New poll shows where VP Harris, Trump stand in states likely to decide 2024 election
Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are virtually tied in three crucial battleground states, according to new statewide surveys from Marist College.
The Marist Poll released Thursday finds that Harris and Trump are tied at 49% among likely voters in North Carolina who were asked which candidate they were leaning toward. Of those polled who have made up their minds, 91% said they strongly support their choice.
The race is tight in Arizona as well, where Trump polls just one point ahead of Harris, 50% to 49%, according to the Marist Institute for Public Opinion. The same goes for Georgia, where 50% of likely voters are leaning towards Trump and 49% say they are more inclined to vote for Harris.
The Marist Polls were conducted from Sept. 19-24, surveying 4,643 registered voters across all three states who report they are definitely voting in this year’s election.
HARRIS-TRUMP SHOWDOWN: THE EDGE IS CLEAR ON THIS KEY ISSUE
There are 43 Electoral College votes up for grabs between Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina. Trump, a Republican, won all three in his 2016 victory over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, but lost Arizona and Georgia to President Biden in his 2020 defeat. North Carolina, a swing state that Trump won twice, has an incumbent Democratic governor and appears more competitive this year as the Republican candidate for governor, Mark Robinson, is mired in scandal over posts he allegedly made on a porn website and polls poorly against state Attorney General Josh Stein, the Democratic candidate.
“North Carolina, with its 16 electoral votes, is both the Harris and Trump campaigns’ backup plan after the hard-fought battle over Pennsylvania,” said Dr. Lee M. Miringoff, Director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion. “North Carolina is so close that the five regions in the state line up now almost exactly as they did four years ago. It’s as if the Biden years and the 2024 campaign haven’t happened.”
Harris and Trump are tied at 48% among North Carolina independents who are likely to vote. Biden carried Tar Heel independents by four points in 2020, according to the 2020 Presidential Exit Poll. Harris leads Trump among Black voters 86% to 13%, but underperforms compared to Biden, who earned 92% of the Black vote in North Carolina in 2020. Trump has an advantage over Harris with white voters, 59% to 40%, though Harris has improved with this demographic over Biden, who won 33% of the white vote in 2020.
The top issues for North Carolina voters are inflation (32%), preserving democracy (28%), immigration (14%) and abortion (11%), according to the poll.

Over in Arizona, Harris edges Trump among independents 51% to 47%. Biden won Arizona independents by 9 points four years ago, 53% to Trump’s 44%. Again, Trump leads Harris among white voters 51% to 48%, while the Latino vote is competitive, with 51% leaning towards Trump and 49% towards Harris.
The top issues for Arizona voters are preserving democracy (27%), inflation (26%), immigration (21%) and abortion (14%), the survey said.
“Arizona’s 11 electoral votes are up for grabs, but the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate (Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz.) has a double-digit lead,” said Miringoff. “Voters in the state, like elsewhere, are willing to split their ticket this time unlike the straight party voting that occurred in 2016 and 2020.”
Harris also leads Trump among Georgia independents by five percentage points, 51% to 46%. Similar to Arizona, Biden won Georgia independents by 9 points in what was the first presidential election win for Peach State Democrats since 1992. Trump heavily contested the 2020 results in Georgia and continues to make unproven allegations of widespread voter fraud that have been rejected by Georgia officials, including Republican Gov. Brian Kemp.
EARLY VOTING BEGINS IN ILLINOIS, NORTH DAKOTA, FLORIDA AND MICHIGAN
“Georgia was ground zero for election controversies in 2020. Yet, the overwhelming majority of Georgians express confidence that elections will be fair and accurate,” said Miringoff. “Interestingly, most Democrats and Republicans share this view despite the results last time.”
Georgia voters rank inflation as the top issue (34%), followed by preserving democracy (24%), immigration (13%) and abortion (11%).
A Fox News national poll taken after the first debate between Harris and Trump spotlighted that 39% of voters surveyed said the economy was their most pressing issue, far ahead of immigration (16%) and abortion (15%). All other issues tested were in single digits.
“An increasing number say grocery prices and housing costs are tough for their family,” the Fox News poll notes.

