Colbert battles former press secretary over Biden’s mental state after debate

Late-night host Stephen Colbert sparred with former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Monday over former President Joe Biden‘s mental acuity and the accusation that the former president was betrayed.

“It was very personal for those of us who watched it too, because it was a shock to our system to see that. Because — I mean, you’re talking to a guy who helped raise $25 million for Joe Biden in March of that same year,” Colbert, a staunch Biden supporter, told Jean-Pierre. “And three months later, I saw a guy who I had not seen backstage at the benefit that I did. It seemed like a dramatically different person. And at 81 years old, that’s not entirely unexpected. You can imagine why people got so worried.”

Jean-Pierre insisted she had seen Biden every day and argued he was able to govern. The former press secretary has expressed frustration with the Democratic Party for pressuring the former president out of the race, and wrote in her new book, “Independent,” that she couldn’t “stomach” being part of it anymore.

“I’m not questioning his heart or his policies, but it takes more than that to be the president of the United States,” Colbert said. “And in a moment of great pressure on stage, we saw someone shock us and worry us. And nothing could assuage that worry. So I don’t think it was necessarily a betrayal of Joe Biden as other people saying, ‘We don’t think we were shown the Joe Biden that you saw.'”

KARINE JEAN-PIERRE SAYS BIDEN HEALTH TALKING POINTS WERE TIGHTLY CONTROLLED AT SENIOR LEVEL

Jean-Pierre said she did not disagree that Biden’s June 2024 debate performance was disappointing.

“Disappointment is such a light term,” Colbert pushed back. “It was harrowing. OK, look, listen, we are never going to agree on this other than the fact that I’m glad that you came here tonight.”

Colbert’s criticism was notable, given the late-night host has been a vocal Biden supporter.

During an interview with “CBS Mornings” on Monday, Jean-Pierre argued that Biden was sharp and able to govern. CBS hosts Tony Dokoupil and Gayle King were also skeptical of Jean-Pierre’s arguments during the interview.

COLBERT FAILS TO ASK HARRIS ABOUT BIDEN DECLINE, AVOIDS HER INVOLVEMENT IN TRUMP’S ’60 MINUTES’ LAWSUIT

“I have to say, I thought you were going to say that, try as you might to convince Joe Biden to drop out of the race — because what we were seeing is what you were seeing, and he was struggling, and couldn’t do it — I thought you were going to say you were angry at that,” Dokoupil began. “What you said in this book is you’re angry at the people who tried to push him out.”

“Some Americans are going to say, ‘seriously?’” Dokoupil said.

King said it was hard to understand how Jean-Pierre didn’t witness any evidence of decline, pointing out that she had been on the plane with Biden on the way to the June 2024 debate.

“I want to pick up on what Tony was saying because I, too, thought that,” King said. “You said, people said, why didn’t members of his inner circle speak up about what many believe was the apparent decline of Joe Biden and you said you’re a member of the inner circle, and you never saw the decline. After that I wrote, ‘How?’ You even write, Karine, that you were on the plane with him going to the debate, and you didn’t see anything.”

Pentagon sends bombers and warships to Caribbean in major show of force

The United States has significantly increased its military presence across the Caribbean under U.S. Southern Command, deploying bombers, warships and Marines as part of an expanded campaign targeting drug-trafficking and so-called “narco-terrorist” networks operating near Venezuela.

In addition to seven strikes on boats believed to be carrying narcotics, the Trump administration has built up thousands of troops in the region.

War Secretary Pete Hegseth this month announced the creation of a new counter-narcotics Joint Task Force operating near Southern Command, saying it was established “to crush the cartels, stop the poison, and keep America safe.” The task force will coordinate air, maritime and special-operations missions across the region — marking the largest U.S. military effort in the Caribbean in decades.

U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortress bombers and Marine Corps F-35B Lightning II fighters recently conducted a bomber attack demonstration over the region — a show of force captured in War Department imagery. For four hours on Wednesday, B-52s from Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana patrolled near Venezuela’s coast in a display of military might aimed at Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro.

TRUMP UNLEASHES US MILITARY POWER ON CARTELS. IS A WIDER WAR LOOMING?

At least seven U.S. Navy warships and one nuclear submarine are believed to be patrolling the region.

