Husband shot and killed wife who tried to leave him after chasing her to pub

A woman was shot and killed by her husband outside a pub on Valentine’s Day after trying to flee the relationship, an inquest heard.

Lisa Smith, 43, was shot twice in the neck in the car park of The Three Horseshoes on Main Road in Knockholt, Kent, on February 14 this year.

She had told her sister she was leaving her husband Edward Smith earlier that day, and had got on a train from their home in Slough, to stay with family in Kent.

He tracked her down at the Three Horseshoes pub that evening before blocking their car with his and firing four shots with a handgun, Kent and Medway Coroner’s Court heard.

On Wednesday, Area Coroner Katrina Hepburn concluded Ms Smith died from unlawful killing and found “requisite intent from Edward Smith to kill her or cause her really serious harm”.

After killing his wife, Mr Smith, also known as Edvard Stockings, sent voice notes to someone he called “Nana” saying “I’ve shot Lisa she’s dead” before he was seen to jump to his death from the Queen Elizabeth II bridge in Dartford later that evening, the court heard.

In one of the voice notes he said “hopefully I’m going to get into heaven with my wife” after alluding to suicide.

Detective Sergeant James Dolby told the court that Ms Smith was picked up at Orpington station by her friends and sister shortly before they went to the Horseshoe Pub.

Just before 7pm, Ms Smith was in the passenger seat of her friend Nancy’s Seat in the pub car park when her husband arrived, having called her and her friends multiple times while looking for her.

There was a “verbal altercation” between him and Ms Smith’s sister Laura who called him a “narcissist” inside the pub, he got back in his car and left.

Mr Dolby said: “At 18.59 Nancy reverses her Seat onto Harrow Road and stops to speak with Laura.

“Edward manoeuvres his vehicle to stop Nancy from exiting … Effectively Edward has blocked them in.”

The first two shots from his handgun were fired from inside his own vehicle, the court heard.

The coroner said: “He pulled forward in the car and fired a second shot, he was seen to exit the vehicle with arms outstretched holding a handgun and firing a shot through the drivers side car window.”

It was this third shot that caused “fatal damage” to Ms Smith’s neck, before he came around to the passenger side and fired at her again from close range.

“Four shots were fired, the first two from within his vehicle towards the Seat.

“There were no injuries consistent with the trajectory of those first two bullets,” said Ms Hepburn.

On Wednesday morning, Ms Smith’s father asked the detective why they had not driven away after the first two shots.

“You’d have started up and gone, wouldn’t you?” he asked.

“It happened very quickly,” Mr Dolby explained.

Despite CPR from members of the public and emergency services, Ms Smith died from her injuries at 19.42.

Setting out her conclusion, the coroner said: “I am satisfied on the balance of probabilities that a short form conclusion of unlawful killing would be safe and appropriate to set out in this manner.

“There was intent to find Lisa Smith after she had left her home address and once she was found the car she was seated in was blocked preventing any exit.”

An inquest into the death of Edward Smith will take place this afternoon.

Forgotten Scottish castle thought to have been home to kings is uncovered

A forgotten royal castle that is believed to have once been home to kings who ruled parts of Scotland has been discovered in a major archaeological project.

In a recently released book, archaeologists reveal the existence of a castle at Finlaggan, on the isle of Islay, which is unnamed and previously unknown from the 12th and 13th centuries.

Archaeologists have spent nearly 30 years analysing research that was undertaken at the historical site on Islay from 1989 to 1998.

The research, which reveals the site was at the centre of importance in the early medieval period, has been published in the Archaeology of Finlaggan, Islay.

The castle occupied two islands in Loch Finlaggan, and it is thought to be the area in which the MacDonald Lords of the Isles inaugurated kings or lords.

One island was home to a large stone tower, which was said to be living quarters and security for the king or lord. On the other island, there once sat a courtyard which contained kitchens, a chapel with a burial ground, houses, and a great hall where feasting took place.

Large rectangular stone towers were essentially exclusive to great Anglo-French lords and Kings, and can be taken as a political statement and a sign of wealth and ruling class connections, the researchers said.

The excavations of the site also revealed evidence of prehistoric occupation, lead mining and post-medieval settlement.

Dr David Caldwell, the author of the book, said: “I am privileged to have led a skilled and dedicated team of specialists and volunteers on such an important project in a key place of national significance.

“The processing of all the data that was gathered has been a major part of my life since the 1990s, and I hope I have not only provided an account of interest but also a basis for others to carry out more research in the future.”

