Liberal sheriff goes viral after being stumped by ‘fifth-grade’ civics question

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

North Carolina Republican state Rep. Allen Chesser said he was taken by surprise when a Democratic sheriff who has long opposed cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) could not answer a basic question about how the government works.

A North Carolina House Oversight Committee hearing spurred on by the recent killing of a young Ukrainian woman, Iryna Zarutska, in Charlotte, took an unexpected turn when Chesser asked Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden, “What branch of government do you operate under?”

McFadden, who is the top law enforcement officer in the county where Zarutska was killed, simply answered, “Mecklenburg County,” prompting Chesser to repeat, “What branch of government do you operate under, sheriff?”

The sheriff answered, “The Constitution of the United States,” to which Chesser responded, “That is what establishes the branches of government; I’m asking what branch you fall under.”

After McFadden answered, “Mecklenburg County” again, Chesser remarked, “This is not where I was anticipating getting stuck. Um, are you aware of how many branches of government there are?” The sheriff quickly shot back, “No.”

CHARLOTTE LIGHT-RAIL STABBING MURDER SPURS LANDMARK CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM FROM NORTH CAROLINA REPUBLICANS

After a long pause, Chesser continued, “For the sake of debate, let’s say there are three branches of government: legislative, executive, judicial. Of those three, which do you fall under?”

The sheriff answered, “I believe I fall under the last one … judicial.”

“You are incorrect, sir. You fall under the executive,” said Chesser.

After this, Chesser continued to press McFadden about how he reconciles his responsibility as an officer under the executive branch to enforce the law with his opposition to cooperation with ICE. Chesser asked McFadden how he reconciled his responsibility with a previous statement in which the sheriff said, “We do not have a role in enforcement whatsoever, we do not have to follow the rules and the laws that are governed by our lawmakers in Raleigh.”

The sheriff said that Chesser was taking his quote out of context, saying it was strictly in reference to immigration enforcement.

Though declining to offer more context on the statement, McFadden affirmed his office is now abiding by state law requiring cooperation with ICE, saying, “We follow the law, when the law is produced, we follow the law.”

HOUSE DEM EXPLODES ON TOP TRUMP IMMIGRATION OFFICIAL, SAYS HE ‘BETTER HOPE’ FOR PARDON FROM PRESIDENT

In an interview with Fox News Digital the day after the hearing, Chesser, who is an Army veteran and former police officer, said that, “Obviously, those weren’t the cache of questions that I was thinking we were going to get him on.”

“I had several statements that he had made to the media and to the local press and in different interviews that kind of conflicted with some of the testimony that he provided yesterday about following the law. We made it to [only] one of those statements because we got held up on what I thought was baseline, just kind of setting a baseline of how we were to establish that his role is to enforce the law,” he explained, adding, “I was not expecting to have to get into a fifth-grade civics lesson with a duly elected sheriff.”

He said that McFadden has “decided to make himself kind of a centerpiece in the refusal to enforce immigration law here in North Carolina, adding, “It’s not so much the refusal to enforce immigration law, but it’s the refusal to enforce state law that says he must cooperate with ICE and ICE detainers when people are in custody in his facilities.”

WHO IS IRYNA ZARUTSKA, UKRAINIAN REFUGEE KILLED IN CHARLOTTE TRAIN ATTACK?

“Last summer, we had the unfortunate death of a young Ukrainian national that had sought refuge in our country and in our state,” Chesser went on. “I think that all North Carolinians, and all people who find themselves in North Carolina, should be able to count on one thing when it comes to public safety, and that is whether or not you are safe and whether or not the law will be enforced is not dependent on what county you find yourself in.”

“North Carolina is a safe state for all the people who choose to come here, and that is the point of the Oversight Committee [hearing] that we were having was, making sure that the law is equally applied and fairly applied across all imaginary lines in our state,” he said.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

At least nine people were killed in connection with a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, according to officials, who added that the suspect was also found dead.

The Tumbler Ridge Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed to Fox News Digital that officers responded to reports of an active shooter at the school at 1:20 p.m. local time Tuesday. While searching the school, officers found six victims dead from gunshot wounds and a person believed to be the suspect dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury.

