Lifelong Democrat switches to Trump after seeing ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ tax benefits

President Donald Trump recognized a third-generation autoworker from Michigan Thursday while speaking at the “big, beautiful event,” noting he was a lifelong Democrat who now supports the president because of vehicle loan interest tax benefits.

The president spoke about the “big, beautiful bill” from the East Room of the White House with a group of people standing behind him who represented various trades, including food delivery, farmers and automotive workers.

One of the workers standing behind Trump was James Benson, a third-generation autoworker from Belleville, Michigan, who has been with Ford Motor Company for 26 years.

Trump introduced Benson, noting that Ford has “a lot of plants” in the U.S.

“If you have plants in this country, you’re going to make a lot of money,” the president said, adding that he loves autoworkers.

Trump also said Benson was a lifelong Democrat until 2017, when he saw the benefits of the tax laws.

Trump then spoke about his latest plan to benefit car owners by making interest on car payments fully tax-deductible.

But the deduction would only be for cars made in the U.S., Trump said, adding if it was made someplace else, “we don’t care.”

Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” would create a new deduction of up to $10,000 for qualified passenger vehicle loan interest in a given taxable year. The deduction would phase out when a taxpayer’s modified adjusted gross income exceeds $100,000.

Applicable passenger vehicles include cars, trucks, vans, SUVs and motorcycles that have been manufactured for use on public streets, roads and freeways and for which the final assembly occurs in the U.S.

The bill defines the final assembly as the process by which the manufacturer produces a vehicle and delivers it to a dealer with all the parts necessary for operation.

As is the case with the overtime and tips deductions, the auto loan provision would be in effect for tax years 2025 through 2028.

Trump reiterated to those in attendance that the tax benefit is only for vehicles made in the U.S.

Former NY governor refuses to bow out after shocking defeat to socialist candidate

Andrew Cuomo is not dropping out of the race for New York City mayor.

Cuomo, the former three-term New York State governor who resigned from office in 2021 amid multiple scandals, has decided, for now, to move ahead and run in the general election as an independent candidate, two sources confirmed to Fox News on Thursday night.

The announcement by Cuomo came two days after progressive upstart Zohran Mamdani shocked the political world, as he topped Cuomo and the rest of the 11-candidate field in heavily blue New York City’s Democratic Party mayoral primary and took a big step toward becoming the first Muslim mayor of the nation’s most populous city.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist state assemblyman from Queens who originally hailed from Uganda, captured 43.5% of the first round unofficial primary results, with Cuomo at 36.4%.

While he acknowledged Mamdani’s victory in the primary, Cuomo left the door open to a November run as an independent candidate, which election rules in New York State permit.

“I want to look at all the numbers as they come in and analyze the rank choice voting. I will then consult with my colleagues on what is the best path for me to help the City of New York, as I have already qualified to run for mayor on an independent line in November,” Cuomo said in a statement earlier this week.

Cuomo was facing an end-of-the-day Friday deadline for candidates who had already qualified to run as independents to decline that independent ballot line.

The former governor will keep his place that he already secured earlier this year on the “Fight & Deliver” ballot line. But the sources said that Cuomo had not committed yet to running an active general election campaign through the summer and into the autumn. 

If Cuomo drops out of the race at a later date, his name will stay on the general election ballot.

Once a longshot in the race, Mamdani closed the gap with Cuomo during the final stretch of the primary race thanks to an energetic campaign that focused in part on New York City’s high cost of living.

Bernie Sanders of Vermont, the progressive champion and two-time Democratic presidential nominee runner-up, helped Mamdani consolidate much of New York City’s Democratic Party base

And Mamdani rode a wave of support from younger and first-time voters to catapult himself into first place.

“I will be the mayor for every New Yorker,” Mamdani said in his victory speech. “Whether you voted for me, or for Governor Cuomo, or felt too disillusioned by a long broken political system to vote at all, I will fight for a city that works for you, that is affordable for you, that is safe for you.”

Since none of the candidates topped 50%, counting technically now heads into rounds of ranked-choice elimination. But the combined totals of votes Mamdani and other aligned progressive candidates won are likely to be more than enough to topple Cuomo as the ranked-choice tabulations begin on July 1.

