Trump set to impose new tariff rate on Canadian goods starting Aug. 1

President Donald Trump is threatening to impose an additional tariff of 35% on Canadian goods on Aug. 1, after accusing the U.S. neighbor to the north of failing to stop the flow of fentanyl into the country and instead retaliating with its own tariffs.

In a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday that Trump posted on Truth Social, he said it was a great honor to send a letter demonstrating the strength and commitment of the U.S. and Canada’s trading relationship. But he also pointed to a relationship gone sour, stating that the U.S. has agreed to continue working together, despite Canada imposing tariffs against the U.S.

“As you will recall, the United States imposed Tariffs on Canada to deal with our Nation’s Fentanyl crisis, which is caused, in part, by Canada’s failure to stop the drugs from pouring into our Country,” Trump wrote. “Instead of working with the United States, Canada retaliated with its own tariffs. Starting August 1, 2025, we will charge Canada a Tariff of 35% on Canadian products sent into the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs.

Any goods shipped in a way that evades the 35% tariff, Trump said, will be subject to the higher tariff.

“As you are aware, there will be no Tariff if Canada, or companies within your Country, decide to build or manufacture product within the United States and, in fact, we will do everything possible to get approvals quickly, professionally, and routinely – In other words, in a matter of weeks,” the president said.

“If for any reason you decide to raise your Tariffs, then, whatever the number you choose to raise them by, will be added onto the 35% that we charge,” he continued.

TRUMP ANNOUNCES HIGHER TARIFF RATES FOR MORE COUNTRIES IN LETTERS PUBLISHED ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Trump then turned his attention to the “extraordinary Tariffs” Canada imposes on dairy farmers, which the president said is upwards of 400%, assuming U.S. farmers can sell their products to the people of Canada.

“If Canada works with me to stop the flow of Fentanyl, we will, perhaps, consider an adjustment to this letter,” Trump wrote. “These Tariffs may be modified, upward or downward, depending on our relationship with your Country. You will never be disappointed with the United States of America.”

TRUMP ANNOUNCES 25% TARIFFS ON JAPAN, SOUTH KOREA

Earlier this year, President Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian steel, automobiles and other goods not covered under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

Canada retaliated by imposing $43 billion worth of its own tariffs against the U.S.

Former California rock star slams Trump, ‘corruption’ in surprise campaign launch

OneRepublic co-founder and former bassist Tim Myers announced his campaign for California lieutenant governor on Monday.

On his campaign website, he cited “a broken political system” and “Trump’s attacks on California” as reasons behind his decision.

“He’ll bring a fresh, strong voice to the Lt. Governor’s office to fight back against the Trump administration’s attacks, take on the rigged system with commonsense solutions, and ensure every Californian has the opportunity to chase their dreams, can afford to make a living here, and feels safe,” his website reads.

CALIFORNIA LT. GOVERNOR SAYS LOS ANGELES RIOTS ARE ‘GENERATED BY DONALD TRUMP’

Myers had previously announced a run for the U.S. House of Representatives in April. He explained his shift in campaigns in an Instagram post on Monday.

“I’ve heard from neighbors and friends whose homes and small businesses were robbed. I’ve watched homelessness grow. I’ve seen backdoor deals and political corruption—not just from Trump and his billionaire allies in Washington, but right here in our own backyard in California. I’ve stood shoulder to shoulder with protesters demanding change. But when I looked, I didn’t see our state politicians standing with us. And I realized: I can’t stay silent. I can’t stay on the sidelines,” his Instagram post read.

On TMZ Live Thursday, Myers went further and attacked his fellow lieutenant governor candidates for “not standing up” and using the position as a way to climb the political ladder.

“Every single candidate that’s running right now for lieutenant governor said they want to be governor someday and they’re climbing the political ladder,” Myers said. “You know the only ladder I care about is the working people here in California climbing up the ladder. They literally can’t afford to buy homes or pay for their rent or pay for groceries or put gas in their tank. So I think it’s honestly insulting for the candidates in this race to say they want to be governor someday. I am not focused on that.”

The lieutenant governor election will be held in November.

Myers’ fellow OneRepublic co-founder, Ryan Tedder, came under his own political fire last month over his post defending President Donald Trump’s military parade that commemorated the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army.

“All politics & parties and righteous indignation aside it’s a super bummer that instead of celebrating the 250th anniversary of the USA ARMY and all those who have fought and died on our behalf… We’re protesting,” Tedder wrote on an Instagram story that was later deleted.

The post added, “I haven’t been a card carrying political member of either side in over 20 years & think at this point everything is absurd 99% of the time. But I’d like to say THANKYOU to all of the Army service members active and retired and those who have given their lives to protect our freedom…to protest.”