The USS Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group is also operating in the Caribbean Sea. Ship spotters photographed the flagship USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) off the coast of Ponce, Puerto Rico, on Friday. The group includes USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD-28), USS San Antonio (LPD-17) and the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), based at Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C. The 22nd MEU comprises Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 263 (Reinforced), Combat Logistics Battalion 26 and Battalion Landing Team 3/6.

Three U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers — USS Jason Dunham (DDG-109), USS Gravely (DDG-107) and USS Stockdale (DDG-106) — are currently deployed in the Caribbean, joined by the guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG-70) and the littoral combat ship USS Wichita (LCS-13), which has been operating near Cuba.

Open-source reporting indicates that a U.S. nuclear-powered attack submarine has been deployed near Venezuela, although the exact number of nuclear vessels and their precise locations have not been confirmed by the Pentagon.

WAR DEPARTMENT LAUNCHES NEW COUNTER-NARCOTICS TASK FORCE UNDER TRUMP DIRECTIVE TO CRUSH CARTELS

In Puerto Rico, the U.S. has deployed ten F-35 fighter jets and at least three MQ-9 Reaper drones, transforming the island into a key logistics and surveillance hub for operations in the region. Reuters imagery from Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, shows the drones staged for use.

Recent photos also show that Naval Station Roosevelt Roads, a major U.S. facility closed in 2004, has been reactivated. Satellite images and on-site photos reveal aircraft and personnel operating from the base, including at least one AC-130J Ghostrider gunship equipped with Hellfire missiles parked at José Aponte de la Torre Airport, which serves the installation.

Special-operations aviation has increased as well. In early October, MH-6 “Little Bird” light-attack helicopters — typically used by U.S. Army Special Operations Forces — and MH-60M Black Hawks were spotted training off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago, according to images first published by The Washington Post.

The Pentagon has not detailed how long the buildup will last, but a New York Times report estimates about 10,000 U.S. troops are currently operating in the theater — the largest American presence in the region in decades.

U.S. defense officials have linked the deployments to ongoing counter-narcotics and counter-terrorism missions tied to recent strikes on vessels accused of trafficking drugs from Venezuela. The moves come as tensions escalate following Colombia’s claim that one of the U.S. strikes killed a fisherman, not a trafficker — an accusation the White House has denied.

SECRETARY OF WAR HEGSETH LANDS IN PUERTO RICO AS US RAMPS UP CARIBBEAN CARTEL FIGHT WITH NAVAL FORCES

Analysts say the combination of heavy bombers, stealth fighters, Marines and Navy surface combatants underscores a shift from law-enforcement interdiction to a broader show of force aimed at deterring state-linked trafficking networks.

“This is a posture we haven’t seen in the Caribbean since the early 2000s,” said one defense analyst familiar with U.S. operations in the region. “It’s clearly meant to send a message — not just to traffickers, but to governments accused of enabling them.”

Experts generally agree the U.S. buildup does not suggest preparations for all-out war.

Mark Cancian, a senior defense adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told Fox News Digital that such a campaign would require between 50,000 and 100,000 U.S. troops — far more than the roughly 10,000 currently in theater.

“What I think they’ve put in place is the capability to launch strikes at either the cartels or the Maduro regime,” Cancian said. “If I had to bet, it’s probably against the cartels — but I wouldn’t rule out something against the regime.”

That limited but flexible posture reflects what some experts describe as a modern form of coercive diplomacy.

“It sort of looks like we’re in the throes of a 21st-century version of gunboat diplomacy,” said Brandan Buck, a foreign policy analyst at the Cato Institute. “The Trump administration is doing what it can to force some sort of transition [of] power — out of Maduro’s hands and into someone else’s — without a classic invasion.”

Ryan Berg, director of the Americas Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the current deployment gives Washington strike options without committing to a major ground war.

“The force posture currently in the southern Caribbean is consonant with the potential for precision strikes using Tomahawk missiles or other weapons, but without risking the lives of U.S. service personnel,” Berg said.

NJ lawmakers refuse to back ‘job-killing socialist’ while fighting for survival

Zohran Mamdani‘s mayoral race to lead New York City as a self-described democratic socialist has emerged as one of the most high-profile elections of the 2025 off-year cycle.

But across the Hudson River in New Jersey, Mamdani’s race has stayed out of the spotlight, as the Garden State’s gubernatorial election takes center stage and Democrats in the state sidestep endorsing or even mentioning the progressive candidate.