The book was published by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, a charity that was founded in 1780 to investigate natural and civil history.

Dr Helen Spencer, the head of research at the charity, said: “As a charity, part of our mission is to share knowledge of the past with everyone, which is why we are especially grateful to our thousands of Fellows across the globe.”

Nigel Farage welcomes first Labour defector to Reform UK

Nigel Farage has secured his first Labour defector as a borough councillor became the first to abandon Sir Keir Starmer’s party for Reform UK.

In a significant shift, Mason Humberstone became the first Labour politician to jump ship to the insurgent right-wing party.

His defection follows a series of Labour councillors joining the Green Party or switching to a pro-Gaza independent ticket. And it follows a slew of former and current Tory MPs and councillors joining Mr Farage’s ranks.

Labour has so far brushed off its own left-wing defections as well as mocking Reform for accepting so many of what its MPs consider to be failed former Tories.

But the first defection of an elected Labour representative to the party will spark fears that there are more to come.

Mr Humberstone was elected to represent Old Town ward in Stevenage in May 2023, and is now the only Reform member sitting on the Labour-run authority.

His defection will also cause concern at Labour HQ given that the demographic known informally as “Stevenage Woman” – a socially conservative, non-radical female voter who has backed the Conservatives in the past – has previously been one of the key cohorts the party has chased in its efforts to build a broad electoral coalition.

Announcing his defection on Wednesday, Mr Humberstone said the party he previously supported was “lost, without vision” and “mired in scandal”.

Labour’s Stevenage MP Kevin Bonavia said he was “deeply disappointed” in the move, while council leader Richard Henry accused Mr Humberstone of “jumping ship for personal and political gain” and called for a by-election.

Explaining his decision, the councillor said: “I’ve battled with this decision for some time. But deep down, I know it’s the right call.

“It isn’t ordinary, hardworking people in Stevenage and across our country who’ve left Labour – Labour has left us. The party I joined is lost, without vision, mired in scandal, and too often speaking for a metropolitan elite rather than the people they’re meant to serve.”

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said the move showed his party was “winning the support of young people from across the political landscape”.

It follows the defections this week of former health minister Maria Caulfield and the sitting Conservative MP and shadow minister Danny Kruger.

Mr Bonavia, who was elected the MP for Stevenage in 2024, said: “I am deeply disappointed in Cllr Humberstone for defecting to another party who thrive on fear and division and have no practical solutions for our country’s future.”

He urged Mr Humberstone to “do the right thing” and resign to seek a fresh mandate in a new election, adding: “I will not be distracted by political opportunism as I continue to focus on working day and night to secure positive changes for our town and villages as our local MP.”

Council leader Mr Henry said: “I made every attempt, above and beyond what would be considered reasonable, to accommodate and mentor Cllr Humberstone as he brought many challenges to the table in terms of his attendance, punctuality, adherence to commitments, dedication to the role and much more.”

He said Mr Humberstone had “jumped ship with no fair warning for personal and political gain” after being given “so many chances and opportunities to improve his conduct”, and that he should face a by-election.

In the last year, Mr Humberstone has been to 10 of the 33 council and committee meetings he was expected to attend.

A local Labour source said: “Mason showed a lot of promise and potential when he joined the Labour Party, but the reality is he fell extremely below the mark.”

He is the first sitting Labour councillor in England to switch to Mr Farage’s party, following former Scottish Labour councillor Jamie McGuire’s move earlier this year.

Mr Farage said: “I am delighted Cllr Mason Humberstone has joined us from Labour. He is putting country before party and we warmly welcome him to Reform.

“We are winning the support of young people from across the political landscape.”

Heiress, 28, found dead in London flat ‘after insect bite’

A Greek heiress who recently beat cancer has died from an insect bite in London, her mother has claimed.

Marissa Laimou was found lifeless in her bed at her apartment in the capital last Thursday. The 28-year-old had been discharged from hospital with a diagnosis of an insect bite just the day before, her mother Bessie claims.

Doctors had reportedly said she didn’t need to be admitted, and sent her home with antibiotics.

Laimou, who is part of the Laimos family of ship owners, had been suffering from dizziness, itching and a fever, her family said.

Her mother said: “She was bitten by an insect, she was itchy, she went to the doctor, she took antibiotics, she ate, she slept and she never woke up. My daughter was saved from cancer. My little child.”

