Senator targets officials who ‘abuse offices’ with harsh new fraud penalties
FIRST ON FOX: A Senate Republican wants to crack down on public officials who use their position to grow their wealth.
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, is set to introduce legislation that would create stiffer penalties for public officials who commit federal bank fraud, tax fraud, or loan or mortgage fraud. Cornyn’s bill comes on the heels of two such instances where top officials and lawmakers were hit with allegations of mortgage fraud.
FEDERAL HOUSING OFFICIAL SUBMITTED SCHIFF CRIMINAL REFERRAL TO DOJ OVER MORTGAGE DOCUMENTS
Indeed, Cornyn’s Law Enforcement Tools to Interdict Troubling Investments in Abodes (LETITIA) Act is named for New York Attorney General Letitia James.
The Justice Department earlier this year opened an investigation into James, who successfully won a civil case last year against President Donald Trump and his Trump Organization over allegations of faulty business practices, for alleged mortgage fraud.
DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE OPENS CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION INTO NY AG LETITIA JAMES
Federal Housing Finance Director Bill Pulte alleged in a letter that James could have engaged in mortgage fraud by making false or misleading statements on property records, like a loan application that said her property in Virginia is her primary residence, a building record stating her multifamily Brooklyn property incorrectly has five residences instead of four, and a mortgage application that falsely stated James was her father’s spouse.
“This legislation would empower President Trump to hold crooked politicians like New York’s Letitia James accountable for defrauding their constituents, violating their oath of office, and breaking the law, and I’m proud to lead my Republican colleagues in introducing it,” Cornyn said in a statement.
Fox News Digital reached out to James for comment but did not immediately hear back.
TAXPAYERS COULD BE FORCED TO FUND TRUMP FOE LETITIA JAMES’ LEGAL DEFENSE IF DEM BUDGET ITEM PASSES
Cornyn’s bill also comes after his colleague Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., was similarly hit with allegations of mortgage fraud.
In another letter to the Justice Department, Pulte charged that Schiff falsified bank documents and property records by listing homes in Maryland and California as his primary residence out of an effort to allegedly get more favorable loans.
Marisol Samayoa, a spokesperson for Schiff, said in a statement to Fox News Digital that both Trump and Pulte’s “false allegations are a transparent attempt to punish a perceived political foe who is committed to holding Trump to account.”
“The facts here are simple: Senator Schiff and his wife accurately represented to their lenders that they would occupy and use the Maryland house they purchased in 2003 as a ‘principal residence,’ rather than a vacation home or an investment property,” she said. “He also disclosed to his lenders – repeatedly – that he maintained another home in his district in California, where he lived when not in Washington, and which was also a principal residence, not a vacation home or an investment property.”
“This was done in consultation with relevant House counsel. As was proper, he claimed only a single homestead tax exemption (from California) worth approximately $70 in annual savings,” she continued.
The bill, which is so far co-sponsored by six Senate Republicans, would increase federal statutory maximum sentences and fines for public officials who abuse their offices and violate the public trust to commit bank fraud, loan or mortgage fraud, or tax fraud.