“I am not getting engaged in that race, because I’m completely focused on New Jersey,” New Jersey Rep. Mikie Sherrill, the Democratic nominee for governor, said earlier in October of Mamdani’s race. “I’m going to let the people of New York decide that race.”

The off-year election cycle mainly has focused on four elections: California’s ballot measure to redistrict congressional lines; New York City’s mayoral election; and the Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial elections.

DEMOCRAT IN KEY GOVERNOR RACE KEEPS DISTANCE FROM NYC’S MAMDANI

Mamdani is a self-described democratic socialist, with critics identifying him more as a “communist” despite the candidate pushing back that he does not hold communist ideologies.

Fox News Digital previously has reported that Mamdani has backed radical Marxist and communist principles, such as supporting the seizure of the “means of production,” endorsing a tax plan aimed at “taxing the wealthiest New Yorkers,” and openly calling for a communist mayor of New York City in 2020.

The New Jersey gubernatorial election and Democratic lawmakers hailing from the state have overwhelmingly avoided the Mamdani race as other lawmakers and Democratic leaders — from Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders to New York Attorney General Letitia James to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore — have thrown their support behind the candidate.

Back in July, Sherrill said she likely would support Mamdani’s nomination as the Democrat’s candidate for mayor before sidestepping months later.

“If he’s the Democratic candidate, which it sounds like he is, I assume I will (support him),” she told NBC Philadelphia in July.  “If he’s going to be working on efficient government, that’s something very interesting to me.”

Mamdani, however, said he would “absolutely” support the New Jersey Democrat during a local interview with New York media in August.

New Jersey Democratic Sen. Cory Booker also has evaded answering whether he endorses Mamdani in an August CNN interview.

“I have learned a long time ago: Let New York politics be New York politics,” Booker said when pressed if he would support Mamdani. “We’ve got enough challenges in Jersey. I got a governor’s race. I’m supporting Mikie Sherrill. I got legislative races. That’s where my energy is going to go going into November.”

“New York City, I love you,” Booker added. “You’re my neighbor. You’re about 10 miles from where I live. You guys figure out your elections. I’m going to focus on mine.”

NY STATE DEM BOSS REFUSES TO ENDORSE MAMDANI, CAUSING HUGE RIFT IN PARTY

Current Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy and New Jersey Sen. Andy Kim have not publicly weighed in on Mamdani’s race, a Fox News Digital review of recent past remarks found.

One of Sherrill’s primary challengers, Democrat Rep. Josh Gottheimer, however, repeatedly has slammed Mamdani as “a job-killing socialist.”

“You will hear no ambiguity out of my mouth,” Gottheimer said in July. “We do not need a job-killing socialist who wants to raise taxes and supports antisemitic rhetoric. Right? In a city with the highest taxes in the country and the largest Jewish population.”

Gottheimer also teamed up with a Republican colleague from across the Hudson River, New York Rep. Mike Lawler, to slam Mamdani in September, after the socialist candidate said he would scrap a Holocaust remembrance group’s definition of “antisemitism” if elected mayor.

EX-MAYOR DE BLASIO TOUTS SOCIALIST MAMDANI AS NEW YORK CITY’S ANSWER TO TRUMP POLICIES

“Zohran Mamdani’s reckless attempt to roll back New York City’s adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism is shameful, dangerous, and completely disgusting,” the pair of lawmakers said in a joint statement in September.

Lesser known New Jersey elected officials have endorsed Mamdani, including left-wing Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.

Baraka found himself in the crosshairs of the Trump administration’s deportation efforts when he was arrested and charged in May for trespassing at a federal immigration detention center while attempting to hold an oversight tour of the facility. The charge was later dropped, with Baraka later suing interim U.S. Attorney Alina Habba for false arrest and malicious prosecution.

Baraka is listed on Mamdani’s endorsement page, with the Newark mayor posting an endorsement video to his social media accounts in June celebrating that the New York City candidate would be “strong on Democratic values” and defend the Constitution if elected.

The New Jersey election is highly anticipated following President Donald Trump’s inroads with voters in the deep blue state in the 2024 election, sparking renewed enthusiasm to flip the state red.

