NYT columnist hits Biden with a harsh truth after he tries to turn narrative about himself around

New York Times columnist David Brooks urged former President Joe Biden not to fight an “old battle” during a conversation on Friday after Biden returned to the public eye this week.

Brooks told PBS NewsHour that if Joe Biden ever called him to ask what he should do with his post-presidency, he would tell the former president to “be post-political, rise above it and don’t get back in, don’t try to fight old battle.”

Biden spoke to BBC and “The View” this week after the 2024 election, blaming former Vice President Kamala Harris’ loss on sexism and racism. He also answered questions about his alleged cognitive decline and maintained that he could have beaten Trump.

PBS NewsHour host Geoff Bennett also asked Brooks if there was any strategic value in saying that he would have beaten the sitting president following his former VP’s failed attempt.

AGE-OLD SENIORITY QUESTION DIVIDES DEMOCRATS AS BIDEN RETURNS TO NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT

“You know, I think he’s empirically wrong about that. Kamala Harris ran about as good a campaign as she could. She was saddled with the Biden legacy, an unpopular presidency. Biden would have been saddled by that legacy in addition to his age. So, you take those two factors, it’s hard to see how he wins,” Brooks said.

During the interview, the former president pushed back on criticism that Harris didn’t have enough time to run an effective campaign, alleging that she had six months to do so. The former vice president had around 90 days.

“But, he’s a proud man with a chip on his shoulder who feels himself under attack, frankly, in the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, and so he wants to stand up for himself,” he continued.

The New York Times columnist also suggested Biden should avoid the partisan mud.

“I would only counsel him as someone who’s a longtime admirer of Joe Biden, is that what we want from our presidents is not more politics. What we want from our presidents is somebody who’s post-politics, who can speak to us from a higher level, not in the partisan mud. And Jimmy Carter did that. I think George W. Bush has done that through his painting,” he said.

When pressed by “The View” co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin on several allegations of cognitive decline in multiple new books on the 2024 election, Biden and his wife, former first lady Jill Biden, fired back.

“They are wrong,” he said. “There’s nothing to sustain that, number one. Number two, you know, think of what we left with. We left with a circumstance where we had an insurrection when I started, not since the Civil War. We had a circumstance where we were in a position that we — well, the pandemic, because of the incompetence of the last outfit, end up over a million people dying, a million people dying. And we’re also in a situation where we found ourselves unable to deal with a lot of just basic issues, which I won’t go into in the interest of time. And so we went to work, and we got it done and, you know, one of the things that — well, I’m—”

The former first lady then jumped in and said, “one of the things I think is that the people who wrote those books were not in the White House with us.”

“And they didn’t see how hard Joe worked every single day. I mean, he’d get up. He’d put in a full day, and then at night he would — I’d be in bed, you know, reading my book, and he was still on the phone, reading his briefings. Working with staff. I mean, it was nonstop,” Jill Biden said.

Trump admin vows American parents will sleep better — hints at what’s about to unfold

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino shared a detailed update Saturday about the bureau’s operations, making clear the agency is focused on removing dangerous criminals and protecting children.

In a post on X, Bongino outlined several priorities and took aim at what he called misleading media coverage of the FBI’s work.

“The workforce has been working overtime on task force operations to remove dangerous illegal aliens from the country. The work continues,” Bongino wrote. “If you came here illegally to prey on our citizens, your days here are numbered.”

He said these operations are only getting started and will ramp up in the coming weeks.

RUBIO JUST GOT AN ADDITIONAL JOB IN TRUMP’S ADMINISTRATION — AND HE’S NOT THE ONLY ONE WEARING MULTIPLE HATS

“These removal and incarceration operations will dramatically change the crime landscape in the country when combined with the administration’s laser-focus on sealing the border shut,” he added.

Bongino also pointed to a new initiative focused on protecting children from predators.

“Crimes against children are a priority for the workforce. Operation ‘Restoring Justice,’ where we locked up child predators and 764 subjects, in every part of the country, is just the beginning,” he said. “We are going to take your freedom if you take away a child’s innocence.”

He promised more enforcement efforts to come and warned those targeting children to “think twice.”

