Americans flee high-crime, pricy cities — new report shows where they’re finding peace

With many Americans leaving high-cost, high-crime cities behind, a new study found that daily life in some U.S. communities is significantly more “relaxed.”

A new ranking by LawnStarter shows that many pockets of calm exist far from urban centers, which are ripe with stress and instability.

The study analyzed 500 cities on 42 metrics related to well-being, including sleep quality, mental health, commute times, access to nature, financial stability and recreation.

Wealthy suburbs and tech hubs with high incomes and reliable local amenities help shield residents from some of the stresses many other parts of the country deal with, the lawn care service’s report found.

NATION’S ‘MOST STRESSFUL’ AIRPORT CALLED OUT IN STUDY FOR POOR CHECK-IN TIMES, DEPARTURE DELAYS

San Jose took the top spot among large cities, mainly for its mental and physical well-being scores. San Francisco and Seattle, which have ample outdoor access and high salaries, followed closely behind. Suburban havens in midsize cities also topped the list, including Sunnyvale, California; Naperville, Illinois; and Carmel, Indiana.

Smaller cities such as Newton, Massachusetts; Mountain View, California; and Woodbury, Minnesota, also ranked highly with strong scores in mental health, finances and social support.

LawnStarter noted that 26 of the top 30 cities have median household incomes of $106,000 or more, well above the national median of about $84,000.

At the bottom of the rankings were cities such as Flint, Michigan; Dayton, Ohio; and Detroit. They had high smoking rates, elevated blood pressure, inadequate sleep and long-term economic strain drag down quality of life, according to the findings. Other cities faring poorly, such as Memphis and Cleveland, battle high crime, traffic fatalities and persistent poverty.

While California cities dominated the top tier thanks to high incomes and positive wellness factors, parts of the Pacific Northwest, like Spokane, Washington, and Eugene, Oregon, landed on the opposite end with some of the nation’s highest depression rates, a trend often linked to long, dark winters and seasonal affective disorder.

Many large urban centers face intense pressure from record-high housing costs, deteriorating infrastructure and illegal immigration surges that strain public services, according to multiple reports. As a result, many Americans have already fled high-cost cities in search of safer neighborhoods, more space and a lower cost of living.

Many Americans are increasingly leaving high-cost metro areas in search of safer neighborhoods, more space and a lower cost of living, according to Business Insider.

The New York Post reported that both New York City and Los Angeles have seen major worker losses as residents flee to cheaper, lower-stress cities in the South.

Residents are especially fleeing California, South Florida, Long Island and New Jersey “in droves” for the South, according to a July report from personal finance magazine Kiplinger. Those moves are primarily driven by surging housing costs, overcrowding and a sharply higher cost of living. Nearly two-thirds of movers went to lower-cost Southern and Sun Belt cities, the outlet reported, places that often overlap with the nation’s most relaxed and least stressed communities.

“Public policies that provide income security, safe housing, good nutrition, health insurance and family-friendly workplaces would go a very long way in reducing stress nationwide,” Boston University sociology professor Deborah Carr said in the LawnStarter report. “However, that is a big wish list that is difficult to achieve.”

Actor Richard Gere breaks silence on Academy Awards absence over political stance

Actor Richard Gere offered a rare remark about his nearly 20-year absence from the Oscars during an interview with Variety Wednesday, telling the outlet he was rather unfazed by the academy’s decision.

Gere disappeared from the show after he went off-script while presenting at the 1993 Academy Awards, denouncing China’s “horrendous, horrendous human rights issue” in Tibet.

“I didn’t take it particularly personally,” Gere told Variety. “I didn’t think there were any bad guys in the situation. I do what I do, and I certainly don’t mean anyone any harm. I mean to harm anger. I mean to harm exclusion.

HARRISON FORD SAYS HE DOESN’T ‘KNOW OF A GREATER CRIMINAL IN HISTORY’ THAN TRUMP

“I mean to harm human rights abuses, but I try to stay as close to where His Holiness comes from … that everyone is redeemable, and, in the end, everyone has to be redeemed or none of us [are]. So, in that sense, I don’t take it personally.”

During the interview, Gere said his activism was inspired by his longtime friend, the Dalai Lama, who is the subject of “Wisdom of Happiness,” a 2025 documentary he executive produced.

Although Gere told Variety his absence “never came up” in his conversations with the Dalai Lama, he recalled reacting strongly when he was pitched a script for a biopic about the spiritual leader.

