Education Department loses biggest budget item in Trump shutdown push
The Department of Education (ED) just took a big step closer to shutting down.
The Trump administration announced on Thursday an interagency agreement between the ED and the Treasury to move student lending operations to the Treasury, which will “assume operational responsibility for collecting on defaulted Federal student loan debt and provide operational support to ED’s efforts to return borrowers to repayment,” the ED said in a release.
“I think we’ve been very clear about this last week that this is a multiphase process,” Nicholas Kent, Undersecretary of Education, told Fox News Digital on Monday.
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO PULL BACK RACE-BASED CRITERIA IN FEDERAL GRANTS
Throughout the 2024 campaign, then-candidate Donald Trump promised to eliminate the Department of Education and signed an executive order directing his administration to start disbanding it.
“The Secretary has been on the record saying that these interagency agreements are proof of concept, that we want to show Congress, that we want to show families, we want to show moms and dads and families that the Department of Education does not need to be here for federal grant aid and federal student loans to continue flowing to borrowers,” Kent said.
Andrew Gillen of the Cato Institute told Fox News Digital that this particular shift in responsibilities is significant because previous interagency agreements have been “relatively small.”
“Whereas this student loan move–this is the biggest staffing and the biggest budgetary component of the Department of Education. So, if it’s sent over to Treasury, this really does indicate that this is moving a substantial portion of the Department of Education elsewhere,” Gillen said.
“I think that that’s absolutely right,” Kent said in agreement with Gillen’s analysis. “Characterizing it as the next and largest step toward winding down the Department of Education is absolutely the right way to think about it.”
This interagency agreement follows the Trump administration’s effort to shift power from a handful of its offices and programs to other federal agencies as it works to dissolve the federal department completely.
TRUMP ADMIN CUTS RED TAPE AS IOWA JOINS EFFORT TO RETURN EDUCATION TO STATES
“Cutting through layers of red tape in Washington is one essential piece of our final mission,” Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said in a press release. “As we partner with these agencies to improve federal programs, we will continue to gather best practices in each state through our 50-state tour, empower local leaders in K-12 education, restore excellence to higher education, and work with Congress to codify these reforms.”
The department added that shifting student loan responsibilities to the Treasury will “mitigate the continuing fallout and cost to taxpayers from the Biden Administration’s mismanagement of the Federal student loan portfolio, and facilitate the return of defaulted borrowers to repayment.”
The total of student loans owed is at nearly $1.7 trillion, according to the department. It said less than 40% of borrowers arrange a repayment plan and almost 25% of them are in default.
“This will benefit students by streamlining the aid application and student loan repayment processes and save taxpayers money by reducing losses on student loans,” Gillen told Fox News Digital. “Once the move is complete, Education’s biggest budgetary and staffing requirements will be handled elsewhere, which will make it much more feasible to shut down the Department of Education.”
MCMAHON RECOUNTS STORY OF REASSURING PARENT OF SPECIAL NEEDS THAT FUNDING WILL CONTINUE AS DEPARTMENT SHRINKS
The ED has made “historic progress in such a short period of time,” according to Kent.
“In over a year, we have reduced the size of the department by over 40%. We have entered into 10 interagency agreements. We have done multiple staff details for other agencies where staff who are in the department are literally physically sitting at other agencies,” he said. “We are showing Congress and others that this proof of concept works and that we want to continue to work with Congress to memorialize these changes in legislation and with the ultimate goal of closing down the department and putting ourselves out of a job.”