205 ARRESTED IN FBI CHILD SEX OPERATION, PATEL AND BONDI ANNOUNCE

Bongino addressed the FBI’s efforts to respond to Congress and the public about several high-profile cases. These include the attack on Rep. Steve Scalise, the Nashville school shooting, the Crossfire Hurricane investigation and the origins of COVID-19. He also mentioned the ongoing work with the Department of Justice in the Jeffrey Epstein case.

“There are voluminous amounts of downloaded child sexual abuse material that we are dealing with,” he wrote. “There are also victims’ statements that are entitled to specific protections. We need to do this correctly, but I do understand the public’s desire to get the information out there.”

He also responded to what he described as false stories being spread by some in the media and came to the defense of FBI Director Patel

“He spends anywhere between 10 to 12 hours in the office attending meetings with everyone from foreign heads of law enforcement to our counter-terror teams,” Bongino wrote. “Any assertion otherwise is a verifiable lie designed to stop our reforms and fracture your trust. I will die on this hill. You are being clearly lied to by people with an agenda, and it’s not your agenda.”

He closed by thanking the public for its attention and encouraged Americans to keep watching the FBI’s progress.

“God bless America, and all those who defend Her,” he wrote.

Dan Bongino began his law enforcement career with the New York Police Department in 1995. He joined the United States Secret Service in 1999 and later served on the elite Presidential Protective Division for presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

After leaving government service, Bongino ran for office as a Republican in Maryland and Florida. Bongino also hosted a Saturday night show on Fox News Channel from 2021 to 2023.

He is the author of several books, including “Life Inside the Bubble,” a memoir about his time in the Secret Service.

The FBI did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Steve Irwin’s daughter rushed into emergency surgery — not long after another health battle

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Bindi Irwin was forced to miss the annual Steve Irwin Gala due to a medical emergency.

On Saturday, her brother Robert Irwin revealed that Bindi underwent immediate surgery due to a ruptured appendix.

“She’s going to be OK, but surgery – out of all the things we were ready for, that was not one of them,” Robert told People magazine at the event in Las Vegas. “She’s just come out the other side of endometriosis and now the appendix goes. Health is so important – it really is. Bindi has become an incredible advocate for women’s health, particularly, and I think it’s really important to prioritize getting help.”

“She came to Las Vegas and was ready to come to the gala, put on a brave face in a lot of discomfort and a lot of pain and said, ‘Nope, I’m just going to tough it out, I’m going to go for it,'” he added. “But the surgeon said, ‘No, your appendix is going. That thing’s gotta come out.’ Health has to come first. She’s very sad. She’s devastated that she and Mom can’t be here, but I know she’ll make a speedy recovery.”

BINDI IRWIN REVEALS SHE UNDERWENT SURGERY FOR ENDOMETRIOSIS AFTER SUFFERING ‘INSURMOUNTABLE’ PAIN FOR 10 YEARS

That same day, Bindi took to social media to share some photos of her family in Las Vegas to honor her father, the late crocodile hunter.

“Khaki by day – Bellagio chic by night! Here in #LasVegas for the #SteveIrwinGala raising funds and awareness for Wildlife Warriors,” the 26-year-old wrote on Instagram.. “Supporting conservation and remembering Dad’s extraordinary legacy. Enormous gratitude to everyone for your support as we continue to do all that we can to protect wildlife and wild places for the future generations.”

Fox News Digital reached out to a representative for Bindi Irwin, but they did not immediately respond.

This is not the first health scare Bindi has encountered. In 2023, the mom of one revealed an endometriosis diagnosis that also required surgery.

“My life now looks completely different than it did before I had my surgery,” Irwin told Fox News Digital at the time. “Over the 10 years that I was really battling with endo[metriosis] without knowing it, I would get progressively worse every week and in the end, before my surgery, I was barely able to get out of bed.”

Irwin, who described the pain she experienced as a “stabbing feeling” and “really scary,” revealed in March that she endured the painful condition for 10 years and struggled for a proper diagnosis.