New Jersey, as expected, backed former Vice President Kamala Harris as president in the 2024 race, but post-election data showed Trump and the GOP flipped five counties red, with Trump specifically cutting his 2020 loss from 16 points to six in 2024.

As millions nationwide protested peacefully during the anti-Trump “No Kings” protests on Saturday, several now-viral social media clips have overshadowed the day’s events.

In Chicago, a woman whom social media users identified as a K-8 STEM teacher with the Chicago Public School system at Nathan Hale Elementary School in the city, was captured on video apparently mocking Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

The woman, wearing a gray shirt and holding a Mexican flag, can be seen standing in front of a line of protesters, yelling at a truck as it passed by. As the occupants of the truck displayed a pro-Kirk sign, the woman put her pointer and middle finger to her neck, pretending to pull a trigger and yelling, “Bang, bang.”

PROTESTERS NATIONWIDE HOLD ‘NO KINGS’ RALLIES AMID GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

Many online have called for her firing, while high-profile conservatives also reacted to the video.

“The most vile reactions to Charlie’s murder have almost all been public school teachers and professors,” Turning Point USA’s Andrew Kolvet posted on X. “Tells you a lot about what America’s children are facing and why TPUSA is more important than ever.”

Chicago Public Schools confirmed for Fox News Digital on Monday that it is aware that an employee was filmed at a protest in Chicago and is the subject of social media posts.

“Chicago Public Schools (CPS) remains committed to creating and maintaining a welcoming, safe, and inclusive teaching and learning environment, free from harassment, bias, or harm of any kind,” CPS said in a statement.

“While CPS does not comment on specific personnel matters, the District follows a consistent process when allegations of misconduct are reported. Employees found to have violated Board policy are subject to disciplinary action.”

Elsewhere in Chicago, a man was captured on video yelling into a bullhorn that ICE agents should be killed.

“You gotta grab a gun, we gotta turn around the guns on this fascist system. These ICE agents gotta get shot and wiped out,” the man said in a video posted to X. “The same machinery that’s on full display right there has to get wiped out.”

The Chicago Police Department did not return a request for comment.

Outside the ICE facility in the Chicago suburb of Broadview, Illinois, where protesters have been rallying, sometimes violently, for more than a month, a man was captured on video encouraging a child to beat an effigy of President Donald Trump

“Take a turn, buddy, take a swing!” a man in a yellow shirt holding a Trump piñata said while handing a masked child a blunt force object.

The child swung wildly at the piñata, clubbing it several times and stabbing it several times more.

NATIONWIDE UNREST LOOMS AS ‘NO KINGS’ DEMONSTRATORS BEGIN TO GATHER IN MAJOR US CITIES

“Yeah! Get his body! Get his body!” the man in the yellow shirt yelled.

When a woman dressed in a Statue of Liberty costume pointed out to the crowd and the man in the yellow shirt that there were “right-wingers” among them, the man was defiant.

“Oh yeah! Good!” the man said. “Make me famous, motherf—–s!”

That video was posted to X by Frontlines Turning Point USA.

In a fourth video, a man in a shirt that says “86 47,” a phrase made popular when former FBI director James Comey posted it on social media, is asked to explain the meaning of the numbers.

Eighty-six is popular slang for “kill,” and is often used in restaurants when a menu item is sold out. Trump is the 47th president of the United States.

MILLIONS EXPECTED TO FLOOD STREETS AT ‘NO KINGS’ PROTESTS TARGETING TRUMP ACROSS ALL 50 STATES

“Kill the son of a b—-!” the man exclaimed when asked about the slogan.

“Kill who?” the person filming asked.

“The 47th president!” the man replies.

On Monday, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed to Fox News Digital that the man, whose identity has not been confirmed, is under investigation.

Popular X user LibsOfTiktok posted photos from what it says is Denver’s “No Kings” protest.

Daniel Naroditsky, a chess prodigy-turned-grandmaster who helped bring the centuries-old game into the digital age through livestreams and online lessons, has died at 29.

Naroditsky was considered one of the most influential voices in modern chess after building a major following on YouTube and Twitch, where thousands watched his educational videos.

He won the Under-12 world championship before becoming a grandmaster at 18 — the game’s highest title short of world champion.