Trump led Harris on the economy by 5 points in the Fox News poll.
“The issue profile of this election continues to favor Trump,” said Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who conducts the Fox News Poll along with Democrat Chris Anderson.
But Shaw added that Trump’s “edge on economic issues has decreased, probably due to Harris’ messaging on housing costs and taxes, both of which target the middle class and appear to be paying off.”
VP Harris isn’t hearing the end of it after her latest word salad takes X by storm
Vice President Kamala Harris served up what some might consider an “inspired” word salad during her most recent appearance.
Harris addressed the Economic Club of Pittsburgh Wednesday where she outlined her economic agenda as the Democratic presidential nominee. During her speech, she emphasized the need to guard the spirit of American inspiration.
“We need to guard that spirit. We have to guard that spirit. Let it always inspire us. Let it always be the source of our optimism, which is that spirit that is uniquely American. Let that then inspire us by helping us to be inspired to solve the problems that so many face including our small business owners,” Harris said.
This statement provoked widespread mockery as another example of circular “vapidity” from Harris.

This moment came about one week after another Harris word salad while she was speaking at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s 47th Annual Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C.
Harris spoke about providing families with the necessary resources so that parents can “raise their children well,” declaring, “I grew up understanding the children of the community are the children of the community, and we should all have a vested interest in ensuring that children can go grow up with the resources that they need to achieve their God-given potential.”
She has made similar repetive comments about the “community” over the years.

Surgeon accused of fatally removing man’s liver instead of spleen learns fate
A Florida surgeon accused of removing a man’s liver instead of his spleen during a surgery, causing the patient to bleed out on the operating table, has had his medical license suspended by the state.
In a damning emergency order from the Florida Department of Health, Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky is said to have removed Alabama resident Bill Bryan’s liver instead of his spleen in a “grievous medical error” that makes him an “immediate, serious danger” to the public.
The order details Shaknovsky’s alleged “egregious conduct,” saying he went to great lengths to cover up his mistake by fabricating medical records, lying about what happened and pressuring others to lie about what happened.
Bryan, 70, died during surgery performed by Shaknovsky at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital in Miramar Beach, Florida, on August 21.

Bryan and his wife Beverly were visiting their rental property in Destin on August 18 when Bryan began feeling pain in his side.
According to the order, Bryan arrived at the hospital and was told he was suffering from an enlarged spleen. Shaknovsky said Bryan needed his spleen removed immediately, but Bryan refused.
“We called Bill’s doctor, here at home in Northwest Alabama, and he told Bill that he would have surgeons here in North Alabama waiting when we got home,” Beverly told local station WMBB. “I tried to convince Dr. Shaknovsky to let me take him home or arrange for him to be transported, but Dr. Shaknovsky said that Bill would bleed to death if he was moved.”
The order says after three days in the hospital, Shaknovsky continued to pressure Bryan to have surgery – and he eventually gave in.
The order says operating room staff were concerned that Shaknovsky “did not have the skill level to safely perform” the “complicated” procedure – but the operation went forward.
The order says Shaknovsky lied and gave several different accounts of what happened during the surgery, finally admitting that at one point during the operation he fired a stapling device “blindly” into the abdomen and removed an organ he “believed to be a spleen.”
He claimed the spleen was grossly enlarged and deformed and that the liver was in an unusual location, which caused him to confuse the organs.
However, the state’s order said witnesses in the operating room told a very different story. At one point, Shaknovsky identified a vessel he intended to cut and said he could feel it pulsing under his finger. According to the order, he told the staff member assisting him, “that’s scary.”
The order details that after the organ was removed, Bryan began to severely hemorrhage and went into cardiac arrest. Despite this, the order says, Shaknovsky continued dissecting even though there was “no visibility” and he never called for a clamp or cauterizer. Witnesses confirmed that Shaknovsky “blindly” fired the stapling device into Bryan’s abdomen.