On her social media post announcing the news, the 25-year-old shared that she had 37 lesions and a “chocolate cyst” removed from her body, and noted that the first words from her doctor during recovery were, “‘How did you live with this much pain?’”

“And now on the other side of surgery, I mean, I’m going for daily zoo walks with my family. I’m able to go to our management meetings and check up on our animals and do the filming work that I love and play with my daughter. And it is just so wonderful. I feel like I see the world in a new way now. I’m able to actually do things again.”

“It does feel like a second chance at life,” she added.

Secret staircase uncovered beneath Capitol floorboards — here’s what it was used for

Under the floorboards of the U.S. Capitol lie hidden staircases and passageways left over from the iconic building’s original construction in the 18th century, a viral video posted by Republican North Carolina Rep. Tim Moore shows.

“Construction started in the 1700s and there are all sorts of little hidden passageways. As you saw, I just pulled this cover up, and you can see,” Moore said in a video posted to his official congressional X account on Friday, showing a secret door in the floor of the Capitol.

The U.S. Capitol’s construction was commissioned in 1793, with President George Washington laying the cornerstone that same year. The original building was completed in 1826, with various expansions made across the decades, such as a visitor center that opened in 2008.

SECRETS OF THE CAPITOL ROTUNDA

Moore took viewers inside the Capitol’s Lincoln Room, which he said is one of his favorites to show visitors to Washington, D.C., noting it’s where Abraham Lincoln would sit by a fire and read letters when he served as a congressman representing Illinois from 1847-1849

“But the most interesting part of the room is underneath the floorboards,” Moore posted to X.

The North Carolina Republican opened a hidden door on the floor, revealing a dusty and historic staircase leading to what appeared to be another room below.

TRUMP TO CREATE TASK FORCE TO PLAN ‘EXTRAORDINARY CELEBRATION’ FOR 250TH ANNIVERSARY OF AMERICA’S INDEPENDENCE

“We’re just off of what’s called Statuary Hall, which at one time was the actual House chamber.… But this is just an example of some of the little hidden secrets in the Capitol,” Moore said.

The lawmaker added that he heard through Capitol building lore that the staircase under the Lincoln Room was used by British soldiers in the War of 1812 to set fire to the historic building. Known as the “Burning of Washington,” British soldiers in August 1814 set fire to the U.S. Capitol, the Washington Navy Yard and the White House – which was then known as the Presidential Mansion – before storms put out the fires and military personnel were called to D.C. to defend it from British forces. The War of 1812 ended in 1815.

TRUMP TO CREATE TASK FORCE TO PLAN ‘EXTRAORDINARY CELEBRATION’ FOR 250TH ANNIVERSARY OF AMERICA’S INDEPENDENCE

Moore’s tour of the secret staircase comes as President Donald Trump prepares to kick off America’s 250th anniversary of its founding on July 4, 2026. Trump signed an executive order just days after his inauguration this year detailing how his administration will prepare for the massive celebration, including launching a White House task force, building monuments celebrating the nation’s founding and historical leaders, and protecting monuments from vandalism following such attacks during the riots and protests that swept the nation in 2020.

Two young boys armed with a gun detained after standoff with law enforcement

A New Mexico sheriff’s office is defending its decision not to arrest two young boys, ages 7 and 9, seen in drone footage in an armed standoff with deputies.

Video released Thursday by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) shows the two boys dressed in Minecraft and Star Wars-themed pajamas standing behind a covered air-conditioning unit and carrying a loaded handgun.

In the nearly six minutes of footage shared, the children are seen looking around as if they are trying to avoid detection and capture. Eventually, the boys are surrounded and detained by deputies.

“This case illustrates the complex intersection of juvenile crime, mental health, and public safety,” Sheriff John Allen said in a statement. “We are taking important steps to close service gaps and expand our ability to work with juveniles involved in firearms or violent crimes.”

The incident took place on Feb. 16 but was highlighted on Thursday while BCSO showcased the work of its behavioral health unit and “a new initiative designed to address critical service gaps in the community,” according to a press release.

Allen said his department had been called to the home of the incident dozens of times prior to the standoff due to problems with the boys and their families, the Albuquerque Journal reported, adding that it is not known how the boys got the gun.