CHESS PRODIGY, 10, MAKES HISTORY AFTER DEFEATING 60-YEAR-OLD GRANDMASTER

Naroditsky, the son of Jewish immigrants from Ukraine and Azerbaijan, published his first strategy book, “Mastering Positional Chess,” at 14, becoming one of the youngest chess authors ever. He was born and raised in San Mateo County, California.

The Charlotte Chess Center in North Carolina, where Naroditsky trained and worked as a coach, called him “a talented chess player, educator, and beloved member of the chess community.”

“Let us remember Daniel for his passion and love for the game of chess, and for the joy and inspiration he brought to us all every day,” his family said in a statement shared by the center. The cause of death was not immediately known.

8-YEAR-OLD BOY MAKES HISTORY BECOMING YOUNGEST TO DEFEAT GRANDMASTER IN CHESS

Naroditsky’s top scalp in world chess was in 2021 when he defeated Fabiano Caruana, as World No. 2 and the reigning U.S. Champion.

He consistently ranked in the top 200 worldwide for traditional chess and excelled at a fast-paced style called blitz chess, maintaining a top 25 ranking throughout his adult career. Most recently, Naroditsky, known to many as Danya, won the U.S. National Blitz Championship in August.

Naroditsky is credited with introducing the professional chess world and a new generation of online fans discovering the game for the first time through thousands of livestreams and tutorials.

Fellow grandmasters credited Naroditsky with introducing the sport to a wider audience by livestreaming many of his matches and sharing live commentary on others. Thousands of people regularly tuned in on YouTube and the interactive streaming platform Twitch to watch Naroditsky play.

“He loved streaming, and he loved trying to be educational. The chess world is very grateful,” Hikaru Nakamura, an American grandmaster, said on a livestream Monday.

A Chinese woman was indicted by a judge in Paris for allegedly stealing nearly $2 million worth of gold nuggets from the city’s National Museum of Natural History, including items dating back to the California gold rush.

The Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office announced Tuesday that the 24-year-old suspect was charged with organized theft and criminal conspiracy following the Sept. 16 heist. She was arrested two weeks later in Barcelona, Spain, as she was preparing to return to China, it added.

Prosecutors said on the morning of Sept. 16, a museum curator was notified by a cleaning staff member of debris inside the facility and the disappearance of gold nuggets usually on display, which included an 11-pound nugget from Australia, items linked to the 19th century California gold rush and a nugget gifted by Tsar Nicholas I of Russia in 1833.

An investigation determined that two doors at the museum were cut open with a circular saw. In the mineralogy gallery, the display case containing the nuggets was broken into with a blowtorch, authorities said.

At the site, investigators found a screwdriver, saws, the blowtorch and three gas canisters used to power the blowtorch, according to the prosecutor’s office.

It said surveillance footage revealed that a single person entered the museum by force around 1 a.m. on the morning of the heist.

The Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office estimated that the financial loss of the gold nuggets is around $1.74 million, while an additional $58,000 worth of damage was caused by the break-in. It also said the historical and scientific value of the gold pieces was priceless.

At the time of her arrest in Barcelona, the suspect attempted to dispose of around two pounds of melted gold pieces, prosecutors added.

They said the investigation remains ongoing, as authorities are trying to figure out what happened to the stolen items and if there are any accomplices.

In France, the organized theft charge is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

Flight diverted after crew ‘was knocking on the cockpit door,’ FAA says

A SkyWest flight made an emergency landing Monday night after its flight crew “was knocking on the cockpit door” over a communications issue with the pilot, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said.

The FAA told FOX Business that, “SkyWest Flight 6469 landed safely after returning to Eppley Airfield in Omaha, Nebraska, around 7:45 p.m. local time on Monday, Oct. 20, after declaring an emergency when the pilot could not contact the cabin crew.”

“After landing, it was determined there was a problem with the inter-phone system and the flight crew was knocking on the cockpit door,” the FAA added. “The flight was headed to Los Angeles International Airport.”

SkyWest, a regional carrier, told FOX Business on Tuesday that, “SkyWest Flight 6469, operating as American Eagle from Omaha to Los Angeles on Monday night, returned to Omaha out of abundance of caution after experiencing communication issues with a flight crew mic.”

A 23-year-old Florida man with a violent criminal record spent two months on the run before his capture on charges of rape and attempted murder, then walked out of jail after less than two days on a $9,500 bond.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Jacoby Tillman attacked a woman from behind around 8:20 a.m. on July 25, choking her unconscious on the Little Econ Greenway trail.