ACTOR MARTIN SHEEN CALLS TRUMP THE ‘BIGGEST NOTHING IN THE WORLD,’ OFFERS SPIRITUAL ADVICE

“It was the silliest script I’d ever read,” he told the outlet. “It was the CIA literally carrying him out of the Potala Palace [in Tibet] in the middle of the night. They were trying to honor the invasion of Tibet and the escape of His Holiness after he’d been threatened by the Chinese, but it was just a ridiculous, silly story. It was like Rambo coming and getting him out.”

As noted by People, “Gere didn’t return to the Oscars stage until Feb. 24, 2013, nearly 20 years after he made his unscripted remarks.”

People added, “Gil Cates, the then-show’s producer [in 1993], was quoted as saying, ‘Does anyone care about Richard Gere’s comments about China? It’s arrogant.’”

Fox News Digital reached out to the press office of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for comment.

The “Pretty Woman” actor also commented on the state of the country and President Donald Trump, suggesting that even the Dalai Lama couldn’t change the president or the “astonishing” effect he’s had on the country.

Gere said that hearing the Dalai Lama speak made him reflect on how the United States was on the “very wrong track,” but he doubted the Tibetan spiritual leader could influence Trump.

ACTOR RICHARD GERE BELIEVES TRUMP HAS ‘ALMOST DESTROYED THE COUNTRY’ IN JUST SIX MONTHS

“I don’t know that it would touch him,” Gere said. “I would hope that it would. I would pray that it would. But, boy, I don’t know how you explain what he has done to this country, what it feels like to be an American now, 10 or 11 months in. It’s just astonishing. It’s beyond what anyone could ever imagine.”

He encouraged Americans to take responsibility for the leaders they elect and instead support people who can create a better world.

“If we want a world a certain way, then we have to elect leaders who have a similar vision to us and will lead us towards this higher level of possibility — who we are as individuals and how we can create a world, a society where people can live with each other rather than this battlefield every day, all day long, with the craziness,” Gere said.

“Especially, as I say, coming from this very crude mentality that is now in our leadership.”

Court records obtained by Fox News Digital revealed a man charged in a violent stabbing on a Charlotte, North Carolina, light rail on Friday is a criminal illegal immigrant previously deported multiple times.

Oscar Solarzano, 33, of Honduras, was arrested in the stabbing and is charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with serious injury, breaking/entering a motor vehicle, carrying a concealed weapon and intoxicated/disruptive behavior, according to multiple Departement of Homeland Security (DHS) sources and arrest warrants obtained by Fox News Digital.

Bond was not set due to Solarzano’s immigration status, according to a release order filed in Mecklenburg County.

He was booted from the country by the Trump administration in March 2018 on a deportation order and reentered illegally during the Biden administration at the Texas border in March 2021, DHS sources said.

Solarzano was deported a second time by the Biden administration and reentered illegally as a got-away at an unknown time and location.

At about 4:49 p.m. Friday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers responded to a call regarding assault with a deadly weapon.

When they arrived, they found the victim, identified as Kenyon Kareem-Shemar Dobie, with a stab wound, according to warrants.

CMPD noted Dobie was in critical but stable condition when he was taken to a hospital.

Prior to the attack, warrants allege, Solarzano broke into a railroad car “with the intent to commit a felony,” while carrying a large fixed-blade knife.

While intoxicated, he challenged Dobie to a fight, cursing and shouting at others using “unintelligible and slurred words,” according to court documents.

Solarzano has a prior conviction for robbery in the U.S. and prior arrests for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest and false ID, DHS sources said.

Court records indicate he had known aliases, including Solarzano-Garcia, Oscar Herardo and Kevin Garcia.

Solarzano has a scheduled court appearance Dec. 8 and will later be released into Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody, according to a release order.

He is being provided with a Spanish interpreter, according to arrest records.

The stabbing attack comes months after Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, 23, was fatally stabbed on a LYNX Blue Line light rail while on her way home from work. Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, who is accused of killing Zarutska, was charged with violence against a railroad carrier and mass transportation system resulting in death, a capital offense under federal law.

President Donald Trump reacted to the news on Truth Social Saturday, saying, “Another stabbing by an Illegal Migrant in Charlotte, North Carolina. What’s going on in Charlotte? Democrats are destroying it, like everything else, piece by piece!!!”

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also chimed in, calling out Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles in an X post.

“Apparently, the death of Iryna Zarutska wasn’t enough. What is it going to take for @CLTMayor to remove violent criminals off the streets and protect her constituents?” Duffy wrote. “The time to act is NOW.”

