Adam Schiff confronted on poll showing widespread support for requiring photo ID to vote
Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., was confronted by a poll that found a majority of Americans support requiring photo ID to vote — which the liberal senator said would disenfranchise voters.
ABC’s Jonathan Karl began by asking Schiff about whether Democrats and Republicans could reach a compromise on supporting showing photo ID when voting, as Republicans are pushing the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. Some Democrats are comparing the SAVE Act to “Jim Crow 2.0.”
“Jonathan, what you’ve just asked is essentially: Republicans have created distrust in the elections by making claims of nonexistent fraud in the elections, and shouldn’t we use the distrust they’ve created in order to enact a voter suppression law, which is the SAVE Act, which would require people to have a birth certificate or passport — documents that millions of Americans don’t have. Almost half the country doesn’t have a passport, and I don’t know where many millions of people would even find a birth certificate,” Schiff responded.
HOUSE REPUBLICANS PUSH ELECTION OVERHAUL WITH VOTER ID, MAIL-IN BALLOT CHANGES AHEAD OF MIDTERMS
Karl said he was asking Schiff a different question, specifically about whether he would support photo ID.
“But I was asking you a different question: photo ID. Because, as you know, let’s show there was a recent poll, there’s been a lot of polls on this, but in one recent Pew poll, 83% of adults support requiring photo ID to vote. Seventy-one percent of Democrats favor requiring photo ID,” Karl said. “Is that something that you can support? And if not, why?”
Schiff argued that it would still “disenfranchise” people.
REPUBLICANS, TRUMP RUN INTO SENATE ROADBLOCK ON VOTER ID BILL
“It’s still going to be something that disenfranchises people that don’t have the proper Real ID, driver’s license ID, that don’t have the ID necessary to vote, even though they are citizens. This is another way to simply try to suppress the vote,” Schiff said.
The Pew Research poll, conducted in August 2025, found that 95% of Republicans support showing identification to vote.
Schiff added, “And the last thing I think we want to do is discourage more citizens from voting while they’re attacking those same elections, while they’re trying to do away with absentee ballot voting, while they’re trying to do away with being able to register to vote through the DMV or by the mail. So, it’s part of the broader disenfranchisement effort, and no, I don’t think that’s the right direction.”
Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has said that the SAVE Act represented “Jim Crow 2.0.”

“For instance, if you change — you’re a woman who got married and changed your last name, you won’t be able to show ID, and you’ll be discriminated against. If you can’t find a birth certificate, or a proper ID, you’ll be discriminated against. This is vicious and nasty. And I said to our Republican colleagues, it will not pass the Senate. You will not get a single Democratic vote in the Senate. We’re not reviving Jim Crow all over the country. And when the American people hear what exactly it is doing, and what its intent is doing, they’re going to be against it as well,” Schumer said during an appearance on MS NOW’s “Morning Joe” on Thursday.

Super Bowl LX viewers outraged as Black national anthem is performed pregame
Coco Jones performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing” on Sunday ahead of Super Bowl LX between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.

Super Bowl LX was no different, as the song being a part of the pregame festivities drew backlash on X once again.
Jones’ song was performed as fans began to trickle into Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. She was the opener before Green Day made a special performance to honor Super Bowl MVPs over the last 59 Super Bowls.
Jones’ rendition drew a lot of praise, while the NFL’s use of the song was the main sticking point with critics.

Scott Bessent signals noninflationary boom is headed for American wallets
The Trump economy is beginning to deliver, and Americans are poised to see the benefits, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. He pointed to cooling inflation and record market highs as signs that “Main Street is about to prosper.”
Bessent said current market trends reflect growing confidence in President Donald Trump’s policies. He described them as having “set the table” for economic gains in 2026.
It comes as many Democrats have criticized Trump’s economic policies, including concerns about affordability and the potential impact of tariffs on consumer prices.

“The president’s plan is working. The Trump economy is delivering for the American people,” Bessent said on “Sunday Morning Futures.”
TRUMP HAS SET THE STAGE FOR AN AMERICAN COMEBACK AFTER BIDEN’S DISMAL ECONOMY
He noted the economy is experiencing ‘strong growth’ and that inflation is easing toward the Federal Reserve’s 2% target.
Bessent also pointed to record highs across the stock market, including gains in industrial and small-cap stocks. He said those trends typically signal broader economic expansion is on the way.
On Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 50,000 points for the first time. Trump reacted to the milestone on Truth Social, writing, “The Dow Jones Industrial Average just hit 50,000 for the first time in History. CONGRATULATIONS AMERICA!”
TRUMP SPEECH SPARKS OPTIMISM AS ‘GANGBUSTER’ ECONOMY FORECASTED FOR 2026
Bessent said Democrats are overlooking what he described as signs of a strong economic year ahead. He argued the success of Wall Street is an indicator that “Main Street is about to prosper.”
“We are seeing a big cyclical recovery. The president’s agenda set the table in 2025, and now the American people are going to benefit in ’26,” he said.