It would create new mandatory minimum sentences, including one year for bank fraud, one year for loan or mortgage fraud, and six months for tax fraud. And if a public official engages in a repeated pattern of offenses, minimum sentences increase to five years for bank or loan fraud and two years for tax fraud.
Bank of America’s CEO reacts to weak jobs report after Trump fires BLS chief
Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan said in an interview on Sunday that the president’s firing of the Bureau of Labor Statistics commissioner following a weak jobs report was due to politics, though he said government employment data should be improved.
Moynihan appeared on CBS News’ “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” and was asked whether he’s concerned about the president firing the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) commissioner and whether he feels there is political pressure.
“Well, I think that’s more politics,” Moynihan said, adding that he thinks the agency’s data collection processes have seen lower levels of responses in recent years, which have contributed to revisions of the monthly jobs report.
“It’s 2025 and the data should be able to be – they use surveys and things like that, which, frankly, just aren’t as effective anymore. So if you look at the rate of people who respond to their surveys, it’s down from 60% level to 50% level,” he explained.
TRUMP ORDERS TERMINATION OF LABOR STATISTICS OFFICIAL AFTER JOBS REPORT AND DOWNWARD REVISIONS
Moynihan said Bank of America doesn’t use surveys to assess labor market data and instead relies on its data to gauge what businesses and consumers are doing.
“We watch what consumers do. We watch what businesses do. They can get this data, I think, other ways and I think that’s where the focus ought to be,” Moynihan said of the BLS.
“How do we get the data to be more resilient and more predictable and more understandable? Because what bounces around is restatements, and that was one of the largest restatements, going back five or seven years in the pandemic, five years in the pandemic, that creates doubt around it,” he added.
“And so I think the key is, let’s get – let’s spend some money. Let’s bring the information together. Let’s find where else in the government money is reported. We report millions and millions of data points to the government every day. The data is out there somewhere,” Moynihan said.
US JOB GROWTH COOLED IN JULY AMID GROWING ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTY
The BLS reported its July jobs report on Friday, which showed the U.S. economy added 73,000 jobs last month – well below the gain of 110,000 jobs estimated by economists polled by LSEG.
The agency also reported what it called a “larger than normal” set of downward revisions to job gains the prior two months, with May’s gain of 144,000 jobs revised down by 125,000 to just 19,000 jobs added, while June’s gain of 147,000 jobs was revised down by 133,000 to 14,000.
Those two revisions left employment levels in May and June with 258,000 fewer jobs than previously reported. Goldman Sachs economists noted that it was the largest two-month revision for May and June since 1968 outside of recessions, based on the assumption that the U.S. isn’t currently in a recession.
President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform to announce that he directed his administration to fire BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer, accusing her of manipulating the jobs figures for political purposes.
WHITE HOUSE ECONOMIST BACKS TRUMP FIRING LABOR STATS HEAD, HITS ‘PARTISAN PATTERN’ IN JOBS DATA: ‘PROPAGANDA’
“I was just informed that our Country’s ‘Jobs Numbers’ are being produced by a Biden Appointee, Dr. Erika McEntarfer, the Commissioner of Labor Statistics, who faked the Jobs Numbers before the Election to try and boost Kamala’s chances of Victory,” Trump wrote. “This is the same Bureau of Labor Statistics that overstated the Jobs Growth in March 2024 by approximately 818,000 and, then again, right before the 2024 Presidential Election, in August and September, by 112,000. These were Records – No one can be that wrong?”
“We need accurate Jobs Numbers. I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified,” Trump continued. “Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they can’t be manipulated for political purposes. McEntarfer said there were only 73,000 Jobs added (a shock!) but, more importantly, that a major mistake was made by them, 258,000 Jobs downward, in the two prior months. Similar things happened in the first part of the year, always to the negative.”
TRUMP CALLS FIRED BLS COMMISSIONER’S JOB NUMBERS THE ‘BIGGEST MISCALCULATIONS IN OVER 50 YEARS’
McEntarfer was confirmed by the Senate as BLS commissioner in January 2024 on a broadly bipartisan vote of 86-8. Current vice president and then-Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, was among the senators voting in support of her confirmation.
Trump said in comments over the weekend that his administration will “announce a new statistician sometime over the next 3, 4 days,” adding that “we had no confidence, the numbers were ridiculous that she announced” and that “it’s a scam, in my opinion.”

The president on Monday continued to claim that the jobs report was manipulated, writing on Truth Social:
“Last weeks Job’s Report was RIGGED, just like the numbers prior to the Presidential Election were Rigged. That’s why, in both cases, there was massive, record setting revisions, in favor of the Radical Left Democrats. Those big adjustments were made to cover up, and level out, the FAKE political numbers that were CONCOCTED in order to make a great Republican Success look less stellar!!! I will pick an exceptional replacement. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAGA!”
New Hall of Famer’s celebration goes horribly wrong on stage during induction ceremony
Jared Allen did not disappoint on stage in Canton over the weekend.
The former NFL star took the stage at the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday to be officially inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Allen was a part of the class that also included Sterling Sharpe, Eric Allen, and Antonio Gates.

Well, after he received his brand-new gold jacket, he wanted to turn back the clock and do his signature sack celebration.
Unfortunately for Allen, suit pants don’t have as much give as football pants.
When Allen stood up, he realized that he had a major rip on the back of his pants, stretching from his rear all the way to near the kneecap.
The 2004 fourth-round pick played for four teams in his 12-year career, most notably the Minnesota Vikings, in which he racked up four All-Pros, five Pro Bowls and 136 sacks.

