Tim Walz slammed for spending nearly $500k in public funds for hearing prep
Republican state lawmakers in Minnesota have not held back with criticism after news Gov. Tim Walz spent $430,000 in taxpayer money to prepare for a House congressional hearing probing blue state governors on their “sanctuary city” policies.
Invoices obtained by the Star Tribune of Minnesota uncovered that Walz’s office contracted with high-powered global law firm K&L Gates to prepare for the governor’s mid-June hearing in front of the GOP-controlled House Oversight Committee, which included questions about his and other blue state governors’ “sanctuary city” policies.
In May alone, Walz incurred legal fees of around $232,000, according to invoices the Star Tribune obtained. This balanced out to a rate of about $516 per hour, the local outlet noted.
In total, according to the Star Tribune, K&L Gates worked with Walz’s office from April 10 until the June 12 hearing, costing taxpayers $430,000 for the legal preparation.
TAXPAYERS COULD BE FORCED TO FUND TRUMP FOE LETITIA JAMES’ LEGAL DEFENSE IF DEM BUDGET ITEM PASSES
Minnesota GOP Rep. Jim Nash, one of two Republicans on the state’s Legislative Advisory Commission, questioned why Walz felt compelled to get outside counsel rather than work with the state’s attorneys and public relations specialists.
“A half a million dollars of taxpayer money to prepare the governor to go to his old stomping grounds seems exorbitant, particularly since the AG for the state of Minnesota was in Congress with Walz at the same time, and the two of them certainly could have figured out how to do what they were needing to do,” he said.
Nash added that he intends to dig deeper into scrutinizing the invoices obtained by the Star Tribune.
NEW BOOK SHEDS LIGHT ON HARRIS’ DECISION TO PICK WALZ AS HER RUNNING MATE OVER SHAPIRO: ‘WENT WITH HER GUT’
Republican Minnesota state Rep. Harry Niska noted there “appears to be no legitimate legal interest in the state racking up nearly half-a-million dollars in what amounts to PR consulting.”
“Tim Walz spent 12 years in Congress — he knows those hearing rooms inside and out, and he certainly knows how to conduct himself in that type of setting. So, why did the governor feel the need to spend $430,000 of taxpayer money on a private firm to ‘prepare’ for this hearing?” Niska asked.
“To be clear, there appears to be no legitimate legal interest of the state in racking up nearly half a million dollars in what amounts to PR consulting as he tries to lay the groundwork for a presidential campaign that’s going absolutely nowhere. It is unconscionable to make hardworking Minnesota taxpayers pay for the governor’s personal national political aspirations.”
In response to the criticism over Walz’s decision to contract with K&L Gates, both the governor and his team sidestepped offering an explanation. Instead, they suggested the blame fell at the feet of Republicans for holding a hearing that served no other purpose than to “grandstand,” according to the Star Tribune.
TIM WALZ CRITICIZED FOR ‘NAIVE’ CLAIM ON WORLD’S ‘MORAL AUTHORITY’: ‘MIGHT BE THE CHINESE’
Teddy Tschann, a Walz spokesperson, described the hearing as a “planned political stunt on the taxpayer dime,” the Star Tribune reported.
“They were too busy performing for the cameras to even feign interest in hearing from Gov. Walz about Minnesota’s balanced approach to immigration,” Tschann added. “What’s most frustrating is that Tom Emmer and Pete Stauber planned this spectacle knowing what it would cost and went through with it anyway.”
When asked directly about the legal bill, Walz told reporters the GOP-led hearing was “not where I wanted to spend money. It’s not where I wanted to spend my time, and it certainly proved that there was nothing there other than using it as grandstanding.”

While the hefty legal bill has garnered Walz backlash this week, it wouldn’t be the first time a governor has paid hundreds of thousands of dollars on legal advice. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said earlier this year after attending a hearing in the nation’s capital she expected to pay around $650,000 to the law firm that helped her prepare.
The City of Denver also forked over $250,000 for outside legal counsel earlier this year to prepare the city’s mayor, Mike Johnston, for a congressional hearing.
Fox News Digital reached out to Walz’s office and K&L Gates for comment but did not receive a response from either.
Young crew member brutally murdered aboard luxury superyacht in paradise destination
A 20-year-old South African woman was found dead aboard a luxury superyacht in the Bahamas, and a fellow crewmember has reportedly been charged in connection with her murder.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) said the woman was discovered dead with visible injuries in the engine room of the vessel on July 3, while it was docked at a marina off Harbour Island. Paige Bell, a stewardess from Johannesburg, was identified as the victim by her family on social media.
