Sheriff defies judge’s order to release repeat offender with 35 arrests
A Las Vegas sheriff is refusing to release a repeat offender with 35 arrests despite a judge’s order, sparking a legal showdown now headed to the Nevada Supreme Court over who decides if a suspect is too dangerous to leave jail.
The dispute began after Las Vegas Justice Court Judge Eric Goodman ordered Joshua Sanchez-Lopez released on electronic monitoring, a program that allows defendants to leave jail while wearing a GPS ankle bracelet, according to KLAS.
But law enforcement officials declined to release Sanchez-Lopez, arguing his criminal history makes him too dangerous to supervise in the community.
Sanchez-Lopez, 36, is a felon whose record includes 35 arrests and prior prison time for drug and involuntary manslaughter charges, according to records cited by KLAS.

Police say his past behavior raises serious concerns. In one 2020 arrest, Sanchez-Lopez allegedly ran from officers while armed with a gun, later posting on Snapchat showing his ankle monitor and saying he “got chased again,” according to documents cited by KLAS.
Officials say cases like that are exactly why the sheriff’s office believes it should have the final say on whether someone can be placed in the electronic monitoring program.
“We have to take a look at that and say, ‘Is this somebody who our electronic supervision program can monitor safely in the community?’” Mike Dickerson, assistant general counsel for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, told KLAS. “This is an issue of public safety.”

The case stems from Sanchez-Lopez’s January arrest on a charge of grand larceny of a motor vehicle.
During a court hearing, Goodman set bail at $25,000 and ordered that Sanchez-Lopez be placed on “high-level” electronic monitoring, essentially house arrest, if he posted bond, KLAS reported.

Authorities refused, citing prior bench warrants, failures to appear in court and violations of the department’s monitoring program, according to the outlet.
When police declined to release him, Goodman ordered the department to comply and warned officials they could face contempt sanctions if they did not, the outlet reported.
“When someone has dozens of prior arrests and a history of violations, that raises serious concerns about whether they can safely be released into the community,” said David Moody, a retired LVMPD detective and state president of FOP in Nevada. “From a law enforcement perspective, public safety has to come first.”

Now the sheriff’s office is asking the Nevada Supreme Court to step in, arguing state law gives Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill the authority to determine whether supervising someone outside jail would pose an unreasonable risk to public safety.
“Sheriff McMahill will not violate the law to appease the Las Vegas Justice Court and let out people who he deems to be dangerous,” the department said in a statement.
Steve Grammas, president of the Las Vegas Police Protective Association, told Fox News Digital the dispute ultimately comes down to who the law says controls electronic monitoring.
“Statutorily, it’s very clear the sheriff decides whether someone can be placed on supervised monitoring,” Grammas said. “It’s his jail and his supervision, so that decision rests with him.”
Grammas said the case has drawn attention because many people view it as a public safety issue involving a repeat offender with a long arrest record.

Sanchez-Lopez’s attorney, however, argues the sheriff is overstepping his authority.
“Metro’s argument is flat wrong,” public defender P. David Westbrook said in a statement to KLAS. “It is the job of the elected judge to decide whether someone charged with a crime should be released and under what conditions.”

The dispute has also drawn attention online, where some commentators praised the sheriff for refusing to release the defendant.
The conservative social media account Libs of TikTok posted about the case on X, calling Sanchez-Lopez a “violent career criminal” and writing, “Kudos to this sheriff!”
The Nevada Republican Club also weighed in, writing, “That’s our Sheriff. We stand behind him all day long.”

Sigal Chattah, the U.S. attorney for the District of Nevada, also praised the sheriff, writing on X: “Couldn’t be more proud to call this guy MY SHERIFF… bow down America to King Kevin.”
The Nevada Supreme Court has not yet scheduled a hearing on the petition.
Fox News Digital reached out to Sanchez-Lopez’s attorney, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Clark County District Attorney’s Office for comment. Goodman declined to comment, citing the pending case.

The liberal late-night host referred to first lady Melania Trump’s documentary, “Melania,” which was just released in January, and mocked the president: “Oh, man, is he going to be mad his wife wasn’t nominated for this.”