Locals react to Cincinnati melee with questions about violent crime rate
CINCINNATI – Cincinnati residents say that the viral July 26 downtown beatdown that gripped the nation does not define their city, though some say violent crime is an issue.
“I don’t think it’s accurate,” Josh Pels, a downtown bartender, told Fox News Digital. “I would say the crime and violent crime in particular has gone up, I would say, over the course of the last six months for sure. [The Over-the-Rhine area] usually has it worse than we have it down here, but there’s definitely been an uptick in violent crime.”
In the video, a group of people can be seen pummeling two victims, one of whom ended up with “very bad brain trauma.” The incident occurred in the early morning hours of July 26 on the corner of Fourth and Elm Street, outside a popular nightclub.
DOJ, FBI INVESTIGATE BRUTAL CINCINNATI ASSAULT CAPTURED IN VIRAL VIDEO
Another angle of the fight shows a victim being beaten in the middle of the street and yelling racial slurs. Some claim the male victim slapped one of the perpetrators before the fight, sparking the beatdown.
Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge said in a Friday press conference that there are a total of six victims. Six people have been charged with crimes, and four have been arrested. The city’s fugitive task force is searching for the two suspects who are still at large.
Corey Mitchell is also a Cincinnati resident. He said the city doesn’t typically have problems like the brawl.
“So that was just an action-reaction type of thing,” he said. “That ain’t no big deal. They could put it up in the news and seem like it’s a prejudiced place or something like that. But that’s just an action and a reaction that happened, and disagreements. That was about it.”
Robert Brown, a life-long resident, agreed. He said Cincinnati has “probably less fights than other cities,” and that social media amplified the beating to a level that put the city in the spotlight.
CINCINNATI BUSINESS OWNERS SLAM VIRAL ‘OUT OF CONTROL’ BEATING AMID FIGHT TO CLEAN UP DOWNTOWN
He also said that while brutal, the victim who he said slapped a man in the crowd and kicked off the beatdown, should have expected repercussions.
“Well, I mean … all the extra stuff after the smack really wasn’t warranted,” he said, adding that the perpetrators “may have took it too far.”
“At the same time, he still shouldn’t have smacked him. You know what I mean? You know, to start the whole situation off, so, you put your hands on somebody, you’re going to be ready for the repercussions,” said Brown.
A fourth resident described her immediate reaction after seeing the fight.
“I was in shock by what I saw,” said Shirley Blair. “I was busy surfing through the internet, making calls, trying to figure out there’s gotta be a backstory behind this. And apparently there were other things that happened leading up to that.”
Blair said she hopes the brawl doesn’t spiral into something even more serious.
“And in the back of my mind I wonder, okay, what’s gonna happen next? Can we sit down and talk about the situation? Is it gonna spring into something else?”
POLICE IDENTIFY MULTIPLE SUSPECTS IN BRUTAL CINCINNATI STREET FIGHT: ‘CRUEL AND ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE’
Local police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are still sorting out all the actions leading up to the fight.
In a Friday press conference, Mayor Aftab Pureval warned that everyone seen fighting will face consequences, vowing “further investigation, further charges and further arrests for every single person involved.”
Montianez Merriweather, 34, and Dekyra Vernon, 24, were arrested Tuesday night. Both face felonious assault, aggravated riot and assault charges. Merriweather is being held on a $500,000 bond, while Vernon is being held on a $200,000 bond. They remain in jail as of Monday morning.
Jermaine Matthews, 39, was released from Hamilton County Jail on Friday after paying a combined $270,000 bond. He was hit with five charges stemming from the beatdown, two counts of assault, two counts of felony assault and aggravated riot for his alleged participation in the brutal brawl.

Texas lawmaker unleashes vulgar attack on Trump, vows to target Supreme Court
Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, did not hold back when sharing her opinion of President Donald Trump during a progressive rally on Sunday.
The firebrand congresswoman from Texas urged the Democratic Party to get aggressive against the administration at the Phoenix stop of MoveOn’s “Won’t Back Down Tour,” hitting Trump with the obscene description in the process.
“Listen, Donald Trump is a piece of s—. OK, we know that,” she said, as the crowd cheered her on.
TEXAS DEMOCRATS THREATEN TO FLEE STATE AND BREAK QUORUM OVER REDISTRICTING PLAN
Crockett joined fellow Democratic lawmakers, Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., for the rally held by the political advocacy group to inspire voters ahead of next year’s midterm elections.
Ahead of her slam on Trump, the congresswoman said in the clip flagged by Mediaite she’s confident that a Democratic candidate will win the 2028 presidential election, and laid out the strategy the party should have to secure that victory.
“But what are we going to need to do then?” she asked. “For me, it’s getting aggressive.”
“Now listen, I’m not going to say that’s what we’re going to do, but I’m telling y’all what my vision’s [going to] be,” she continued, pointing to limiting the Supreme Court, which she called “corrupt.”
JASMINE CROCKETT DOESN’T KNOW IF SHE’S ‘THE FUTURE’ OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY
“We need to have some real guardrails around this Supreme Court because the Supreme Court has paved the way for half the stuff that we see that’s going on.”
She then used the expletive against Trump but argued that it’s Congress and the high court that need to be reined in because they’re the institutions allowing him to implement his agenda.
“But in a functioning democracy, he still would not be able to get away with this. But he’s been able to get away with this because the House Republicans are complicit. He’s been able to get away with this because Senate Republicans are complicit. But most importantly, the courts, especially the Supreme Court, is complicit,” she said.
She added that the court has “no ethics guardrail,” while lower courts do.