Authorities said Bell was reported missing shortly before 1:00 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene, they found her unresponsive, along with a 39-year-old man who was “suffering from severe injuries to his arms,” which police believe were the result of a suicide attempt.
A local doctor pronounced Bell dead on board, according to the RBPF statement posted publicly on July 3.
TOURIST WHO MISSED NORWEGIAN CRUISE SHIP DISCOVERED DEAD ON MOUNTAIN TRAIL IN ALASKA
The man was later identified in court as Brigido Muñoz, a Mexican national and engineer aboard the vessel, according to Our News Bahamas. Police said Muñoz was taken into custody, treated at a medical clinic, and charged with murder on Wednesday, July 9, in Magistrate Court in Nassau. He was denied bail and is scheduled to return to court on November 20, the outlet reported.
“This evening, Mom and Dad… are flying to the Bahamas to begin the painful process of not only bringing their baby girl home, but also seeking justice for the monster that took her life,” her sister Chelsey wrote in a public post shared on Facebook on Sunday.
In a separate family statement, Bell’s relatives confirmed her identity and described her death as “brutal.”
COLLEGE SENIOR KILLED AFTER ‘ACCIDENTALLY’ FALLING FROM TROPICAL ISLAND HOTEL BALCONY DAYS BEFORE GRADUATION
“It is with broken hearts that we share the devastating news that our beautiful Paigey’s life was brutally taken from us,” the family said on July 4. “We will leave no stone unturned until the guilty is brought to justice.”
Harbour Island, where the yacht was docked at the time of the incident, is a small but exclusive destination about 60 miles east of Nassau, known for attracting celebrity visitors and superyachts.
Bell had previously worked on the motor yacht Sweet Emocean, where former crewmates described her as “more than a teammate — she was family.”
A GoFundMe page created by colleagues and friends has raised more than $42,000 to assist the Bell family with travel and legal costs as well as to retrieve her body. According to the fundraiser, Bell would have turned 21 on July 14. In her honor, her mother has asked supporters to eat red velvet cake, Paige’s favorite, and share a photo in remembrance.
The RBPF said the murder investigation remains active, and authorities have not released a potential motive.

‘Recent discoveries’ prompt Texas lawmaker to end 38-year marriage to embattled AG
Texas state Sen. Angela Paxton announced Thursday that she’s filed for divorce from state Attorney General Ken Paxton, her longtime husband.
“Today, after 38 years of marriage, I filed for divorce on biblical grounds,” the state senator wrote in a social media post.
“I believe marriage is a sacred covenant and I have earnestly pursued reconciliation,” she added. “But in light of recent discoveries, I do not believe that it honors God or is loving to myself, my children, or Ken to remain in the marriage.”
Ken Paxton is currently running against longtime Republican Sen. John Cornyn in next year’s GOP primary, in what’s shaping up to be a bruising and nasty Senate nomination battle.
TRUMP ALLY PAXTON LAUNCHES SENATE PRIMARY CHALLENGE IN TEXAS
Paxton, who first won election as Texas attorney general in 2014 and has been re-elected twice, was impeached a couple of years ago by the Texas House of Representatives on allegations of corruption, which included claims related to an extramarital affair.
RED STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL LAUNCHES ELECTION INTEGRITY PROBE
The attorney general, who has long been a major supporter and ally of President Donald Trump, was later acquitted by the state Senate.
“After facing the pressures of countless political attacks and public scrutiny, Angela and I have decided to start a new chapter in our lives,” Ken Paxton said in a statement.
The attorney general added that “I could not be any more proud or grateful for the incredible family that God has blessed us with, and I remain committed to supporting our amazing children and grandchildren. I ask for your prayers and privacy at this time.”
While Trump has stayed neutral so far in the Senate primary in Texas, Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) are backing Cornyn.
“What Ken Paxton has put his family through is truly repulsive and disgusting. No one should have to endure what Senator Paxton has, and we pray for her as she chooses to stand up for herself and her family during this difficult time,” NRSC communications director Joanna Rodriguez said in a statement to Fox News.

Judge adds session to Abrego Garcia hearing, complains ICE witness ‘knew nothing’
GREENBELT, Md. – U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis ordered lawyers for the Justice Department and Salvadoran migrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia to return to court Friday morning for another day of hearings as she continues to weigh next steps in the civil case. Those steps include an effort by Abrego’s attorneys to preempt the Trump administration’s plans to deport him to a third country as early as next week.