The Department of Homeland Security, ICE and CMPD did not immediately respond to additional inquiries from Fox News Digital.

Rosie O’Donnell struggles with Trump fixation after moving family overseas

Rosie O’Donnell is sounding the alarm about her ongoing fixation with President Donald Trump.

The 63-year-old, along with some of her friends and family, spoke to the Washington Post about her move to Ireland after Trump’s reelection last November, and one thing was made clear from the article: she “can’t resist” speaking about Trump.

O’Donnell told the outlet that she promised her therapist the Wednesday before Thanksgiving that she would refrain from posting about Trump for two days.

ROSIE O’DONNELL FIRES BACK AFTER TRUMP RENEWS THREAT TO REVOKE HER US CITIZENSHIP

It fell apart within hours.

A longtime friend, Jennifer Kopetic, was described as “annoyed” when she told O’Donnell during a recent visit, “Roseann, you’ve got to detach. You’ve got to disconnect.”

She vowed again — three days this time — telling her 1.2 million Instagram followers she was “gonna try again to not give him a minute of me.” However, she failed that attempt, too.

O’Donnell has said her emotional spiral began the moment Trump was elected.

“I felt on the verge of crying … when he got elected,” she previously told an Irish TV audience in March, explaining she feared a second term.

The former talk show host said her concerns were personal. A lesbian mother of five — with her youngest, 12-year-old Clay, identifying as nonbinary and diagnosed with autism — O’Donnell feared what she saw as Trump-era hostility toward LGBTQ Americans and the potential gutting of federal support for special-education programs.

ROSIE O’DONNELL SAYS DAUGHTER BLAMES TRUMP FOR FORCING THEIR FAMILY’S MOVE OUT OF AMERICA

The Washington Post reported that during Trump’s first term, she channeled her anxiety into more than 200 angry digital portraits of the former president on her iPad, labeling him “Moron,” “Loser” and “Liar.”

That kind of “obsessed” focus on Trump is exactly what convinced O’Donnell she had no choice but to leave the U.S.

Her brother Eddie, who is helping with her Irish citizenship application, called her move abroad “the best decision she’s made… honestly.”

Fox News Digital has reached out to the White House for comment.

O’Donnell’s recent remarks came after she said the political stress she carries is spilling into her family — especially her daughter, who she said blames Trump for uprooting their lives.

“My daughter is now saying, ‘Damn him. Damn Trump,’” O’Donnell said during an appearance on “The Jim Acosta Show.”

According to O’Donnell, her daughter hit their table in frustration, shouting: “He made us move for our own safety … and now he’s destroying the country.”

O’Donnell acknowledged the difficulty of trying to keep her daughter shielded from the chaos while still being honest about why they left.

“She hears everything. She recognizes what’s going on,” she said.

The comedian added she’s ready to step back from political combat.

“Somebody can tap me out… I did 22 years. I don’t need to do any more.”

The White House wasted no time responding to O’Donnell’s renewed attacks.

“Rosie O’Donnell clearly suffers from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome, and it’s better for the entire country that she decided to move away,” White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson told Fox News Digital earlier this week.

O’Donnell moved to Ireland after claiming Trump threatened to strip her of U.S. citizenship.

In October, she announced she was pursuing Irish citizenship, citing her grandparents’ roots and her desire for distance from American politics.

Elon Musk, Trump admin go scorched Earth on EU after X hit with $140M fine

Elon Musk and Trump administration officials delivered blistering criticism of the European Union after its executive branch issued a $140 million fine against Musk’s social media platform, X.

“The EU should be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries, so that governments can better represent their people,” Musk wrote on X on Saturday. “AbolishTheEU.”

The European Commission said Friday it was fining X for “non-compliance with transparency obligations” under the Digital Services Act (DSA), adding that it was specifically “holding X accountable” for what the EU deems “deceptive” design of X’s “blue checkmark,” a “lack of transparency of its advertising repository,” and “failure to provide access to public data for researchers.”

The commission posted the $140 million fine announcement on X.

TRUMP’S FULL-COURT PRESS AGAINST ‘ORWELLIAN’ EUROPEAN CENSORSHIP INTENSIFIES AMID US EFFORTS TO UNLEASH AI

On Friday, in response to an X post from Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, calling the fine an “abomination” and saying that President Donald Trump should impose sanctions “until this travesty is reversed,” Musk replied, “The ‘EU’ imposed this crazy fine not just on X, but also on me personally, which is even more insane!

