Democratic socialist poised to make history lands powerful ally in NYC mayor battle

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, the frontrunner in the race for mayor of America’s most populous city, on Thursday landed the endorsement of one of New York City’s most influential politicians.

Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat, arguably the city’s most powerful Latino leader, is backing Mamdani, who, if elected in November, would become New York City’s first Muslim mayor.

“Thank you @EspaillatNY for joining this campaign for an affordable NYC and for fighting Trump’s authoritarianism in DC,” Mamdani wrote in a social media post. “Adriano and I know that the only way we can protect this city is by standing firm in our values and standing up for working class and immigrant New Yorkers.”

MAMDANI’S FAR-LEFT ALLIES MULL PRIMARY CHALLENGES AGAINST TOP NYC HOUSE DEMOCRATS

Mamdani and Espaillat are scheduled to team up at a campaign event on Thursday afternoon to formally announce the five-term congressman’s endorsement of the 33-year-old Ugandan-born state assemblyman from Queens.

MAMDANI POLITICAL TSUNAMI SWAMPS DEMOCRATS AS PARTY SEARCHES FOR PATH FORWARD

Espaillat’s endorsement of Mamdani, who two weeks ago convincingly defeated former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and nine other candidates to win the Democratic Party mayoral nomination, is seen as a setback for Cuomo.

Cuomo, who resigned from office in 2021 during his third term as governor amid multiple scandals and who was aiming for a political comeback, was endorsed in the Democratic primary by Espaillat. And the two politicians teamed up at a rally on the eve of the kickoff of early voting in the primary election.

While Cuomo lost the Democratic mayoral nomination to Mamdani, he’s running, as of now, on the November ballot as an independent, which state rules allow.

Democratic Mayor Eric Adams, who dropped his primary bid earlier this year amid sinking poll numbers in the wake of numerous controversies, is seeking re-election as an independent.

THE PLOT TO STOP MAMDANI: DEMOCRATS SCRAMBLE TO PREVENT FAR-LEFT TAKEOVER IN NYC

Also on the ballot in the general election are Jim Walden, a former federal prosecutor running as an independent, and Guardian Angels co-founder Curtis Sliwa, who, for a second straight election, is the Republican mayoral nominee.

Espaillat, the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump’s sweeping and controversial second-term immigration crackdown.

And Espaillat, who backed Adams in the mayor’s 2021 election, was thought to have grown frustrated with the mayor’s working relationship with Trump on immigration enforcement.

Adams’ poll numbers were sinking even before he was indicted last year on five counts, which accused the mayor of bribery and fraud as part of an alleged “long-running” scheme to personally profit from contacts with foreign officials.

The mayor made repeated overtures to Trump and the Justice Department earlier this year dismissed the corruption charges, so Adams could potentially work with the Trump administration on its illegal immigration crackdown.

RESURFACED MAMDANI PHOTO SPARKS SOCIAL MEDIA FIRESTORM

News of Espaillat’s endorsement of Mamdani was first reported by The New York Times.

Mamdani surged to a primary victory thanks to an energetic campaign that put a major focus on affordability and New York City’s high cost of living.

Mamdani made smart use of social media platforms, including TikTok, as he engaged low-propensity voters. He proposed eliminating fares to ride New York City’s vast bus system, making CUNY (City University of New York) “tuition-free,” freezing rents on municipal housing, offering “free childcare” for children up to age 5, and setting up government-run grocery stores.

And thanks in part to the efforts of a massive grassroots army of volunteers, he rode a wave of support from younger and progressive voters to catapult into first place.

Since his primary victory, Republicans have relentlessly painted Mamdani as an extremist and anchored him to Democrats across the country ahead of next year’s midterm elections.

The attacks stretched from down ballot on the campaign trail all the way up to the White House, with Trump claiming that Mamdani was “a 100% Communist Lunatic.”

Everyone knows that the “big, beautiful” tax bill signed into law on the Fourth of July lowers tax burdens for families and businesses. It also averts a $4 trillion tax increase starting next year. That’s enough reason to heartily celebrate.

But what isn’t well known is that this new law doesn’t just change tax policy. It includes dozens of other long-sought policy goals – what I call “hidden gems.” Here is a list of some of the major policy victories:

The law is the most aggressive federal advancement of school choice by allowing low-income parents to direct education dollars to private, charter or Catholic schools that are better for their kids.

TRUMP SIGNS ‘BIG, BEAUTIFUL’ BILL IN SWEEPING VICTORY FOR SECOND TERM AGENDA, OVERCOMING DEMS AND GOP REBELS

The law also expands eligibility for personalized medical savings accounts instead of conventional insurance. This allows workers to control their healthcare dollars.

