Why Trump zeroed in on Greenland and why it matters in 3 charts

Greenland rarely draws global attention. But as ice melts and great powers inch closer, the world’s largest island has become a strategic prize — one that caught President Donald Trump’s eye long before most Americans were paying attention.

A semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, Greenland is home to a key U.S. military base and has become increasingly important to global security and trade as melting ice opens new shipping lanes and access to natural resources.

That shift underscores the serious geopolitical calculation behind Trump’s interest in the island’s location, military value and the rapidly changing Arctic.

TRUMP’S PUSH TO ACQUIRE GREENLAND SPARKS INTERNATIONAL MEDIA FRENZY ON REMOTE ISLAND

Greenland is divided into five municipalities, with most of its roughly 56,000 residents living in small coastal towns, leaving the island’s vast interior largely uninhabited. Put another way, Greenland has roughly one person for every 1,000 soccer fields of land.

Greenland’s sparse population is largely a product of its geography. Roughly 80% of the island is covered by an ice sheet formed about 3 million years ago, leaving vast areas of the territory uninhabitable.

Made with Flourish • Create a chart

Despite its small population, Greenland occupies a landmass comparable to global powers. By land area, it ranks among the world’s largest territories — a scale that has drawn attention from countries such as the United States, Russia and China as competition in the Arctic intensifies. It is nearly the size of Alaska and Texas combined.

Greenland’s location off Canada’s northeastern coast places it at the heart of Arctic defense planning. The U.S. has maintained a military outpost in northwestern Greenland since 1953 at the Pituffik Space Base, now operated by the U.S. Space Force.

Russia also maintains several military installations in the region, while China has sought greater access since declaring itself a “near-Arctic state” in 2018.

Made with Flourish • Create a chart

But geography isn’t the only reason Greenland draws global interest. Retreating Arctic ice is opening shipping lanes around the island that could significantly shorten trade routes between North America, Europe and Asia, adding an economic layer to its strategic importance.

The changing landscape has also drawn attention to Greenland’s deposits of rare earth elements and other critical minerals essential to modern technology, renewable energy and military systems.

TRUMP THREATENS TARIFFS ON COUNTRIES OPPOSING GREENLAND TAKEOVER PLANS

Rare earth elements — a group of 17 minerals — sit at the center of modern economies and militaries. They allow electronics to be smaller, more powerful and more efficient and are especially important in high-performance magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, generators and precision guidance systems.

Their importance is even more pronounced in defense, where rare earths are used in missile guidance, radar, sonar, satellites and advanced aircraft. Because many of these applications have no easy substitutes, access to rare earths directly affects military readiness and technological advantage.

The world’s largest rare earth deposits are found in China, Vietnam, Brazil, Russia, Australia, Greenland and the United States. But China dominates the supply chain, accounting for roughly 60% of global mining and more than 90% of processing capacity.

Made with Flourish • Create a chart

The United States lacks a reliable, end-to-end supply chain for rare earths, leaving it dependent on foreign sources.

As the U.S. and European Union seek to reduce their reliance on China, Greenland has emerged as a potential counterweight to Beijing’s dominance and a focal point in the competition over critical minerals.

Whether the Trump administration is able to strike a deal to take over Greenland remains unclear. But as ice melts and competition in the Arctic intensifies, the island’s strategic importance is only likely to grow.

A 52-year-old man killed his wife and teenage daughter before taking his own life in a shooting inside a Los Angeles County home Thursday morning, authorities said.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies responded around 8 a.m. to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at a home in Lakewood, a city about 20 miles southeast of Los Angeles. A caller told dispatchers her father had fired a gun at her and was lying unconscious nearby, deputies said.

When deputies arrived, they met the caller, a 19-year-old woman, outside the home. She was not injured and was taken in for questioning.

Inside the house, deputies found a man lying on the floor in the den with a gunshot wound to his upper torso. He was identified as the father and shooter, Hector Lionel Alfaro, 52.

Deputies then discovered Alfaro’s 48-year-old wife, Roxana Rodriguez, in a bedroom suffering from gunshot wounds to her torso. In a second bedroom, deputies found the couple’s 17-year-old daughter, Sienna Alfaro, who had also been shot. All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

“Through investigation, Homicide Investigators learned gunshots were heard within the residence by Alfaro’s 19-year-old daughter while she was asleep,” the sheriff’s department said in a statement obtained by FOX11 Los Angeles. “Alfaro then appeared near her armed with a handgun and shot at her several times; however, she was not struck by the gunfire. Alfaro then shot himself while standing near his 19-year-old daughter.”

Two firearms were recovered from the home.

Authorities have not identified a motive. The investigation remains ongoing.