‘Recent discoveries’ prompt Texas lawmaker to end 38-year marriage to embattled AG

Texas state Sen. Angela Paxton announced Thursday that she’s filed for divorce from state Attorney General Ken Paxton, her longtime husband.

“Today, after 38 years of marriage, I filed for divorce on biblical grounds,” the state senator wrote in a social media post.

“I believe marriage is a sacred covenant and I have earnestly pursued reconciliation,” she added. “But in light of recent discoveries, I do not believe that it honors God or is loving to myself, my children, or Ken to remain in the marriage.”

Ken Paxton is currently running against longtime Republican Sen. John Cornyn in next year’s GOP primary, in what’s shaping up to be a bruising and nasty Senate nomination battle.

TRUMP ALLY PAXTON LAUNCHES SENATE PRIMARY CHALLENGE IN TEXAS

Paxton, who first won election as Texas attorney general in 2014 and has been re-elected twice, was impeached a couple of years ago by the Texas House of Representatives on allegations of corruption, which included claims related to an extramarital affair.

RED STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL LAUNCHES ELECTION INTEGRITY PROBE

The attorney general, who has long been a major supporter and ally of President Donald Trump, was later acquitted by the state Senate.

“After facing the pressures of countless political attacks and public scrutiny, Angela and I have decided to start a new chapter in our lives,” Ken Paxton said in a statement.

The attorney general added that “I could not be any more proud or grateful for the incredible family that God has blessed us with, and I remain committed to supporting our amazing children and grandchildren. I ask for your prayers and privacy at this time.”

While Trump has stayed neutral so far in the Senate primary in Texas, Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) are backing Cornyn.

“What Ken Paxton has put his family through is truly repulsive and disgusting. No one should have to endure what Senator Paxton has, and we pray for her as she chooses to stand up for herself and her family during this difficult time,” NRSC communications director Joanna Rodriguez said in a statement to Fox News.

Washington Post boss gives staff ultimatum as paper goes in new direction

Washington Post publisher and CEO Will Lewis is urging staffers who don’t “feel aligned” with the paper’s new direction to take a buyout and leave.

In a memo sent to staff Wednesday, Lewis touted the Post’s “reinvention journey” it has taken in recent months, including its “reimagining” of its opinion pages that “champion American values” among other company initiatives.

“The moment demands that we continue to rethink all aspects of our organization and business to maximize our impact,” Lewis wrote in the memo obtained by Fox News Digital. “If we want to reconnect with our audience and continue to defend democracy, more changes at The Post will be necessary. And to succeed, we need to be united as a team with a strong belief and passion in where we are heading.”

“I understand and respect, however, that our chosen path is not for everyone,” he continued. “That’s exactly why we introduced the voluntary separation program. As we continue in this new direction, I want to ask those who do not feel aligned with the company’s plan to reflect on that. The VSP is designed to support you in making this decision, give you the ability to weigh your options thoughtfully and with less concern about financial consequences. And if you think that it’s time to move on to a new chapter, the VSP helps you take that next step with more security.”

LONGTIME WASHINGTON POST COLUMNIST QUITS PAPER, SLAMS GROWING EDITORIAL CONSTRAINTS UNDER BEZOS

“Regardless of what you decide, I want to thank all of you for everything you have done for this organization. If you choose to move away from The Post, thank you for all your contributions, and I truly wish you the best of luck. If you believe in our next chapter, I’m excited for the work ahead of us,” Lewis concluded the memo.

A spokesperson for The Washington Post declined to comment.

Lewis’ memo came less than two months after the paper launched its latest buyout program specifically targeting veteran staffers that would conclude at the end of July.

WASHINGTON POST EDITOR ON LEAVE AFTER DOJ CHARGES HIM WITH POSSESSING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

According to a VSP document previously viewed by Fox News Digital, nine months of base pay would be given to staffers employed for 10-15 years, 12 months of base pay for 15-20-year veterans, 15 months of base pay for 20-25-year veterans and 18 months for anyone who has worked at the Post for more than 25 years. All of them would also receive 12 months of pay credit in their Separate Retirement Account (SRA).

The Post has suffered a dramatic decline in subscriptions, which was further fueled by multiple boycott campaigns against the “Democracy Dies in Darkness” paper over decisions made by its billionaire owner Jeff Bezos

The first was in October when Bezos halted the paper’s endorsement of then-Vice President Kamala Harris just days before the November election. Both instances sparked a mass exodus of paid subscribers and several resignations, including opinion editor David Shipley, who opposed Bezos’ new policy. Last month, the Post tapped Adam O’Neal, formerly of The Economist and The Wall Street Journal, to lead the opinion pages.