Xinis made the call for an additional day of arguments at 5:30 p.m. over the stated objections of Justice Department lawyers, who told her that at least two of them had prior obligations and could not appear in court. For her part, Xinis was unsympathetic.
She said the witness they provided to the court “took four times as long as he should have” in testimony “because he knew nothing.”
“That’s on the government,” Xinis said pointedly. “If you want to discuss that now, we can.”
Both parties were ordered to appear in court at 9 a.m. Friday to continue arguments.
FEDERAL JUDGE BLOCKS TRUMP’S BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP BAN FOR ALL INFANTS, TESTING LOWER COURT POWERS
Xinis also suggested the possibility of a temporary restraining order, by which the government would agree to certain things, such as requirements that ICE keep Abrego Garcia in immigration custody for at least 48 hours before he is removed and that they keep him in local immigration detention facilities and do not “spirit him away to Nome, Alaska,” to prevent access to counsel before his removal.
“However, I’m not willing to just allow an unfettered release of Abrego Garcia,” if he is released from U.S. custody in Tennessee next Wednesday, she said. “I want full-throated assurances,” and there remains “much delta” between where they ended things Thursday and where she had hoped the court would be at the end of Thursday’s hearing.
The extended arguments capped a lengthy day of testimony in court led by witness Thomas Giles, the assistant director for ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations office.
Judge Xinis had ordered the government to produce for the court a witness with “personal knowledge” of Abrego Garcia’s case to testify, under oath, about the “who, what, where, and when” in regards to Abrego Garcia’s case and the government’s stated plans to take him into ICE custody pending release from criminal detention in Tennessee and deport him to a third country.
FEDERAL PROSECUTORS TELL JUDGE THEY WILL DEPORT KILMAR ABREGO GARCIA TO A THIRD COUNTRY AFTER DETENTION
Little new information was provided. Giles said he was notified by a senior DHS official Tuesday morning at 7:47 a.m. Pacific Time about his role in the hearing, and that he had spent an estimated “3-4 hours” total prepping for the appearance.
He could not offer the court new information about third-country removals despite his 24 years at ICE, noting repeatedly that he had little familiarity with the procedures and had not had direct involvement with any such cases for the past 18 years.
Xinis, who spoke little during the proceedings, appeared taken aback by the lack of knowledge from Giles, despite his status as a top-ranking ICE official. She said she planned to continue the questions Friday and will likely address the lack of knowledge from a key government witness.
Xinis breezed past objections that the two Justice Department attorneys might not be available to argue, and dismissed the notion they have moved their schedules around to be accommodating.
“I have 400 cases,” she replied.
The request came after Justice Department officials conceded at a hearing earlier this week that Abrego Garcia could be removed from the U.S. as soon as July 16, nine days from today, when a federal judge in Tennessee will consider whether he should be freed and transferred to DHS custody.
Abrego Garcia, currently held by U.S. Marshals in Tennessee, was returned from El Salvador in June, three months after his deportation and weeks after the Supreme Court backed Xinis’ order to arrangre his return.
Upon arrival, Abrego was immediately slapped with federal charges from a 2022 traffic stop. Justice Department officials acknowledged in court this week they plan to immediately take him into ICE custody as early as this month and deport him to a third country, regardless of the status of his criminal case.
Xinis, who is handling his civil case, grilled Trump administration lawyers for details Monday as to when they opened a federal investigation into Abrego Garcia in the U.S. Middle District of Tennessee and how the timing of the investigation and federal indictment squared with the government’s testimony in her own court.
SCOTUS DENIES FLORIDA AG REQUEST TO ENFORCE CONTROVERSIAL IMMIGRATION LAW
She took umbrage at the dueling timelines of the criminal investigation, noting that, by the government’s own admission, it began investigating Abrego Garcia in the Middle District in Tennessee April 28, 2025, the same time officials were telling the court that the administration was powerless to order a foreign government to return Abrego Garcia in compliance with the court order.
“Now I have real concerns — as if I haven’t for the last three months,” Xinis noted in response.
JUDGE XINIS GRILLS TRUMP LAWYERS OVER PLANS TO DEPORT ABREGO GARCIA IN HIGH-PROFILE HEARING
Justice Department lawyers also told Xinis they do not plan to keep him in the U.S. until his trial is over.
“No,” Justice Department attorney Jonathan Guynn answered simply.

“There’s no intention to just put him in limbo in ICE custody while we wait for the criminal case to unfold,” Guynn told Xinis. “He will be removed, as would any other illegal alien in that process.”