Two victims were airlifted to a hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries, police said, and a third victim died while being transported to the hospital.

During the investigation, police identified a secondary location believed to be connected to the incident, where two additional victims were found dead inside a residence.

Approximately 25 others with non-life-threatening injuries were taken for assessment at the local medical center, police said.

“This was a rapidly evolving and dynamic situation, and the swift cooperation from the school, first responders, and the community played a critical role in our response,” Superintendent Ken Floyd, North District Commander, said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic incident. This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community, and we are grateful for the cooperation shown as officers continue their work to advance the investigation.”

All remaining students and staff were safely evacuated from the school, police said.

Police do not believe there are any additional suspects or ongoing threat to the public.

The identity of the suspected shooter has not been released and police have not identified a possible motive. Officials did not say whether the shooter had any connection to the school.

Floyd confirmed the shooter was the same individual described in a police alert issued earlier in the day as a “female in a dress with brown hair.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was devastated by the horrific shootings.

“My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these horrific acts of violence. I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens. Our ability to come together in crisis is the best of our country — our empathy, our unity, and our compassion for each other,” he wrote on X.

The RCMP initially confirmed an active shooter incident Tuesday at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, with at least one suspect found dead.

Additional police resources were deployed to the area from neighboring detachments, along with the North District Emergency Response Team.

In a message posted to its website, the Peace River South School District said it was “aware of a lockdown and secure and hold at Tumbler Ridge Secondary and Tumbler Ridge Elementary schools.”

“We are asking people to have patience as we work with the RCMP,” school officials wrote.

Larry Neufeld, who represents Peace River South in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, released a statement on social media noting he was heading to the scene.

“I am aware of the active shooter situation currently unfolding in Tumbler Ridge, and my thoughts are with residents as this situation continues to develop,” Neufeld wrote. “I have been in direct contact with the Solicitor General to receive updates and to ensure all necessary provincial resources are being made available to support local law enforcement and emergency responders.

“Public safety is the absolute priority. I urge everyone in the area to follow RCMP instructions, remain sheltered, and rely only on official updates,” he continued. “I am leaving Victoria immediately to return to my riding to be on the ground and available to support the community in any way needed. I will continue to stay closely engaged as this situation evolves.”

American-born Olympian competing for China under fire after Trump comments

American-born Team China Olympic skier Eileen Gu came under immense scrutiny on social media this week after making comments about President Donald Trump’s recent criticism of U.S. Olympian Hunter Hess.

Gu, who was born in San Francisco, is the highest-paid Winter Olympic athlete in the world, making an estimated $23 million in 2025 alone amid partnerships with Chinese companies, including the Bank of China, and western companies. Gu has said she represents China for her mother, who was born there.

Gu has never spoken out publicly against China’s alleged human rights abuses, including the nation’s alleged systematic campaign of repression against Uyghurs and other predominantly Muslim ethnic minorities in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

However, Gu has commented on Trump’s criticism of Hess for expressing “mixed emotions” about representing the U.S. in Milan Cortina.

“I’m sorry that the headline that is eclipsing the Olympics has to be something so unrelated to the spirit of the Games. It really runs contrary to everything the Olympics should be,” Gu told reporters Monday.

“The whole point of sport is to bring people together. … One of the very few common languages, that of the human body, that of the human spirit, the competitive spirit, the capacity to break not only records, but especially in our sport, literally the human limit. How wonderful is that?”

Gu also claimed she had been “caught in the crossfire” herself.

“As someone who has got caught in the crossfire before, I feel sorry for the athletes,” Gu said. “I hope that they can ski to their very best.”

US COULD BE ‘GLOBAL VILLAIN’ OF WINTER OLYMPICS, CNN HOST AND SPORTS WRITER SUGGEST

Gu’s comments have incited backlash on social media, with many critics pointing out that Gu has never spoken out against China for its alleged human rights violations.

Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom blasted Gu in a lengthy X post, calling her a “traitor.”

“Eileen Gu is a traitor. She was born in America, raised in America, lives in America, and chose to compete against her own country for the worst human rights abuser on the planet, China. She built her fame in a free country, then chose to represent an authoritarian regime while cashing in on endorsements linked by watchdog groups to mass detention and forced labor camps. When human rights come up, she disappears,” Kanter wrote.