Pritzker attacks Trump after Venezuelan allegedly kills student in Illinois
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker office broke its silence on the murder of Loyola University freshman Sheridan Gorman, who was allegedly killed by Venezuelan national Jose Medina-Medina, telling Fox News Digital they are grieving the young woman’s death and that President Donald Trump is wrongly politicizing tragedies like it.
Sheridan Gorman, an 18-year-old from Yorktown Heights, New York, was shot and killed while admiring the aurora borealis along Lake Michigan, with her death initially leading to outrage from everywhere but Springfield.
“Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and Loyola University community grieving the senseless murder of Sheridan Gorman,” Pritzker’s office told Fox News Digital in a statement Monday, after as recently as 11 p.m. CT Sunday, the Hyatt Hotels heir remained mum to an inquiry by the Chicago Sun-Times.
“Violent crime has no place in our streets, and we expect the alleged perpetrator to be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” Pritzker’s office added.
TRUMP ADMIN SUES ILLINOIS GOV. PRITZKER OVER LAWS SHIELDING MIGRANTS FROM COURTHOUSE ARRESTS
“The Trump administration needs to stop politicizing heinous tragedies and instead focus on real solutions, like reinstating federal funds to prevent violence that support our public safety efforts.”
Pritzker, however, did not respond to a second question on whether he would instruct Illinois authorities to abide by the Laken Riley Act and hold illegal immigrants, including Medina-Medina, until the feds can pick them up.
Pritzker has received criticism since the Thursday murder for his quick response to the federal agent-involved killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minneapolis, and for the fact that he presides over a state that has a policy preventing full cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security.
ICE issued a detainer for Medina-Medina over the weekend, but Chicago is a sanctuary jurisdiction and the state enforces the TRUST Act – a law passed through the Democratic-majority legislature in Springfield and signed by then-Gov. Bruce Rauner, a Republican
The TRUST Act prevents state and local cooperation with federal immigration authorities, stating that a suspect or convict cannot be held for federal transfer past his scheduled release date unless presented with a federal criminal warrant.
GOV. PRITZKER IGNORED MY LETTER — AFTER HIS SANCTUARY POLICIES KILLED MY DAUGHTER
The Laken Riley Act, drafted by Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., and signed by Trump, mandates that an illegal immigrant be held for federal transfer even if the individual is only accused and not yet convicted of a crime.
Medina-Medina is charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated discharge of a weapon and aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon.
He was picked up for shoplifting several years ago, which has brought the central issue of the Laken Riley Act into the discussion surrounding the situation.

Medina-Medina was due in court Monday for a detention hearing, but was being quarantined, leading the judge to continue the case, as Chicago police sources told Fox News the illegal immigrant could possibly have tuberculosis.

Iran rejects Trump diplomacy claims as US Marines deploy for mission
President Donald Trump paused planned U.S. strikes on Iran just hours before a self-imposed deadline, citing diplomatic progress that Tehran immediately denied, even as U.S. forces continued moving into position, a split signal that leaves the next move uncertain.
The move creates a narrow five-day window in which the administration is signaling diplomacy while preserving the ability to strike, raising the stakes for whether talks materialize — or whether the delay simply sets up near-term escalation.
The abrupt shift follows a weekend ultimatum in which Trump warned the U.S. would begin targeting Iran’s power infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz was not reopened, a threat that rattled global oil markets and heightened fears of imminent conflict.
By Monday morning, however, Trump announced a five-day delay, pointing to what he described as “very good and productive conversations” tied to a broader framework that includes nuclear disarmament.
TRUMP’S MIDDLE EAST ENVOY REVEALS WHAT LED TO BREAKDOWN IN IRAN TALKS BEFORE OPERATION EPIC FURY
The rapid shift from ultimatum to pause in less than 48 hours resets the clock, opening a five-day window for diplomacy before a decision on strikes.
The whiplash shift, from strike threat to sudden pause, adds to the uncertainty around Washington’s next move.
The White House and the Iranian mission to the United Nations could not immediately be reached for comment.
Iranian officials quickly rejected the claim that negotiations were underway, dismissing Trump’s comments as “psychological warfare” and accusing Washington of using the appearance of diplomacy to buy time.
Even as the White House points to diplomacy, the Pentagon has continued to expand its military footprint in the region.
In recent days, thousands of U.S. Marines have been deployed aboard amphibious warships, adding rapid-strike and ground-operation capabilities near Iran, with additional naval assets positioned to support escalation if ordered.
The posture suggests the United States is maintaining, and in some cases increasing, its readiness to act, even as Trump signals a potential opening for negotiations.
TRUMP DELAYS XI MEETING AS IRAN CONFLICT LETS US STRONG-ARM CHINA’S OIL SUPPLY
Iranian officials argue the two tracks are linked.
Tehran has accused Washington of using talk of diplomacy to influence oil markets and buy time for military repositioning, deepening uncertainty over whether the pause reflects a genuine diplomatic opening or a temporary delay before further action.
The dual-track approach is also being echoed by key U.S. allies.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that Trump sees “an opportunity to leverage the substantial achievements” of recent military operations to advance war objectives through a potential agreement.
“At the same time, we continue to strike both in Iran and in Lebanon,” Netanyahu said.
Some analysts say the approach reflects a strategy of applying military pressure while testing whether diplomacy produces concessions.
“I think that there’s definitely a method to the president’s decision-making here,” Jason Brodsky, policy director at United Against Nuclear Iran, told Fox News Digital.
“He is testing to see what concessions the Iranian regime would be prepared to make,” Brodsky said. “The president can be testing diplomacy. The president can also be buying time. … All these things can be true at the same time. It’s not either-or.”
Still, Brodsky expressed skepticism that the current moment will produce a breakthrough.
“I remain skeptical that we’re anywhere near a point where the Iranian regime will make significant concessions,” he said.
With the five-day window now underway, attention is shifting to what comes next.