The law increases mining and drilling on federal lands to increase access to America’s natural resource supplies to end our dependence on the Middle East or China or Russia.

BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL IMMEDIATELY HITS THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL IN BATTLE FOR CONGRESS

The law formally ends the absurd Biden student loan forgiveness program, which forced taxpayers to swallow the costs of unpaid college loans.

The law ends the electric vehicle mandate and phases out the Green New Deal, thus allowing Americans to buy whatever car they want.

The law expands opportunity zones and extends tax benefits for investing in inner cities and economically depressed rural areas. (I thought Democrats cared about poor communities!)

The law increases the tax to 8% on the near-trillion dollars of bloated university endowments – money that was never taxed. Is there a better way to tax the privileged rich?

TRUMP TOUTS ‘VERY POPULAR’ DOMESTIC POLICY BILL AHEAD OF WHITE HOUSE SIGNING

The law strengthens work requirements for Medicaid and food stamp recipients. History shows that work requirements end welfare dependency.

The new law authorizes the sale of expanded spectrum to strengthen rural broadband, secure America’s technological dominance and reduce the national debt by nearly $100 billion.

There’s much more to shout about, but these are some of the greatest hits in a big and beautiful bill that advances America’s freedom and prosperity. Expect the economy to grow at over 3% in the years ahead, which will bend down the burden of our national debt. Is it the biggest consecutive victory in modern times? It may just be.

Former Biden official admits Trump was right about immigration: ‘We have a system’

Former President Biden’s climate czar John Kerry admitted during an interview on Thursday that President Donald Trump was “right” about the border and Democrats had let it fall under siege.

“The first thing any president should say, any president, or anybody in public life, is, without a border protected, you don’t have a nation — I believe that. If you’re going to define your nation, you have to have a border that means something,” Kerry said during an interview on BBC’s “Reflections” podcast. “We have a system. I wish President Biden had been heard more often saying, ‘I’m going to enforce the law.'”

Kerry served as former President Barack Obama‘s Secretary of State and was also the Democratic presidential nominee in 2004, losing to George W. Bush. BBC correspondent James Naughtie said during the discussion that Trump would likely point at Kerry’s remarks and declare he was right about the issue.

“He was right,” Kerry responded. “The problem is we all should have been right. Everybody should have been right, doing the same thing, all moving in the same direction.”

JOHN KERRY GETS DEFENSIVE AS MSNBC HOST POINTS OUT RUSSIA ANNEXED CRIMEA WHEN HE LED OBAMA STATE DEPARTMENT

Kerry said earlier in the discussion that he told Biden that the Democratic Party had missed on the issue of immigration.

“They just allowed the border to continue to be sieged, under siege,” Kerry said.

The former secretary of state also noted that Democrats supported an immigration bill that several Republicans and Trump opposed.

JOHN KERRY TORCHED FOR CLAIMING PEOPLE WOULD ‘FEEL BETTER’ ABOUT UKRAINE WAR IF RUSSIA REDUCED EMISSIONS

Naughtie also asked Kerry if it would have helped if Biden had announced earlier that he wasn’t going to run for re-election rather than under pressure from members of his own party.

“I think in retrospect that’s pretty clear, it answers itself,” Kerry said.

As the BBC correspondent asked if the former president knew that, Kerry said he didn’t want to speculate.

“He’s my friend, and he did a hell of a job. I don’t think he’s gotten enough credit for what a great president he was,” he said of Biden.

Trump has made cracking down on illegal immigration a focal point of his second term, launching mass deportations across the U.S.

Between June 1 and June 22, there were 5,414 apprehensions at the border, with the busiest sector being El Paso, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data. During that same timeframe, there have been 986 known “gotaways.” Both numbers are the lowest ever recorded.

In May, there were just under 9,000 apprehensions of illegal immigrants at the border, compared with roughly 118,000 the year prior under the Biden administration by CBP.

Legal move could finally shed light on Bryan Kohberger’s motive in Idaho slayings

A group of media outlets large and small has asked an Idaho judge to lift the gag order surrounding the Bryan Kohberger case, now that he has pleaded guilty and there is no investigation to protect.

At a change of plea hearing last week, prosecutors asked to have the gag, officially called a “non-dissemination order,” remain in place until Kohberger’s official sentencing on July 23. Kohberger’s defense did not object, and Judge Steven Hippler granted the request.