Cuomo, seeing the writing on the wall, admitted defeat and complimented Mamdani as the initial primary results poured in on Tuesday, telling supporters that “tonight is his night. He deserved it. He won.”

But Cuomo, in an interview on Wednesday with CBS New York, noted that “in the general election, more people come out to vote. It’s a broader pool, if you will, of New Yorkers, more representative pool of New Yorkers.”

“There are about 5 million voters in New York City, there are about 8 million people in New York City, and about 1 million people vote in the Democratic primary. So it’s not, necessarily, representative of the city at large,” the former governor said.

And a poll from a consulting and lobbying group that was aligned with an outside group supporting Cuomo released a poll on Thursday that suggested Mamdani and Cuomo tied in a possible general election matchup, with incumbent Mayor Eric Adams – a Democrat who’s running for re-election as an independent – and Republican mayoral nominee Curtis Sliwa far behind.

Sliwa, the founder of the volunteer crime-fighting patrols known as the Guardian Angels, is the GOP nominee for a second straight election cycle. Also running this November as an independent is former federal prosecutor Jim Walden.

Asked if Cuomo should drop out of the race, Mamdani said Thursday in an interview with Fox News affiliate WNYW in New York that “I think there’s room for everyone because, ultimately, we’re going to win it.”

The 67-year-old Cuomo has spent the past four years fighting to clear his name after 11 sexual harassment accusations, which he has repeatedly denied, forced his resignation. He was also under investigation at the time for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic amid allegations his administration vastly understated COVID-related deaths at state nursing homes. 

Last month, the Justice Department opened a criminal investigation into Cuomo after Republicans accused him of lying to Congress about the decisions he made as governor during the coronavirus pandemic.

Cuomo, thanks to his name recognition, was the front-runner in the polls even before he announced his candidacy earlier this year. But he ran a safe campaign that relied on union support, and he shied away from often engaging with local or national media.

Mamdani, meanwhile, made smart use of social media platforms, including TikTok, as he engaged the primary electorate. He proposed eliminating fares to ride New York City’s vast bus system, making CUNY (City University of New York) “tuition-free,” freezing rents on municipal housing, offering “free childcare” for children up to age five, and setting up government-run grocery stores.

Adams, in formally launching his campaign on Thursday on the steps of City Hall, said “this is a city not of socialism,” in an obvious jab at Mamdani’s proposals.

“There’s no dignity in someone giving you everything for free. There’s dignity in giving you a job, so you can provide for your family and the opportunities that you deserve. This is not a city of handouts. This is a city of hands up.”

Adams’ poll numbers were sinking even before he was indicted last year on five counts, which accused the mayor of bribery and fraud as part of an alleged “long-running” scheme to personally profit from contacts with foreign officials.

The mayor made repeated overtures to President Donald Trump, and the Justice Department earlier this year dismissed the corruption charges, so Adams could potentially work with the Trump administration on its illegal immigration crackdown.

He announced in early April that he would run for re-election as an independent and forgo the Democratic primary.

Condoleezza Rice reveals thoughts on Trump’s strikes on Iran and their impact

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the United States and Israel’s strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities are a significant moment for the Middle East and a sign of bolstered American credibility on the global stage.

Rice joined “Special Report” on Thursday after the United States struck three Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend, praising the American military and Israeli forces for their accomplishments.

“We will eventually know precisely how much the Iranian program was damaged, but I think all of the evidence is that it was substantially, significantly damaged to the place that, for a while at least, it will be hard to build a nuclear weapon,” she said.

Iran’s Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites were hit early Sunday morning by U.S. B-2 bombers and Tomahawk missiles as part of Operation Midnight Hammer.

The B-2 bombers flew for 37 hours non-stop from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri to drop 12 GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators on Fordow and two on Natanz. 

More than two dozen cruise missiles were also launched at Isfahan from a U.S. submarine.

Top Trump administration officials have maintained the “obliteration” of Iran’s nuclear program in the days following the strikes despite questions regarding the whereabouts of the Islamic Republic’s highly enriched uranium.

“President Trump directed the most complex and secretive military operation in history. And it was a resounding success, resulting in a ceasefire agreement and the end of the 12 Day War,” said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during a Thursday press briefing at the Pentagon. 