She added: “She was a girl with so many gifts. All of England is crying, all her doctors too.”

The hospital from which Laimou was sent home has reportedly opened an internal investigation over the incident. Meanwhile, a post-mortem is due to be carried out in the coming days.

Marissa’s great-aunt Chrysanthi told Parapolitika: “The entire family is shocked by the sudden death of the daughter of Diamantis and Bessie Laimou. She was a very kind girl, quiet, educated, cultured, modest and simple. She loved art and theatre, she was involved in theatre. Warm condolences to the family! Strength and courage!”

In February, Laimou played a leading role in a production of Romeo and Juliet in London, and she was preparing another theatre project. As part of her involvement in the fashion industry, she founded Rainbow Wave, which introduces international brands to London stores.

Melania and Kate’s bold fashion choices for historic Trump state visit

First Lady Melania Trump and Princess Kate are set to make history with their first joint outing together.

Prince William and Kate greeted U.S. President Donald Trump and the First Lady as they disembarked Marine One after landing in the grounds of the Windsor estate Wednesday, before they were taken to meet the King and Queen.

Kate was dressed in a bold, burgundy Emilia Wickstead dress, a matching hat by Jane Taylor and a feather brooch. Kate’s hat, in luxury felt with a satin bow and veiling, retails for £2,330 and is made to measure.

Meanwhile, Melania wore a Christian Dior Haute Couture dark grey suit with a wide-brimmed purple hat that obscured her eyes.

Later, the two women will visit Frogmore Gardens together as part of the president’s second state visit, marking their first solo outing without their respective spouses.

Melania and Kate will meet U.K. Scoutmaster Dwayne Fields and members of the Scouts’ Squirrels program. A former Scout herself, Kate has been co-president of the Scout Association since 2020.

Ahead of their historic outing, Melania and Camilla joined their respective spouses for the Beating Retreat military ceremony. Camilla opted for a royal blue dress and matching hat, along with three strands of pearls. Her handbag matched her shoes, and she wore a gold brooch.

The Trumps stayed overnight Tuesday at the U.S. ambassador’s residence in London before traveling Wednesday to Windsor Castle for a ceremonial welcome and a lavish state banquet.

Melania’s itinerary for the short visit also includes an outing with Camilla. Together, the two will visit Queen Mary’s Dollhouse and the Royal Library at Windsor Castle.

The trip carries extra significance as the late Queen Elizabeth previously hosted the Trumps for a state visit during his first term. Trump is now the first elected political leader in modern history to be invited to two state visits by monarchs.

Crowds have turned out to support the US president in the Berkshire town, with Dianne, 52, from north London, telling The Independent she thinks Trump is a “special man.”

However, thousands are set to demonstrate against Trump’s stay on the streets of London later.

The US president’s visit is under tight security, with four arrests made near Windsor after pictures of Trump and the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein were projected onto the castle.

Wednesday will see the president and first lady Melania Trump treated to a military parade — described by the MoD as the largest guard of honour ever at a state visit — as well as gun salutes, a joint U.S.-U.K. flypast, a carriage procession, and a lavish state banquet.

Meanwhile, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to use the visit to bolster the “special relationship.”

Once-a-day pill can help people lose ‘significant’ weight

A once-a-day pill for obesity could be a cheaper and more accessible weight-loss drug, after a study found the tablet can lead to “significant” reductions in body weight.

More than 60 per cent of adults living in the UK are obese or overweight – a crisis which is costing the NHS about £107bn a year.

But almost one in five people taking the drug Orforglipron lost 20 per cent of their body weight after using it for a year and a half, researchers found.

Although the weight loss seen in people taking the tablet is not as stark as that among patients taking Mounjaro, experts believe the tablet will be more accessible and convenient compared with weight-loss injections.

“Because this pill is easier to use and may be less expensive, it could allow more people access to effective weight-loss medications and make obesity treatment simpler and more convenient for patients everywhere,” said Dr Stephen Lawrence, GP and associate clinical professor at the University of Warwick.

About 1.5 million people in the UK take drugs such as Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy to deal with conditions such as obesity and diabetes.

The medications, known as GLP-1 agonists, predominantly treat diabetes but are also available on the NHS or via private providers to help adults with a high body mass index. The drugs are mainly used to control blood sugar levels, but they also reduce food cravings and, as a result, can cause rapid weight loss.

The Orforglipron pill is also a GLP-1 agonist made by pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly.