If negotiations fail to materialize, the administration could move forward with the strikes it has already threatened or escalate to a ground operation — with forces now in position to carry them out. If talks do take shape, the pause could mark the start of a broader diplomatic effort.
A central unresolved issue is Iran’s nuclear stockpile, which Trump and Israeli officials have signaled remains a key objective of the operation. Securing or neutralizing highly enriched uranium could prove critical in determining whether the conflict moves toward a diplomatic resolution or further military action.
In the coming days, key indicators will include whether any indirect talks emerge through intermediaries, whether U.S. force posture continues to expand, and whether Iran takes steps to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or signals willingness to negotiate.
Democratic Party’s suggestive pothole post leaves viewers asking ‘WTF is this?’
A graphic published by the Democratic National Committee’s official Instagram account on Sunday shocked social media users for suggestive phrasing and sexual innuendos it used to describe New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s work on fixing the city’s roads.
“HOLES FILLED,” the post read in bold blue-and-white lettering, framed over the picture of Mamdani.
The post included additional text, explaining that the graphic had to do with the city’s infrastructure.
“As of March 20, 66,000 holes filled in Mayor Mamdani’s pothole blitz,” the full phrase read.
MAMDANI MOVES TO SIDELINE NYC POLICE WITH NEW SAFETY OFFICE UNDER SWEEPING OVERHAUL
That didn’t stop viewers online from marveling over the word choice.
“How did this make it through approvals!?!?!?” one Republican strategist said, reacting to the image.
“Hahahah wtf is this???” Tim Pool, a podcast host, said in his own post.
The image left some users wondering if the post had been made in earnest.
“Are you f—— kidding me?” another user wrote
As of Monday, the post remained in place.
The image comes as Mamdani tries to make good on promises to improve New York City infrastructure. In addition to telling voters he would focus on the city’s roads, Mamdani made national news for commitments to enhance free public transportation, create as many as 200,000 new affordable housing units and renovate over 500 schools.
NYC MAYOR MAMDANI’S WIFE LIKED SOCIAL MEDIA POST CALLING OCT 7 SEXUAL VIOLENCE INVESTIGATION A ‘HOAX’: REPORT
The post on Sunday isn’t the first time the DNC has posted images of Mamdani accompanied by sexual double-entendres. In at least two other instances, the account has followed the same format: a picture of Mamdani overlaid with bold white lettering set against a blue background.
“Every street across all five boroughs PLOWED in New York City as of Feb. 24,” another one of their posts read from earlier this year.
One more about snowfall also followed a similar tone.
“16 INCHES of snowfall in New York City as of Feb. 23,” the DNC wrote.
That instance drew one Instagram commenter to quip that “they know what they did there.”
In the post about the potholes, some onlookers praised Mamdani for his work while ignoring the phrasing of the post.
MAMDANI’S ETSTATE TAX PLAN COULD DRIVE WEALTH OUT OF STATE, CRITICS WARN
“Mayor Mamdani, you are relentless,” a Dem strategist wrote.
“Greatness,” Democratic influencer Jack Cocchiarella wrote on X.
But those praises drew criticisms of their own.

