VP Harris sidesteps question on border policy ‘mistake’ during tense TV exchange
Vice President Kamala Harris was pressed by CBS News’ Bill Whitaker about whether it was a “mistake” for the Biden administration to go soft on its border policies during a tense exchange on Monday’s special election episode of “60 Minutes.”
“You recently visited the southern border and embraced President Biden‘s recent crackdown on asylum seekers, and that crackdown produced an almost immediate and dramatic decrease in the number of border crossings,” Whitaker said. “If that’s the right answer now, why didn’t your administration take those steps in 2021?”
“The first bill we proposed to Congress was to fix our broken immigration system, knowing that if you want to actually fix it, we need Congress to act. It was not taken up,” Harris responded. “Fast forward to a moment when a bipartisan group of members of the United States Senate, including one of the most conservative members of the United States Senate, got together, came up with a border security bill.
“Well, guess what happened? Donald Trump got word that this bill was afoot and could be passed, and he wants to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem. So he told his buddies in Congress, ‘Kill the bill, don’t let it move forward.'”

“I’ve been covering the border for years, and so I know this is not a problem that started with your administration,” Whitaker said. “But there was an historic flood of undocumented immigrants coming across the border the first three years of your administration. As a matter of fact, arrivals quadrupled from the last year of President Trump.”
“Was it a mistake to loosen the immigration policies as much as you did?” Whitaker then asked.
“It’s a long-standing problem, and solutions are at hand, and from day one, literally, we have been offering solutions,” Harris responded.

“What I was asking was, was it a mistake to kind of allow that flood to happen in the first place?” the veteran CBS News journalist pressed.
“I think the policies that we have been proposing are about fixing a problem, not promoting a problem, okay,” Harris responded.
“But the numbers did quadruple under your watch,” Whitaker interjected.
“And the numbers today because of what we have done, we have cut the flow of illegal immigration by half,” Harris continued, as Whitaker attempted to ask the question a third time. “We have cut the flow of fentanyl by half, but we need Congress to be able to act, to actually fix the problem.”

Monster storm strengthens with millions in US bracing for impact: ‘Extremely dangerous’
TAMPA – Mandatory evacuations are underway across the west coast of Florida as millions of residents prepare for life-threatening impacts from Hurricane Milton, which continues to rapidly intensify over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and strengthened into a powerful Category 5 storm with winds of 180 mph.

The National Hurricane Center said the central pressure in the eye of Hurricane Milton has fallen to a near-record low.
“Milton poses an extremely serious threat to Florida,” the NHC wrote, urging residents to follow directions from local officials if told to leave.
Milton continues to be a monster storm and near record-breaking hurricane. According to the FOX Forecast Center, the hurricane has the second-lowest pressure on record in the Gulf of Mexico and the lowest pressure in the Atlantic since 2005.
At 180 mph, Milton is the strongest Atlantic hurricane in 5 years since Hurricane Dorian in 2019. Milton is also tied for the fourth strongest storm since record keeping began. Hurricane Allen with 190 mph winds holds the record for the strongest Atlantic hurricane.
The situation is becoming more dire in Florida, with state and local officials warning residents that the time to prepare for the life-threatening storm is running out. They say people near the coast or living in low-lying areas need to get out before the storm approaches and brings with it a potentially deadly storm surge that could reach up to 15 feet in some spots, including Tampa Bay.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis already placed 51 of the state’s 67 counties under a State of Emergency, and on Monday, President Joe Biden approved the state’s pre-landfall emergency declaration request, which now authorizes the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate all disaster relief efforts and to provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures.

The first alerts were posted along Florida’s Gulf Coast early Monday morning, and those have since expanded to include more areas of Central Florida, including the Orlando area.
As Hurricane Milton approached, Storm Surge Warnings were issued for the Gulf Coast of Florida from Flamingo to the Suwannee River, including Charlotte Harbor and Tampa Bay.
The current storm surge forecast for Tampa Bay is up to 15 feet if the peak surge coincides with high tide. This is notably higher than during Helene, when Tampa Bay saw 7-8 feet of storm surge.