“Our hearts are broken as we share the tragic loss of a loving mother and her daughter, whose lives were taken by an act of unimaginable violence,” wrote Andrew, the husband to the couple’s eldest daughter Desiree, in a GoFundMe post. “This devastating loss has left behind their surviving children, who are now facing the world without the people who meant everything to them.”

Sienna’s soccer teammate, Hazel Ferman, remembered her friend as “a ray of sunshine” at a candlelight vigil on Saturday, according to KABC-TV.

“She’s a very jolly person,” Ferman said. “Her smile would bright up the room. Her energy was just out of this world, man like she would walk in, even though she’s a shy girl, when she would smile is like everybody knew that we just connected.”

Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem chided CBS News host Margaret Brennan on Sunday for naming the ICE agent who fatally shot Renee Good earlier this month during an interview.

Brennan asked Noem about Jonathan Ross, the ICE agent who shot Good in Minneapolis, and his injuries. Federal officials have said that when Good pulled forward in her vehicle toward the ICE officer, he acted in self-defense.

“Don’t say his name. I mean, for heaven’s sakes, we shouldn’t have people continue to dox law enforcement when they have an 8,000-percent increase in death threats against them,” Noem told Brennan.

Brennan pushed back and said, “his name is public.”

KRISTI NOEM FIRES BACK AT DEMS AMID IMPEACHMENT THREAT OVER FATAL MINNEAPOLIS ICE SHOOTING

“I know, but that doesn’t mean it should continue to be said. He got attacked with a car that was trying to take his life, and then people have attacked him and his family, and they are in jeopardy. And we have law enforcement officers every day who are getting death threats and getting attacked at their hotels, and they’re getting ice thrown at them,” Noem said.

Brennen asked the DHS secretary if she could elaborate on the ICE agent’s status after the injury.

“Well, of course, no one condones violence against anyone, but here, CBS reported that he did have internal bleeding in the torso, but he was released that same day. So is he back at work?” Brennan asked.

The CBS host also asked if Ross received a three-day suspension, as per the required guidelines.

“We followed the exact same protocols that we always have for years as to investigations into these situations,” Noem responded. “But I’m not going to talk about his medical records. I know that you know that in itself is his prerogative to discuss his health.”

Brennan then asked if the ICE agent was being investigated or if there was going to be some protocol review following the shooting.

“We are following the exact same investigative and review process that we always have under ICE and under the Department of Homeland Security and within the administration. The exact same policy that the Biden administration used,” Noem responded. “The exact same review, so we haven’t changed any of that.”

Several Democratic lawmakers called for the impeachment of Noem following the shooting of Good and her department’s response.

“ICE’s reckless actions have taken a mother from three children, a partner from a wife and inflicted unfathomable pain on our community… We will not stop fighting until we achieve real justice and accountability. That must begin with impeaching Kristi Noem and ensuring no federal agent can act as a judge, jury and executioner on our streets. It must also include full and transparent investigation and legal action against ICE,” Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., said on Wednesday.

The world’s most beautiful airport has been crowned, and it’s located in the United States.

Prix Versailles, an international architecture and design award, recently announced its selections recognizing airport terminals it considers among the world’s most beautiful.

San Francisco International Airport’s Harvey Milk Terminal 1 received the top honor.

AIRPORTS ALLOW NON-TRAVELING PUBLIC PAST SECURITY ENTRANCES FOR FIRST TIME IN DECADES

The terminal opened in June 2024, according to San Francisco International Airport’s website.

The terminal features an exhibition honoring gay rights leader Harvey Milk, highlighting his political career and impact on San Francisco through photographs and historical materials.

On Reddit, some users have praised the terminal for its engaging art and clean environment.

“Harvey Milk Terminal meets and exceeds my hopes for what an airport terminal should be in the 2020s,” one user wrote.

A Texas couple has pleaded guilty to federal charges after prosecutors revealed they used social media to defraud dozens of homeowners out of nearly $5 million under the guise of custom homes and renovations.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas, Christopher and Raquelle Judge, a married couple from Fort Worth, admitted to carrying out an elaborate scheme to deceive customers through their home renovation business, Judge DFW LLC, between August 2020 and January 2023.

The pair billed themselves as a one-stop shop for custom architecture, interior design and construction services, luring customers through social media to advertise their business while falsely claiming Christopher was an experienced architect.

“They came out to our house… and really pitched themselves as like this Chip and Joanna Gaines type of vibe,” Lane Simmons, one of the Judges’ clients, told WFAA.

Federal prosecutors revealed the couple would present clients with below-market bids to secure building contracts, before starting projects that were never finished and ultimately left victims with incomplete residences.

In the town of Runaway Bay, Christopher Judge reportedly was slapped with a total of 424 citations for code enforcement violations, which ultimately led to the FBI taking up the case.