“Therefore, it would seem appropriate to apply our response not just to the EU, but also to the individuals who took this action against me,” Musk wrote, calling the fine in another post “bulls—.” He also said, “I love Europe, but not the bureaucratic monster that is the EU.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on X that the fine “isn’t just an attack on X, it’s an attack on all American tech platforms and the American people by foreign governments.”

Before the fine was announced, Vice President JD Vance said, “The EU should be supporting free speech not attacking American companies over garbage.”

The EU adopted the DSA in 2022 to regulate online platforms such as social networks and to “prevent illegal and harmful activities online and the spread of disinformation,” but the law has since faced opposition from the Trump administration amid its free speech promotion on the global stage.

Thomas Regnier, spokesperson for Tech Sovereignty, Defense, Space and Research at the commission, argued at a briefing on Friday that the fine was not related to content moderation.

“Today’s decision has nothing to do with content moderation,” Reigner said. “It’s about transparency provisions for citizens here in the European Union.”

SAM ALTMAN EYES ROCKET COMPANY TO TAKE ON ELON MUSK IN SPACE RACE

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on X, “The Digital Services Act is designed to stifle free speech and American tech companies. We have made our position clear to our counterparts in Europe.”

“Foreign bureaucrats have zero right to tell Americans what they can and can’t say,” added Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo.

“Once again, Europe is fining a successful U.S. tech company for being a successful U.S. tech company,” said Federal Communication Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr. “Europe is taxing Americans to subsidize a continent held back by Europe’s own suffocating regulations.”

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., said, “America is done looking the other way while foreign governments seek to censor our people and bully our companies.”

The European Commission further explained its reasoning in a press release.

“X’s use of the ‘blue checkmark’ for ‘verified accounts’ deceives users,” the commission said in statement. “On X, anyone can pay to obtain the ‘verified’ status without the company meaningfully verifying who is behind the account, making it difficult for users to judge the authenticity of accounts and content they engage with. This deception exposes users to scams, including impersonation frauds, as well as other forms of manipulation by malicious actors.

Rebecca Gayheart isn’t hiding her romance.

The 54-year-old actress was spotted kissing billionaire Peter Morton, 78, during a rare night out in Beverly Hills.

Gayheart and the Hard Rock founder stepped out Wednesday at celebrity hot spot E-Baldi, where they hugged, held hands and exchanged kisses in photos obtained by Fox News Digital.

ERIC DANE’S WIFE REBECCA GAYHEART SAYS ‘MY GIRLS ARE REALLY SUFFERING’ AS FAMILY FACES ACTOR’S ALS BATTLE

The former model wore a black and white polka-dot dress, white blazer, black tights and red heels, pairing it with a matching red purse. Morton coordinated with his girlfriend in a dark sweater, black pants and white sneakers.

Although the pair have been linked for years, public sightings have been rare as Gayheart continues to navigate what she describes as a “super complicated” relationship with estranged husband Eric Dane.

Gayheart and Dane, 53, tied the knot in 2004. They share two daughters — Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13.

The couple separated in 2018, but the divorce filing was withdrawn in April. Just weeks later, the “Grey’s Anatomy” actor announced he had been diagnosed with ALS.

Gayheart previously opened up about what co-parenting looks like as Dane battles the progressive neurodegenerative disease. On the “Broad Ideas with Rachel Bilson & Olivia Allen” podcast, Gayheart said she’s doing everything she can to show her daughters what loyalty and family look like during difficult moments.

“I am definitely trying to show [my daughters] that we show up for people no matter what. And he is our family, he is your father. We show up, and we try to do it with some dignity and some grace and just get through it, and that we will get through it the best we can,” she said. “I mean, it’s super complicated for me.”

Even though she and Dane have “been separated for eight years,” Gayheart said she’s determined to “stay optimistic” for her kids.

According to the Mayo Clinic, ALS is a “nervous-system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.” It can lead to severe muscle loss, breathing difficulties, eating problems and, in some cases, dementia.

Dane previously explained that he first started experiencing weakness in his right hand before seeking medical attention.

“I have one functioning arm,” he said during an interview on “Good Morning America.” “My left side is functioning. My right side has completely stopped working. [My left arm] is going. I feel like maybe a couple months — a few more months — and I won’t have my left hand either. It’s sobering.”

Dane was photographed in a wheelchair while leaving a Washington, D.C., airport in September. When asked by a photographer if he had a message for fans, he offered a brief but hopeful response: “Keep the faith.”