Charlotte Harbor is expected to see a storm surge of 6-10 feet, while Bonita Beach could see a surge of 4-7 feet.

Hurricane Milton is located about 650 miles southwest of Tampa, Florida, and has maximum sustained winds of 175 mph, making it a strong Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Milton is moving off to the east-southeast, and that general motion is expected to continue through Monday night. After that, the NHC said Hurricane Milton should make a turn to the east and then northeast on Tuesday and Wednesday.
On that forecast track, Hurricane Milton is expected to move near or just north of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula on Monday and Tuesday, then cross the eastern Gulf of Mexico and approach the west coast of the Florida Peninsula by Wednesday.
Surge in earthquakes at US volcano triggers heightened scientific monitoring
Scientists are deploying monitors at the volcanic Mount Adams in Washington State, after a spike in seismic activity.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said Mount Adams typically experiences an earthquake every two to three years, but in September, there were six earthquakes alone, marking the most in a single month since monitoring began in 1982.
The earthquakes were monitored by the USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO) and Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) and ranged in magnitudes from 0.9 to 2.0. None of the earthquakes were felt at the surface, the USGS said.
With only one seismic station near the volcano, the USGS said monitoring capabilities are limited.
LAVA CONTINUES FLOWING FROM ICELAND VOLCANO AFTER ERUPTION
CVO and PNSN plan to install temporary seismic stations near Mount Adams to help detect smaller earthquakes while acquiring better estimates of size, location and depth. The data will help scientists assess the significance of the increased seismic activity near the volcano.
With permission from the U.S. Forest Service, CVO will place the temporary stations south and southwest of Mount Adams. Once activated, the data will be transmitted to CVO and PNSN in real-time.
LATEST ICELAND VOLCANIC ERUPTION SUBSIDES, BUT EXPERTS WARY OF MORE SOON TO COME
Despite the spike in seismic activity, the USGS says there is no indication that there is cause for concern and the alert level and color code for Mount Adams remains at Green and Normal.
Mount Adams is located in south central Washington, nearly 50 miles west-southwest of Yakima, Washington.

In the north-south trending Mount Adams-King Mountain volcanic field of over 120 smaller volcanos, Mount Adams is the most prominent summit. It is also the second-tallest volcano in Washington and is the state’s largest active volcano in volume and area, according to the USGS.
The agency said over the past 12,000 years, there have been four lava flows that started on the apron of the volcano and two vents along the south ridge. The flows have typically only traveled a few miles from their vents.

The last time Mount Adams erupted was between 3,800 and 7,600 years ago, the USGS added.

The summit, which is covered in ice, also covers up large volumes of hydrothermally weakened rock, which, if weakened by future landslides, could generate lahars.
Diddy’s celebrity friends quietly settle with victims ahead of lawsuits, lawyer says
Sean “Diddy” Combs’ famous friends are allegedly settling with victims outside of court to ensure they are not named in impending lawsuits, according to a Texas-based attorney representing over 100 accusers.
Tony Buzbee claimed plans are in the works to sue several celebrities who allegedly helped the musician cover up sexual abuse that occurred at his parties.
“If you were attending one of these parties, if you will, and you attended before, or you knew what was going to happen — that is, you knew that a particular drug was being used in drinks that was causing people to be coerced and taken advantage of — and you were there in the room, or you participated, or you watched it happen and didn’t say anything, or you helped cover it up, in my view, you have a problem,” Buzbee said during an appearance on TMZ Live.

Buzbee is planning to take legal action against a handful of A-list celebrities on behalf of his clients, although the lawyer did not indicate who. Some celebrities have already settled, he claimed.
“In every single case, especially cases like this, we collect our data, collect our evidence, do our due diligence, spend time with the victim, and then because it’s in the best interest of the victim, we attempt to resolve these matters without the filing of a public lawsuit, and we have done that already,” Buzbee explained.
“We’ve done that with a handful of individuals, many of which you’ve heard of before, and we’ll continue to do that.”

