it still didn’t help him catch anything. 

“The one strain on the special relationship is that all of my kids caught fish, but the foreign secretary did not,” Vance joked at the time.

New study shows colonoscopy cancer detection drops significantly after AI exposure

The benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) in the medical space are ever-growing, but evidence suggests it can also come with risks.

A new study by European researchers investigated how AI can change the behavior of endoscopists when conducting a colonoscopy, and how their performance dips when not using AI.

The research followed clinicians at four endoscopy centers in Poland participating in the ACCEPT (Artificial Intelligence in Colonoscopy for Cancer Prevention) trial, where AI tools for polyp detection were introduced at the end of 2021.

FDA APPROVES FIRST AI TOOL TO PREDICT BREAST CANCER RISK

Colonoscopies at these centers were randomly selected to be administered with or without AI assistance.

The researchers gauged the quality of the colonoscopies by comparing the identification of tumors (also known as the adenoma detection rate, or ADR) three months before and three months after implementing the AI.

From September 2021 to March 2022, 1,443 patients underwent non-AI-assisted colonoscopies before and after the introduction of AI.

The study found that the tumor detection rate decreased “significantly,” going from 28.4% before AI exposure to 22.4% after AI exposure.

The findings were published in the journal Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Per the researchers’ analysis, exposure to AI, patient gender and age were “independent factors” associated with the tumor identification rate.

The researchers concluded that “continuous exposure to AI might reduce the ADR of standard non-AI-assisted colonoscopy, suggesting a negative effect on endoscopist behavior.”

Harvey Castro, M.D., an emergency physician and specialist in AI and healthcare based in Texas, said he considers this study an “important piece of work.”

“This study highlights a paradox in medicine: Artificial intelligence can help us detect cancer, but it may also weaken the doctor’s own ability to see what matters when the tool is not available,” he said in an interview with Fox News Digital.

Castro emphasized that even a 1% change can affect colon cancer survival for “thousands of patients,” which makes the 6% drop in detection rates significant.

“Even small changes in adenoma detection can shift cancer outcomes,” he said. “A reduction of a few percentage points is meaningful at a population level.”

The expert recommends integrating AI “wisely” instead of avoiding it all together.

“As a physician futurist, I believe artificial intelligence is one of the most powerful tools we have for improving detection and saving lives,” Castro said. 

“At the same time, this study reminds us of a simple truth: Medicine is still a human profession. The doctor’s eye, judgment and pattern recognition remain irreplaceable.”

Castro commented that the right path forward with AI in medicine is balance, designing it to strengthen clinicians instead of weakening.

“That requires training, oversight and intentional design,” he said. 

“The best future is one where technology and humanity work side-by-side, doctor plus machine, ensuring patients get the safest and most effective care possible.”

McQuarrie joked, “And you improvised that, thank you very much. I appreciate that. You were like, ‘I think we’re gonna need that,’ and I was like, ‘I didn’t ask you to do that.’”

Cruise’s comments come after he vowed to continue working on action films for the rest of his career. 

In May, Cruise revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he does not see himself ever taking a step back from starring in action movies. 

He previously told the outlet that he wanted to keep making “Mission: Impossible” movies until he is in his 80s, like how Harrison Ford continued making “Indiana Jones” movies at the same age. 

“I actually said I’m going to make movies into my 80s; actually, I’m going to make them into my 100s,” the 62-year-old said at the “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” premiere at the time.

“I will never stop. I will never stop doing action, I will never stop doing drama, comedy films — I’m excited.”

The latest film is pegged as the final installment in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, with Cruise confirming this will be his last time portraying the fictional IMF agent Hunt.

“It’s the final! It’s not called ‘final’ for nothing,” said Cruise.

Cruise first appeared on-screen as Hunt in 1996, reprising the role in seven additional films, with “Final Reckoning” being the last one.

Postal services across Europe suspend packages to US over new customs rules

Postal services in Europe and around the world plan to halt shipping merchandise to the U.S. as the Trump administration’s end of the de minimus tariff exemption goes into effect. 

The “de minimus” exemption allowed internation carriers to ship goods valued under $800 to the U.S. without paying any duties.

The White House announced the end of the exemption weeks ago, linking it to fentanyl and other illicit drugs coming into the U.S.

DHL, Europe’s largest shipping provider, said in a statement on its website Friday that “Deutsche Post and DHL Parcel Germany will no longer be able to accept and transport parcels and postal items containing goods from business customers destined for the U.S.” effective immediately.

The end of the exemption goes into effect Aug. 29. 

DHL said its restrictions on packages would be temporary, explaining they were necessary because of “new processes required by U.S. authorities for postal shipping, which differ from the previously applicable regulations.”

The company continued, “Key questions remain unresolved, particularly regarding how and by whom customs duties will be collected in the future, what additional data will be required, and how the data transmission to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection will be carried out.”

Postal services in Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Austria, France and Belgium have similarly said they plan to pause shipments to the U.S. 

The U.K.’s Royal Mail has also temporarily paused shipments, according to the BBC. 

Outside of Europe, Asian countries like Singapore and Thailand said their countries would also hold on shipments until there’s more clarity on the new rules.

“The halt underscores the sweeping disruption caused by President Trump’s decision to eliminate the de minimis threshold, which previously allowed low-value parcels to enter the US without customs duties,” Thailand Post said in a statement on its website. “The exemption, capped at US$800 per person per day, facilitated millions of small packages from around the world entering the US smoothly.”

Australia Post said it has paused transit on a handful of packages from other countries bound for the U.S. 

“We have been working hard with US authorities and international partners to adapt our services to meet the new US de minimis requirements so UK consumers and businesses can continue to use our services when they come into effect,” the Royal Mail said.

The U.S. ended the de minimus exemption for China in May.

The White House said at the time that many Chinese-based shippers hide illicit substances, including synthetic opioids, in low-value packages to exploit the de minimis exemption.  

The administration said that the amount of de minimus shipments coming into the U.S. has increased from 134 million to 1.34 billion between 2-15 and 2024, according to the Financial Times.

It has also helped Chinese-based fast fashion companies like Temu and Shein, which ship directly to customers.