The newspaper said no charges have been filed against the boys and that they have not been removed from their home, although the gun seen in the video was seized.

“Children are our future, and we know one side is going to say, ‘Lock them in jail.’ They’re 7 and 9 years old. I told you before, numerous times in numerous interviews, that I understand the frontal lobe,” Allen said, according to the Albuquerque Journal.

Members of the department’s behavioral health unit are in contact with the boys’ families “providing every recourse possible to assist the children involved,” a BCSO sergeant told Fox News Digital.

BCSO said its drone “allowed deputies to secure the area swiftly and safely, ultimately preventing a potential deadly force encounter with the juveniles.”

Dem denies ICE officer clash as video emerges: ‘I honestly do not know how to body slam’

A trio of Democratic lawmakers say they were justified in “storming” an ICE facility in Newark, New Jersey, last week, arguing that President Donald Trump’s administration is “weaponizing law enforcement.”

Reps. LaMonica McIver, Bonnie Watson Coleman and Rob Menendez, all Democrats from New Jersey, made the comments during a joint appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday.

“Chaos ensued when someone on the phone above the leaders of ICE who were with us at that facility instructed them to go out of the facility, go to the private property and lock the mayor of the largest city in the state of New Jersey up,” Coleman said.

“That’s absurd. That’s un-American. That’s scary. That’s determination to intimidate people in this country,” she added, claiming the administration is “lying at all levels.

The three lawmakers stormed Delaney Hall Detention Center in Newark last week in an incident that was caught on video. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was also present and was arrested and charged with trespassing. Authorities claim an ICE agent was assaulted in the confrontation, which was caught on camera.

McIver also responded to accusations from the Department of Homeland Security that she “body slammed” law enforcement officers during the incident.

“I honestly do not know how to body slam anyone. There’s no video that supports me body slamming anyone,” she told CNN’s Dana Bash.

Mendez argued that it was the responsibility of the ICE officers and other law enforcement to ensure the situation didn’t get out of hand.

“There were a lot of opportunities for DHS, for ICE to de-escalate the situation. They chose not to,” Menendez said. “It’s something that should really shock all Americans.”

While the lawmakers objected to ICE detentions, they also admitted that they saw evidence that the inmates were well-treated and living in good conditions inside the facility.

During a press conference after the incident, McIver claimed she was “assaulted by multiple ICE officers while regional directors of ICE watched it happen.”

DHS footage posted to X Saturday appears to show McIver barreling unprovoked through law enforcement near the gate.

Hamas claims it will release last living American hostage Edan Alexander held in Gaza

Hamas claimed on Sunday that it would release American hostage Edan Alexander.

Alexander, a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen, has been held captive in Gaza since the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel.

“As part of the efforts made by the brotherly mediators to achieve a ceasefire, Hamas has been in contact with the U.S. administration in recent days,” a statement, translated into English from Arabic, from the terror organization said.

“The movement has shown a high level of positivity, and the Israeli soldier with dual American citizenship, [Edan] Alexander, will be released as part of the steps being taken toward a ceasefire, the opening of border crossings, and the entry of aid and relief for our people in the Gaza Strip,” the statement continued.

PALESTINIAN LEADER DEMANDS HAMAS RELEASE REMAINING HOSTAGES

It’s unclear when Alexander could be released.

Fox News learned that the United States had informed Israel of Hamas’s intention to release Alexander as “a gesture to Americans, without compensation or conditions.”

The United States told Israel that this move is “expected to lead to negotiations for the release of hostages,” according to the original framework, laid out by Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, which Israel has already accepted.

PARENTS OF HAMAS HOSTAGES URGE TRUMP TO BE ‘TOUGH WITH ENEMIES AND FRIENDS’ AMID ISRAELI SIEGE IN GAZA

Israel is preparing for the possibility that this move will be carried out.

According to Israeli policy, negotiations will take place under fire, with a commitment to achieving all the objectives of the war.

Khalil al-Hayya, who is Hamas’ political chief in Gaza, echoed the statement, reiterating “the movement has shown a high level of positivity” when speaking about the effort to free Alexander.

