Supreme Court justice accuses Jackson of embracing ‘imperial judiciary’

Justice Amy Coney Barrett had pointed words on Friday for her colleague Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, accusing Jackson of taking an “extreme” position on the role of the judiciary branch.

Writing in her Supreme Court opinion on nationwide injunctions, Barrett said Jackson’s dissent contained “rhetoric,” and she signaled that the liberal justice’s arguments were not worth much attention.

“We will not dwell on Justice Jackson’s argument, which is at odds with more than two centuries’ worth of precedent, not to mention the Constitution itself,” Barrett wrote. “We observe only this: Justice Jackson decries an imperial Executive while embracing an imperial Judiciary.”

The Supreme Court’s decision came as part of an emergency request from the Trump administration asking the high court to put an end to judges issuing universal injunctions, including those that judges have placed on President Donald Trump’s birthright citizenship order.

Barrett, who was appointed by Trump, wrote that when judges issue injunctions to block policies, like those the Trump administration is trying to implement, they cannot apply the injunction to more than the parties involved in the case. Barrett said that type of order, often called a “nationwide injunction,” is judicial overreach.

But Barrett’s opinion left open numerous other ways that plaintiffs can seek broad forms of relief from the courts, including by bringing class action lawsuits or statewide lawsuits.

Jackson wrote that nationwide injunctions should be permissible because the courts should not allow the president to “violate the Constitution.” Barrett said that was not based on any existing legal doctrine.

“She offers a vision of the judicial role that would make even the most ardent defender of judicial supremacy blush,” Barrett wrote.

Sotomayor, meanwhile, wrote in her own dissenting opinion that the Supreme Court was being “complicit” by allowing the Trump administration to extract a perceived win out of the high court over birthright citizenship.

Sotomayor said that every court that has reviewed Trump’s birthright citizenship plan thus far has blocked Trump from carrying it out. Trump played a “different game,” Sotomayor said, by bringing the case before the Supreme Court without actually asking the justices to analyze the merits of his plan. Trump instead asked the justices to weigh in on the legality of nationwide injunctions in general.

Trump’s birthright citizenship order would eliminate the 150-year-old right under the 14th Amendment that allows babies born in the United States to receive automatic citizenship regardless of their parents’ citizenship status.

The Supreme Court’s decision still allows for the high possibility that judges will continue to widely block Trump’s birthright citizenship order, but with different legal maneuvering on the part of the plaintiffs and the courts.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a Navy oil tanker named after gay rights leader Harvey Milk will be renamed after Medal of Honor recipient Oscar V. Peterson. 

“We are taking the politics out of ship naming,” he wrote on X along with a video announcing the move. 

Milk was California’s first openly gay politician, who was shot and killed inside San Francisco city hall by former San Francisco supervisor Dan White. The ship, a fleet replenishment oiler, was originally named after him in 2016 under President Barack Obama.

He served four years in the Navy in the Korean War but left due to his sexuality. 

Peterson was awarded the Medal of Honor after his death, having died of his wounds during battle in World War II in an act of self-sacrifice that saved lives. 

“People want to be proud of the ship they’re sailing in,” Hegseth said of the change. “We’re not renaming the ship to anything political. This is not about political activists, unlike the previous administration.”

Peterson, who spent 20 years in the Navy, was in charge of running the steam engine in the U.S.S. Neosho when it came under Japanese fire in the Philippines in 1942. 

On May 7, 1942, the Neosho was severely damaged during the Battle of the Coral Sea. Peterson and other members of his repair party were badly injured, but Peterson managed to close four bulkhead steam valves. He sustained third-degree burns in the process, but the move kept the ship afloat. On May 11, the U.S.S. Henley rescued 123 survivors from the Neosho, and Peterson died two days later from his wounds. 

The renaming comes amid a push from Hegseth to remove DEI and “woke” policies from the Department of Defense.