The lawyer announced the filing of a class-action suit against Combs on Oct. 1. He is representing 120 victims, some of whom were minors at the time of the alleged sexual abuse. The youngest accuser was 9 years old, with another 15-year-old alleged accuser.
Buzbee claimed the alleged abuse began as early as 1991, with reported incidents happening into 2024. Victims, who are scattered around the country in states including California, Florida, Georgia and New York, came forward after Combs was indicted by federal prosecutors.
“When we talk about the ages of the victims when the conduct occurred, it’s shocking,” Buzbee said during the press conference. “The youngest victim at the time of the occurrence was 9 years old. We have an individual who was 14 years old. We have one who was 15. Twenty-five of the 120 individuals who are plaintiffs in these cases were minors at the time of the acts complained of.”

“As Mr. Combs’ legal team has emphasized, he cannot address every meritless allegation in what has become a reckless media circus,” Combs’ attorney, Erica Wolff, stated. “That said, Mr. Combs emphatically and categorically denies as false and defamatory any claim that he sexually abused anyone, including minors. He looks forward to proving his innocence and vindicating himself in court, where the truth will be established based on evidence, not speculation.”

Combs was arrested on Sept. 16 and later charged with sex trafficking crimes. He remains behind bars after both of his attempts to be released on bail were denied.
Authorities alleged Combs ran a criminal enterprise through his businesses, including Bad Boy Entertainment, Combs Enterprises and Combs Global, among others. He used “firearms, threats of violence, coercion, and verbal, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse” to fulfill his sexual desires, according to the unsealed indictment obtained by Fox News Digital.
Combs and his employees would “intimidate, threaten, and lure female victims into Comb’s orbit, often under the pretense of a romantic relationship. Combs allegedly then used force, threats of force, and coercion, to cause victims to engage in extended sex acts with male commercial sex workers that Combs referred to as, among other things, ‘Freak Offs.'”

FDA urges consumers to discard millions of eggs as recall reaches highest level
Officials are continuing to warn consumers about an ongoing egg recall that has now been upgraded to Class I, meaning that the eggs may cause “serious adverse health consequences or death.”
Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC, which is based in Bonduel, Wisconsin, has been recalling its eggs since September, when officials tied the eggs to a salmonella outbreak. The recall pertains to all eggs branded “Milo’s Poultry Farms” and “Tony’s Fresh Market” with all expiration dates.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed the recall’s latest Class I status to FOX Business on Monday. The FDA’s website says that Class I recalls are “situation[s] in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
According to the FDA’s website, the recall impacts 345,417 dozen cartons of eggs – equaling more than four million eggs in total. The eggs were sold to stores and restaurants in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan over the summer.

The CDC says that 65 consumers fell ill from the eggs and 24 others were hospitalized, but there have been no deaths. Sicknesses were reported in Virginia, Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado, Utah and California.
The recall began after the FDA found out the eggs tested positive for salmonella.
“The recall was initiated after the FDA informed the company that environmental samples tested positive for the bacteria,” a press release from the FDA read.
“The FDA also conducted whole genome sequencing and found that the samples were related to an ongoing salmonella outbreak investigation.”

Salmonella causes fever, vomiting and dehydration, and can be especially deadly to senior citizens and children.

WH briefing comes to abrupt end after heated exchange on Lebanon funding after Helene
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre got into a heated exchange with Fox News Channel’s Peter Doocy over the White House sending aid to Lebanon during the hurricane season, which has had devastating effects on North Carolina.
Harris pledged Saturday to send $157 million of “additional assistance” to Lebanon while Israel attacks Hezbollah infrastructure and targets in the country. Harris argued the country was “facing an increasingly dire humanitarian situation.”
Doocy asked Jean-Pierre Monday about the Biden administration asking Congress for approval to fund Small Business Association disaster loans to help areas hit by Hurricane Helene, but not to send funds to a foreign country.
“On this issue of funding, the administration has money to send to Lebanon without Congress coming back. But Congress does have to come back to approve money to send to people in North Carolina. Do I have that right?” Doocy said.
“The president and the vice president has had a robust whole-of-government response to this… More than $200 million …for the disaster help,” Jean-Pierre responded, adding that “people want to do disinformation, misinformation, which is dangerous because then when folks on the ground hear that, they may not want to ask for the help that they need that is there for them.”