GAZANS SPEAK OUT AGAINST HAMAS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 18 YEARS

“The Hamas movement affirms its readiness to immediately begin intensive negotiations and make serious efforts to reach a final agreement to end the war, exchange prisoners as mutually agreed upon, and manage the Gaza Strip by an independent, professional body, ensuring sustained calm and stability for many years, alongside reconstruction and ending the siege,” al-Hayya shared in a statement.

Raised in Tenafly, New Jersey, Alexander moved to Israel at 18 to volunteer for military service in the IDF’s Golani Brigade. He lived with his grandparents in Tel Aviv and at Kibbutz Hazor, where he was part of a group of lone soldiers.

He was kidnapped on the morning of October 7 — a Saturday, he wasn’t required to remain on base. His mother was visiting from abroad, and like many lone soldiers, he had the option to go home for the weekend. But he chose to stay, not wanting to leave his comrades short-staffed on guard duty.

There are 59 hostages still in Gaza, at least 24 of whom are assessed to be alive, including American-Israeli Alexander, now 21 years old after having spent two birthdays in Hamas captivity.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum Headquarters also released a statement following the announcement of Alexander’s potential release, saying that they “are embracing and supporting the Alexander family.”

“Should this release be confirmed, the release of Edan Alexander must mark the beginning of a comprehensive agreement that will secure the freedom of all remaining hostages,” the statement read.

“President Trump, you’ve given the families of all the hostages hope. Please, complete your mission and bring them all home.”

Several days ago, President Trump marked his 100th day in office, and the families of the five Americans still held hostage urged him to reflect on his strategy and apply pressure on both Israel and Hamas, through both economic and diplomatic means, to secure the release of all 59 hostages.

While there is evident frustration among the families of the hostages, who have made clear the Israeli government has not offered anywhere near the same level of support or communication provided by both the Biden and Trump administrations, they said that, ultimately, the adversary is the terrorist organization that captured, in some instances, and continues to hold captive their loved ones.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu must immediately fulfill the supreme moral obligation — and the demand of the vast majority of the Israeli public — to bring everyone back: the living for rehabilitation and the deceased for proper burial in our country,” the organization said. “No one should be left behind.”

Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.

Cops hunting decades-old disappearance stunned by discovery

What started as a way for a pair of two Illinois detectives to crowdsource tips to solve decades-old cold cases ended in a shocking discovery.

Detectives Andrew Houghton and Matt Vartanian were looking to breathe new life into unsolved cases by launching the true-crime podcast, “Somebody Knows Something,” in October 2024 at the request of Elgin Police Department Chief Ana Lalley. Their goal centered around using modern investigative technology to potentially bring closure to local families.

“We both kind of looked at each other and said, ‘No, I’m not really sure that’s for us’,” Vartanian told Fox News Digital. “Then we took a step back, were open-minded in our thinking and objective, and thought that this could be a really good vehicle to utilize investigative processes within law enforcement.”

MISSING WOMAN FOUND AFTER MORE THAN 60 YEARS, SHERIFF REVEALS WHAT REALLY HAPPENED

The pair combed through open cold cases within their area, zeroing in on the disappearance of 23-year-old Karen Schepers in 1983.

Our thought was, depending on whatever case we started with or if we did multiple cases, there may be people that are outside of Illinois and outside of our region that might have known about some of these cases,” Vartanian said. “So it was the right thing to be able to get that information out there to be able to get answers for the victims and families.”

Schepers was enjoying a night of celebratory drinks with coworkers at P.M. Bentley’s in Carpentersville, Illinois – located 45 miles outside Chicago. Schepers was the last of the group to leave the bar at approximately 1 a.m. on April 16, 1983, and neither she nor her 1980 Toyota Celica were ever seen again, according to the Elgin Police Department.

BODY OF MISSING WASHINGTON STATE GRANDMOTHER FOUND BURIED UNDER SHED PARTIALLY ENCASED IN CONCRETE

Even though the community had countless theories of what may have happened to Schepers, including the possibility something happened to her on the way home or when she arrived at her destination, the case ran cold.