When the move was first reported earlier this month, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., called the move ​​a “shameful, vindictive erasure of those who fought to break down barriers for all to chase the American Dream.”

“As the rest of us are celebrating the joy of Pride Month, it is my hope that the Navy will reconsider this egregious decision,” Pelosi said in a statement.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez are officially married, Fox News Digital can confirm. 

On Friday, Sánchez updated her Instagram account to say “Lauren Sánchez Bezos,” after saying “I do” to the Amazon founder. She also shared the first look at her wedding gown on Instagram.

“06/27/2025,” she captioned her post, adding a red heart. Sánchez also debuted her wedding gown on the cover of Vogue.

Her Dolce & Gabbana wedding dress was a mermaid-style lace gown with sheer long sleeves and a high neckline. She told Vogue in her cover story she felt “like a princess.”

Sánchez revealed that her two sons, Nikko and Evan, walked her down the aisle. Her daughter, Ella, was her maid of honor and delivered a reading during the wedding ceremony. All three of her kids, who she shares with ex-husband Patrick Whitesell, were wearing Dolce & Gabbana for her wedding.

On Friday, the Amazon founder was all smiles as he waved to onlookers while looking sharp in a classic black tuxedo as he headed to San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, where the wedding was held.

Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., a key Trump ally who is rumored to be planning a gubernatorial run in 2026, hit back hard against New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, calling her the “worst governor in America” after the Democrat dinged her over Medicaid cuts.

In a Friday post on social media, Hochul accused Stefanik of voting “to put five hospitals in her district on the chopping block, endangering her own constituents’ lives, health, and jobs—all to serve Donald Trump.”

“I won’t stand for it. I’m fighting like hell to save New Yorkers’ health care,” said Hochul.

In response, Stefanik posted on X, “Hi @KathyHochul! Welcome to the fight.”

The New York congresswoman then added, “Oh and Kathy, your numbers in rural NY are plummeting” and “I have been nationally recognized as the TOP advocate to deliver results for rural hospitals due to my work for hospitals in my district.”

This comes after Stefanik pressured Hochul to say whether she supported the new Democratic nominee for New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has made controversial statements criticizing Israel and promoting Palestine and who identifies as a Democratic Socialist.

Hochul has since said she plans to meet with Mamdani to discuss his ideas for the city but has not yet issued a full endorsement.

Stefanik has said that as the leader of the New York Democratic Party, Hochul “fully embraced the antisemitic, Communist nominee,” adding, “she owns this catastrophe.”

An Illinois man died after falling while hiking at a state park in New York.

The 70-year-old tourist, Jack Wersching, was hiking in the Kaaterskill Wild Forest in the Catskills on the evening of Friday, June 20, when he fell from a rock ledge onto stone steps below, according to a statement from New York State Police.

Wersching, of Park Ridge, Illinois, was walking along a path near a waterfall when the incident occurred. 

Park rangers responded quickly to the scene and attempted to stabilize him for an airlift to a hospital, but he died at the scene.

A provision inside President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” that would have lessened regulations on certain firearms was one of many stripped policies that did not pass muster with Senate rules.

The Senate parliamentarian ruled late Thursday night that policy changes that would delist short-barrel rifles, shotguns and suppressors from the National Firearms Act (NFA) would have to be scrubbed from the Senate Finance Committee’s portion of the mammoth bill.

The provision would have allowed for those particular guns and accessories to no longer be subject to a $200 federal tax. They would also no longer have needed to be registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Changes to the NFA were part of the Stop Harassing Owners of Rifles Today (SHORT) Act, a bill pushed by Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., in the upper chamber, and Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., in the House.

“This is a setback, but we are committed to working with the parliamentarian to protect the Second Amendment in any way we can through reconciliation,” Marshall told Fox News Digital in a statement. “‘Shall not be infringed’ is crystal clear and the rights of gun owners must be respected.”