Then-Magistrate Judge Megan Marshall put the gag order in place days after Kohberger’s arrest at his parents’ house on Dec. 30, 2022. The stated aim was to protect Kohberger’s right to a fair trial by limiting extrajudicial information available to the potential jury pool.

BRYAN KOHBERGER ACCEPTS PLEA DEAL IN IDAHO STUDENT MURDERS CASE

Much of the case proceeded behind closed doors until Hippler became the third judge to preside over the case following a change of venue that moved it from Latah County to Ada County.

Still, there are many questions that remain unanswered, and under the order, lawyers, investigators and other witnesses have been blocked from discussing details that haven’t already surfaced in the courtroom. And the terms of the plea deal did not require Kohberger to explain his actions.

Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson hasn’t held a news briefing since before Kohberger’s extradition to Idaho in January 2023. The defense never has.

HOW BRYAN KOHBERGER’S NOTORIOUSLY MUM DEFENSE ATTORNEY IS USING THE MEDIA TO HER ADVANTAGE

But now that Kohberger has admitted to the murders, there is no risk to his right to a fair trial, according to the motion. There won’t be a trial at all.

“The Nondissemination Order, and its infringement on the First Amendment rights of the media, is no longer justifiable and should be vacated immediately,” the motion continues.

IDAHO MURDERS TIMELINE: BRYAN KOHBERGER PLEA CAPS YEARSLONG QUEST FOR JUSTICE

The media coalition includes FOX News, The Associated Press, other major outlets and a number of smaller Idaho publications – including The Argonaut, the student paper at the University of Idaho, where the victims were killed.

Kohberger last week admitted to four first-degree murders – killing University of Idaho students Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20. He told the court, with his parents looking on, that he entered their house, which has since been demolished, around 4 a.m. on Nov. 13, 2022, with the intent to kill.

The guilty plea will spare him from the potential death penalty. He is expected to receive four consecutive terms of life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus another 10 years. And he forfeited his right to appeal and to seek a sentence reduction.

Federal judge halts bribery trial against politician who allegedly accepted ‘expensive’ gifts

A federal judge ruled that a 76-year-old former Chicago alderman accused of bribery and lying to the FBI is unfit for trial, saying it would have an “adverse effect” on her health.

Carrie Austin was indicted by a federal grand jury in July 2021 “for allegedly conspiring to receive home improvements from construction contractors seeking city assistance for a development project” in her Far South Side ward, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois said at the time.

Austin, who spent nearly 30 years on the Chicago City Council before resigning in 2023, pleaded not guilty to the charges, according to Fox32 Chicago. Her attorneys argued that the trial, scheduled for November 2025, should be postponed indefinitely as Austin was dealing with serious health problems such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart ailments and cancer, the station added.

“Merely the act of showering or walking from room to room in her house is strenuous for the Defendant, so there is no doubt that traveling to and from the courthouse, sitting in trial all day, and traveling to meet with her attorneys at night, even with the aid of a scooter, will have an ‘adverse effect’ on her health compared to resting at home as she currently does most of the time,” Judge John Kness was quoted as saying in his ruling, after consulting with doctors.

CHICAGO MAYOR VOWS CITY POLICE ‘WILL NOT EVER COOPERATE WITH ICE’

Federal prosecutors said Austin was charged with one count of conspiring to use interstate facilities to promote bribery, two counts of using interstate facilities to promote bribery, and one count of willfully making materially false statements to the FBI.

“According to the indictment, starting in 2014 a construction company planned to construct a residential development in Austin’s ward at a cost of approximately $49.6 million,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

It added that beginning in 2016, Austin and her chief of staff, Chester Wilson, “were provided with personal benefits by the owner of the construction company and other contractors in an effort to influence them in their official capacities.”

OUSTED DEM ‘SUPER MAYOR’ CHARGES WHOPPING PRICE TAG FOR TELL-ALL BOOK WHILE DODGING LEGAL TROUBLES

“According to the charges, in June 2017 a contractor on the development project paid an invoice for $5,250 to cover a portion of the purchase price of kitchen cabinets at Austin’s residence by falsely representing that the cabinets were for an address within the development,” prosecutors said. “In addition, in July 2017 Austin accepted from a contractor on the project an offer to pay for two ‘brand new’ and ‘expensive’ sump pumps, and to have the contractor’s family member buy and install a new dehumidifier, the indictment states.”

In 2021, Austin collapsed during a City Council meeting because of her lung conditions and was rushed to a hospital, Fox32 Chicago reported, citing court documents.

The station said years later, federal prosecutors tried to refute her claims of being medically unfit, arguing a surveillance video showed Austin walking in and out of a salon without help.