“There’s been a lot of discussion about what happened and what didn’t happen. Step back for a second. Because of decisive military action, President Trump created the conditions to end the war, decimating, choose your word, obliterating, destroying Iran’s nuclear capabilities.”

Rice told Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier that she believes the U.S. strikes set Iran’s nuclear program back significantly.

She criticized a leaked, “low-confidence” preliminary intelligence assessment from the Defense Intelligence Agency — which claimed President Donald Trump’s strikes did not destroy key components of Iran’s nuclear facilities — as “irresponsible.”

“When you look at what the Israelis were able to do to Hezbollah, what they were able to do to Hamas — the significant efforts against the Iranian military establishment, against scientists. This really is a now-crippled Iran, and a crippled Iran is good for the region,” the Stanford professor explained.

The Trump administration is pushing for diplomatic talks with the Iranians following Operation Midnight Hammer, but Rice argued she has no doubts that the Iranian regime isn’t interested in peace, given its “legitimacy” is based on destroying Israel.

“We’ve had 46 years of the Iranians destabilizing the region, killing Americans. We’ve had 46 years of their proxies holding terror against Israel, against Iraq, against the people of the Middle East. So, no, they don’t want peace,” she said.

The former Bush official added that the U.S. strikes were a “shot in the arm for American credibility” on the global stage following former President Joe Biden’s “disastrous” withdrawal from Afghanistan. 

“Credibility is not something that you establish one day and then you sort of dial it in and say it’s done. We have to keep establishing that the United States is going to try and shape the international system, not just be a victim of it,” Rice said. “But what’s happened in the last couple of days is very, very good for American credibility.” 

Elite university faces crisis after White House slashes billions over campus protests

The Harvard Kennedy School of Government will lay off staff after federal funding cuts and endowment tax threats on Wednesday, according to an email from the dean of the school that was obtained by Fox News Digital.

Without mentioning the Trump administration directly, Harvard Kennedy School Dean Jeremy M. Weinstein announced in an email to faculty and staff that the cuts were in response to “unprecedented new headwinds” creating “significant financial challenges.” These included a “substantial proposed increase in the endowment tax” and “massive cuts to federal funding of research.”

He also cited the impact on international student enrollment after the administration eliminated the student visa program due to “pro-terrorist conduct” at Harvard’s campus protests. According to the Kennedy School, international students made up 59 percent of the school’s student body last year, and 52 percent on average in the past five years.

HARVARD UPDATES LAWSUIT AFTER TRUMP CANCELS ADDITIONAL $450M IN FUNDING

The Kennedy School has been planning for budget cuts since February, but the White House’s recent actions appear to have exacerbated the circumstances.

The Trump administration froze $2.2 billion in funding to the university and threatened to revoke its tax-exempt status due to its handling of antisemitism on campus in the wake of the October 7 terror attacks on Israel by Hamas. 

The Department of Education’s Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism released a statement on May 13, citing recent reporting that “has exposed the Harvard Law Review’s (HLR) pattern of endemic race discrimination when evaluating articles for inclusion in its journal.” 

The findings resulted in the Trump administration cutting an additional $450 million in grants from the university.

In addition to layoffs, Harvard has implemented “important steps” to reduce costs across the Kennedy School, Weinstein said, such as pauses in hiring and merit-based pay, ending a lease on the first floor of an office building, halting “non-urgent” construction and renovation projects, and “reducing spending” across each core department.

“Unfortunately, those efforts alone will not be enough to address our current financial challenges,” the dean wrote. “As a result, we need to lay off some members of our team and restructure other positions to ensure the long-term financial future of the Kennedy School.”

Weinstein stated that managers would inform staff affected by the layoffs on Wednesday afternoon.

“I am truly sorry that we need to take this step as we navigate unprecedented challenges as a School and University,” Weinstein wrote, while also noting that the administration’s actions caused “even greater financial uncertainty.”

The Harvard Kennedy School declined to disclose to Fox News Digital how many staff members were laid off. 

The Harvard School of Public Health implemented layoffs in April and other schools are considering cutting staff as well, the Harvard Crimson reported Thursday.

The Trump administration did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Multiple people have been arrested following a violent riot outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Portland, Oregon, that involved knife-throwing and explosives.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told Fox News Digital that one of the rioters had tried to fire a ‘Roman Candle’ firework at law enforcement.