The order says Shaknovsky removed Bryan’s liver but identified it as a spleen, despite the two organs being different sizes, colors and on totally different sides of the body.
“The staff looked at the readily-identifiable liver on the table and were shocked when Dr. Shaknovsky told them it was a spleen,” the order reads. “One staff member felt sick to their stomach.”
Shaknovsky claimed Bryan died from a “ruptured splenic artery aneurysm,” and made several efforts to convince staff in the operating room that he was correct, even though they knew it wasn’t true.
Shaknovsky requested the organ that was removed be labeled a “spleen” and be sent to pathology. The order says the person responsible for labeling the organ knew it was not a spleen but did as they were instructed.
After the “chaos of the surgery was over,” Shaknovsky even went to pathology to look at the organ again, but refused to acknowledge his mistake, the order said. Instead, he fabricated his operative order in great detail, claiming specific ligaments and structures were dissected, but they were never touched.
Fox News Digital reviewed the pathology report from Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast, and it confirmed the organ removed from Bryan was, in fact, his liver.
According to the state’s order, removing Bryan’s liver instead of his spleen was not Shaknovsky’s first medical mistake. In May of 2023, Shaknovsky removed a portion of a patient’s pancreas instead of the adrenal gland, the order said. Shaknovsky claimed the adrenal gland had “migrated” to a different part of the body when he was confronted about the mistake.
The order said the patient in that case suffered “long-term, permanent harm.”
“Dr. Shaknovsky’s repeated egregious surgical errors resulted in significant patient harm coupled with his failure to take responsibility for these errors indicates that his reckless conduct is likely to continue,” the order says. “Therefore, Dr. Shaknovsky’s continued practice as an osteopathic physician presents an immediate, serious danger to the health, welfare, and safety of the public.”
ALABAMA SUPREME COURT RULES COUPLES CAN SUE FOR WRONGFUL DEATH AFTER EMBRYOS WERE DROPPED
Beverly Bryan is pursing both criminal and civil proceedings in her husband’s death, according to Zarzaur Law, the Florida-based firm representing the family.
“My husband died while helpless on the operating room table by Dr. Shaknovsky. I don’t want anyone else to die due to his incompetence at a hospital that should have known or knew he had previously made drastic, life-altering surgical mistakes,” Bryan’s widow Beverly said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital.
Fox News Digital reached out to Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast for comment on Shaknovsky’s suspension, but did not immediately receive a response.

The hospital previously told Fox News Digital it was investigating Bryan’s death, but said it does not comment on specific patient cases or active litigation.

Hurricane Helene to strike as Category 3 with ‘unsurvivable’ 20-foot storm surge
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The time to prepare for the onslaught of Hurricane Helene is essentially over as the monster storm continues to gain strength and sets its sights on Florida’s Big Bend region, where it will unleash a potentially “unsurvivable” 20-foot storm surge, catastrophic hurricane-force winds and flooding rain.
Nearly the entire state of Florida is under some sort of tropical weather alert, with Tropical Storm Warnings extending hundreds of miles inland into Georgia and the Carolinas, including Atlanta.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) says that because of Hurricane Helene’s massive size, there is a significant risk of a life-threatening storm surge along the entire west coast of the Florida Peninsula, as well as Florida’s Big Bend region.
“A catastrophic and deadly storm surge is likely along portions of the Florida Big Bend coast, where inundation could reach as high as 20 feet above ground level, along with destructive waves,” the NHC warned.
The highest inundation, with as much as 20 feet of storm surge flooding, is expected from Carrabelle to the Suwannee River in Florida, with other locations like Apalachicola and Chassahowitzka forecast to see 10-15 feet of storm surge.
St. Petersburg and Naples have already reported a storm surge of 2-3 feet, and Hurricane Helene is still more than 200 miles away from the Florida Gulf Coast.
HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER
Tampa Bay is expected to see a storm surge of 5-8 feet.
The National Weather Service in Tallahassee issued a dire warning about the potentially deadly storm surge on Thursday morning.
“There is increasing confidence of catastrophic and potentially unsurvivable storm surge for Apalachee Bay,” the NWS said. “Storm surge may begin to arrive as early as (Thursday) afternoon ahead of the strongest winds, building through landfall.”