Indeed, lawmakers do have the opportunity to rewrite the provision to comport with the Byrd Rule, which governs the budget reconciliation process and allows either party in power to skirt the 60-vote filibuster threshold in the Senate.

“I’m working with my Senate Republican colleagues to rewrite the language so we can retain our 2A wins and deliver the best possible outcome for the American people,” he said. “We must seize this rare opportunity to restore our Second Amendment rights.”

Arguments before the parliamentarian, who many Republicans lashed out at on Thursday following rulings that stripped key, yet divisive, Medicaid tweaks from the “big, beautiful bill,” are expected to continue throughout Friday and likely until the last few minutes before the final bill is revealed.

The gun provision was one of many tax-related items stripped from the package. Others included subsidies for private schools and carve-outs for religious colleges from the endowments tax, among others.

There are other provisions still under consideration, including “Trump Accounts,” which would have set aside $1,000 in taxpayer money for newborns, requiring Social Securities numbers for a slew of tax credits, and making tax benefits for those who invest in opportunity zones permanent.

Arizona Diamondbacks star second baseman Ketel Marte was in tears during a pitching change in the seventh inning of the team’s 4-1 win over the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field on Tuesday after an opposing fan made a comment about his late mother. 

Marte’s mother, Elpidia Valdez, died in a car crash in the Dominican Republic in 2017.

The incident resulted in the fan who made the comment being indefinitely banned from MLB ballparks, and an outpouring of support for Marte.

The 31-year-old All star revealed what the fan said about his mother during an interview on “Danny Beisbol” Thursday. 

Marte claimed the fan yelled, “I sent your mom a text last night.” Marte made the claims in Spanish, but it was translated through subtitles on the podcast. 

“What happened was in the seventh inning, I came to bat. I’m ready at the plate and I hear this fan shouting. He was on top of the dugout,” Marte said. “He yelled at me, saying stuff about my mom. He was like, ‘I sent your mom a text last night.’ When everything happened with my mom, I was here in Chicago. I was in this city.”

He added fan behavior is “getting out of hand.”

MLB provided a statement addressing the incident.

“We commend the White Sox for taking immediate action in removing the fan,” MLB said in a statement to Fox News Digital. 

The Diamondbacks played the White Sox again Wednesday, and the White Sox displayed a message on their scoreboard in support of Marte in the first inning.

“Baseball is Family: The White Sox community supports Ketel Marte,” the message said.

Diamondbacks’ manager Torey Lovullo consoled the tearful Marte on the mound and put his arm around him during a pitching change in the seventh inning. 

“It was a terrible moment. Fans are nasty. Fans go too far,” an emotional Lovullo told reporters after the game. 

Lovullo added that he told Marte he was not alone, and that the heckler was “an idiot.”

Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo called for the fan to banned after the game ended Tuesday. 

“That can’t happen,” Perdomo said. “We can’t continue to do that … here in MLB.”

Man confronts woman with dog in ‘no pets’ coffee shop, gets unexpected response

A coffee-shop patron who confronted another customer about having a dog inside the store said he was accused of acting improperly for questioning the woman about it.

A Reddit user wrote about his recent coffee-shop experience in Manhattan Beach, California, on a popular subreddit page.

“As soon as I open the door I’m hit with a dog looking at me at hip level sitting on a chair in this small shop,” wrote the man, who said he was 33 years old. “The dog is indoors and the door had a clear ‘no pets’ sign. I watched for a second. This clearly wasn’t a service animal, as she was letting it interact with several other guests.”

That’s when the man said he decided to approach the woman about it.

“I asked her, ‘Did you miss the no pets sign?’ She immediately says, ‘I think you should stop harassing me’ … This lady played the victim and called me an a–hole.”

The man said that another customer “stepped up for her” and then confronted him — asking him why it’s an issue and telling him, “Don’t be an a–hole and drop it.”

“I wave the guy off, tell him I care, and I don’t like dogs,” he said. “I say, ‘It’s not hard to not bring your dog to a coffee shop that doesn’t allow dogs.'”