“But President Biden is fond of saying, ‘show me your budget and I will tell you what you value,’” Doocy said. “If he’s got money for people in Lebanon right now without Congress having to come back, what does it say about his values? “Your whole premise of the question is misinformation, sir,” Jean-Pierre responded, as the two engaged in a heated back and forth.
Doocy asked whether the president’s letter to Congress saying there’s not enough money for SBA disaster loans was misinformation.
“No. The way you’re asking me the question is misinformation. There is money that we are allocating to the impacted areas, and there’s money there to help people who truly need it. There are survivors who need the funding, who need the funding. And it’s there,” she said.
“You can’t call a question you don’t like misinformation,” Doocy said.

“No, what you’re asking me is why Congress needs to come back and do their job. That’s what you’re asking me. That’s what Congress needs to do,” she responded. “You may not want that, but that’s okay. That’s what this president wants, and that’s what the vice president wants.”
Jean-Pierre then stormed out of the briefing room.
The administration has been accused of mismanaging funds after Homeland Security’s Alejandro Mayorkas said Wednesday “FEMA does not have the funds to make it through the season.”
Critics on social media were quick to slam Harris for touting the foreign aid to Lebanon, arguing that many North Carolina residents are struggling to recover from Hurricane Helene.
“Kamala is touting giving money to the people of Lebanon-while stiff-arming the humanitarian crisis in North Carolina,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said on X. “This is Kamala’s Katrina.”
“Could this be any more tone deaf? We have Americans suffering and in danger right now after the hurricane and this is what Kamala has to announce. America First!” Rep. Nick Langworthy, R-N.Y., said on X.
The controversial tweet comes as the Biden administration has continued to face backlash for its handling of Helene, with former President Trump calling the federal response to the disaster the “most incompetently managed ‘storm,’ at the federal level, ever seen before.”

Andrew Garfield says intimate scene with Florence Pugh went further than it should have
Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh accidentally took their sex scene in the upcoming film, “We Live In Time,” “further” than needed.
Garfield explained that he and Pugh did not hear the directors yell “cut” while filming the intimate scene and ended up taking it “further” than what was necessary for the film.
“We were getting into it, as it were, and we go a little bit further than we meant,” Garfield told Josh Horowitz in a fan-captured video uploaded to X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Just because we never heard ‘cut,’ and it was feeling safe,” he explained.

Costco can’t keep up with customer demand for one item despite its $2,689 price tag
The gold rush that started last year at Costco locations across the U.S. is continuing as bars keep selling at a time when bullion prices are soaring, according to a Bloomberg survey.
Costco’s website shows 1-ounce gold bars were available for purchase for $2,689.99 before tax, but are now sold out, leading to members rushing to stores. Costco’s prices undercut traditional precious metal dealers and offer rewards for members, Bloomberg reports.
“It’s a great experience overall,” Sourav Sethia, a 33-year-old analytics engineer from New Jersey, told the media outlet. “I get calls from Costco whenever gold bars arrive as I am a previous buyer. So whenever I see the price has pulled back, I rush to Costco to buy one.”
While Costco did not immediately respond to a FOX Business inquiry, Bloomberg’s survey showed that approximately 77% of Costco stores that stock bullion bars were sold out in the first week of October. That percentage is based on phone calls to 101 stores in 46 states, all of which staff said had received new stock of the gold bars recently.

The product listing said the platinum bars have a one-transaction, five-unit limit for Costco members.