“There were families whose kids did not get Christmas for a year or two,” Kalie Simmons, another victim of the Judges, told FOX 4. “There were families that filed bankruptcy.”

Plea documents indicate the Judges defrauded over 40 victims throughout six Texas counties, involving at least 24 different construction projects.

Court documents also showed the pair commingled victims’ payments in their primary business account, often pulling installment payments from individuals to fund unrelated construction projects – amassing a total of around $4.8 million in losses.

Federal prosecutors say the pair then spent the money on mortgage payments, living expenses and even plastic surgery while evading questions from their victims regarding delays in construction and incomplete projects.

“You just need to be careful about who you give the money to,” Roper, a former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, told FOX 4. “If it’s too good to be true, it’s probably not true.”

“You gotta wonder what happened to the money,” Roper said.

Last month, Christopher Judge pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and faces up to 20 years behind bars in federal prison. Raquelle Judge also pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, which has a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison.

Fox News Digital was unable to immediately locate Christopher Judge’s attorney for comment. Raquelle Judge’s attorney did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

The pair is scheduled to be sentenced separately later this year, according to federal prosecutors.

Newsom defies Trump administration, declares free parks for MLK Day

A month after President Donald Trump scrapped free national parks entry on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Gov. Gavin Newsom is responding – opening more than 200 California state parks for free to honor Dr. King while calling out Trump’s move.

Last month, the Trump administration reshaped when Americans can enter national parks for free, scrapping Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Juneteenth and National Public Lands Day from the 2026 calendar.

In their place, the administration added a slate of historically themed or presidentially themed dates. Flag day – which also happens to be Trump’s birthday – becomes a fee-free day for the first time, along with Constitution Day, the 110th anniversary of the National Park Service and the birthday of Theodore Roosevelt.

Newsom announced Friday that, ahead of the 100th anniversary of Black History Month, he is directing California State Parks to offer free admission at more than 200 participating parks on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 19, 2026.

ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP SUES TRUMP FOR REPLACING NATIONAL PARK PASS PHOTO WITH HIS OWN IMAGE

“While Trump works to erase Dr. King’s legacy, California will honor it,” Newsom said in a press release. “Dr. King taught us that ‘darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.’ While the Trump administration tries to erase his legacy and turn national parks and monuments into places of exclusion and fear, California answers with light.”

“That’s why I’m announcing free entry at California State Parks on Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2026 – because Dr. King’s legacy deserves to be honored, not erased,” Newsom continued. “I’m encouraging all Californians to get outside on MLK Day, spend time in nature, reflect on Dr. King’s legacy, and reaffirm our commitment to advancing civil rights for all.”

Free entry applies to vehicle day-use fees only and is available at more than 200 participating California state parks statewide, according to the governor’s office.

NATIONAL PARK GIFT SHOPS ARE ORDERED TO PURGE BIAS-DRIVEN DEI AND WOKE MERCHANDISE

Free vehicle entry is being made possible by the California State Parks Foundation rather than taxpayer dollars. The foundation’s investment is intended to keep the state parks running while also planting seeds for a lifetime of connection to the state’s “natural and cultural treasures,” Newsom’s office said.

Democratic leaders framed the move as a direct rebuke of the Trump administration’s actions.

TRUMP ADDS HIS BIRTHDAY AS FREE NATIONAL PARK DAY WHILE AXING MLK DAY AND JUNETEENTH

“As the federal government eliminates fee-free park days for holidays that celebrate Black history, California continues to revel in the glory of our civil rights pioneers,” state Sen. Akilah Weber Pierson said. “Opening our parks for everyone to enjoy encourages loved ones to come together, give back, and honor Dr. King’s legacy while enjoying the natural beauty of the Golden State.”

Some of the parks offering free entry include Big Basin Redwoods, Half Moon Bay, Sugarloaf Ridge, Doheny, Wildwood Canyon Park Property, Folsom Lake, Bidwell Mansion and Lake Oroville.

Some parks will still require a fee, including off-highway vehicle recreation areas, parks with per-person or tour fees such as Hearst Castle and locations operated by partner organizations.

Carson Beck is one win away from being a college national champion, and he didn’t even have to juggle classes to get this far.

Beck has led the Miami Hurricanes all the way to the College Football Playoff title game after transferring to the South Florida school. Beck, by his own admission, has not had many distractions off the field.

When asked if he attended class earlier in the week ahead of Monday night’s title game, he laughed off the question.

“No class. I graduated two years ago,” Beck said.

Beck, who attended Georgia before transferring, added that he is “working toward other degrees now that I’ve gotten to Miami, but these programs take a little longer than just a year to finish.”

“Obviously, I’m not enrolling again next semester. I’ll be done after this season,” Beck continued.

That response turned heads on social media.

“College football is dead,” wrote one user.