Schepers’ disappearance remained an open investigation for 41 years, and was briefly revisited by the Illinois State Police in the late 1980s and again by investigators in 2010.

In 2008 [and] 2009, we did a bunch of billboards for that case and tried to generate media interest,” Houghton told Fox News Digital. “A lot of DNA was put into the national databases that were kind of new on the scene at that time, so that was the new technology then.”

FOX HOLLOW SERIAL KILLER’S SECRET TAPES COULD REVEAL MURDER HORRORS IF EVER FOUND: DOCUMENTARY

Despite the multiple attempts to solve what happened to Schepers, detectives were unable to follow any major leads, until the department launched “Somebody Knows Something.”

When we started to look at the Karen Schepers case, we realized that we could put everything out there because we had no idea what happened to her,” Vartanian said. “Whether it was an accident or if it was something intentional, and then anything in between. There was so much time that had gone by,we knew that there was a lot of content that could be there.”

With permission from her family, Houghton and Vartanian began digging for new information regarding Schepers, using a mix of old-fashioned police work while leaning on updated technology.

MISSING WISCONSIN TEEN FOUND MORE THAN TWO MONTHS AFTER DISAPPEARANCE

This was very much an old-fashioned ‘talk to people, get in a car, go knock on doors, go drive around’ type of investigation,” Houghton said. “Investigations for any of our cases are still like that, but this was much more like that in the fact that we had to go look and see what roads existed in 1983? What bodies of water existed in 1983? Because it’s very different now than it was then.”

The pair hit the pavement, talking to locals in the area who knew Schepers to paint a picture of her final moments on the morning she went missing. Houghton and Vartanian worked to determine what route Schepers took home, along with researching the weather conditions and other details that may have contributed to her disappearance.

As the detectives were pouring over print media, they discovered the nearby Fox River was flooded at the time of Schepers’ disappearance – a key break in the case that prompted them to call in expert divers to search the body of water.

LUXURY FLORIDA MALL’S STRING OF MURDERS AND KIDNAPPING HAVE ONE THING IN COMMON: RETIRED FBI AGENT

“Interestingly enough, we would get a lot of tips from people that were saying, ‘There’s no way she’s in the river’,” Houghton said. “‘It’s too shallow, I fish there, I boat there.’ However, there are different parts where the river might be two feet deep or one foot deep, and there are other spots where it’s [up to] 15 feet deep, so it really depended on where you were looking.”

On March 24, 2025, the Elgin Police Department called in Chaos Divers, a non-profit team of independent divers specializing in underwater recovery, to search the river.

In a dramatic end to a four-decades-long mystery, Schepers and her vehicle were found.

”As we each heard the news that her car was found, time stopped while we drew an audible gasp,” Schepers’ family said in a statement.  “When it started back up again, our lives took a new path that finally included the answer to ‘Where is Karen?’ This question has been haunting all who knew Karen for many years.”

‘DATING GAME’ SERIAL KILLER’S RISE TO FAME WAS KEY TO HIS DOWNFALL, ARRESTING OFFICER REVEALS FOR FIRST TIME

PHOTOS: Schepers’ 90-year-old mother is reunited with items recovered from her vehicle

The divers were able to recover Schepers’ vehicle while keeping the structure intact, allowing investigators to use dental records to identify her skeletal remains.

With this case, it was a bit of a unicorn in the fact that we had no idea what happened to her,” Houghton said. “Don’t be afraid to fail, don’t be afraid of looking foolish. Because at the end of the day, the goal is to find this person and we did that in this case. If we do this five more times and this is the only time it works out, so be it. But if you do this five or 10 times, and you find one case or solve one case, it’s totally worth doing that for that family.”

Houghton and Vartanian are already planning on the next case to revive in the second season of their podcast, telling Fox News Digital it will likely be a homicide investigation.

Houghton and Vartanian were able to provide her 90-year-old mother with two items recovered from her vehicle – her sapphire birthstone ring and class of 1977 high school graduation tassel – providing a sense of closure for Schepers’ loved ones as the mystery surrounding her disappearance finally comes to a close.

“We hope for continued success on each and every cold case,” Schepers’ family said. “Miracles do happen.”