“The stock market lives in the future, and I think we’re [going to] have very strong economic growth and very strong job gains and very strong real income growth.”
Bessent said those gains will increasingly show up in household finances. Earlier this year, he noted that Americans could see “substantial refunds” and bigger paychecks as the administration’s agenda continues to take effect.
US figure skater faces ‘scary’ backlash after criticizing Trump administration
American Olympic figure skater Amber Glenn said Saturday she will limit her social media intake after she said she received “hate.”
Glenn was critical of the Trump administration in a pre-Olympics press conference earlier in the week, saying it had been a “hard time” for her and members of the LGBT community. It was one of a handful of political remarks U.S. athletes made in the lead-up to the Winter Games.

She received criticism for the remarks, but wrote on her Instagram Stories that the comments she received crossed the line.
“When I chose to utilize one of the amazing things about the United States of America (Freedom of speech) to convey how I feel as an athlete competing for Team USA in a troubling time for many Americans, I am now receiving a scary amount of hate/threats for simply using my voice WHEN ASKED about how I feel,” she wrote in a since-expired post.
TRUMP BLASTS OLYMPIAN OVER COMMENTS ABOUT REPRESENTING US
“I did anticipate this but I am disappointed by it. I will be limiting my time on social media for my own wellbeing for now but I will never stop using my voice for what I believe in.”
Glenn made the post as she shared the comments she made to reporters in Milan, Italy.
“It’s been a hard time for the (LGBTQ) community overall in this administration,” she said, via USA Today. “It isn’t the first time that we’ve had to come together as a community and try and fight for our human rights. And now especially, it’s not just affecting the queer community, but many other communities, and I think that we are able to support each other in a way that we didn’t have to before, and because of that, it’s made us a lot stronger.”
Glenn added that the issue she was talking about was something she wasn’t going to be quiet about.

Nine countries own the world’s nukes — here’s how their arsenals stack up
For the first time in decades, the world’s two largest nuclear superpowers are no longer bound by any treaty limiting their arsenals.
The last remaining nuclear arms control agreement between the U.S. and Russia, known as New START, expired Thursday.
WORLD ENTERS UNCHARTED ERA AS US-RUSSIA NUCLEAR TREATY EXPIRES, OPENING DOOR TO FASTEST ARMS RACE IN DECADES
The lapse removed limits on how many nuclear weapons Washington and Moscow could deploy on missiles, bombers and submarines, and ended the requirement that both sides notify one another whenever nuclear weapons were moved.
The scale of what’s now unconstrained is vast.
Globally, there are more than 12,200 nuclear weapons spread across nine nuclear-armed nations, according to a recent analysis. The United States and Russia alone account for roughly 10,636 of those weapons.

Ahead of the New START agreement’s expiration, President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social, “Rather than extend ‘NEW START’ (a badly negotiated deal by the United States that, aside from everything else, is being grossly violated), we should have our Nuclear Experts work on a new, improved and modernized Treaty that can last long into the future.”
He has previously argued that China should be included in any new agreement with Russia, pointing to Beijing’s growing nuclear arsenal, the world’s third largest after the U.S. and Russia.
Patriots walks into stadium masked and handcuffed before playing in Super Bowl LX
New England Patriots wide receiver Mack Hollins has made it clear that he tries to avoid wearing shoes when he’s away from the football field.
So it was no surprise that he arrived barefoot in Santa Clara, California, a few hours before Super Bowl LX kicked off. But what he was actually wearing may have been more of a surprise.
The 32-year-old walked toward the Patriots locker room wearing a facemask that appeared to be a nod to Hannibal Lecter, along with handcuffs around his wrists. Hollins’ feet were also shackled, and a red jumpsuit had the words “Range 13” on the back.

Hollins, who won a Super Bowl during his rookie season with the Philadelphia Eagles, had Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel’s high school jersey in his hand as he walked through the Levi’s Stadium tunnel. Vrabel is aiming to be the first person to win a Super Bowl title as a player and later as a head coach for the same franchise.
Hollins went through some early warmups on the stadium turf on Sunday while wearing the No. 84 “Warriors” jersey — and, of course, without any cleats on.

While the jersey was a nod, it could have also hinted at the 1979 cult-favorite movie “The Warriors.” The Patriots went undefeated on the road this past regular season and won the AFC Championship game in Denver. In a nod to the film, the idea of persevering away from home developed as a rallying cry for the team this year.
Clips of the 1980s professional wrestling duo, the Road Warriors, became a common theme for Vrabel to show the Patriots this season. Once Vrabel ran out of unseen clips to show the team, he pivoted to the videos from “The Warriors.”
Vrabel, 50, told reporters last week that he was initially surprised the clips resonated with the players. “It’s amazing what sticks. I didn’t think at the time that it would have stuck, but here we are at the end of January, and it’s still sticking,” the former New England linebacker said.
While the Patriots were granted the home team designation for the neutral-site game, the team elected to wear their white road jerseys for Super Bowl LX — keeping in line with their “road warriors” mentality.
Sunday isn’t the first time Hollins’ pregame attire has raised some eyebrows.