“Bro turned ‘College Athlete’ into a full time career,” added another.

“Playing college football but not attending class for two years is crazy,” said one more.

Beck doubled down on his commitment to the football program.

“I live in the facility. That’s about it. If I’m not at the facility, I’m at home, and I just kind of bounce back and forth. It’s been that way for about the past month,” Beck added.

A year after his daughter was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Urbana, Illinois, Joe Abraham has confronted the human cost of the state’s failed border and immigration policies and demanded Illinois lawmakers acknowledge her death for the first time.

While Operation Midway Blitz, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) immigration enforcement operation targeting criminal illegal immigrants, was launched in honor of Katie Abraham’s death, Abraham also warned illegal immigrants to “do things the right way.”

“If you want to really be part of America and come in here, then you have got to do things the right way,” said Abraham, who is featured in a video for The American Border Story, a national initiative exposing the human impact of America’s border crisis.

“There has got to be an orderly process where people have to understand how to behave here,” he told Fox News Digital, before describing the silence he experienced from state leadership that compounded the pain of his loss even further.

MOM PRAISES HOUSE FOR PASSING KEY IMMIGRATION BILL, BASHES CROCKETT FOR DISMISSING DAUGHTER’S MURDER

“I received utter silence and indifference from my governor,” said Abraham. “Katie got disrespect and silence.” Abraham said neither Pritzker, Sen. Dick Durbin, Sen. Tammy Duckworth nor his state or local representatives have reached out to him since she was killed.

Abraham even recalled attending a congressional Oversight Committee event in 2025 at which Pritzker and other sanctuary state governors testified, when Katie’s case was cited.

“We were sitting several feet away from him in Congress, and he didn’t spend two seconds – didn’t even look in our direction,” he said. “Father to father – I expected him to care.”

“I wanted him to say, ‘Things got out of control. We’re working on it.’ I wanted leadership and wanted him to acknowledge Katie’s life. She was worth five seconds of his time,” he added.

Katie died in the early morning hours of Jan. 19, 2025, when police said a drunk illegal alien slammed into the vehicle she was riding in with friends and fled the scene.

A second young woman, Chloe Polzin, 21, of Deerfield, died the following day from her injuries.

“They were at a stoplight in front of the hospital and were barreled into from the rear at almost 80 mph by an illegal immigrant who was drunk driving,” Abraham said.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT ALLEGEDLY DRIVING DRUNK AT EXTREME SPEED KILLED WOMAN IN VIOLENT CRASH: DHS

“[Katie] died on the scene… They had to rip open that Honda Civic… like a tuna can to drag her dead body out of it,” Abraham said, before describing his daughter as vibrant, driven and full of promise.

“Katie was a productive, talented, beautiful woman, so intelligent, so funny, so witty. She had this way of bringing people in and making them feel seen.”

She loved sports and the water, he said, and had her entire life ahead of her but will now never see her get married, and he said he will, “never walk her down the aisle or see her children.”

Abraham said the driver, Julio Cucul-Bol, is a Guatemalan national using a Mexican alias.

Authorities said Cucul-Bol had previously been deported from the U.S. He was arrested near Dallas while on a bus heading to Matamoros, Mexico. Police said he was found with fake Mexican identification under the name Juan JaHaziel Saenz-Suarez.

Cucul-Bol was sentenced to 30 years in prison after accepting a plea deal for charges including leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death, aggravated DUI resulting in death and reckless homicide.

MEET THE MINNESOTANS KILLED BY ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS THAT WALZ, DEMS NEVER HELD PRESS CONFERENCES OR VIGILS FOR

The Department of Justice (DOJ) had charged him with possessing a false Social Security card, possessing a false permanent resident card, making a false statement on a bank application and false use of a passport.

“The issue was that when he came into the U.S. there were no background checks. There were no health checks,” Abraham said. “He had HIV. That’s in the court transcripts and court documents.”

Cucul-Bol could not read or write and spoke neither English nor Spanish – rather, he spoke a Mayan language, according to Abraham. “He wasn’t working and wasn’t productive. This was also not his first foray into drunk driving,” he said.

Abraham said his criticism surrounds weak policy, which he hoped would be “rational policy and some common sense,” he said. “If you’re going to nullify federal law, you better have a process to fill that void.”

Abraham called for practical policies that protect victims and the broader public while also supporting immigrants who come legally and with good intentions. He added that, so far, the main progress has been federal agencies like DHS and ICE stepping in to assist communities despite facing resistance from multiple sides.

“ICE has to go out on the streets now, because Illinois won’t cooperate,” he said. “You can’t throw out the welcome mat to anyone and everyone, unchecked and unvetted, and then wash your hands of the consequences.”

“We can contrast Pritzker with Donald Trump, who invited us to the White House, who looked me in the eye, father to father.