“Given the series of unlawful actions” here, I feel like it’s well within my authority to order this hearing — perhaps more than one — to hear testimony from at least one witness with firsthand knowledge, who can answer these questions about the immediate next steps” from the government pending Abrego Garca’s release from custody, Xinis said.
Trump’s Mar-a-Lago security team thwarts another potential threat at Florida estate
A woman was arrested after approaching Mar-a-Lago, claiming she had “an urgent message” for President Donald Trump and stating that there were guns inside her vehicle.
The woman, identified as Caroline Shaw, 49, of Orlando, was detained July 7 on accusations of driving with a suspended license and failing to register her vehicle, according to court documents obtained by Fox News Digital.
At the time of the incident, Trump was in Washington, D.C., when Shaw allegedly drove what was described by law enforcement as a Mercedes van to the south gate of Mar-a-Lago shortly before 10 p.m. and parked along Southern Boulevard. According to an arrest report, she then walked to the gate and told U.S. Secret Service agents she needed to “speak with Trump urgently.”
Shaw then informed agents there were guns in her vehicle. Based on Shaw’s claim, agents took her into custody and “secured the vehicle pending further investigation.”
MAN CAUGHT SCALING MAR-A-LAGO WALL WANTED TO ‘MARRY’ TRUMP’S GRANDDAUGHTER, ‘SPREAD THE GOSPEL’: REPORT
It was not disclosed if guns were found inside Shaw’s vehicle.
Records indicate Shaw’s driver’s license had also been suspended since April 23, 2023, due to unpaid traffic fines, and her car’s registration expired in December 2021.
On July 9, Shaw remained in custody at the Palm Beach County Jail on $2,000 bond. She entered a not-guilty plea during a court appearance July 8, where a judge prohibited her from going near Trump, Mar-a-Lago or any of his properties.
In addition to the vehicle-related misdemeanors, Palm Beach Police also filed a request for a risk protection order, which would bar Shaw from possessing guns or ammunition for at least one year.
FEDERAL GRAND JURY INDICTS MAN FOR THREATENING TO ASSASSINATE TRUMP AFTER REELECTION
Shaw’s arrest is the latest in several recent security incidents involving individuals attempting to access Mar-a-Lago.
Among the other notable arrests:
Zijie Li, 39, a Chinese citizen from California, was arrested July 31 after multiple alleged attempts to enter Mar-a-Lago. He was later found incompetent to stand trial.
Patrick Webster Warren, 42, of South Carolina was taken into custody Aug. 13 after bypassing barricades. He told officers he wanted Trump’s autograph.
FLORIDA CHARGES TRUMP ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT SUSPECT WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER, TERRORISM
Farbod Dolat, 53, of Sarasota was arrested Nov. 14 for allegedly driving a stolen vehicle to the estate to meet Trump. He faces felony charges.
Ruby Rodriguez, 62, of California, was charged with trespassing in December after trying to gain access to the club. She was sentenced to probation.
A teenager was apprehended Dec. 5 after allegedly planning to graffiti “Carthage vs. Rome” on a Mar-a-Lago wall.
Bijan Arceo, 32, of Sunny Isles Beach, jumped the estate’s wall in January. He was diverted to a pretrial program with community service and conditions to avoid further arrests or contact with the property.
Jeffrey Daniel Olson was arrested in February for entering restricted grounds and faces federal charges.
Adrienne Tajirian, 58, from Pennsylvania, attempted to dine with Donald Trump Jr. in April. She was sentenced to probation in May.

Anthony Thomas Reyes, 23, of Texas, was arrested June 3 after reportedly scaling the estate’s wall, claiming he wanted to “spread the gospel” and marry Trump’s granddaughter. He was released on $50,000 bond after pleading not guilty to a misdemeanor trespassing charge.

WNBA star taunts Trump supporters after controversial remarks about ICE, socialism
New York Liberty player Natasha Cloud has been busy on social media bragging about getting reactions out of Trump supporters.
Cloud sent a post on Thursday that read, “Day 3 of me living rent free in the Trumpies heads,” with a gif of a small child.
On Wednesday, Cloud sent a post that read, “Yall I made the Trumpers mad again. This like an every week occurance now…..not I’m getting to y’all”

Cloud’s posts come just days after she made controversial comments about Trump and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement while speaking to reporters earlier in the week. Cloud, who has been a vocal supporter of socialist New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, gave praise for the candidate while warning Trump against sending ICE to the city.
“Mamdani, my boy!” she told reporters following a New York Liberty practice.