Tim Curry says missing out on iconic villain role is one of his ‘great regrets’
Tim Curry has played some of cinema’s most unforgettable characters, but the actor recently revealed that one role he never landed still haunts him.
During an appearance on “The Academy” YouTube channel, Curry, 79, reflected on his career of over five decades, sharing he is still disappointed that he was never even considered for one iconic part.
“One of my great regrets is that I read the script of ‘Silence of the Lambs’ and I desperately wanted to play Hannibal Lecter,” Curry said.
“My agent couldn’t get me in the room, but Tony Hopkins did a great job,” he admitted.
TIM CURRY ADMITS HE WAS ‘DREADING’ WORKING WITH ‘LEGEND’ CO-STAR TOM CRUISE
“The Silence of the Lambs,” which premiered on Valentine’s Day 1991, tells the tale of Clarice Starling, an FBI cadet, who must resort to receiving help from incarcerated cannibal Hannibal Lecter to catch another serial killer. The psychological horror movie starred Anthony Hopkins as Lecter and Jodie Foster as Starling.
The film grossed more than $270 million worldwide and earned five Oscars, including best picture, best actor for Hopkins and best actress for Foster. Hopkins went to reprise the role in Ridley Scott’s sequel movie “Hannibal” (2001), and prequel film “Red Dragon” (2002).
Hopkins, who famously gave a new meaning to fava beans and a nice Chianti, told Variety that he initially thought “The Silence of the Lambs” was a movie for children – at least until he read the script.
“I was in London in 1989, doing a play called ‘M. Butterfly,’” he recalled. “My agent sent the script.”
After 10 pages, Hopkins immediately called his agent back, wanting to know if the offer to star in “Silence of the Lambs” was real.
“This is the best script I’ve ever read,” Hopkins declared at the time.
MACAULAY CULKIN KEEPS HIS ‘HOME ALONE’ IDENTITY SECRET FROM HIS KIDS FOR ADORABLE REASON
During an appearance at the 2015 Austin Film Festival, “The Silence of the Lambs” director Jonathan Demme recalled that Sean Connery was his first choice to play Lecter but the James Bond star rejected the role after reading the script.
“Word came back shortly that he thought it was disgusting and wouldn’t dream of playing that part,” Demme remembered during an interview with Paul Thomas Anderson, via Deadline. “So, great, now we can go to Tony Hopkins.”
Demme explained that he believed Hopkins would be a great fit for the role after being impressed with the actor’s performance as surgeon “Frederick Treves” in the 1980 historical drama “The Elephant Man.”
“It was so easy for me to see that Anthony would be a superb Dr. Lecter because he had been such an amazing good doctor in ‘The Elephant Man,’” Demme said. “He had been as believable a doctor as you can imagine, and he was good. What if you cast Anthony Hopkins in the part of Dr. Lecter, who is not the worst doctor, but he’s a… good doctor turned bad? That was my engine for Anthony Hopkins.”
Though Curry lost out on the chance to play Lecter, the actor has portrayed a string of iconic characters. He rose to cult-icon status as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in 1975’s “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” followed by memorable turns as the malevolent clown Pennywise in the 1990 miniseries “It” and the butler Wadsworth in “Clue.”
Curry also left a lasting impression as the demonic “Darkness” in Legend, Rooster Hannigan in “Annie,” and Long John Silver in “Muppet Treasure Island.” He is also known for his voice work including playing Nigel Thornberry in “The Wild Thornberrys.”
During his appearance on “The Academy” channel, Curry discussed other roles for which he was considered but ultimately did not land.

He noted that he auditioned for the burglar Marv in “Home Alone” after being approached by director Chris Columbus, who had purchased two of Curry’s studio albums.
“I actually met Chris Columbus, who apparently had the only two albums of mine and was a bit of a fan. Nobody else had ever bought them,” he joked.

While the part of Marv ultimately went to Daniel Stern, Columbus cast Curry as the Plaza Hotel concierge Mr. Hector in the sequel “Home Alone: 2.”
Curry remembered working with a young Macaulay Culkin, who played the lead role of Kevin McAllister in both films.

“Mac used to stay up watching late-night movies and fall asleep in the makeup chair,” he recalled. “I liked him. He was a very nice kid.”
Before Jeremy Irons was cast, Curry was considered for the role of the villainous lion Scar in the mega-hit 1994 Disney animated movie “The Lion King.”
“That would have been nice,” Curry said.