The man writing on Reddit said he then complained to an employee at the stop, “who didn’t seem interested in enforcing anything.”

“I love dogs. I love cafés. I hate people who bring their dogs to cafés.”

“The way you asked her why repeatedly was weird – she’s not going to have an answer or respond well to that – but you weren’t wrong for calling her out for having a dog in a restaurant that clearly doesn’t allow them,” one person wrote.

Another person commented, “Annoying that the business would have ‘no pets’ policies posted and not enforce them, though.”

Someone else wrote, “I love dogs. I love cafés. I hate people who bring their dogs to cafés.”

Etiquette expert Diane Gottsman, founder and owner of the Protocol School of Texas in San Antonio, suggested that this sort of issue is best left for management to handle.

“Unless the dog is vicious and you have to immediately move a child or yourself out of the way, remarking that you are in potential danger, allow the owner or manager of the establishment to handle the situation,” Gottsman told Fox News Digital. 

Other Redditors agreed that it wasn’t necessary for the man to get involved.

“See, it’s not your ‘civil duty’ to protect a company or spout the rules,” one commenter wrote. “You could have quietly brought it up to someone at the register or find the manager.”

“What possible positive outcome could transpire by confronting the person?”

The commenter also said, “The lady also sucks because clearly she thinks the rules aren’t meant for her.”

Another commenter felt the man was instigating things. “Go complain to an employee or manager. What possible positive outcome could transpire by confronting the person?” the individual wrote.

“Confronting the other patron directly only serves to fulfill some desire for engaging in conflict where you’re ‘justified,’” the person added. “Not your job.”

Gottsman added, “If the dog is sitting under the table, causing no harm, and you are just irritated because the [animal’s owner] is breaking the rule, consider your motive. How important is it to you and how is the dog impacting you personally or other patrons?”

She said it’s important to consider that the woman might not have seen the “no pets” sign.

“It’s not necessary for a guest to be the pet enforcer but to politely point out the issue to the manager and allow them to make the final call,” Gottsman noted.

If the woman was “blatantly disrespecting a rule, it comes across as arrogant because everyone will feel like they can break the rule and all of a sudden there are no boundaries,” Gottsman told Fox News Digital.

However, she said, “perhaps she may not have known there was a pet policy, or there may be a reason she brought her pet in with her … It’s never a good idea for a fellow guest to be on pet patrol for no good reason except to call someone else out. Let the manager handle the situation.”

Brooks Koepka withdraws after club-smashing outburst during LIV Dallas

LIV Golf star Brooks Koepka plays for Smash GC, and on Friday during the first round of LIV Dallas, Koepka took his team’s name to heart. 

Koepka, 35, hit a wayward drive on the ninth hole. Immediately after he saw the flight of the ball, the five-time major winner smashed his club. 

After slamming his club, he took a swing at the tee marker and destroyed it.

The five-time major champion struggled during the first round and was six over par after eight holes before he withdrew with an illness, according to LIV Golf communications. He was replaced by a reserve player, Luis Carrera.

Koepka would be allowed to return this weekend, but his contributions would count strictly for this team’s score. 

Koepka played better at the U.S. Open earlier this month than he did at LIV Dallas Friday. He tied for 12th at the U.S. Open as he finished six-over par for the tournament. Koepka won the U.S. Open in 2017 and 2018.

The LIV Golf star has had success in the major championships, winning the PGA Championship in 2018, 2019 and 2023, in addition to his U.S. Open victories. Koepka had nine career wins on the PGA Tour before he defected to LIV in June 2022. 

According to the PGA Tour website, Koepka made nearly $44 million from the 186 events he participated in on the tour.

Last season, Koepka won twice and became the first LIV golfer to win five times since the inception of the upstart golf league. 

Harold Varner III of the 4Aces GC was in the lead after the first round at LIV Dallas.