“That’s not neutrality. That’s a choice. She chose to play for a country responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of its own people and that is running concentration camps right now, instead of the country where she was born and given opportunity.”

Hudson Institute senior fellow Michael Sobolik also pointed out Gu’s silence on China’s alleged persecution of Uyghurs and the political imprisonment of individuals who oppose Xi Jinping.

“Listen, it’s fine for athletes to criticize the U.S. president. It also isn’t that interesting because it happens all the time. What’s interesting about this story … is that Eileen Gu is an American skier competing for China. No mention about whether the CCP’s genocide of Uyghurs ‘runs contrary to everything the Olympics should be.’ No criticism of Xi Jinping for the imprisonment of Jimmy Lai, Pastor Ezra Jin, Gulshan Abbas, or China’s many other political prisoners,” Sobolik wrote on X.

“If you criticize America but won’t say a word about the CCP, that says a lot about you. If you’re an American athlete that leverages the freedom this country has given you to represent an authoritarian regime, that says even more.”

Republican communications specialist Matt Whitlock echoed similar criticism of Gu in an X post.

“Can’t imagine a worse voice on this topic than an athlete who threw away her American citizenship for Chinese Communist Party endorsement deals. Does Eileen Gu have any criticism for Xi Jinping for genocide, slavery, and arresting dissenters?” Whitlock wrote.

Several other X users spoke out against Gu.

Trump has been one of the most discussed figures at this year’s Winter Olympics, and several athletes have made suggestive criticisms of his handling of the U.S., including Hess.

Trump made a scathing post on social media, calling Hess a “real loser.”

“U.S. Olympic Skier, Hunter Hess, a real Loser, says he doesn’t represent his Country in the current Winter Olympics,” he wrote.

“If that’s the case, he shouldn’t have tried out for the Team, and it’s too bad he’s on it. Very hard to root for someone like this. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Hess originally said of representing the U.S., “It brings up mixed emotions to represent the U.S. right now, I think. It’s a little hard. There’s obviously a lot going on that I’m not the biggest fan of, and I think a lot of people aren’t.

“I think, for me, it’s more I’m representing my friends and family back home, the people that represented it before me, all the things that I believe are good about the U.S. If it aligns with my moral values, I feel like I’m representing it. Just because I’m wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the U.S.

“I just kind of want to do it for my friends and my family and the people that support me getting here.”

Democratic lawmakers avoid charges after urging troops to refuse illegal orders

A grand jury in the nation’s capital on Tuesday refused the Justice Department‘s attempt to indict a group of Democratic lawmakers who encouraged U.S. military members to ignore “illegal” orders in a video posted online.

The DOJ opened an investigation into the video featuring six Democratic lawmakers calling on troops and members of the intelligence community to defy illegal orders from the federal government. The lawmakers all served in the military or at intelligence agencies.

The lawmakers in the video were Sens. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan and Mark Kelly of Arizona, as well as Reps. Chris Deluzio and Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania, Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire and Jason Crow of Colorado.

“This administration is pitting our uniformed military and intelligence community professionals against American citizens,” the lawmakers said in the video. “Like us, you all swore an oath to protect and defend this Constitution. Right now, the threats coming to our Constitution aren’t just coming from abroad but from right here at home. Our laws are clear. You can refuse illegal orders. You must refuse illegal orders. No one has to carry out orders that violate the law or our Constitution.”

DEM SENATOR SAYS SHE’S UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION OVER ‘UNLAWFUL ORDERS’ VIDEO

Grand jurors declined to sign off on charges against the lawmakers, according to The Associated Press. It was not immediately clear whether prosecutors had pursued indictments against all six lawmakers or what charges they attempted to bring.

Prosecutors could still attempt to secure an indictment against the Democrats.

President Donald Trump had accused the lawmakers of being “traitors” who engaged in “sedition at the highest level” and “should be in jail.” He even suggested they should be executed over the video, although he later attempted to walk that comment back.

Slotkin, who previously worked at the CIA and Defense Department, was targeted with a bomb threat just days after the clip and Trump’s subsequent statements suggesting the Democrats be executed.