“I don’t think the sexual puns about Mamdani is going to win over many voters,” a popular far-left activist account posted on X.
“You’re celebrating potholes getting filled? Isn’t that one of the basic functions of a city’s government?” another observer wrote.
The office of Mamdani did not respond to a request for comment on the image and whether they believed its language was appropriate. Fox News Digital also reached out to the DNC.
LIZ PEEK: The TSA nightmare is unacceptable — Congress needs to do its job now
Americans are furious, and rightly so.
Squabbling between Democrats and Republicans in Congress has led to a partial shutdown of our government and a whole lot of aggravation for millions of Americans traveling for spring break. It is an outrage.
Democrats refuse to fund the Department of Homeland Security, which includes ICE, to show their anger over deportation activities in Minnesota that left two protesters dead. But ICE has been funded through 2029; Democrats’ stubbornness is pointless, but painful. Cutting off monies flowing to the Transportation Security Administration and other parts of the DHS that have nothing to do with border control, has crippled airport security.
TSA OFFICIAL WARNS SMALLER AIRPORTS COULD SHUT DOWN AMID DHS FUNDING CRISIS
Republicans refuse to cater to Democrat showboating; they are blocking attempts to fund only those parts of the DHS that Hakeem Jeffries and his colleagues will agree to, which includes the TSA.
I say — fix this. As wait times in airports extend to multiple hours, with security lines snaking around terminals, Congress needs to do its job.
There’s a reason that Congress’ popularity is in the gutter. Gallup’s last read on how Americans view Congress shows only 16% approving of the job our House and Senate members are doing. 16%! That’s one of the worst ratings on record, surpassed only by the 14% approval Congress earned when it was shut down last November. The lowest approval rating on record — a ghastly 9% — was posted in November 2013, during yet another federal budget impasse. There’s a message there: get to work.
Surveys show NFL replacement referees, colonoscopies and toenail fungus among the many items that are more popular than Congress. But Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer might be less amused to hear that ICE — the agency Democrats love to hate — also has higher approval ratings than Congress.
Americans are split on whom to blame for the TSA nightmare. Republicans blame Democrats, who have now shut down our government four times in the past 18 months. Schumer seems convinced that opposing President Trump is his number one mission — the country be damned. Polling over the past year has shown Democrats angry that their legislators are not doing more to block Trump’s agenda. Schumer, along with his House counterpart Hakeem Jeffries, is responding to those polls by refusing to pay TSA, FEMA and some Coast Guard personnel. It is a lousy way to treat hundreds of thousands of hard-working government employees.
Republicans have balked at Democrats’ offer to fund only parts of DHS, including the TSA, confident that Schumer et al will let the lapse in ICE and Border Patrol funding continue indefinitely. Democrats have so demonized the agencies responsible for protecting our border that not paying the folks who track down child traffickers and people on the terror watch list seems a winning strategy.
This, despite our country suffering no less than four terror attacks in recent weeks and continuing to be at risk thanks to the war with Iran and four years of President Joe Biden allowing millions to cross our border unchecked. It is unconscionable that Democrats are denying their fellow countrymen the protections afforded by the Department of Homeland Security, which was forged in the ashes of the Islamic terror attacks on September 11, 2001, to keep us safe. Yes, long TSA lines are aggravating, but failing to protect our country is a much graver offense.
HOMAN FIRES BACK AT CNN HOST OVER ‘HOW WELL-THOUGHT-OUT’ ICE AIRPORT DEPLOYMENT PLAN IS
The White House and Republicans have made numerous concessions to Democrats, including requiring that ICE agents wear body cameras and also not permitting enforcement activities in sensitive locations like schools and churches. In addition, Senator Markwayne Mullin, who is President Trump’s nominee for incoming Homeland Security chief to replace Kristi Noem, has indicated he will agree to further Democrat demands, such as requiring judicial warrants as opposed to administrative warrants, thus slowing enforcement activities.
But President Trump and those in charge of ICE will not ban agents from wearing masks. They are required to carry identification, and to provide that upon request, but wearing masks helps protect them and their families from being doxxed by activists who have decided that these federal law enforcement officials are the enemy. ICE agents have come under increasing attack in recent months; there have been instances of pro-immigrant groups publishing their names and home addresses, and also assaulting officers. Apparently, Democrats want to encourage more of the same by prohibiting the wearing of masks, thus making ICE agents more easily identifiable.
This coming Friday, TSA employees will have gone a month without a paycheck. Is it any wonder that many are not showing up for work. Is it any wonder that the security lines are only getting longer?
The White House is dispatching ICE agents to airports across the U.S. in an effort to help the TSA, which is struggling with depleted ranks. It will be the ultimate irony if ICE agents meaningfully help airports return to normal. That will likely make Democrats even angrier.
Meanwhile, the American public is nearing the boiling point, furious at both parties for not resolving the DHS funding roadblock. Some Republicans (of the RINO variety, like Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski) are ready to cave to Democrat demands and provide funding for the TSA and other non-ICE agencies. Texas Senator Ted Cruz has a better idea, which is to fund the TSA, FEMA and the Coast Guard immediately and to create another budget reconciliation bill which could pass later in the year in order to secure money for ICE.

Republicans should follow Cruz’ suggestion. They can use the reconciliation process to achieve other high priority objectives, including providing funding for the SAVE Act. Using the reconciliation approach, which permitted the passage of the Big Beautiful Bill, allows the narrow GOP majority to bypass the filibuster problem, and get on with the nation’s work.
That’s a win-win, and that’s what the country wants right now.