NHC Director Dr. Michael Brennan joined FOX Weather on Thursday and urged residents to listen to officials and leave immediately if told to do so.
“The impacts of this storm are on an enormous scale and are going to extend over multiple states all the way up into the Carolinas and southern Appalachians – the storm surge, the hurricane and tropical storm force winds and the potential for catastrophic rainfall,” Brennan said.
Brennan brought up Hurricane Michael in 2018 when talking about how deadly and dangerous a storm surge can be.
“When Hurricane Michael hit Mexico Beach in 2018, there were people who waited until that last minute, and people drowned in their cars trying to get away because the water comes up so fast that you cannot get out,” Brennan noted. “That’s why you should follow those evacuation orders you’re given by your local officials and get out ahead of the storm. Much of these areas, you still have time, but that time is rapidly running out.”
Time to prepare for Hurricane Helene essentially over

Millions of Florida residents from the Panhandle to the Keys have spent the last several days preparing for potential impacts, but as Helene gains strength and moves closer to the Sunshine State, the time to prepare is essentially over.
Windows are boarded up and residents were busy filling sandbags and stocking up on essential supplies this week ahead of mandatory evacuation orders that were issued for numerous counties ahead of the hurricane’s arrival.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TROPICAL DEPRESSION, TROPICAL STORM AND HURRICANE?
Earlier this week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an executive order declaring a state of emergency for 61 of the state’s 67 counties to help agencies prepare for the storm.
Shelters have also been opened for evacuated Florida residents, and the Florida Division of Emergency Management said that as of Wednesday night, about 500 people were seeking safety in a shelter.
And it wasn’t only residents who have been busy preparing – travel is also being impacted.
Lines begin to form at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Thursday as travelers prepare for security screenings.

Flight disruptions have been reported at the world’s busiest airport in Atlanta, and Tampa International Airport said it was suspending operations on Thursday. Other airports in the region, such as St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport and Tallahassee International Airport have also suspended operations on Thursday.
Cruise lines have also been impacted in Port Canaveral and Tampa in Florida, and even major theme parks like Universal Studios and Walt Disney World in Orlando are reporting closures.
Crews have also been getting ready to protect critical infrastructure with the hopes of minimizing impacts from Hurricane Helene.

Thousands of utility crews across the U.S. have descended upon Florida to help with power restoration efforts once the weather improves. This includes tree trimmers and bucket trucks to help repair storm damage and restore power when it’s safe enough to do so.
“Phase 2 of the storm will be this evening when Helene makes landfall,” FOX Weather Hurricane Specialist Byran Norcross said. “Based on everything we know, damage will be widespread around Tallahassee east and west and far north into Georgia. These are heavily treed communities that will not handle extreme winds. Power could be out for weeks.”

As of the latest advisory from the NHC, Hurricane Helene was located about 250 miles southwest of Tampa and was moving to the north-northeast at 14 mph.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to 105 mph, making it a strong Category 2 hurricane.