She added, “If Donny wants to come down here, if ICE wants to try and come down here, that’s fine.”
“But [they’re] going to learn the hard way… New Yorkers really don’t f— around. They don’t play about one another. The don’t play about this city.”
Cloud went on to deliver a lengthy rant about her support for socialism and belief that Trump’s opposition is “getting to them.”
“I just think that it’s reckless of our president, reckless of this administration but it’s also exciting for us, the people, because that’s when you know we’re getting to them,”
“That’s when you know we’re creating change that they don’t want. That’s when you know we’re dismantling a system. For all of us in New York I’m just gonna ask that we continue to be on the right path to history, that we protect one another, that we protect Mamdani and what he wants to do.
SOPHIE CUNNINGHAM CALLS OUT WNBA REFS FOR NOT PROTECTING CAITLIN CLARK AFTER STARTING FIGHT TO PROTECT HER
“Because ultimately he wants to protect us down the line. He is a Muslim, he is a socialist, he is a Democrat so he’s going to get the worst PR of all PRs. They’re going to tell you to be scared of him, all this Islamophobia s—, that a socialist is a scary thing for our country moving forwards.
“Socialism is that everyone has equity, everyone has the same s—, everyone can live the same dignified life of one another and he’s going to do it through taxing the rich instead of taxing the poor to give more to the rich.”
Cloud was heavily criticized for the comments on social media this week.
Cloud has emerged as one of the most polarizing figures in the WNBA for comments about Trump.
She seemingly reacted to the U.S. military’s strikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities on Saturday night, writing on X, “A sad sad day,” and “Grounds for impeachment.”
She later wrote, “I pi—d all the tumplicans off again It’s okay to admit y’all were wrong. [And] also I feel as if it’s only right y’all enlist for the frontlines first. Not other peoples sons and daughters.”
In February, Cloud responded to President Donald Trump’s decision to eliminate several government DEI programs.
“The systems of power are working as they always were intended to work,” Cloud told The Associated Press. “And it’s time to break down a system that has only been about White men.”
Cloud added that she believes the country is putting “money over people.”
“I understand the business aspect and I understand the human aspect,” Cloud said. “Too often this country has put the human aspect aside, and put profit and money over people.”
Cloud doubled down on her remarks in a social media post days later.

Judge delivers big ruling as ex-CNN anchor Don Lemon wages legal battle against Elon Musk
Ex-CNN anchor Don Lemon’s lawsuit against Elon Musk and his social media platform X can go to trial, a judge ruled Tuesday.
San Francisco Superior Court Judge Harold E. Kahn ruled that Lemon can proceed with his lawsuit against Musk after the billionaire X owner unsuccessfully tried to get the case venue moved to Texas late last year, The Wrap reported.
“The ruling means Don can hold X and Musk accountable in open court. Musk is subject to the legal process, just like everyone else, and that’s important,” the former CNN host’s lawyer, Carney Shegerian, said in a recent statement.
JD VANCE SAYS IT WAS A ‘HUGE MISTAKE’ FOR MUSK TO GO AFTER TRUMP WITH EPSTEIN ACCUSATION
“There’s no question about Musk’s motives and liability, as documented in his own texts and on X for millions to see,” the attorney added.
Lemon first filed his lawsuit against Musk last August, alleging that the X owner breached their contract and failed to pay him after canceling the journalist’s show and partnership with the platform. This happened following an interview the two had last year that angered Musk, who called the sit-down “invasive and charged.”
“Elon Musk has canceled the partnership I had with X, which they announced as part of their public commitment to amplifying more diverse voices on their platform. He informed me of his decision hours after an interview I conducted with him on Friday,” Lemon wrote on X in March 2024.
Lemon filed suit last August for, among other things, alleged fraud, misrepresentation, and breach of contract.
MUSK’S QUESTION ABOUT CREATING NEW POLITICAL PARTY PIQUES STEPHEN A SMITH’S INTEREST AMID CEO’S TRUMP FEUD
Lemon’s interview with Musk was intended to be the premiere episode of “The Don Lemon Show” on the Tesla owner’s social media platform.
“There were no restrictions on the interview that he willingly agreed to, and my questions were respectful and wide-ranging, covering everything from SpaceX to the presidential election,” Lemon said at the time.
X provided a statement on ending its contract with Lemon that it championed free speech and welcomed him to publish its content on the platform without censorship.
“However, like any enterprise, we reserve the right to make decisions about our business partnerships, and after careful consideration, X decided not to enter into a commercial partnership with the show,” the statement said.