‘Hang up immediately’: Alarming phone scam costs Americans thousands in new scheme

A disturbing wave of fake agent phone scams is sweeping across the United States, catching people off guard and draining their savings. These criminals do not just pretend to be someone you trust; they impersonate federal agents, threaten arrest, and demand payment on the spot. As the schemes become more sophisticated, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies are issuing urgent warnings. Moreover, the scams are spreading rapidly and becoming increasingly difficult to spot.

How fake agent phone scams trick victims into sending money

Often, it begins with a phone call that appears legitimate. The number might display familiar initials, such as “FBI,” “US Marshals,” or even your local police department. Scammers use spoofing technology to fake caller IDs, making the call look official. During the call, the scammer creates panic with claims like:

  • Your Social Security number has been frozen.
  • A loved one is in jail and needs money for GPS monitoring.
  • You missed a jury duty summons and now face arrest.

To avoid immediate legal trouble, victims are often instructed to pay immediately, usually through prepaid gift cards, cryptocurrency ATMs, or wire transfers. These demands are designed to be untraceable and irreversible. Importantly, the US Marshals will NEVER call you to collect money, the agency emphasized in a public warning.

Fake agent phone scams are targeting victims across the United States

Reports of these calls have come in from New York, Illinois, Virginia, and nearly every other state. Some victims have lost thousands of dollars. In Michigan, scammers increased their credibility by using the real names and ranks of local officers. Meanwhile, in Maryland, suspects posing as FTC agents even showed up in person twice to collect cash. This scam is not limited to phone calls. Text messages, known as “smishing” attacks, are also on the rise. One version targeted iPhone users with fake DMV payment demands. According to cybersecurity firm Guardio, smishing surged 773% in just one month.

Why fake agent phone scams succeed and how they manipulate trust

Fraudsters know how to exploit fear effectively. They count on the fact that most people will do almost anything to avoid arrest or protect a family member. By spoofing official numbers, they undermine our first line of defense: trust. However, it is not just about technology. Experts also warn of an emotional manipulation crisis. These scammers don’t just steal your money, they steal your identity too. As a result, victims feel violated, scared, and uncertain about whom to trust.

Fake agent phone scams are evolving with AI and new tech tricks

Concerns are growing about how far these scams could go. Law enforcement and cybersecurity experts warn that scammers may soon use:

  • AI voice cloning to mimic real officials.
  • Malicious apps that mimic legitimate agencies.
  • Smartphone voice assistants, cameras, or microphones to harvest data.

While there’s no direct evidence of those advanced tactics yet, experts agree they’re coming, and fast.

How to protect yourself from fake agent phone scams and spoofed calls

These scams are designed to trigger panic and override your judgment. But a few simple actions can protect you and your loved ones from falling victim. Stay sharp, stay skeptical, and follow these smart steps:

Hang up immediately

If someone calls claiming to be from a government agency and demands money, don’t explain or ask questions; just hang up. Real law enforcement will never ask for payment over the phone, and they won’t threaten you into silence.

Never pay with gift cards, crypto, or wire transfers

No legitimate government agency will ever ask you to settle a legal issue with a prepaid gift card or a trip to a Bitcoin ATM. These are hallmark signs of a scam, designed to move your money fast and leave no trace.

Don’t trust caller ID

The number on your screen might look official, but spoofing technology can fake any number, even 911 or the FBI. If the caller creates pressure or fear, hang up and verify using an official number from the agency’s website.

Report the call

Even if you don’t fall for the scam, reporting it can help authorities track these operations. Contact your local FBI field office, your state’s Attorney General, or file a report at reportfraud.ftc.gov. Every report helps build a stronger case.

Talk to your loved ones

Scammers often target people who are more likely to believe a false threat, especially seniors or non-native English speakers. Have a conversation with family and friends so they know what to look out for and what to do if they receive a suspicious call or message.

Scrub your personal data from the internet

Many scammers do their homework before making contact. They might already know your name, address, or even a relative’s name to sound more convincing. Using a reputable personal data removal service can reduce the chances of your private information being misused. The less data available online, the fewer hooks criminals have to grab onto.

While no service can guarantee the complete removal of your data from the internet, a data removal service is really a smart choice.  They aren’t cheap – and neither is your privacy. These services do all the work for you by actively monitoring and systematically erasing your personal information from hundreds of websites. It’s what gives me peace of mind and has proven to be the most effective way to erase your personal data from the internet. By limiting the information available, you reduce the risk of scammers cross-referencing data from breaches with information they might find on the dark web, making it harder for them to target you.

Check out my top picks for data removal services and get a free scan to find out if your personal information is already out on the web by visiting

Don’t click suspicious links

Some scams are shifting from voice calls to text messages. If you receive a message claiming to be from the DMV, IRS, or law enforcement, don’t click any links. These texts (known as “smishing” attacks) can trick you into entering personal info or downloading malware.