“How much sense does that make when we know that they’re taking money – we have the paper trail – and they refuse to put guardrails on themselves?” she asked.
The left-wing lawmaker has frequently traded barbs with the president over the past few months.
On her X account, Crockett has gone as far as to label Trump a “buffoon” and a “mofo,” the abbreviated version of the word “mother—-er.”
Trump has mocked the idea of Crockett being the future of the Democratic Party and called her “low IQ.”

CNBC host battles Sen Warren over raising taxes and affordability in New York City
CNBC host David Faber battled Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., over raising taxes in New York City and Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani’s economic policy proposals on Monday in a fiery back and forth.
“You mentioned Mamdani and you are in New York sort of speaking on behalf of him to a certain extent,” Faber said on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street.” “New York does not operate in a vacuum. It competes with other cities. And so this idea of somehow raising taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers, who, by the way, would point out pay roughly 15 percent of their income right now between city and state. Raising taxes on them will simply drive them away.”
“Shouldn’t the focus of a mayor be on delivering services to the constituents of the city and doing that by raising the most revenue as possible without chasing businesses and the high-income taxpayers out of the city?” he asked. “Because they can go to Austin. They can go to Dallas. They can go to Atlanta. They can go to Nashville. This is your issue. It’s a national issue, not a local issue.”
MAMDANI CONFRONTED ON STREETS OF NYC ABOUT ‘COMMUNIST’ LABEL, REFUSES TO ANSWER
Warren argued the issue was affordability and argued New Yorkers can’t afford groceries or housing in the city, as Faber agreed that affordability was a problem but pushed back and asked, “But raising taxes in order to do it – why is that the answer?”
“Oh dear, are you worried that billionaires are going to go hungry?” Warren mockingly responded.
“No, I’m worried that they’re going to leave and spend their money elsewhere!” Faber hit back.
Warren said that billionaires always threaten to do that, while Faber argued that big companies actually do move elsewhere.
“They’ve left. And Goldman Sachs, when they create new jobs, they do it in Dallas. And Blackstone won’t build a new headquarters. I can go on and on,” Faber said.
Warren said New York needed people who could live and work in the city as she continued to argue that childcare affordability and grocery prices were a problem.
FMR. OBAMA TREASURY SEC. CONCERNED ZOHRAN MAMDANI WILL HURT NEW YORK CITY IF ELECTED MAYOR
“These are national issues,” Faber said. “But if you deal with them in that way, by what is always your backup, just tax them more. They will leave.”
“I think many people would disagree to the extent that by raising taxes and making it more onerous for businesses that create the jobs, that create the revenues on which taxes are – tax revenues come from, that you’d ultimately be dealing with a smaller pie. He may succeed by driving everybody out. Rents will go down,” Faber said as Warren kept her argument focused on billionaires.
“If you think that the best way to run city government or national government is to start with the billionaires and say, what will work best for you? Vote Republican,” she said. “But if you don’t, then let’s make the city more affordable. Let’s make the country more affordable. And the way we do that, let’s focus on housing. Let’s focus on groceries.”

Faber argued that these were national issues that senators like Warren should be focusing on before pointing to Mamdani’s inexperience.