However, the NHC warns that Hurricane Helene will continue to intensify and could become a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 115 mph or higher when it makes landfall along Florida’s Big Bend region Thursday night or early Friday morning.
“If Helene comes ashore as a Category 3 or 4 as forecast, it will be the strongest hurricane to make landfall on that part of the Florida coast in more than 150 years,” Norcross said. “There was a devastating hurricane that impacted the Big Bend of Florida and Tallahassee in 1842. Nothing since then has come ashore as a Category 3 or higher in that area. Hurricane Idalia hit farther south last year, of course, and mostly missed Florida’s capital city.”
HURRICANE HELENE FORCES CLOSURES AT NATIONAL PARKS ACROSS SOUTHEAST
Hurricane-force winds (75-plus mph) extend 60 miles from the storm’s center, while tropical-storm-force winds (40-plus mph) extend outward 345 miles.
That’s roughly the distance between Miami and Jacksonville. For those living outside of Florida, that’s also roughly the same distance between New York City and Pittsburgh, or from Los Angeles to San Francisco.
So far, a 64-mph wind gust has been reported at Naval Air Station Key West in Florida, and conditions are expected to continue to deteriorate as Hurricane Helene moves closer.
Indictment against Dem NYC mayor unsealed after corruption investigation
FBI agents raided New York City’s mayoral mansion Thursday morning in a predawn raid hours before a federal indictment on campaign corruption charges against Mayor Eric Adams became public.
Federal prosecutors allege he illegally received foreign and corporate campaign donations for a decade in exchange for influence. Adams countered with a video statement saying any charges filed against him would be “entirely false, based on lies,” and insinuated that his criticism of the Biden administration’s disastrous border policies made him a target for retaliation.
“The federal government did nothing as its broken immigration policies overloaded our shelter system with no relief,” he said. “I put the people of New York before party and politics.”
NEW YORK CITY MAYOR ERIC ADAMS INDICTED
Sources said agents seized the mayor’s phone during the morning operation, although it was not immediately clear whether Adams was at Gracie Mansion when they arrived.
They did not arrest Adams, according to his lawyer, Alex Spiro.
The alleged fraud also sucked in more public funding for the mayor’s campaign under a program that supplements small-dollar donations with matching grants of up to $2,000 supported by taxpayers, according to the indictment. According to court documents, a donation of just $250 from an individual could send a candidate up to $2,000 in “matching funds” from taxpayers. It happened so frequently that Adams allegedly received $10 million from the program.
On top of campaign donations, Adams allegedly received other perks like free flights on Turkish Airlines to destinations in Europe and Asia, free hotel stays and free high-end meals. In one instance, he allegedly asked about flying to Chile’s Easter Island on a Turkish jet – but he couldn’t because it did not offer a route connecting New York and the South American country.
In some cases, he is accused of creating a fake paper trail to make it look like items had been paid for, and he is accused of deleting text messages to and from co-conspirators about the purported scam.
Speaking to reporters Thursday, Damian Williams, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, called the fake paper trail “just a clumsy cover-up.”
READ THE INDICTMENT:
“Federal agents appeared this morning at Gracie Mansion in an effort to create a spectacle (again) and take Mayor Adams’ phone (again),” Adams’ lawyer told The Associated Press. “They send a dozen agents to pick up a phone when we would have happily turned it in.”
But court documents allege a long history of public corruption. As far back as 2016, Adams allegedly began accepting luxurious travel perks in secret, according to the indictment.

In a series of free or “heavily discounted” trips overseas, Adams visited India, France, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Nepal and China, according to the filing. In all, he and his entourage allegedly paid around $2,300 for flights that should have cost $66,000. He sometimes allegedly flew hours off course to transfer at Instanbul and save money when he could have flown somewhere direct in far less time.
Federal prosecutors allege he was given free yacht rides, driven around in luxury cars and got free stays at hotels like the Four Seasons and St. Regis.
Then he illegally failed to disclose the trips and perks on annual disclosure forms, according to prosecutors.

At one point, an Adams staffer allegedly pushed back at a Turkish national’s attempt to give donations through an American straw-donor of Turkish decent.
“I think he wouldn’t get involved in such games,” the staffer said, according to court documents. “They might cause a big stink later on…but I’ll ask anyways.”
The staffer later discussed the logistics of a $100,000 donation, according to the indictment.
David Gelman, a New Jersey-based defense attorney and legal surrogate for the Trump campaign, said the feds were likely serving a warrant to seize data on the mayor’s devices.
But he also questioned the case against Adams.
“The question is, is it politically motivated?” he said. “It’s possible. The DOJ has shown over the last 3.5 years that they are weaponized.”
Adams blasted the feds for what he described as a pressure campaign designed to make him look guilty and undermine his credibility.