The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe.

Kurt’s key takeaways

These criminals are getting smarter, but so can we. Staying informed and understanding what real law enforcement will never do is key to protecting yourself and your family. Authorities will not threaten you over the phone, demand gift cards or cryptocurrency, or ask you to prove your innocence with money. If something feels off, trust your gut. Also, spread the word, because the more people who know, the harder it is for these criminals to succeed.

Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley said in a recent interview he would support Auburn Tigers men’s basketball head coach Bruce Pearl if Pearl decided to run for U.S. Senate.

Though he doesn’t want Pearl to leave the Tigers team he’s coached the last 11 years.

“I respect and trust him. I just told him to do what he wants to do,” Barkley told AL.com. “Obviously, he’s made Auburn basketball relevant, which makes me happy. I said, ‘Hey, man, as much as I love you being the head basketball coach at Auburn, you taking Auburn to two Final Fours, something I never thought would happen, but I do understand.’

Retirees flock to new Hooters as founder vows to ‘change the culture’ of iconic chain

Hooters is making the residents of a Florida retirement community happy.

In The Villages, Florida, Hooters opened its doors on Monday, becoming the first new location since Hooters of America filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year as part of an effort to enable a founder-led buyout and restructuring of the popular restaurant chain.

Hooters fans lined up early for the opening of the new restaurant in The Villages, an age-restricted community located about 45 miles northwest of Orlando.

HOOTERS DITCHING BIKINI NIGHTS FOR OVER-60 CROWD AND FAMILIES

Neil Kiefer, CEO of Hooters Inc., the Clearwater, Florida-based company that founded the Hooters concept in 1983, told Fox News Digital previously that his group, along with another franchisee, intends to take over the Hooters brand.

“The residents of The Villages have asked for Hooters, and we are excited to open our doors,” Kiefer said in a news release. “We look forward to serving great food in a fun atmosphere and being a part of The Villages community.”

Social media video showed a steady flow of customers when the doors opened for the first time.

After more than 30 Hooters locations throughout the country abruptly closed in June, the grand opening of The Villages restaurant could signify a turning point for the original so-called “breastaurant” chain.

HOOTERS ABRUPTLY CLOSES RESTAURANTS IN MULTIPLE STATES AMID BANKRUPTCY RESTRUCTURING: ‘NEVER EASY’

Kiefer said his group intends to “change the culture” of Hooters after the corporate-run restaurants strayed from the original founders’ vision and made changes that were inconsistent with the brand.

Those changes included uniform modifications and standards that differed from location to location.

He said the iconic orange shorts, as conceived in the 1980s, were “more of an athletic look.”

FLORIDA HOME TO AMERICA’S TOP BEACH BARS AS DAYTONA BEACH SPOT LEADS THE LIST

“Somewhere along the line,” Kiefer said, Atlanta-based Hooters of America “went to the more revealing” shorts, “which to us does not jibe with a neighborhood restaurant that some families choose to frequent.”

A husband and wife who chronicle Florida life on social media attended the grand opening of The Villages location and documented their experience in a video they shared on their YouTube page.

It had over 9,000 views as of Thursday morning.

VARIETY OF FOOD FACTORS DRIVING DINERS TO CLOSE TODAY IN ‘SAD’ TREND: EXPERTS

Alex and Tember Fowler told Fox News Digital they moved to Florida in 2020.

They “decided to start showing everyone all there is to do” in the Sunshine State, which led them to create The Altem Life website and social media handles.

Alex Fowler revealed that the last Hooters they went to has since closed and was “not a very good one.”

But their experience at the location in The Villages was mostly positive.

They spoke highly of the wings and curly fries and said the service was “excellent.”

“They’re pretty much double-teaming every table, which is also helping everything out,” Alex Fowler said.

The one negative, he said, was that Hooters charged for refills on flavored teas, although they were told before they ordered them.

“They used to not do that,” he said.

Overall, though, their Hooters experience was positive, they said.

“I have to say, it earned my trust back in Hooters because I thought everything was very good,” Alex Fowler said.

“Probably one of the better openings we’ve been to,” Tember Fowler added.

One woman who dined there on the opening day agreed, telling the Fowlers, “I’d come back.”

Along with another existing franchisee, the Hooters buyer group collectively controls over 30% of the domestic locations, including 14 of the 30 highest-volume restaurants, according to a March 31 news release announcing the restructuring plan.

Once the restructuring has been approved by a bankruptcy court, the buyer group anticipates operating about 130 Hooters restaurants – roughly 65% of the domestic Hooters locations.

Another Hooters location is scheduled to open in Wesley Chapel, Florida, sometime this fall, the company said.