March Madness hopes in jeopardy as Alabama guard nabbed in drug bust before tournament
Just days before their start in the NCAA Tournament, the Alabama Crimson Tide is dealing with an off-court legal issue with one of its starting players.
Guard Aden Holloway was arrested on Monday for possession of marijuana, said Stephanie Taylor, a Tuscaloosa Police Department spokesperson, to the New York Post.
The spokesperson said more than a pound of marijuana, paraphernalia and cash were found after agents with the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force conducted a search of a residence on Monday morning.

Holloway, 21, was arrested and charged with first-degree possession of marijuana and failure to affix a tax stamp. He was transported to Tuscaloosa County jail on Monday at 9:48 a.m. and later released at 10:45 a.m. His bond was $5,000.
It is currently unclear if the Crimson Tide will be disciplining Holloway before they take on Hofstra in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday in Tampa, Florida.

The Crimson Tide went 23-9 this season, earning them a No. 4 seed in the Midwest Region, where they hope to get off on the right foot against the No. 13 Pride, which went 24-10 this year, at Benchmark International Arena.
Holloway was a key piece of Alabama’s success this season, averaging 16.8 points per game as the team’s second-leading scorer. His last game, an SEC Tournament quarterfinals loss to Ole Miss last Friday, saw him drop 18 points in the 80-79 defeat.
The Crimson Tide come into the tournament as one of the more successful squads of late, winning nine of their last 11 games. This is the time of year to get hot, and Holloway has played a part in that recent stretch.
It’s worth noting that, as of June 2024, the NCAA Division I Council removed marijuana from its banned substances list for championships and postseason football.
Holloway is in his third season with the Crimson Tide, where he returned to the starting role he had during his freshman year in the 2023-24 campaign.

Holloway shot 48.1% from the field, as well as 43.8% from three-point territory, while dishing out 3.8 assists and grabbing 2.8 rebounds per game.
Poll reveals stunning reversal as US now split on Israel vs Palestinians
Americans’ opinions regarding Israel have dramatically soured in recent years, fueled by a surge in negative views among Democrats and independents, according to a new national poll.
The results of the survey, by NBC News, come amid sharp political debates among Democrats over support for Israel two and a half years after the start of the war between Israelis and Hamas in Gaza.
Just 32% of Americans view Israel positively, with 39% seeing the Jewish state in a negative light, according to the poll, which was conducted Feb. 27-March 2. That’s a sea change from three years ago, when Americans held a positive view of Israel by a 47%-34% margin.
Much of that decline in positive views is due to Democrats and independents, according to the survey.

Democrats were divided in 2023, with 34% viewing Israel positively and 35% negatively. Now, the poll indicates just 13% of Democrats hold a positive view of Israel, with 57% seeing it in a negative light.
And independents went from 40%-22% positive-negative to 21%-48%.
But according to the NBC News poll, Republican views of Israel have only declined slightly, from 63%-12% positive-negative in 2023 to 54%-18% now.

The survey, which was conducted as the U.S. and Israel began their strikes on Iran, also indicates Americans are now split on whether they are more sympathetic to Israel or the Palestinians.
Americans, who by a 45%-13% margin were more sympathetic to Israel in 2013, are now divided, with 40% more sympathetic to Israel and 39% more sympathetic to the Palestinians.
There’s been a massive switch among Democrats, from more sympathetic to Israel 34%-18% margin in 2013 to more sympathetic to Palestinians by a 67%-17% margin now.
SHARP PARTISAN DIVIDE EMERGES OVER IRAN STRIKE, TRUMP’S STRATEGY: POLLS
Independents went from more sympathetic to Israel by a 37%-10% margin 13 years ago to more sympathetic to Palestinians by a 37%-27% margin now.
But Republicans, according to the poll, stayed much more sympathetic to Israel, from a 67%-8% margin in 2013 to a 69%-13% margin now.
The poll also spotlights a generational divide, with a greater deterioration of positive views and sympathies for Israel among younger Americans.
Roughly 1,200 people were killed during the October 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel, with 251 captured.