European officials outraged by ‘sickening’ Hamas videos of emaciated hostages
Leaders from across Europe responded in horror on Sunday to the recent footage released by Hamas of Israeli captives Rom Braslavski and Evyatar David, who were taken hostage nearly 670 days ago.
French President Emmanuel Macron took to X to call the clearly emancipated state of both hostages a depiction of Hamas’ “unlimited inhumanity” and decried it as “abject cruelty.”
“This is what Hamas embodies,” he added.
NETANYAHU RESPONDS AFTER ISRAELI HOSTAGE SEEN EMACIATED, DIGGING GRAVE: ‘CRUELTY OF HAMAS HAS NO BOUNDARIES’
Macron — who sent geopolitical shockwaves when he announced late last month that France would recognize the state of Palestine come September — renewed calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the return of all hostages and the full resumption of aid to the area.
Macron on Sunday doubled down on his call for statehood and said ending the conflict is no longer enough.
“This effort must be accompanied by a political solution for the day after. That solution is the two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace. It is the only possible path toward a future where justice, security, and dignity are guaranteed for all the peoples of the region,” he said.
Macron also made clear his position when it comes to Hamas, which some, including Israel and the U.S., have questioned following his push for Palestinian statehood.
“Let there be no ambiguity: within this political vision that we uphold, we demand the total demilitarization of Hamas, its complete exclusion from any form of governance, and recognition of Israel by the State of Palestine,” he added.
Macron’s announcement prompted other Western nations to follow suit, including the U.K., Canada and even Germany — though Berlin’s position on statehood has left room for some ambiguity.
FREED AMERICAN-ISRAELI HOSTAGE DETAILS STARVATION AND ABUSE BY HAMAS AS FAMILIES PUSH TRUMP FOR DEAL
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz echoed Macron’s comments in an interview with German outlet Bild on Sunday and reportedly said the videos of the hostages “show that Hamas should no longer play a role in the future of Gaza.”
Merz also called on Israel not to block more aid to Gaza in retaliation for the cruelty.
U.K. Foreign Secretary David Lammy also took to X on Sunday and called the videos “sickening” displays of Hamas “propaganda.”
“Every hostage must be released unconditionally,” he said. “Hamas must disarm and have no control over Gaza.
“We are working with partners on a long-term solution and plan for peace. This must begin with an immediate ceasefire, that frees the hostages, as well as removing inhumane aid restrictions,” Lammy added.
The recently released footage of two of the 50 hostages still held in Gaza coincided with a trip White House envoy Steve Witkoff took to Israel late last week, during which he visited with leaders and the families of the hostages in Tel Aviv.
Reporting has suggested the U.S. is now pushing for a comprehensive deal that would include a complete ceasefire and the return of all hostages, rather than incremental deals apparently favored by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Witkoff reportedly told the families of the hostages that he believes the U.S. and the other allied nations are helping to mediate the negotiations, that a deal is close to being secured – though this belief has been expressed numerous times to no avail.
Only American hostage Edan Alexander has been released under a deal not previously forged by the Biden and the then-incoming Trump administrations, which saw the release of 33 hostages by March.
Woman hit with massive bill after bat flies into her mouth during stargazing trip
A Massachusetts woman had a scary encounter while traveling to Arizona to visit her father.
Erica Kahn was in Northern Arizona with her dad last August to take their annual pictures of the sky.
“We like to take photos of the night sky and the stars, and it’s something we’ve been doing for the past 10 years now, but this was the first time this incident occurred,” said Kahn to FOX 10.
RADIOACTIVE WASP NEST DISCOVERED BY WORKERS AT FORMER NUCLEAR BOMB SITE
While snapping photos, she said a bat flew directly into her mouth.
“I don’t know what part of the bat went into my mouth,” she said. “Maybe the wing, the head.”
“I had my strap around my camera around my head so that it wouldn’t fall down, and because of that, it kind of got trapped between my mouth and the camera,” said Kahn.
Arizona is home to 28 species of bats that assemble in areas near lights, agricultural or playing fields, ponds or other water sources, according to the Arizona Game & Fish Department (AGF).
The leading cause of human rabies death is contact with infected bats.
Kahn knew she needed to be checked for rabies immediately — and was shocked to learn that her treatment was not covered, she said.
Since she’d lost her job, she took out a new health plan with an insurance firm.
“They kind of lied to me on the phone when I said, ‘I need to go to the emergency room … tomorrow. Is this gonna be effective? Is this gonna cover [me] if I need rabies shots?’ And [the person] said, ‘Yes, yes, it’s gonna cover it. You’re good to go,’” Kahn said.
Kahn was unaware of a 30-day waiting period for coverage to kick in — which left her with a bill of over $20,000.
Fox News Digital reached out to the insurance firm for comment.

“Our healthcare system is so broken and that’s why I’m kind of happy to take these interviews,” Kahn told FOX 10.
She added, “I want to shine a light that this should not be the cost of getting a life-saving rabies vaccine.”