Home invader allegedly strangled sleeping girl before resident takes him down
A New Jersey man allegedly broke into a home through a bathroom window and tried to sexually assault a girl as she slept early Saturday before he was subdued by the resident inside.
Jermin Fordyce, 36, is charged with first-degree counts of home invasion, burglary and attempted aggravated sexual assault, as well as second-degree aggravated assault, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Controversy erupts at Yale as damning letter from legendary coach leaks
EXCLUSIVE: A letter signed by former longtime Yale ice hockey coach Keith Allain, addressed to Yale President Maurine McInnis, alleged that current Yale Athletic Director Victoria Chun has created a “toxic environment” for the university’s sports teams.
In the letter, Allain claimed other Yale coaches urged him to speak out against Chun to McInnis after his retirement.

“My name is Keith Allain, I have just retired after 19 years as Mens Hockey Coach and I am writing to you at the urging of several head coaches in our Athletic Department. They told me that you were soliciting feedback from a few coaches regarding extending the contract of our athletic director, and are concerned, that with the culture of fear that permeates the athletic department, you will not receive candid feedback,” the letter began.
Allain went on to call Chun the “worst leader” he has ever been around and alleges she has prioritized “silencing any dissent.”
“As a Yale alum and someone who has a great affection for our University and the role of athletics within the greater Yale community I felt compelled write you as my former colleagues asked. Vicky Chun is the absolute worst leader I have ever been around in my life. She is dishonest, self centered and inaccessible. Vicky’s singular talent is self promotion and has created a toxic environment within the department where she is insulated by a cadre of administrators whose main task seems to be silencing any dissent,” the letter continued.
UNIVERSITY LEADER ADMITS SCHOOLS ARE ‘NOT A POLITICAL PARTY’ IN WARNING TO ELITE CAMPUSES
“I know this assessment seems harsh and I am willing to provide detail if you were interested in learning more about my experience and how Vicky’s lack of leadership affect my program. As a point of reference, our teams record before Vicky was 220 wins-144 losses-39 ties, with Vicky 62 wins-110 losses-15 ties. Responsibility for that record is mine, but we all know organizational leadership or lack of it has an impact.”
A source provided the letter to Fox News Digital. Allain later confirmed to Fox News Digital that he wrote the letter and sent it to McInnis in October, shortly after he retired after 19 years leading Yale hockey. Allain declined further comment.
Fox News Digital reached out to the Yale president’s office and athletic department for a response.
Fox News Digital is currently reviewing additional claims and allegations.

Allain, who played ice hockey at Yale from 1976-80, took over as head coach in 2006, leading the program to the NCAA championship in 2013 and seven Ivy League championships during his tenure. He finished his tenure with a record of 282–254–54.
Chun, a former volleyball player and later head coach for Colgate University, took over as Yale Athletic Director in 2018 after serving in the same position at Colgate from 2012-18.
James Carville admits he’s ‘crazy’ in rant about Trump, goes after Maher
Democratic strategist James Carville criticized President Donald Trump and comedian Bill Maher during a recent episode of the “Politics War Room” podcast, where he responded to Trump’s remarks about former FBI Director Robert Mueller and pushed back on Maher’s comments about “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
“Do me a favor, Bill. Try to get your head out of Bari Weiss’s a–,” Carville said, addressing Maher directly during the segment.
Carville’s remarks came after Maher criticized him as acting like a “crazy old man” with “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” arguing that Carville represents a small segment of political media disconnected from everyday Americans.
CARVILLE PREDICTS TRUMP WILL LEAVE OFFICE NEXT YEAR OUT OF FRUSTRATION AFTER MIDTERMS
Carville pushed back on that characterization, summarizing Maher’s critique before responding.
“The argument is basically myself and people like me are crazy… we’re just blind rage, crazy, we can’t stand Trump,” Carville said.
He followed up by embracing the labels, calling himself and those like-minded crazy.
“I’m going to agree with you. I’m crazy… a lot of people like me, we’re crazy,” Carville said.

Carville described his reaction to the current political climate, claiming he and like-minded people wake up early, in a rage, over the state of the country.
“We wake up at 2 o’clock in the morning, throwing s— against the wall. I can’t believe this motherf—– is the president of the United States,” Carville said.
“Maybe our craziness is evidence of our sanity,” he added.

Carville also pointed to Trump’s response to Mueller’s death, noting Trump reacted by saying he was “glad,” and questioned whether that should change how critics view the situation.
“Robert Mueller dies and Trump says, ‘I’m glad,'” Carville said. “Will you be stuck with being insane about this?”

Carville closed by reiterating his message to critics, saying they can “mock us” and “make fun of us,” but his position remains unchanged.

“James Carville is a stone-cold loser who clearly suffers from a severe and debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted his peanut-sized brain,” White House spokesperson, Davis Ingle, told Fox News Digital.