“Just this past week, they searched the home of our new police commissioner looking for documents for 20 years ago, just one week after he joined my administration,” he said. “Enough. I will fight these injustices with every ounce of my strength and my spirit.”
He insisted that he is innocent and argued against calls for his resignation.
“Now, if I am charged, many may say I should resign because I cannot manage the city while fighting the case,” he said. “I can also understand how everyday New Yorkers would be concerned that I cannot do my job while facing accusations. But I have been facing these lies for month, since I began to speak out for all of you and their investigation started, yet the city has continued to improve. Make no mistake, you elected me to lead this city, and lead it I will.”
Details of the indictment were expected to be made public later Thursday morning.
“We have no idea of the charges or accusations but Adams and his legal team have been well aware that the indictment was coming down,” Gelman said. “Nobody knows if they have cooperated but if the Feds have a person in their crosshairs, they don’t miss.”

Federal agents have conducted a series of raids targeting Adams’ inner circle in recent weeks, including the new police commissioner, the commissioner he replaced, and other top aides in the mayor’s office and from his campaign.
The FBI has reportedly been looking into whether Adams’ 2021 mayoral campaign conspired with the Turkish government and other entities to raise funds. Some New York officials have also been probed over potential investigations into contacts with China.

Two United Airlines passengers were hospitalized last week after the plane had to suddenly slow its descent to San Francisco International Airport to avoid another aircraft, the airline said.
The incident aboard United flight 2428 occurred on Sept. 19 as the flight was traveling from Newark, N.J., the airline told Fox News Digital in a statement on Thursday morning.
The aircraft began its descent with the seatbelt sign on when the pilots made the maneuver “to account for another aircraft at a lower altitude,” according to the airline.
“Two customers, including one who was out of their seat at the time, reported possible injuries and were transported to a hospital,” United Airlines said in the statement. “We’re grateful to our crew for their efforts to ensure the safety of our employees and customers.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed to Fox News Digital in a statement that the agency was investigating the incident.
“United Airlines Flight 2428 responded to an onboard alert which occurred around 12:45 p.m. local time on Thursday, Sept. 19 in Oakland Air Route Traffic Control Center Airspace that another aircraft was in the vicinity,” the FAA said. “The United flight landed safely at San Francisco International Airport.”

The FAA said “there was no loss of safe separation,” which means that the two aircraft maintained a minimum distance from one another.

Last month, a United Airlines flight traveling from Cancun to Chicago was diverted to Memphis, Tennessee, after the plane encountered “a brief period of severe turbulence” that left one passenger hospitalized and six others injured, officials said at the time.

“[The economy] it’s really not great. Inflation is high and, if we compare these four years under this administration compared to four years under my husband as commander in chief, he was leading the country through peace through strength. And the border was safer than ever before. We didn’t have any wars. People were prospering. They had jobs. They could support their families, so I think the American people need to decide what they really want. Maybe some strong tweets, but everything else great for this country, so it’s all in the American people’s hands on November 5th.”
The conversation marked the former first lady’s first television interview in more than two years. It also came in anticipation of her new memoir release titled “Melania.”
During the interview, she also recalled finding out about the two attempts on her husband’s life, which have come within a brief two-month span.
The first came when gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire on the former president at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, striking his ear and leaving blood streaming down his face.

Crooks also claimed the life of former Pennsylvania fire chief Corey Comperatore and injured rally-goers David Dutch and James Copenhaven.
“I ran to the TV and I [rewound] it and I watched it,” Melania recalled.
“I didn’t really see [it] live, but maybe, you know, three minutes, a few minutes later. But when I saw it, I, you know, it was only. . . . Nobody really knew yet. Because when you see him on the floor, and you don’t know, you don’t know what really happened.”

Just two months later, the former president had another brush with death at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida, when the barrel of suspected gunman Ryan Routh’s firearm was spotted among the bushes.
Melania was in New York at the time, but called to make sure everything was fine. While speaking to Earhardt, she credited the Secret Service for a “fantastic” job.
“The guys that they were, the team, they were fantastic. And I think both of the events, they were really miracles. If you really think about it, July 13th was a miracle. How . . . like that much, and he could, you know, he could not be with us.”