However, Judge Kness ultimately ruled her unfit for trial, noting that Austin’s current state would make it hard for her to meet with her legal team and participate in her own defense.

American underdog stuns top-ranked Sabalenka in shocking Wimbledon upset

American tennis star Amanda Anisimova upset world No. 1-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in three sets to advance to the Wimbledon women’s final on Thursday at the All England Club.

Anisimova, 23, won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a grueling three-set match.

The victory for Anisimova sends her to a Grand Slam tournament final for the first time in her career.

The only other time she had played in a Grand Slam semifinal prior to her win over Sabalenka was at the 2019 French Open, when she lost as a 17-year-old.

The loss for Sabalenka was the third loss she has sustained in the Wimbledon semifinal in her career, with the other two coming in 2021 and 2023.

Sabalenka had been outstanding at rallying back after dropping the first set in major tournaments as the world No. 1 ranked player was 11-2 in major tournaments when losing the first set going into this match.

Prior to this match, Sabalenka had only lost one set in the entire tournament.

Anisimova now owns a 6-3 record against Sabalenka in her career.

Kathy Griffin questions legitimacy of Trump’s 2024 presidential election victory

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Comedian Kathy Griffin said she doesn’t believe President Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election, and doesn’t care if people call her “Tinfoil hat” in response.

“People think I’m tinfoil hat because I don’t think he won in a free and fair election this time” Griffin said during a Substack Live with writer E. Jean Carroll, posted Tuesday on Griffin’s YouTube channel, in response to a question from Carroll about who won the election.

“No, I’m going to take a hit for that, and I understand, but that’s just my humble opinion,” Griffin added.

DON LEMON, KATHY GRIFFIN AGREE ‘SOMETHING WAS OFF’ ABOUT 2024 ELECTION, SUGGEST ELECTION TAMPERING

In the clip flagged by The Daily Caller’s Jason Cohen, she also said she is suspicious of Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, Inc., who headed up Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and was assigned to trim $2 trillion from the federal government’s budget.

Musk announced he was leaving DOGE in a post on X on May 28, and has been critical of various proposals from Trump, including the 47th president’s “big, beautiful bill” which he signed into law on July 4.

“I don’t trust the Elon connection,” Griffin said. “I have my suspicions and yet at the tender age of 64, I never thought I would say something. And I know that sounds crazy, but I just had to put that out there because I can’t resist getting in trouble.”

Carroll, who accused Trump of sexually abusing her in the 1990s, told Griffin that “there’s a wave of people who agree with you.”

“That’s why I’m sort of saying it out loud now because look, I’m not a conspiracy theorist,” Carroll said. “But something about him winning every swing state, all seven …  it doesn’t sit right with me. But I also don’t know if we’ll really find out anything in my lifetime.”

During a recent conversation with Don Lemon, Griffin made similar remarks, saying that “I do not think Trump won in a free and fair election. I believe there was tampering.”

DeSantis’ tax cut could create a ‘perfect storm’ for Florida real estate

On the surface, not paying property taxes may sound nice. However, real estate experts in the Sunshine State seem to be at odds over the issue.

Gov. Ron DeSantis recently doubled down on completely eliminating property taxes, a move that would crown Florida as the only U.S. region with no state income or property tax, and live up to its “free state” moniker. While many may view lower taxes as an attractive play, there could be unintended consequences.

“I don’t see how this could possibly hurt anybody that’s going to vote to pass it, but again, it’s all going to come down to exactly what gets affected, because I know that that money does need to be replaced somehow, somewhere by someone,” Continuum Realty President Phil Gutman told Fox News Digital.

“I am a native Floridian, and I believe that we have created an environment which is among the best in the entire country as far as the balance of business-friendly and lifestyle, and it is imperative that we maintain that advantage that we have,” Budge Huskey, president and CEO of Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, also told Fox News Digital.

FLORIDA COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE BOOM FUELED BY FINANCIAL AND TECH EXECUTIVES RELOCATING SINCE PANDEMIC

“But at the same time, it has to be responsible, and it has to be based on real numbers.”

Lawmakers are reportedly evaluating a number of changes to the state’s housing structure, including a $500,000 homestead exemption (maximum $1 million for seniors), capping property assessment increases at 15% and eliminating property taxes altogether.

“Property taxes effectively require homeowners to pay rent to the government,” DeSantis said in the original press release. “Constitutional protections for Florida homeowners require approval of the voters in 2026. In the meantime, Floridians need relief. I am today proposing a plan that will result in—on average—$1,000 rebate checks for each homestead as a discount on their property taxes. If the Legislature acts on this plan now, we can get this done this year.”