Tillman was due in court Tuesday morning for an arraignment, where Judge Vincent Chiu agreed to the prosecution’s motion to revoke bond. He was expected to be transferred to the Orange County Jail after the hearing.

His girlfriend, whose name is redacted in court documents, alleged to detectives that Tillman told her, “I didn’t rape the lady. I was trying to kill the lady.” He later allegedly explained, “Because I wanted to know what it is like to choke someone out,” according to court documents.

She also alleged that Tillman had choked her previously and that his mother tried to help him avoid capture after she saw news coverage of the attack, including surveillance video.

The victim told deputies she awoke face down, with her shorts and undergarments gone, according to the court documents. The suspect was gone when she came to, and she ran for help. She encountered several other people further down the trail, and they called 911 and gave her a spare set of shorts.

In addition to being choked unconscious, a police affidavit identified injuries to both of her eyes and her nose.

Further down the trail, another jogger saw a man matching Tillman’s description “sprinting” away, according to the affidavit. He told detectives he thought it was “odd” and then found the victim’s phone and car keys on the ground nearby.

Security cameras along the edge of the trail also allegedly recorded Tillman throwing the victim’s underwear over a fence.

The attack prompted authorities to warn women to remain vigilant while walking or running, stop using noise-canceling headphones and not to jog alone.

Jennifer Lawrence reflects on taking breaks from acting and life outside Hollywood

Jennifer Lawrence was once “at peace” with the thought of leaving Hollywood behind.

During a recent appearance on “The Graham Norton Show,” Lawrence dished on her acting career while promoting her latest movie, “Die My Love,” with co-stars Jeremy Allen White, Bruce Springsteen and Tessa Thompson.

According to People, Norton asked Lawrence if she was ever worried about getting back into the industry after taking a couple of extended breaks over the years – she took two years off between 2019’s “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” and 2021’s “Don’t Look Up,” and another two years between her 2023 comedy “No Hard Feelings” and “Die My Love.”

JAMIE LEE CURTIS PLANNING HER HOLLYWOOD EXIT SO SHE’S NOT ‘REJECTED’ LIKE HER FAMOUS PARENTS

“I was at peace with that possibility of happening. [Hollywood] is a lot. I think I would’ve been fine. Well, I mean, no — I would be really upset,” Lawrence said.

She added that because she worked consistently throughout her 20s, she wondered what else was “out here” beyond the silver screen.

“I made COVID happen,” Lawrence joked about the timing of her first acting break. “I was just like, ‘I want to take a break.’ They were like, ‘the world is shutting down.'”

In 2021, Lawrence spoke to Vanity Fair about other reasons that led up to her acting hiatus in 2019, admitting, “I was not pumping out the quality that I should have.”

She continued, “I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I’d gotten sick of me. It had just gotten to a point where I couldn’t do anything right. If I walked a red carpet, it was, ‘Why didn’t she run?'”

Prior to her first break, Lawrence starred in films like “Passengers,” “Mother!” and “Red Sparrow,” which underperformed at the box office.

Lawrence told the outlet that she continued to take on roles during that time period because she was so used to “people-pleasing” in her career.

“I think that I was people-pleasing for the majority of my life,” Lawrence said. “Working made me feel like nobody could be mad at me: ‘Okay, I said yes, we’re doing it. Nobody’s mad.’ And then I felt like I reached a point where people were not pleased just by my existence. So that kind of shook me out of thinking that work or your career can bring any kind of peace to your soul.”

She continued, “I didn’t have a life. I thought I should go get one.”

Lawrence decided to do just that. In 2019, she married Cooke Maroney, an art gallerist. During her interview with Vanity Fair, she told the outlet that she enjoyed doing mundane tasks with her husband.

“I really enjoy going to the grocery store with him. I don’t know why but it fills me with a lot of joy. I think maybe because it’s almost a metaphor for marriage. ‘Okay, we’ve got this list. These are the things we need. Let’s work together and get this done,'” she said.

In 2022, Lawrence and Maloney welcomed their first child together – a son, Cy Maroney. They welcomed their second child earlier this year, but have chosen not to disclose the baby’s name or gender, sources told People at the time.