SEN MARK KELLY DIGS IN ON ‘ILLEGAL ORDERS’ STANCE, TELLS JIMMY KIMMEL HE’S ‘NOT BACKING DOWN’

“Tonight we can score one for the Constitution, our freedom of speech, and the rule of law,” Slotkin said in a statement on Tuesday. “But today wasn’t just an embarrassing day for the Administration. It was another sad day for our country.”

Kelly, a former Navy pilot, called the attempt to bring charges an “outrageous abuse of power by Donald Trump and his lackeys.”

“Donald Trump wants every American to be too scared to speak out against him,” Kelly said on X. “The most patriotic thing any of us can do is not back down.”

In November, the Pentagon launched an investigation into Kelly, pointing to a federal law that allows retired service members to be recalled to active duty on orders of the secretary for possible court-martial or other punishment.

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth has censured Kelly and is attempting to retroactively demote Kelly from his retired rank of captain over his participation in the video, which affirms that refusing unlawful orders is a standard part of military protocol.

“As a retired Navy Captain who is still receiving a military pension, Captain Kelly knows he is still accountable to military justice,” Hegseth wrote in an X post on Jan. 5.

Kelly responded by suing Hegseth to block those proceedings, which he called an unconstitutional act of retribution.

During a hearing last week, a judge appeared to be skeptical of key arguments that a government attorney made in defense of Hegseth’s move last month to censure the Arizona senator.

Illinois city hands out large payments to Black residents with reparations program

Evanston, Illinois. will issue $25,000 to 44 residents in reparations payments, the City’s Reparations Committee has announced.

Established in 2019 and approved by the City Council in 2021, the program issues $25,000 direct cash payments to Black residents and descendants of Black residents who lived in Evanston between 1919 and 1969.

Evanston was the first city in the nation to pass a reparations plan, pledging $10 million over a decade to Black residents.

The payments are intended to cover housing expenses, Evanston official Cynthia Vargas told the Chicago Tribune.

SAN FRANCISCO SUED OVER REPARATIONS FUND ALLEGING UNLAWFUL USE OF TAXPAYER MONEY

Tasheik Kerr, assistant to the city manager, said during a meeting last week the residents will be contacted to inform them their payments are on the way over the next few weeks.

According to a city memo, the fund had received $276,588 from Evanston’s real estate transfer tax. The committee discussed taxing Delta-8 THC products to sustain funding in the future.

Ald. Krissie Harris recognized that the tax would not significantly increase revenue, though it would “help keep moving that number forward” in the reparations process.

CHICAGO MAYOR BRANDON JOHNSON TAKES JAB AT CLARENCE THOMAS WHILE DEFENDING CITY’S REPARATIONS TASK FORCE

“It’s really important for people to understand we pay as we have the money, and it’s not that we’re withholding from paying everyone,” Harris said, according to The Daily Northwestern. “It’s just we have to accumulate the funds to make sure we can pay.”

The reparations fund did not receive any philanthropic donations this year as of Jan. 31, so the fund is primarily supported by a cannabis sales tax and real estate tax money.

MARYLAND CHURCH TO ISSUE REPARATIONS GRANTS TO ‘BUILD UP BLACK COMMUNITIES’ DUE TO ‘SYSTEMIC RACISM’

Judicial Watch filed a lawsuit against Evanston‘s reparations program last year due to its use of race as an eligibility requirement for the program. The watchdog group alleges that the program violates the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment.

“To date, Evanston has awarded over $6,350,000 to 254 individuals based on their race. The city must be stopped before it spends even more money on this clearly discriminatory and unconstitutional reparations program,” Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said at the time.

Similar calls for reparations have been gaining traction in the United States, as measures are being introduced in state legislatures and being pushed by grassroots activists. Municipalities and states recently launched exploratory efforts on the matter, forming committees to examine the effect of slavery to calculate how compensation would be dispensed.

The committee did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

FAA temporarily halts all flights at international airport for ‘special security reasons’

The Federal Aviation Administration has grounded all flights to and from El Paso International Airport in Texas for the next 10 days, the agency announced Wednesday.