New national security document raises alarm over Europe’s future as US ally

The White House warns in a stark new National Security Strategy that Europe could be “unrecognizable in 20 years or less” due to mass migration, adding that the demographic shift raises doubts about future U.S. allies on the continent.

“Should present trends continue, the continent will be unrecognizable in 20 years or less,” the 33-page document released on Thursday reads.

It adds that the “real and more stark prospect” is of “civilizational erasure.”

Mass immigration has been one of Europe’s most volatile political flashpoints over the past decade, fueled by repeated waves of immigrants from the Middle East, Africa and South Asia.

TRUMP HIGHLIGHTS FEDERAL LAW GRANTING PRESIDENTIAL POWER TO HALT IMMIGRATION AS CRACKDOWN ESCALATES

“As such, it is far from obvious whether certain European countries will have economies and militaries strong enough to remain reliable allies,” the document says. “Many of these nations are currently doubling down on their present path. We want Europe to remain European, to regain its civilizational self-confidence, and to abandon its failed focus on regulatory suffocation.”

The national security plan cites migration policies that are “transforming the continent and creating strife,” along with “cratering birthrates” and the erosion of national identity.

The White House warns the demographic shift could have major implications for NATO and European security, noting that several member states may become “majority non-European.” That scenario, the document argues, could weaken Europe’s ability to deter adversaries and complicate U.S. efforts to maintain transatlantic stability.

“Over the long term, it is more than plausible that within a few decades at the latest, certain NATO members will become majority non-European,” the document says. “As such, it is an open question whether they will view their place in the world, or their alliance with the United States, in the same way as those who signed the NATO charter.”

The document says Europe’s economic decline is well under way, losing a 25% share of global GDP in 1990 to 14% today — “partly owing to national and transnational regulations that undermine creativity and industriousness.”

But it says that economic decline is eclipsed by the broader warning of “civilizational erasure.” It lists migration policies, censorship, political suppression, cratering birthrates and the loss of national identity as the forces driving that trajectory.

TRUMP SLAMS EUROPE OVER IMMIGRATION, SAYS ‘HORRIBLE INVASION’ IS KILLING THE CONTINENT

President Donald Trump echoed similar warnings during a visit to the United Kingdom last year, saying mass immigration would “destroy Europe” and that the continent was “not going to survive” unless governments dramatically change course.

The White House defended the warning, saying Europe is already suffering the consequences of mass immigration.

“The devastating impacts of unchecked migration and those migrants’ inability to assimilate are not just a concern for President Trump but for Europeans themselves, who have increasingly noted immigration as one of their top concerns,” White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “These open border policies have led to widespread examples of violence, spikes in crime, and more, with detrimental impacts on the fiscal sustainability of social safety net programs.”

Kelly said Trump’s border policies “saved America from such destruction,” adding that “other countries would be wise to follow suit.”

The White House pointed to a range of European data to support the administration’s concerns, citing studies showing asylum migration costing the Netherlands €475,000 per migrant, illegal immigration costing France €1.8 billion in 2023 and non-Western migrants committing disproportionate shares of violent crime in Denmark and Germany. The White House also referenced a series of fatal terror attacks across the continent carried out by migrants.

The 33-page blueprint has no named author but features a foreword by Trump, who calls the document a “roadmap to ensure America remains the greatest and most successful nation in human history.”

The document forms part of a sweeping set of national security goals in which the president vows to enforce the Monroe Doctrine while adding his own corollary aimed at expanding U.S. influence in the Western Hemisphere and countering adversaries’ growing footprint.

The Trump administration asserts that a “reasonably stable” Western Hemisphere where governments work together to fight malign foreign influence is key to U.S. national security. To achieve this, the administration vows in the document to “assert and enforce a ‘Trump Corollary’ to the Monroe Doctrine.”

Former President James Monroe issued the doctrine in his seventh annual address to Congress on Dec. 2, 1823, warning European powers against interfering in the Western Hemisphere through political influence or colonization. The U.S. Office of the Historian, part of the State Department, notes that although European nations initially paid little attention to Monroe’s declaration, it eventually became “a longstanding tenet of U.S. foreign policy.”

“After years of neglect, the United States will reassert and enforce the Monroe Doctrine to restore American preeminence in the Western Hemisphere, and to protect our homeland and our access to key geographies throughout the region,” the document reads.

“This ‘Trump Corollary’ to the Monroe Doctrine is a common-sense and potent restoration of American power and priorities, consistent with American security interests.”