The same person allegedly threatened officers with a large knife by swinging it and then throwing it at them, the spokesperson said.

No law enforcement officers were seriously injured during the attack, according to officials.

While the suspects’ identities have not yet been released, DHS confirmed there have been three arrests.

Idaho judge rules on Bryan Kohberger defense alternate suspect theory

The trial of Bryan Kohberger, the man accused of killing four University of Idaho students in a brutal stabbing attack, has been pushed back by one week, according to an amended scheduling order filed in Idaho’s Fourth Judicial District Court.

The new order Thursday says that public jury selection will begin on August 4, but opening statements are now expected on August 18, one week later than the previously anticipated start date on August 11.

It replaces the previously anticipated August 4 date for the start of jury selection, instead setting aside July 28 through August 1 for sealed proceedings involving the court and attorneys.

“An amended scheduling order filed today in State v. Kohberger sets new expected dates for public jury selection and for the start of the trial,” Nate Poppino, a spokesperson for the Idaho court, shared Thursday.

A woman visiting a local beach was walking along the tide admiring shells when she picked up one that could have had deadly repercussions. 

Sharing her story on TikTok, the woman shows herself finding a spotted, cone-shaped shell and picking it up. She was in Okinawa, Japan, when this happened. 

“She doesn’t know it yet, but she’s about to pick up the world’s deadliest shell that leads to full paralysis in minutes,” the text on the video says.

Cone snails are one of the most venomous animals on Earth, with approximately 600-700 species of slugs in existence, according to the Ocean Conservancy (OC).

Cone snails are marine predators. They use venom to immobilize their prey by using their “harpoon-like teeth” to inject victims, according to the National Library of Medicine (NLM).

Super Bowl halftime show protester identified as Antonio Brown’s alleged victim

The person who waved a Palestinian flag during Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show performance at the Super Bowl has been identified as the man Antonio Brown allegedly shot last month.

Brown reportedly has a warrant out for his arrest for attempted murder, and Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu told investigators a bullet grazed his neck, according to The Associated Press.

The AP mentioned that Nantambu was the person selected to be a backup dancer for Lamar during the rapper’s performance but instead took the opportunity to show his support for Sudan and Palestine. 

Nantambu was arrested Thursday on charges of resisting an officer and disturbing the peace by interruption of a lawful assembly, revealing a link between the incidents.

“In coordination with the National Football League, troopers learned that Nantambu had permission to be on the field during the performance but did not have permission to demonstrate as he did,” Louisiana State Police said.

The alleged incident between Brown and Nantambu happened outside a boxing event in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood. The warrant reportedly listed the incident as occurring May 16. 

Fox News Digital previously reported that Brown appeared to be involved in several videos on social media in an incident at a Miami boxing event that night. 

One video showed Brown appearing to fight in a parking lot as a crowd moved toward an alley. Then, a gunshot appeared to ring out, sending spectators running in the opposite direction. 

Brown was spotted in handcuffs being led to the back of a police cruiser.

When Nantambu’s link to the incidents surfaced online, Brown responded.

“That guy is a fraud, liar, stalker & criminal. He was arrested in 2022 for stealing 6 figures of jewelry from me. He then showed up at my show at rolling loud in 2023 trying to assault me,” Brown wrote on X. 

“Then in May he snuck into a gate at the event and came right up to me trying to steal from me and threaten my life, Media hasn’t told this story yet… instead painting a false picture of me. That night I was fighting for my life with his intentions.”

A Miami Police Department spokesman previously told Fox News Digital the department received an alert of shots fired at around 3 a.m. May 17. Police initiated an investigation, no arrests were made and no one was injured, the spokesman said at the time.

The protest took place with President Donald Trump in attendance at the game, marking the first time a sitting president has attended a Super Bowl. Trump previously floated the idea of the U.S. “taking over” the Gaza Strip.

“I do see a long-term ownership position, and I see it bringing great stability to that part of the Middle East and maybe the entire Middle East,” Trump said, adding it’s a decision he didn’t make lightly.

During Lamar’s performance of his new hit “tv off,” Nantambu held the flag on top of a prop car and then ran onto the field with the flag.

Nantambu wandered back and forth on the field before security guards arrived and dragged him off of the field.