First case of severe mpox disease reported in major city: ‘Life-threatening’
The first case of severe mpox (formerly monkeypox) has been identified in New York City, according to an advisory issued by the NYC Health Department.
One resident has tested positive for mpox clade I, one of the two main genetic groups (clades) of the mpox virus, which causes the illness.
“Clade I causes more severe symptoms and can be life-threatening,” Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News senior medical analyst, told Fox News Digital. “It spreads via direct contact or sex, and kissing, and very close respiratory droplets, but not over longer distances by respiratory spread.”

Clade II was the strain that caused a 2022 global outbreak, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Survival rates for this type are more than 99.9%.
Clade I, which was responsible for the 2024 outbreak in the DRC and Africa, is known to cause more severe illness and deaths.
The New York City patient recently traveled out of the country, the advisory states. “This appears to have come here from travel and has not spread locally,” Siegel noted.

There is no known local transmission of mpox clade I in New York City and the risk remains low for local residents, according to NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin.
“The NYC Health Department recommends that New Yorkers who are at risk for mpox receive and complete the two-dose vaccine series that works to prevent mpox,” he said in a statement.
To help prevent transmission, the CDC recommends vaccination for men who are gay, bisexual or have sex with men, are age 18 or older, and have other specific risks. Those who plan to travel to areas where clade I mpox is spreading should also seek the vaccine.

People who may have been in close contact with an infected person should get the vaccine within 14 days.
As with other viral infections, those who are immunocompromised or very young are at the greatest risk of severe infection.

Vaccination can help reduce the chances of infection and also makes symptoms less severe, according to experts. The two-dose JYNNEOS vaccine is the most common type of protection. Those who have had mpox do not need to be vaccinated.
Mpox symptoms include a sometimes painful, blistery rash on various parts of the body, fever, chills, exhaustion, muscle aches, headache, swollen lymph nodes and respiratory symptoms, according to the CDC. These symptoms usually emerge one to three weeks after exposure.

In rare cases, mpox can lead to eye infections, severe rash, painful skin lesions and neurological problems.
Treatment for mpox involves supportive care to manage symptoms. In severe cases, patients may receive TPOXX (tecovirimat), an antiviral medication used to treat infections caused by viruses related to smallpox, including mpox, Siegel noted.

Even a former Biden White House advisor is calling out Democratic-run cities run amok with crime after a chaotic “juvenile takeover” disrupted Washington, D.C.’s upscale Navy Yard neighborhood Saturday night, as hundreds of teens flooded the area, sparking fights, robberies and gunfire.
“Blue cities need to wake up,” Yemisi Egbewole wrote Sunday on X, responding to social media video showing the melee. “Tolerating this behavior is unfair to the residents who live here and unfair to the kids themselves.”
The disturbance comes just days after the district established a temporary juvenile curfew zone in the same Navy Yard area. While a citywide curfew for minors begins at 11 p.m., critics say teen “takeovers” continue to plague the city.
“The behavior displayed [Saturday] night in Navy Yard cannot be tolerated, and we are very thankful that no one was seriously injured,” interim Metropolitan Chief of Police Jeffery W. Carroll, a Mayor Muriel Bowser appointee, told WUSA 9 on Sunday.

Police say the chaos continued shortly after, when another group of teens jumped and robbed two more juveniles near New Jersey Avenue and M Street. The victims later went to a hospital with injuries.
At about 10:34 p.m., the Secret Service stopped a rideshare vehicle after spotting a suspect matching a police description. A 16-year-old was arrested after officers recovered a firearm he allegedly tried to discard.

In total, two juveniles were arrested and two firearms recovered. Despite the violence, authorities say no serious injuries were reported.

Riley Green gets five stitches after fan hurls phone at head during show
Riley Green was left bleeding after a disgruntled fan threw a phone at him onstage.
In a video posted to social media, the country star was caught off guard while performing at Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne, Australia, when a phone was suddenly thrown from the crowd, clipping the musician in the ear.
A shocked Green paused the show and asked his crew to turn the house lights on in an effort to identify the thrower. With the help of the crowd, Green pointed to the fan and threw him out of the show.