A snapshot of the results was published by the company in August, and the full paper detailing the findings has now been published in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented to the Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes in Vienna, Austria.

The study split 3,127 participants with obesity into groups taking different strengths of the weight-loss pill, while others took a placebo for 72 weeks.

Patients from the US, China, Brazil, India, Japan, South Korea, Spain, Slovakia and Taiwan took part in the study.

Researchers from McMaster University in Canada found that after 72 weeks, people taking the lowest dose of 6mg Orforglipron lost an average of 7.5 per cent of their body weight.

Those taking the highest dose, a 36mg tablet, lost an average of 11.2 per cent of their body weight.

Among patients taking the highest doses, 54.6 per cent of people had a reduction of 10 per cent or more of body weight, 36 per cent had a reduction of 15 per cent or more, and 18.4 per cent had a reduction of 20 per cent or more.

People taking the drug also had better blood pressure, a smaller waist circumference and a reduction in bad cholesterol levels. They reported the most common side effects were “mild to moderate” gastrointestinal issues.

“In adults with obesity, 72-week treatment with Orforglipron led to significantly greater reductions in body weight than placebo,” the authors wrote. “The adverse-event profile was consistent with that of other GLP-1 receptor agonists.”

Dr Sean Wharton, who led the research, added: “This could mean an expansion of obesity interventions to groups who are currently excluded due to the cost of and lack of access to injectable medications.”

Weight-loss jabs have been hailed as transformative by health leaders. But injections come with additional work for overstretched health services, so tablet forms of medication, which are expected to be cheaper and easier to use, may offer a new hope for the millions of people looking to lose weight.

Eli Lilly said in August it was putting up the list price of the drug by as much as 170 per cent following pressure from Donald Trump, who said he wanted to bring overseas prices on US drugs into line with US costs.

The move sparked panic among many who already take the drug, with long-term users on higher doses expected to be forced to shell out an extra £100 each month. However, the new pill is expected to be cheaper.

Dr Crystal Wyllie at Asda Online Doctor said: “Taking a pill is much more convenient for patients who struggle with needles, and also easier for healthcare services to administer. With manufacturing costs likely lower than those of injectable medications, Orforglipron could be cheaper to buy, store, and transport.”

White House’s Karoline Leavitt appears to connect earthquake to Charlie Kirk’s death

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Tuesday shared a social media post on a personal account suggesting that an earthquake recorded in Utah last week was a sign of God’s anger at the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Leavitt, who describes herself as a devout Christian, shared a post on Instagram that read: “On the night Charlie was shot, a 4.1 earthquake struck Utah. In scripture, 40 represents trials; 41 signifies a shift. It hit at 5:57 local time, 7:57 Eastern.”

“Acts 7:57 describes Stephen, the first martyr, stoned as the crowd silenced his truth. The Bible says the earth trembles when God is angry. That night, as a voice was silenced, the ground groaned.”

She reposted the screenshot of a Twitter post, adding: “Wow.”

According to The Daily Beast, a seismograph station operated by the University of Utah recorded a 4.1 magnitude earthquake at 5:57 pm local time, just hours after Kirk was killed by a single gunshot to the neck while speaking at Utah Valley University.

The post shared by Leavitt suggests a connection between the time of the earthquake — which was 7:75 pm Eastern Time — and the Bible passage Acts 7, verse 57, which recounts the story of Saint Stephen being stoned to death.

The White House has been rocked by the violent death of Kirk, a 31-year-old who was close to numerous members of the administration as well as a close friend to the president’s sons.

He was instrumental in Trump’s choice to elevate then-Ohio senator J.D. Vance to the vice presidency by naming him as his running-mate in last year’s election.

Vance, who guest-hosted Kirk’s eponymous podcast on Monday from his office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, praised the late firebrand as “the smartest political operative I ever met” and a “joyful warrior for our country.”

He also partly blamed his assassination on an “incredibly destructive movement of left wing extremism” that he said had grown within the U.S. over the past few years.

Kirk, Vance said, “was a critical part of getting Donald Trump elected as president, getting me elected as vice president, and so much of our success over the last seven months is due to his efforts, his staffing, his support and his friendship.

Leavitt, who appeared as a guest alongside Vance, said Kirk had been “so inspiring to me as a young conservative woman” and recalled how she’d gotten to know him during her failed 2022 campaign for a New Hampshire House seat.

“I got to know him personally when I decided to run for Congress, and he was a tremendous supporter and friend,” she said.