All flights to and from El Paso are grounded, including commercial, cargo and general aviation. The restriction is effective from February 10 at 11:30 p.m. MST to February 20 at 11:30 p.m. MST. The FAA cited “special security reasons” for the closure, but did not elaborate.

The no-fly restriction applies to airspace over El Paso as well as nearby Santa Teresa, New Mexico.

The FAA has classified the airspace as “national defense airspace,” with the notification saying deadly force could be used on craft violating the airspace if they are deemed to pose “an imminent security threat.”

El Paso airport issued a statement confirming the closure on Wednesday.

“Travelers should contact their airlines to get the most up-to-date flight status information,” it said in a statement.

The announcement comes just days after multiple airlines suspended flights to Cuba on Monday following warnings that the island is running low on jet fuel. The warnings cite President Donald Trump’s tariff threats on oil shipments to the communist country.

At least three Canadian carriers, including the country’s largest airline, Air Canada, said aviation fuel is expected to be unavailable for commercial use at airports starting this week.

Other Canadian airlines, including low-cost carrier WestJet and leisure airline Air Transat, also canceled flights due to anticipated fuel shortages.

‘Bachelor’ star admits to years of ‘secret sexual sin’: ‘I was living this double life’

The Bachelor” star Madison Prewett is finally coming clean after years of living in “secret sexual sin.”

On Tuesday’s episode of “The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast,” Prewett spoke candidly about the internal struggles she began facing in middle school after publicly presenting herself as someone waiting until marriage, while privately grappling with pornography use and masturbation.

“Around 13, 14, I got introduced to pornography at a young age by a friend. That started a long journey and battle for me with porn and masturbation. That created a lot of shame and secrecy in my life. I lived my life very much in this: ‘I’m saving myself for marriage, I have my virgin card, I’m following God,’” Prewett began.

“And on the outside it looked like everything was fine, but behind closed doors I was living this double life of living in constant secret sin, secret sexual sin, and not confessing it to anybody, which only led to more sin and more shame, and it felt like this never-ending cycle that I didn’t know how to get out of,” she continued.

CANDACE CAMERON BURE SAYS FAITH HEALED ‘DEEP BROKENNESS’ IN HER NEARLY 30-YEAR MARRIAGE

Prewett told Candice Cameron Bure that she lived in secret sin her entire middle and high school years, but was able to open up about her struggles once she went to college.

“Behind closed doors I was living this double life of living in constant secret sin, secret sexual sin, and not confessing it to anybody.”

— Madison Prewett

“I finally was able to break free from that addiction and that cycle. I think a lot of times we think with our sin, that if we confess it or if we finally tell someone about it, they will judge us, people will think we’re gross, they will think we are a bad Christian. If we say that, maybe they won’t want to be my friend anymore,” the 29-year-old admitted.

Prewett shared that for her, confessing her sin allowed herself to feel “lighter” and immediate relief. To this day, the reality TV alum doesn’t allow herself to keep her sin bottled up and encourages others to “just confess” what they’ve been struggling with.

“What you’ll notice is that most of the time when you share that secret sin or that shameful thing — that maybe you didn’t even do, maybe it was done to you, and it’s been holding you back for so long — and you finally confess that to somebody, you know whether it’s a porn addiction or an abortion or something that someone took advantage of you,” she began.

Prewett continued, “I think a lot of times it’s equated to sexuality — not always but a lot of times — and confessing that thing immediately, you feel this relief and you feel this freedom. That was really what that journey was like for me. Even to this day, having moments of shame popping back up, immediately just confess it and get it into the light and share it with a friend.”

In June, Prewett first revealed her previous masturbation and porn addiction on the “Stay True” podcast.

“Thankfully, by the grace of God and by the power of godly community and people around me, I have been free from porn and masturbation for — I don’t even know — 10 years,” Prewett said at the time.

“But that was something that enslaved me and marked me for so long. … No matter how much I loved Jesus, I could not shake that sin. I could not break free from porn and masturbation.”

Prewett rose to fame as runner-up on Peter Weber’s season of “The Bachelor” in 2020. In July 2022, Prewett married pastor Grant Troutt. The couple welcomed their daughter Hosanna in Jan. 2025.