DeSantis’ office pitched the proposal in March, and has since vetoed a study on property taxes that evaluates how local governments use tax revenue and what happens if they are reduced. U.S. House Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., said he supports the veto on “Mornings with Maria,” Tuesday, as it would reveal “what we already know.”

“It’s been annoying me paying those property taxes since I bought a home. So for me, obviously, it sounded great and it sounds great. I’ve followed it closely. I know there’s still a lot of detail left to what he’s proposing,” Gutman reacted. “I have gotten a lot of calls, a lot of questions from clients, potential buyers, a lot of people out of the Northeast and all over the country, for that matter, asking my thoughts on it and what the probability of something like that happening. So for me, I very much welcome it. I think it would be great.”

“It’s creating really a perfect storm for us to be completely flooded with buyers,” he added. “Why wouldn’t you want to move here at that point?”

“I think we’re all of the same mindset that lower taxes are better as long as it’s done with a methodology that is sensible, and it actually allows for the investments that are necessary to maintain the quality of life that is also such a key aspect of attracting future residents or retaining residents within the state,” Huskey agreed before rebutting, “at the end of the day, you cannot simply lower property taxes or eliminate property taxes without replacing at least a significant majority of that revenue through alternative means.”

The Florida Policy Institute reports that property taxes generate $55 billion annually and account for 18% of county revenues, 17% of municipal revenues and up to 60% of public education funds. The group estimates that Florida’s sales tax may need to rise from 6% to 12% to account for the potential property tax loss.

“When you look at the amount of revenue that is collected in property taxes within this state and the implications, if the math is wrong on any of this, especially in the absence of clarity as to alternative funding, to suggest that an investment of $1,000,000, which is a pittance compared to what we are looking at shifting in terms of revenues, it makes no financial or business sense to me,” Huskey argued.

HUNGRY FLORIDA BOATERS SHELL OUT ‘BEST $50 EVER SPENT’ FOR FAST FOOD DELIVERED AT SEA

“It appears as though people do not wish to actually have a thoughtful, well-researched basis on which decisions are made.”

During an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity last week, Florida’s governor teased an “entry tax” for a new wave of residents that could be enticed by zero property taxes in order to make up for the loss of revenue.

“For the real estate world, it doesn’t benefit or negatively affect us in any way. Obviously, it depends on how much that entry tax would be,” Gutman said. “At some point, you have to be okay with paying some sort of fee and entry tax or whatever it takes to get here.”

“From the standpoint of real estate sales in general, it would be very much a positive,” Huskey noted. “However, I do think that in order to try to offset any kind of entry tax, [it] would have to be almost at an exorbitant level based upon the current migration that we have. We are not experiencing the same levels of migration that we had during COVID by any stretch of the imagination.”

“Who’s gonna build the roads? Who’s gonna fund the [police]? Who’s going to fund education? Who’s to do all the things that need to be done to have a productive society?” Huskey also posed. “It gets back to the fact that everybody wants lower taxes, but it must be strategic.”

“We have created an environment which is among the best in the entire country as far as the balance of business-friendly and lifestyle, and it is imperative that we maintain that advantage that we have.”

– Budge Huskey

“I don’t think he’s gonna do anything that’s going to make the roadways less safe, the schooling worse. He’s just not that type of a governor,” Gutman countered. “He truly cares, in my opinion, about the people and the state of Florida. So he’s not gonna do something that’s gonna have a negative impact from Jacksonville down.”

Both industry execs additionally addressed concerns that this proposal disproportionately favors the area’s wealthiest residents.

“When you pass a law like that and eliminate property taxes, it’s obviously gonna benefit a lot of people that really didn’t need that benefit to begin with, right? But that’s just a really small percentage of the people that will be positively impacted… Something like this is a really broad stroke that will be across the entire state. And, ultimately, I do think that there’s a lot of people who are in need of it,” Gutman said.

“I tend to believe it is a very regressive form of tax because, ultimately, the burden is going to fall on a percentage basis to those with more limited means,” Huskey said. “The elimination of property taxes essentially strips municipalities of any kind of local decisions with regard to funding.”

“I am very much in favor of overall studies to examine what is the best methodology for raising revenues in the state and whether that involves a reduction in property taxes as part of the mix… at the end of the day, I’m a business person. I run a large business. I know the numbers. And I want to have somebody show me the numbers rather than legislating in the absence of clarity,” Huskey concluded.
